Dear Readers, Queensland is a multicultural success story and the month of August presented an opportunity to showcase and celebrate our unique diversity and its benefits. People from across the state joined together to learn and acknowledge that, while we may come from different cultures, we all love living in Queensland.

Over in India there have been important achievements, such as Abrogation of Article 370 that ushered in two new Union Territories -- Jammu and Kashmir, and Leh and Ladakh, the 'fit-India' launch by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, successful launch of Chandrayan as well. For us in Queensland, this has been a long month.

Plenty of celebrations, awards and events took place last month, and we covered most of them. Most notable of them has been the Multicultural Queensland Awards, and we have the low-down on the winners inside. The Indian High Commissioner Dr AM Gondane and Mrs Gondane received a farewell at Brisbane, organised by FICQ in collaboration with GOPIO and AIBC. But not all was well in August though. India’s 73rd Independence Day celebrated in India and Australia

H

oisting of Indian tricolour and other ceremonies mark the occasion in India and Australia As India and Indians across the globe celebrated the nation’s 73rd Independence Day on 15th August this year, there was an eagerness to listen to the Indian Prime Minister’s speech from the ramparts of the Red Fort, especially post the abrogation of Article 370 by Indian Parliament removing special status for Jammu & Kashmir. One of the important elements of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s speech was the reference to his government’s decision to remove special status for Jammu & Kashmir, which according to him will ensure justice and development to backward sections of the society in the region.

Among other things which the Prime Minister spoke about on his Independence Day address to the nation was a summing up of what his newly re-elected government has accomplished in the last 75 days.

He also raised concerns over the problems of population explosion and insufficient water conservation efforts in India.

Modi’s two key announcements However, two major announcements were the highlights of Modi’s speech.

The first pertained to the announcement that a Chief of Defence Staff would be appointed, a demand that was pending since a review was done on the conduct of the Kargil War. This would ensure defense preparedness and co-ordination between the three Services.

The second announcement was regarding the creation of ‘Jal Jeevan

Mission’ for water conservation and revival of water bodies, with an allocation of Rs 3.5 lakh crores. “Just as I called upon the country to join the Swachchta Mission to make India open defecation free, I ask that you join the ‘Jal Jeevan Mission’ which cannot succeed unless people participate on a mass level,” the Prime Minister said.

Celebrations in Australia The Indian community here in Australia congregated at various places to celebrate India’s 73rd Independence Day. The Indian diaspora celebrated this occasion with great enthusiasm, just as they would in India. The Independence Day celebrations started early, particularly in Sydney, as various associations tend to give an expression to their sense of patriotism in their own way. At Indian consulates across Australia, the morning celebrations included the unfurling of the Indian tricolour and a reading of the message of the President of India.

In Brisbane, Honorary Consul Archana Singh hoisted the Indian tricolour, as a large crowd gathered to celebrate the occasion.

In Canberra, Indian High Commissioner Dr. A.M Gondane steered the Independence Day celebrations and hoisted the India flag.

In Sydney, a large number of people gathered to hear Consul General Manish Gupta do the honours.

After the ceremony, the Indian community interacted with the representatives of the government of India. Miniature Indian flags were distributed and traditional Indian cuisine was served.

End of a passionate politician and humane minister

B

JP stalwart and Former External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj, 67, who passed away recently has marked the end of an era in BJP politics. As External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj worked relentlessly to serve the interests of the Indians living abroad. However, she decided not to contest the 2019 Lok Sabha (Lower House of Indian Parliament) elections on health grounds.

A troubleshooter During her tenure as the External Affairs Minister, Swaraj had managed to establish an important link between the government and the people of India. She brought a human face to the Ministry for the first time.

She acted as the troubleshooter for any Indian stuck anywhere abroad.

Besides, she was instrumental in resolving minor issues like issuance of visa to the needy and getting relief to Indians living abroad who were in

any kind of distress. Her death has marked the end of one of the moderate voices in Indian politics.

Her inimitable style Her style of politics was inimitable.

