Big Dreams, Big Plans Working together, the Newberry College family will transform the campus As I share a few comments with you about the difference you make in the life of Newberry College, I am reminded of a famous quote: “Leadership is not about winning the race, leadership is about how many others you bring along with you to the finish line.” Newberry College is what it is today because of the time, effort and financial support you have provided over the years. You have persevered during stormy weather and helped us stay the course. We are where we are today because – as a family of friends, alumni and supporters – you not only believed in the College, you took action. Thanks to your hard work, dedication and steadfast commitment, our future is as bright as it has ever been. The College is stronger financially than it has been in many years and our fall 2014 new student enrollment is the largest it has been in the 158-year history of the College. Additionally, our full accreditation status was reaffirmed in December by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC). These are exciting times and the campus climate is one of confidence and optimism. In mid-October, we publicly launched our $35 million capital campaign. When we achieve our target, we will transform the College with state-of-the-art academic facilities to support education, science, math, art, nursing and the fine and performing arts. The Center for Athletic and Academic Achievement project will expand and enhance the football stadium, while we accomplish substantial improvements in Eleazer, MacLean, O.L. Casey and Kaufmann Hall. We are the “game changer” for so many young men and women who are looking for a small college environment where they can develop the leadership skills necessary to make a difference in their field of choice. Your support is giving us the opportunity here at Newberry College to help today’s youth continue to DREAM BIG. There is no greater return on your investment. They will become the leaders of tomorrow and they will make this a better world for all of us. Take care, Dr. Maurice W. Scherrens President

“Your support is giving us the opportunity to help today’s youth continue to DREAM BIG. There is no greater return on your investment.”

HEAD CLASS OF

NEWBERRY TURNS IN A WINNING ENROLLMENT REPORT CARD

THE

Three check-in dates over the summer helped handle enrollment increases.

Newberry College turned in a record year for new student enrollment, welcoming 393 new undergraduate and transfer students – a 23 percent increase in new student enrollment compared to last fall. Overall, Newberry enrolled 1,097 students representing a 6 percent increase in total headcount from last fall’s class. Delsie Phillips, dean of Enrollment Management, gives partial credit for the growth to a focus on building relationships with students and their families early in the college search process. “We’ve increased the number of opportunities for students to visit campus and we’re offering more options for specialized visits for students with specific academic or program interests, such as music, science or the honors program.” The College also streamlined its financial aid process to give families a clearer picture of their actual costs and implemented the Tuition Promise to help families budget for expenses more accurately.

“Parents have reacted very positively to the Tuition Promise and the streamlined financial aid process. We’re able to help families make more informed decisions and feel more comfortable about committing to Newberry College.” – Danielle Bell, Director of Financial Aid

Howl Unleashed Donor gift brings new wolf sculpture to campus

WHAT’S INSIDE THE BIG GRAY BOX? That was the burning question on the minds of Newberrians this summer. They got their answer when President Scherrens unveiled a beautiful new sculpture – a larger than life recreation of the wolf depicted in the College’s logo. The monument was installed in June but remained hidden from view until the unveiling ceremony at Opening Convocation Aug. 22. 4 | N EWBERRY COL LEG E | ANNUAL REPO RT 201 3 - 1 4

The statue is a gift from Dr. Irwin Belk in honor of his wife, Carol. Although Belk’s philanthropic interests are varied, his focus has been primarily on higher education and athletics. He has been awarded more than 30 honorary doctorates from various institutions, including a Doctor of Humane Letters awarded to him by Newberry College in 2013.

“The wolf possesses many admirable qualities, such as wisdom, patience and loyalty. Newberry College exemplifies many of the best characteristics of the wolf.” -Foster Senn

3

Mayor, City of Newberry

The wolf monument was created by award-winning artist and sculptor Gregory Johnson, whose public art installations can be seen widely throughout the Southeast with other works on display in museums and corporate and private collections in the U.S. and internationally. “Creating the Newberry College wolf was a privilege for me,” Johnson said. “I enjoyed the adventure of making it, and I hope that the College and local community enjoy the result.”

4

1 The wolf stayed under wraps all summer until the big reveal. 2 Hap Pearce ’67 assisted with the honors of unveiling the new wolf to the more than 1,200 students, faculty and staff in attendance. 3 Newberry Mayor Foster Senn proclaimed August 22 The Day of the Wolf.

“Our new wolf statue is a beautiful likeness to the noble wolf depicted in our logo. It is exciting to have a tangible symbol of school pride for all to enjoy.”

4 With the 100-degree day, being doused for the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge was an almost welcome surprise for President Scherrens whose son, Dylan Mackeben, issued the challenge. Sandy Scherrens, Campus Pastor Ernie Worman and head football coach Todd Knight did the honors.

MAKINGTHEWOLF MODEL The wolf was created with an armature of flexible wood and metal to support the weight of nearly 500 pounds of clay used to model it. BRONZE The clay model was cast at a foundry in Wyoming using 250 pounds of bronze. FINISH The wolf’s beautiful patina was achieved through the time-honored process of annealing rather than through chemical dyes and pigments to achieve the luster and texture of the finished work.

