NOW IS THE TIME!

When working to positively impact mental health policy, the Mental Health Association of Central Carolinas (MHA) is always looking for “windows of opportunity.” Mental illness has generated

a lot of media attention lately. This attention has helped to create a window of opportunity unlike any the MHA has seen in decades.

Now is the time to positively impact change! You can help us do so by making sure people everywhere understand the importance of mental health and how each of us can support those living with mental illness during their journeys toward recovery. According to the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Authority (SAMHSA), 76 percent of those who get help for mental illness report no serious psychological distress 6 months later. With the right help and support, recovery is possible!

The stakes are high! We know that one in four Americans are likely to experience a diagnosable mental illness within a given year. Sadly, two-thirds of those will never seek treatment. The number one reason these individuals do not seek help is stigma. No one is immune to mental illness – it may touch our family members, co-workers, those in our faith community, those at our children’s sporting events, our neighbors, etc.

ALLOW MHA TO BE YOUR CATALYST FOR TAKING ACTION TO IMPACT POSITIVE CHANGE!

Following are just a few ways you can make a difference:

Join our anti-stigma campaign “Mental Health Matters: It’s time to talk.” Simply visit our website at www.mhacentralcarolinas.org, and “Take Your Pledge!” by adding your name to our pledge wall along with a statement about what you will do to help end stigma. It can be as simple as Breaking Stigma One Conversation at a Time.

Build understanding by educating yourself! Contact the MHA or visit the website to register for a Mental Health First Aid class (Youth or Adult version). Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour evidence-based training that helps the public identify, understand and respond to signs of mental illness and substance use disorders.

You may also call the MHA directly to schedule a class.

Learn lifesaving skills through QPR (Question, Persuade, and Refer) suicide prevention training. QPR teaches three steps anyone can learn to help prevent suicide.

QPR is the most widely used gatekeeper training in the United States and its success is evidence-based. Again, visit the website or contact the MHA to register for schedule a class in your community.

Support the efforts of the MHA with your time, talent, and treasure! The highest and best use of your resources can positively impact mental health services delivery systems, and empower and support individuals and families as they navigate the road to recovery!

Since 1933, the Mental Health Association of Central Carolinas (MHA) has been the voice of hope within Mecklenburg and Cabarrus counties for persons affected by mental illness. MHA advocacy helps to achieve long term social and/or policy change by framing the issues, developing strategic alliances, and sharing the latest information about mental health with the community.

Helping others is as simple as sharing our services with others. As you learn more about MHA and our purpose and services, please share with others so that we may be able to help more people.

OVERVIEW OF PROGRAMS LEGISLATIVE ADVOCACY Direct Systems Advocacy – MHA works to educate legislators and other policy makers about the needs of those who depend upon the public mental health system and public policies that will address those needs. Throughout the year, particularly during the legislative session, MHA staff work to promote the MHA’s annual legislative agenda.

Public Education – Recognizing the importance of education and civic engagement, MHA actively seeks opportunities to highlight important policy issues via email, Facebook, and Twitter. To keep up with the latest policy news follow us on social media.

Grassroots Organization – MHA helps to mobilize community members by providing opportunities for civic engagement and self-advocacy.

Self-Advocacy – MHA trains consumers of mental health services, caregivers, and Peer Support Specialists how to use personal stories of recovery in legislative advocacy.

INFORMATION AND REFERRAL SERVICES The MHA provides information and referral to individuals seeking mental health services or to those who have questions about treatment services or other mental health issues. Folks may call the MHA directly or visit our website and look under “Get Help” and “Find a Practitioner.”

COMMUNITY EDUCATION AND OUTREACH MHA addresses current community needs or interests with an array of educational offerings that include but may not be limited to: • Mental Health First Aid - Adult & Youth versions* • Question, Persuade & Refer (QPR) suicide prevention training* • Advocacy 201 (legislative & self-advocacy skills for consumers/ caregivers/Peer Support Specialists) • Managing Money in Recovery • De-escalation • Multicultural Mental Health *Denotes evidence-based best practice trainings

A Compeer SUCCESS STORY Dave and Dwight met through MHA’s Compeer program six months ago. They said it was easy to become friends, because they had a lot in common.