Whenever she would be confronted with critics and opposition leaders, she would give them a befitting reply but in a manner that would not offend anyone. Her oratorical style was exemplary and was much appreciated for the way she put forth issues in front of other leaders in a passionate manner, be it an Indian forum or an international one.

Even in Parliament she was known to have measured up to the witty remarks of other legislators, especially Rashtriya Janata Dal’s Lalu Yadav. She brought calmness to the proceedings even in the midst of a tensed atmosphere. She had good relations with leaders across the political spectrum. She was even known to have rapport with some international leaders.

The end of a versatile leader in Indian politics Jaitley’s services would be sorely missed by the BJP and the nation

H

e was the man who played a quintessential role in the success of the previous Modi government. A man who donned many hats in public as lawyer, politician, and raconteur and cricket administrator, former Finance Minister Arun Jailtley passed away at the age of 66 years, on August 24 after a period of illness.

His relentless support and counsel Though Jaitley had not been part of the current Modi government, apparently for health reasons, his presence in the BJP itself would have helped Modi and Amit Shah at a time when many controversial decisions such as the abrogation of Article 370 abolishing the special status to Jammu & Kashmir have been taken. His demise is a big loss to Modi and Shah as Jatley was the man who had counseled Amit Shah when he was facing a political crisis in Gujarat a few years back during the reins of the UPA government. Jatley was also responsible for bringing Modi to national politics, against the wishes of many in the BJP. Moreover, Jaitley had good relations with many opposition leaders, which made him an ideal troubleshooter for the party.

The Emergency days and Jaitley’s rise Jaitley became a prominent figure in Indian politics during the struggle against the Emergency in 1975, when he was elected president of the Delhi University Student’s Union in 1974. He was among the first ones

to be arrested and stayed in jail for 19 months for opposing Emergency in the country.

In the Vajpayee government, Jaitley held many important portfolios from 1999, including the key ministries of law and justice, shipping, information and broadcasting and commerce and industry. However, his popularity soared from 2002 when he became BJP spokesperson.

His ability to articulate the party line was an indispensable asset for the BJP and the National Democratic Alliance, of which BJP is a part.

No doubt Jaitley’s services would be missed both by his party, the BJP, and the nation as a whole.

Pranab Mukherjee conferred country’s highest civilian award

F

ormer President of India Pranab Mukherjee was conferred Bharat Ratna, India’s highest civilian award, along with late Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader Nanaji Deshmukh and late singer Bhupen Hazarika. President Ramnath Kovind gave the award to Mukherjee, and others were awarded posthumously, at a function held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi.

Mukherjee joins the elite group of Sarvepalli Radhakrsihnan, Rajendra Prasad, Zakir Hussain and VV Giri, all former Presidents of India, who were awarded the Bharat Ratna.

Mukherjee, who was fondly called ‘Pranab Da’, was the Congress’ chief troubleshooter before becoming the President of India in 2012. He was the President between 2012 and 2017.

Among his many achievements, he became the youngest Finance Minister of India at the age of 47 years, in 1982. From 2004, he headed three crucial ministries such as external affairs, defence and finance.

He was a politician and statesman of impeccable credentials, and a man of integrity.

&K and Ladakh are now Union Territories; massive deployment of paramilitary forces in the region to thwart attempts to restore normalcy The government of India on August 5 abolished Article 370 that gives special status to Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) and moved a bill to bifurcate the state into two separate Union Territories of J&K and Ladakh.

The Home Minister informed the Indian Parliament that President Ram Nath Kovind has given his consent to the official notification abrogating Article 370.

any parts of India came in the grip of floods as heavy rains lashed the country, leaving over a hundred dead in Kerala alone Last month saw the alert sounded in India especially the southern parts warning people against heavy floods due to the continuous deluge. Last year Kerala made headlines with the heavy rains and the resulting destruction and casualties faced by it. This year the count of states facing flood situation has increased. As a result of these rains several people lost their lives and about a million people displaced.

Kerala and Karnataka continued to face a grim situation last month due to floods and landslides wrought by torrential rains, leaving behind as many as 121 people dead in Kerala alone and disrupting normal life. In Gujarat 19 people had died in rainrelated incidents.