THE SECOND ANNUAL DUFFORD DIVERSITY WEEK BROUGHT TOGETHER A SERIES OF DISCUSSIONS AND PRESENTATIONS THAT EXPLORED A VARIETY OF PERSPECTIVES ON RACE, ETHNICITY AND CULTURE THROUGH FIRST-HAND EXPERIENCES IN MANY DIFFERENT SETTINGS.

Dr. William Dufford ‘49 made his place in history by helping to integrate South Carolina schools but admits the struggle for diversity and equality continues today. To help support that struggle, he founded Dufford Diversity Week in partnership with Newberry College. The week kicked off with a debut screening of a documentary, The Bill Dufford Story is a Newberry College Story, featuring interviews with Dufford and others who worked with him on diversity issues. U.S. Congressman James E. Clyburn spoke about his book, “Blessed Experiences: Genuinely Southern, Proudly Black.” Exploring another aspect of diversity, panelists for “Bishops on the Border: Pastoral Responses to Immigration,” shared their first-hand experiences as church professionals working on the U.S./Mexico border. The Minority Breakfast convened local leaders working and serving the Latino community. Keynote speaker Justin Machado ’02 is an Emmy Award-winning senior producer at Bounce TV, a television network that targets African American adults with a programming mix of movies, sports, documentaries and faith-based programs. Machado shared his perspective on the evolution of how race has been portrayed in television over the past several decades. He surprised the audience with his announcement he would be donating his Emmy Award to the College. It will be housed in a special display case in McClurg Hall. Dufford Diversity Week is dedicated to building a community that understands and appreciates diversity, and to creating an environment of inclusivity.

Event founder Bill Dufford ‘49 with U.S. Congressman James Clyburn and Clyburn’s wife, Emily. Dufford and Clyburn experienced two sides of the same coin growing up during the Jim Crow era of racial segregation. Both shared their unique experiences during the Diversity Series.

Justin Machado ’02 donated his Emmy Award to Newberry College to inspire students to overlook their perceived limitations and to dream big in pursuit of their goals.

Students enjoyed posing with the Emmy Award donated by Machado.

It’s no accident that Newberry Colleges is ranked among the region’s top colleges. We’ve earned our place among the best by providing a top flight education for generations of students. Maintaining that leadership position definitely is not a “set it and forget it” proposition. It requires strategic focus and regular investment in facility improvements, faculty retention and student recruitment. That’s why Newberry College has launched a $35 million capital campaign to fund expansion and renovation of facilities, develop new academic programs, grow the scholarship endowment and increase annual giving to the College. On Oct. 17, 2014, Newberry launched the public phase of Scaling the Summit, the largest capital campaign in the school’s 158-year history.

“The comprehensive campaign helps increase the visibility of our strategic initiatives, which are essential to the College’s future development,” said Newberry College president Dr. Maurice Scherrens. President Scherrens will conduct a multi-city tour across South Carolina and surrounding states during the first half of 2015 to share the goals of the College and the campaign with alumni and friends. “The primary goal of Scaling the Summit is to focus on outcomes that will have the greatest impact on our students,” said Board of Trustees chair Hap Pearce ’67. “We can achieve this by supporting projects that emphasize academic quality and a dynamic campus life.” WATCH THE CAMPAIGN VIDEO! www.newberry.edu/ScalingTheSummit

FINANCIALHIGHLIGHTS FY2014 Newberry College has had a remarkable year and there is a growing level of excitement about what the future holds for the school. With enrollment on the rise and fundraising results at an all-time high, the 2014 fiscal year drew to a close with Newberry College in a much stronger financial position. The College has launched several new degree programs, minors and concentrations this year with several more on the horizon in the coming year. The Athletics program also continues to grow and attract student-athletes who are both top competitors and outstanding scholars. Fall’s incoming class was the largest in school history and also one of the most diverse.

• Achieved a 27 percent increase in fundraising results in FY2014 • Enrolled an increasingly diverse class with students of color making up 37 percent of the total student body

• Received full reaffirmation of accreditation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC)

• Ranked #33 for Best Colleges in the South by U.S. News & World Report (the school’s highest ranking to-date), #5 for Colleges in the South with the Least Student Debt and #11 for the South’s Best Colleges for Veterans

• Continued to make college more affordable for students with the innovative Newberry College Tuition Promise

• Continued to bring new oppportunities to students through academic partnerships

and grants, including a multi-college collaboration to bring computational modeling to Newberry and a National Science Foundation grant to digitize the 20,000-plus plant species catalogued in the College’s herbarium. It is an exciting time to be at Newberry College. The institution’s “vital signs” are good both in its financial stability as well as the level of enthusiasm, energy, positivity and momentum. Faculty, staff and students share the same belief that something special is happening at Newberry College.

