Greetings! I am Queen Charlotte, and the city of Charlotte, North Carolina is named in my honor.

Welcome to Charlotte Douglas International Airport!

The Airport is an exciting place full of people and cargo coming from and going to destinations all over the world. Charlotte Douglas (CLT) is located in Charlotte, N.C. and is one of the nation’s 10 busiest airports with more than 44 million passengers traveling through yearly.

Passengers arrive at the Airport to board airplanes to take them on trips for work or vacations. An average of 700 flights take off from CLT each day. Nearby, cargo planes ship everything from the mail to packages - large and small.

When you get to the Airport, you drop off your luggage to be inspected and taken to your airplane. You go through a security line to make sure every passenger is as safe as can be.

Then, you head to your gate where you wait for the gate agent to say, “It is time to board your plane.”

Once on board the plane, you put away your carry-on bags, listen to safety instructions and get ready to depart. The pilot then taxis the plane to the runway where you take off into the beautiful Carolina blue sky!

CLT is growing!

More passengers and airplanes use CLT every day. Destination CLT is the name given to a group of construction and improvement projects at the Airport. These projects will take place over the next 10 years and will help us to continue to provide the best service and experience to passengers.

Some of the new projects include: • more lanes for picking up and dropping off passengers outside the terminal • more gates so more planes can use the terminal at the same time • a fourth parallel runway for planes to land and take off each day The pictures in this book give you a peek at some of the Destination CLT projects.

A new elevated roadway is being built outside the Airport. Millions of visitors will be able to see me every year.

We’ll be rolling out the royal red carpet for you when construction is complete.

The Airport is getting the royal treatment to make it fit for a queen and for you!

There is a baby grand piano in the Atrium.

You’ll be able to have tea with me in my new food court. For now, you can rest in one of my rocking chairs throughout the Airport.

Enjoy everything from sweets and pretzels to pizza and BBQ.

We are expanding our terminal to include new shops and restaurants.

FACT We were the first Airport to introduce rocking chairs, adding a touch of Southern charm.

We are adding approximately 45 new gates for a total of more than 120 gates.

New gates will welcome more guests to the Queen City and allow guests to board planes to visit far away lands.

FACT Gate agents help you board the correct airplane.

When the finishing touches are complete, I will take my place in the heart of the Airport. I will greet visitors daily from my new lobby home.

Artist Raymond Kaskey of Washington, DC designed the 15-ft bronze statue of Queen Charlotte, dedicated in 1990.