Maharashtra also witnessed massive floods, with 12 becoming its victim. While rescue operations were on in flood-hit parts across India, Kerala is staring at a huge crisis with nearly 1.25 lakh people having been displaced, including nearly 25,000 each in worst-hit Wayanad and Kozhikode.

In all this, the role of Army, Navy, Airforce and the local police personnel in rescue operations cannot be ignored. From airlifts, rescuing in boats to physically swimming in to rescue the victims, they have been at the forefront.

Finally, it was decided that Sonia Gandhi should again take up the leadership of the party as its interim president till this issue is fully resolved.

As it stands, the leadership crisis is sure to linger on at least for some time now.

Firdaus’ paradise turns a new leaf 370 (a temporary provision) that accorded a special status, a separate Constitution, a separate flag and a separate set of laws to J&K.

I

ndia and Jammu and Kashmir (J&K) are at the cusp of a new dawn, laden with the promise of a new beginning. Firdaus’ paradise Kashmir has been gifted with a new lease of hope, peace and development, after four IndoPak wars and over 42,000 deaths in terrorist violence since 1990.

Bollywood productions over a time have portrayed Kashmir’s gradual drift into an abyss. Ranging from the peaceful 1960’s and 70’s featuring ‘Kashmir Ki Kali’ depicting the serenity of the Dal Lake and ‘Aap Ki Kasam’ capturing the enchanting beauty of Gulmarg, through the terrorism-hit phase of the 1990’s producing ‘Roja’ (1992) symbolising militancy and kidnappings, and the post Kargil war productions such as ‘LOC Kargil’ (2003) recounting the valour of the Indian army

to reclaim occupied territories, to the most recent blockbuster ‘Uri’ (2019) enthralling the audiences with India’s daring surgical strikes across the Line of Control.

In this atmosphere of despair, hopelessness and unending strife, Narendra Damodardas Modi led incumbent National Democratic Alliance retained power in May 2019 with an unprecedented 351 seats in the national Parliament.

What followed soon after was a steady troops build-up in the Kashmir valley, feeding speculations about some ‘big’ announcement to be made, possibly the scrapping of Article 35A of the Indian Constitution which gave Kashmiri residents special privileges to maintain the state’s demographic composition.

But few expected the Narendra Modi government to dump Article

In a display of exemplary political will, following the Presidential (Application to Jammu and Kashmir) Order 2019, Home Minister Amit Shah tabled the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Bill, 2019, to bifurcate J&K into Ladakh as a Union Territory without a legislature, and J&K as another Union Territory with a legislature. After two days of intense debate, the bill was passed with a 2/3rd majority in both the Houses and with the support of some senior opposition leaders. Seventy years of Kashmir’s suffering seems to have united India, both inside and outside the Parliament.

First, Article 370 had become a convenient tool for the spread of terrorism in Kashmir and to enflame anti-India sentiments among the youth and separatists in the Valley.

Second, as the harbinger of ethnic cleansing of Kashmiri pundits, killing over 1300 and forcing around half a million to flee the valley, Article 370 had long ceased to be a symbol of India’s secular ethos and Kashmir’s Kashmiriyat. Third, Article 370 prevented India’s anti-corruption bodies from investigating corruption cases against state leaders, many of whom had siphoned off billions of dollars of tax-payers money, allocated annually for state development.

Fourth, it was anti-development as it dissuaded investors and corporates from investing and acquiring land or property for setting up businesses and industries. Fifth, it kept children aged 6 to 14 from benefiting from the right to education scheme, available to other children across India. Sixth, it kept the state’s safai karmacharis and dalits from benefitting from reservation, available outside the state, the reason for BSP leader Mayawati’s support to the decision. And seventh, Article 370 was anti-women, as it debarred them, unlike men, of all inheritance rights upon their marriage to nonJ&K residents.

To many Kashmir and India watchers, the clock for Article 370 has been ticking for some time now.