Sharing the Love Chandler Hendrix ‘17

Major: Business Administration-Accounting Hometown: Lexington, South Carolina Sophomore Chandler Hendrix spends a lot of time sharing her love of Newberry College with other students. Last summer she worked as an Alpha Leader at the summer orientation sessions for incoming freshmen and transfer students. She works as a Student Ambassador in the Admission office, giving campus tours to prospective students and their families. “I love sharing with prospective students what I love so much about Newberry College and why it’s such a great place to be,” Chandler said. “And I really enjoyed spending time last summer with the new students and showing them what being a part of the Newberry Family is all about.” To help pay for her education, Chandler receives financial aid from a variety of sources, including academic scholarships, grants, loans and a work-study job in Institutional Advancement. “Working in Advancement, I have learned so much about why alumni are so important to our school. Once they graduate, many of them give back to show how much Newberry means to them. It’s so awesome to see how passionate people are about my college.”

Pursuing the Dream Caitlyn Smith ‘15

Major: Communications & Graphic Design Hometown: Golden, Colorado Senior Caitlyn Smith is squeezing as many opportunities as she can out of her education. Her work-study jobs have given her relevant experience in her areas of career interest. She parlayed her work-study experience into a summer job that helped get her one step closer to her post-graduation objective of being the marketing director for a professional baseball team. “I was able to obtain a full-time internship last summer with a baseball team in east Texas and expand on what I’ve already learned at Newberry,” Caitlyn said. “Thanks to Newberry graduates and my bosses on-campus, I have developed a lot of valuable contacts in the industry that I want to work in.” Caitlyn originally attended Newberry College on an athletic scholarship to play softball. But her college sports career was permanently sidelined when the team was involved in a car accident on the way to a game. The College has continued to work with Caitlyn to find other scholarship sources. “Without scholarships, grants and work-study, I would not have been able to remain at Newberry,” Caitlyn said. “Alumni scholarship donations make a huge difference for students who might not otherwise be able to attend here.”

Running for the Goal Malcolm Ford ‘17

Major: Sport Management Hometown: Lexington, South Carolina As a football player for the Newberry Wolves, sophomore Malcolm Ford doesn’t have a minute to spare. With daily practice, a busy travel schedule for games and a challenging course load, time management and personal responsibility are his daily mantra. To make it all work, Malcolm relies on the relationships he’s built with his professors. “They make themselves available to me at a moment’s notice, not just in the classroom, but outside of class as well,” Malcolm said. “They’re eager to support me when it comes to my education, but also advise me in things about everyday life.” As an independent young man, it was hard for Malcolm to ask for help when he needed tutoring in one of his courses. “I was nervous about asking someone for help, but once I started working with them and saw their passion for my success, I relaxed and it became much easier to learn.” Scholarships help make a Newberry College education possible for Malcolm to pursue his dream of becoming a physical therapist. He appreciates the investment that donors are making in his future. “Being that Newberry College is a small school, it really shows that we are a family when you see alumni and friends of the College giving back to this wonderful campus.”

ESTATE AND OTHER PLANNED GIFTS

By including Newberry College in your will or making other planned gifts, you can provide for yourself and your loved ones, plan wisely for your future and make a meaningful gift to Newberry College. Planned gifts enable you to preserve your assets during your lifetime and leave a valuable legacy at Newberry in the future. Donors who make estate and other planned gifts are recognized as members of The Heritage Club, the College’s planned giving society. Contact Scott Joyner scott.joyner@newberry.edu 803-321-5617

GIFTS OF REAL ESTATE

Gifts of real estate are an excellent way to make a difference in the lives of Newberry College students and lower your tax liability at the same time. Gifts of property or a percentage of property may help you avoid paying capital gains tax, lower your current income tax and reduce your future federal estate taxes. Real estate gifts may increase your income if they are structured through a life income gift. You may also deed property, including vacation homes, to Newberry College while retaining the lifetime right to occupy the property. Gifts of real estate must meet certain criteria and be approved by the Newberry College Board of Trustees. Contact Scott Joyner scott.joyner@newberry.edu 803-321-5617

GIFTS OF STOCKS, BONDS OR OTHER SECURITIES

Gifts of appreciated stocks, bonds or other securities allow you to make a substantial gift to Newberry College at a minimal cost. You will receive a tax deduction based on the value of the security at the date of the gift. With long-term appreciated securities (those held longer than 12 months), you will receive a charitable income tax deduction for the full fair market value of the gift and will avoid paying capital gains tax on the appreciation. Upon receipt of the gift, the College will sell it for the benefits. Contact Jason Boice jason.boice@newberry.edu 803-321-5694

INSURANCE

An old or new insurance policy may be an appropriate way to make a gift to Newberry College for future endowment priorities. Gifts of insurance will not be accepted for capital or current programming needs. Only permanent life insurance policies, i.e., whole life or universal life, are accepted as gifts. You may fund a new policy naming Newberry College as beneficiary or you may name Newberry College as beneficiary of an existing policy. For each policy, provisions must be made to cover future premium payments. If you transfer ownership of the policy to Newberry College, all future premium payments are tax deductible. Newberry College will only undertake the responsibility of making premium payments if the donor makes gifts to College that are equal to the premium payments. If such gifts cease, the College will convert the policy to its cash value. Contact Jason Boice jason.boice@newberry.edu 803-321-5694