Volunteers are trained, screened and involved in the matching process to ensure compatibility.

Both men like good food and enjoy meeting for lunch, but they’re also very active and often take walks or go hiking. Each loves sports and while they have taken in a few Charlotte Knights games, in major league baseball the lines are drawn– Dwight is a Braves fan and Dave roots for the Pirates–but they agree to disagree. The mutual respect is evident. Dwight says, “Dave is a man of integrity.” Dave adds, “Dwight is a really good guy, we’re very comfortable around each other.”

A Mulicultural Advocacy SUCCESS STORY

COMPEER The MHA’s evidence-based best practice Compeer program matches community volunteers with adults in mental health recovery programs.

The volunteers provide one-to-one supportive friendship and mentoring relationships to offset the loneliness and social isolation that can accompany mental illness.

MULTICULTURAL ADVOCACY Our Multicultural Advocacy program was created to meet the unmet mental health needs of the increasing immigrant and refugee populations.

Mecklenburg County resettled nearly 33% of North Carolina’s refugees and resources are needed to better address their unique mental health needs.

Language and cultural barriers and in some cases, the trauma of surviving torture, fleeing their homelands, and resettling in an environment that’s foreign to them can leave a refugee with nowhere to turn.

Did you know that refugees and immigrants experience mental health issues at a higher rate than the general population? A recent event hosted

by MHA, “One Cup at a Time,” featured Ruth King, an insight meditation teacher, emotional wisdom author and consultant. Thirty eight participants which included community support staff and refugees met in small groups to talk openly about the cultural realities of mental health. Over coffee this important issue was discussed as well as issues preventing the diverse refugee population from seeking mental health services addressed. The event was an important step toward improving access to services to better meet the needs of all.

PARENTVOICE MHA’s ParentVOICE program provides empowerment and support to families of youth experiencing emotional, behavioral, and mental health challenges. Trained and caring Family Support Specialists educate families on how to navigate the education, mental health, and judicial systems in order to achieve positive outcomes. MHA offers all trainings at no or low cost.

THE PARENTVOICE PROGRAM OUR IMPACT 2013 Jan. ParentVOICE graduated a class of eight (8) Family Partners who received a State Certificate identifying that they are trained to deliver support, education, and guidance to parents and families raising youth with behavioral, emotional and mental health challenges.

Jan. - May ParentVOICE staff implemented a partnership grant with Charlotte Mecklenburg School Psychologists; two (2) Family Partners were assigned to eight (8) Project LIFT Zone schools to bring parents needed support and empowerment services, plus increased access to community resources.

Feb. - May Organized and implemented four (4) Family Education Nights for families in Project LIFT Zone schools featuring guest speakers, education sessions, lending library, live entertainment, dinner and child care.

Mar. - May Participated as Family Support Staff during Truancy Court at two (2) ProjectLIFT Schools; attended weekly meetings and met one-on-one with families to offer advocacy and support during sometimes difficult sessions with the Judges.

ADVOCACY PREVENTION EDUCATION

ADVOCACY 201 TRAININGS

As North Carolina’s oldest and largest mental health advocacy organization, we design and deliver trainings through half-day or full-day workshops that encourage citizen engagement in the legislative process. These courses provide continuing education for Peer Support Specialists, and are intended to empower individuals diagnosed with a mental health disorder to initiate regular contact with key elected officials. Caregivers, family members and others (even professionals) who are interested in systems advocacy are also invited to participate in these trainings.

QPR teaches people of all ages and backgrounds to recognize the warning signs, clues, and suicidal communications of people in trouble (at risk); to act vigorously to intervene; and ultimately to prevent a possible tragedy.