First, it has been part of the BJP/ Jan Sangh manifestos since the 1950s, but what lacked was a political will and necessary numbers in the parliament. Second, PM Modi’s decisive leadership — as seen on demonetisation, GST and triple talaq—gave that critical push to the government.

Third, the redundancy of UN resolutions perpetuated by cross-border terrorism and Pakistan’s ceasefire violations and ill-advised move to alter the demography of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir, strengthened India’s case. Fourth, repeated snub by separatists to democratic elections, development and peace offers from New Delhi, and insisting on Pakistan’s inclusion in talks had ruled out any realistic chances of

So, should India and J&K have waited for another 70 years and witnessed another 42,000 killed in the quest for an elusive peace? Barring China, the international community, including the key Islamic states and 1.3 billion Indians have thrown their weight behind this historic decision. Hopefully, ‘Kashmir ki Kali’ will blossom again in the Bollywood soon.

Brisbane's Kashmiri diaspora rejoices removal of Article 370

he Kashmiri Pandit diaspora that lives in Brisbane were ecstatic over the recent Abrogation of Article 370 and 35A that gave a Union Territory status to Leh, Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir.

It is well documented that the Hindu population was forced to flee the Kashmir valley as a result of Islamist insurgency during late 1989 and the early 1990s. World over the Kashmiri Pundits have rejoiced the work done by the PM Narendra Modi. The Brisbane Community had a great 'Thank You' celebration at short notice and many community representatives attended the function at Sherwood Arboretum on August 10, 2019.

The Kashmiri community of Brisbane received greetings on the occasion from representatives of Simply Human, Sanskrit group, Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, Brisbane Indian Times, Federation of Indian Communities, Queensland, Brisbane Telangana Association, the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, QLD Chapter, Jammu Kashmir Study Centre, Integral Yoga, and several other prominent individuals of the Indian communities in Brisbane, including a message from the Honorary Indian Consulate, Mrs. Archana Singh.

hile Vanitha Aridass’ story of uprooting her life to be with the man she loves is not especially unique, the story of the strong community ties she has made since moving to Brookwater definitely is.

Ms Aridass moved to Australia from Malaysia 10 years ago to marry her husband, Sundhar Narayan and in doing so, left behind everything that was familiar to her.

“We are inside Augusta Point and when we first moved in, straight away our neighbours embraced us, they’re just beautiful people,” Ms Aridass said.

“When you don’t have any family close by it means a lot to have local support and because this was the first house we built, we needed a lot of advice and our neighbours were always ready to help.

The couple and their two children moved into their new home in November 2018, well before the deadline of February this year.

Their daughter was only little when the build started and Ms Aridass said while things were stressful with a young child, the build and move to the area were seamless.

“Our builder Steve from Steve Parcell Builders was fantastic and ended up delivering our home two months ahead of schedule which was great and made life so much easier,” she said.

“Before we moved here we lived in Springfield Lakes and while we loved our house there, we’d always known about Brookwater and envied the lifestyle here.

“It’s very green here which my husband and I love, and it reminds me a lot of Malaysia which is also a very green, tropical country and makes me feel more reconnected to my home.

“Our house also overlooks the golf course and we regularly see kangaroo families roaming around the back and birds singing.

The dance of divinity

T

he Annual Concert of LalithaKalalaya School of Bharatanatyam was held on 10th of August at Clairvaux Mackillop College, Upper Mount Gravatt. The event was organized to provide an opportunity to showcase the talents of students to a much bigger audience. Six months of hard work and intense practice session was well received with overwhelming response from the audience and prominent guests. The concert began with the performance of Pushpanjali by junior students. As the programme continued, senior students took over the stage and presented a group performance in the first half. The second half commenced with much awaited dance drama Trishakti, a thematic production portraying the powers of three goddess, Saraswathi, Lakshmi and Parvathi.

The story was well presented by a group of 60 senior students with

a wonderful choreography of Smt. Padmalakshmi Sriram. Colourful costumes and elegance performance enthralled the audience throughout the concert.

Trophies were distributed to all the students. Special awards were given to 100% attendance and dedicated Students.

GOPIO's India Day Fair celebrates India's Independence Day

ndian Day Fair, the signature event of GOPIO Queensland, was held on 17th August at Roma Street Parkland.

The Queensland's Iconic event completed eight year with this year's event, all this while constantly growing over the years.

The event celebrates India’s Independence Day by showcasing everything Indian to the wider community. As Indian Independence Day was on the 15th of August, India Day Fair was held on the closest Saturday; this year it fell on August 17.

The calamity throughout the nation has claimed precious human lives.

We salute the efforts of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), a specialised force that enters into swift and coordinated action with the assistance of civil society and the public.

The mammoth tragedy revives the discussion around the need to protect the fragile ecosystem in the country. Massive investments are being called for for tree-planting by many agencies in India, credible corporates such as Tatas, and other NGOs such as the Isha Foundation launched renewed measures to increase the green cover.

I

magine being a refugee in your own country, not being able to leave a place or even cross certain streets after a certain time.

On Friday, 9 August, I was honoured to be invited for a Yarning Circle at the home of Aunty Denise Proud. This Yarning Circle gave me a firsthand insight into the history surrounding the Boundary Streets of cities and towns in Queensland, imposed during early settlement by non-indigenous people. Many aboriginal elders shared their memories of the trauma that resulted from such policies. ‘When the outsiders came, they had the Bible and we had the land. Soon, they had the land, and we had the Bible!’ quipped one elder as he described his own experiences. There was also

a great deal of pride in being able to survive and be where they are today, though the fight goes on.

On August 10, there was a Boundary-to-Boundary Street Walk, starting in Spring Hill and culminating in Bunyapa Park, West End. There were songs describing the history, artwork by aboriginal artists, food and even a book teaching protective behaviour.

For me both these days provided a great opportunity to reconnect with aboriginal people I had met and worked with some years ago and to meet new indigenous and nonindigenous people all committed to the same cause. We could share some commonalities in our histories, world views and culture and also celebrate our unity in diversity.

Ganesh Utsav on Sept 15 Brisbane Maharashtra Mandal (BRIMM) is organising the Ganesh Festival on 15th of September this year. Every year more than 500 BRIMM members attend the function. At Ganesh Utsav efforts are made to cater to elders as well as the younger generation. The traditional pooja and aarti (hyms) as well as the miravnook (parade) with dhol tasha, a traditional cultural ritual, are organised during the Ganesh Festival.

An entertainment program run and performed by local artists and members of BRIMM is also organised on this occasion. This program gives the members a chance to showcase their talents and fulfil their desire to perform for the Marathi audience as well as their Australian friends.

This year also the organisers have reportedly received an overwhelming response for performances at the event.

Entertainment galore this Diwali Besides Ganesh Festival, BRIMM will also organise Diwali on 9th November. This year BRIMM has arranged for two renowned artists to perform live for the members of Maharashtra Mandal. Ashwini Shende, a renowned writer and poet, who has written songs for many Marathi serials and films, will interact with the members of BRIMM. She along with Abhijeet Khandekar, another renowned actor of the Marathi Theatre, will entertain the audience by taking them on a journey with Ashwini Shende’s songs and Abhijit Khandekar’s acting. Singers will also accompany them in singing the various songs they will discuss.

BRIMM’s Movie Nights and charity work BRIMM also organises Movie Nights, which are not only entertaining but thought provoking also.

It helps the community to enjoy a full three hours of Marathi language which they often miss, living in a

primarily English-speaking country. BRIMM also runs a Marathi language learning session, every 3rd Sunday for their second-generation children as well as those who are interested in learning the language.

In the past, Brisbane Maharashtra Mandal has donated about 280 books to the Brisbane City Council Library, in the hope that the community gets a chance to read Marathi literature as well as help their children read Marathi literature. Anyone who has a library card can access these books for research or purely reading purposes. The project was a volunteer-based donation of books. Members of BRIMM volunteered and got together to write the abstracts for each book so that it could be included in the library catalogue.

BRIMM has also initiated fundraisers for charity purposes. Recently, they started an online fundraiser for the recovery of the damages done in Western Maharashtra because of the heavy rains.

Seniors Week celebrated during Multicultural Month of August

s part of the Queensland Multicultural Month of August, Fiji Senior Citizens Association Queensland hosted the Seniors Week Celebrations on 25 August at the Multicultural Hub, 24 Arnwood place, Annerley.

The celebrations were sponsored by Queensland Government and supported by Cr Fiona Cunningham and diverse community organisations. MC of the event were Reena Augustine and Prakruthi Mysore.

The event started at 10:30am with a musical act by Michael Po Saw, followed by Flag Raising Ceremony at 11am. Then after the Acknowledgment of Traditional Owners by Aunty Peggy Tidyman followed the acknowledgement of distinguished

guests and prayers for world peace, which included Hindu, Christian, Islamic and Sikh prayers.

One Indian who's fulfilling his daitva to society Ashish Sood of Brisbane is one Indian who's doing the right thing by others and fulfilling his daitva to society. Here's how.

W

e human beings come with a purpose, rather an unsaid duty. The duty to serve others, to help others. A society transforms into a better society with goodwill and good hearts. It is our Daitva, our responsibility, to uplift the society and work for its betterment. There are many unsung, unheard heroes who are dong just the same, and one among them is Ashish Sood.

It was 2007 when Ashish arrived in Brisbane on a student visa, with nowhere to go. In the beginning two weeks of coming to Australia, he had to sleep rough in a park. It was only for two weeks, but he's

never forgotten how it felt. When he came to Australia to study hospitality and commercial cooking, he had a dream of one day owning his own restaurant. And when he finally did, knowing what it was like to sleep rough due to his first-hand experience, he wanted to do his part and feed the homeless.

More than 10 years later, now he has realised his dream and made good on his promise to help those less fortunate. Seven days a week, at closing, staff at Ginger and Garlic on Adelaide Street in the Brisbane CBD, divvy up any remaining curries, samosas, naan bread and pappadams and give them away to the homeless.

Ashish says he has been providing free food for the homeless for the past five months now. He knows all the regulars by name. They are mostly men, and some women with children. "I'm happy to give away whatever they want to eat," said Ashish.

The paying customers were encouraging him in his endeavours. "People are so happy. They've giving me thumbs up‌ they're helping me to keep doing more. I'm really happy about it," he said.

"I'm doing my best, that's all I can do for the homeless people. That makes me feel proud."

2019 IABCA Stars Networking Night held

he sixth Annual India Australia Business & Community Awards (IABCA) platform held an exclusive event on August 16 in honour of their talented pool of 2019 IABCA finalists from across the nation.

Punjabi association PWAA organises fundraising event

he Punjabi Welfare Association of Australia (PWAA) organised a fundraising event recently for a local DV shelter. Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner, Senator James McGrath, Senator Gerard Rennick, Senator Paul Scarr, Chief Superintendent Brian Swan and his team Queensland Police Service, and Councillor Angela Owen attended the event, among other guests.

The PWAA association has been formed by the Punjabis residing in the Australia to help people in need from all walks of life. The association is led by a group of experienced and humble professionals from various fields such as medicine (GPs), information technology, banking, entrepreneurs, etc., who wish to readily lend their services in supporting, guiding and helping the elderly who are leading a lonely life, and supporting the youth to achieve their goals.

2019 Friends of Mithra Bollywood Night

T

his year 126 people were dined and entertained at the 2019 Friends of Mithra Bollywood Night, held at St Joseph’s College at Gregory Terrace in Brisbane on Saturday night, 24th August.

Guests, dressed in Indian attire, enjoyed fabulous Indian cuisine from Dum n Rum, in Fortitude Valley. They were enthralled by a series of dances from the GAQ School of Dancing. There was

something for everyone – from raffle prizes to best dressed male and female. This year, we also had a photo booth from “Get a Photo Booth” which provided guest with a takeaway souvenir of photos of themselves with various props. The highlight of the night was when all the guests stood and participated in an interactive dance. There was much laughter and smiles shown.

Gold Coast's Indian community lauds Dr Maha Sinnathamby's OAM award and achievements

he Indian community in Gold Coast last month held a celebration party to honor and laud the achievements of Dr Maha Sinnathamby, especially his recent Order of Australia Medal that was awarded to him in June during the Queen’s Birthday award ceremonies.

Dr Maha Sinnathamby, AM was recognised for significant service to the building and construction sector, and to the community. Prior to

the Order of Australia recognition, he has been conferred with many accolades, including an honorary doctorate from the University of Southern Queensland, Centenary Medal for contribution to Regional Development; 2003 Ernst and Young Master Entrepreneur of the Year (Northern Region) among others. He is also a patron of the Federation of Indian Communities of Queensland and Global Organisation of People of Indian Origin (Queensland branch).

Bridge to Brisbane Fun Run

he Bridge to Brisbane Fun Run, in its 23rd year of existence, was organised on 25th August to raise funds for various charities.

The event that was participated in

by people from all walks of life was set off by the Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner. The event was made all the more lively by the 'dress up competition'. The participants were attired in different costumes, and not only individual but group

dress-up were also seen. The route included the Go Between Bride, Victoria Bridge and Story Bridge.

Total amount collected towards charity was over AUD 779,000, and the proceeds were distributed amount various charities.

Brisbane Lions welcome new citizens to multicultural Australia

efore the Lions took on the Western Bulldogs for Round 20 of the AFL, the Club hosted its third annual citizenship ceremony in Jurgens Street Park, directly opposite The Gabba. The ceremony coincided with Multicultural Queensland Month in August.

The public citizenship ceremony commenced at 2pm at Jurgens Street Park, with festivities kicking off at 3pm. Following the public ceremony, multicultural cuisine and food was served, and all the new citizens were then welcomed into The Gabba to form a guard of honour.

They then sat back and watched the Brisbane Lions game.

Sathiya Narayanan Ramakrishnan, originally from India, was one of the forty-nine conferees from twenty-four countries who became new Australians.

"Becoming an Australian citizen is my way of thanking this country for providing me and my family with good opportunities. I want to become a good bridge between Australian and Indian cultures. I am passionate about community development and healthcare and I will keep contributing my expertise in these areas," Ramakrishnan said.

The Lions, along with their community partner, Multicultural Development Australia, are passionate about integrating new people from different cultures and backgrounds into Australian society. Lions CEO Greg Swann said he hopes the new citizens will feel welcomed by the Club.

“Sport unites people, so what better way to welcome forty-nine new Australians than to host them here at The Gabba to watch our great game,” he had said previously before. “We are all about inclusion

here at the Lions and we hope by the end of Sunday’s game we would have endeared some new fans.”

Minister for Multicultural Affairs Stirling Hinchliffe had also said he is proud to join with the Brisbane Lions during the Multicultural Queensland Month in promoting and celebrating Queensland’s diversity.

“The Club is one of the inaugural members of the Multicultural Queensland Ambassador Program and has been kicking goals on and off the field for community cohesion and inclusion,” Mr Hinchliffe said. “I also congratulate the Lions on hosting the Citizenship Ceremony and Multicultural Family Fun Day on Sunday as part of Multicultural Queensland Month.

Farewell dinner honours outgoing Indian High Commissioner H.E. Dr A.M. Gondane By: Mahadevan Shankar

ICQ with the support of AIBC, GOPIO QLD and GOPIO Gold Coast hosted a farewell dinner on Sunday, 1 September, in honour of the outgoing Indian High Commissioner, H.E. Dr A.M. Gondane and his wife Mrs Varsha Gondane.

Dr. Gondane will be finishing his posting in Australia in September 2019 after nearly three years of diplomatic services promoting bilateral relations between both countries. During his tenure, both nations have witnessed highest levels of engagement in areas of trade, cultural exchanges, tourism, education, defense, sports and stronger bonding between both countries, resulting in higher appreciation of the Indian community diaspora in Australian society.

Most speakers acknowledged Dr. Gondane for his humility, passion and easygoing and friendly person-

ality that enabled everyone to easily access his office to get the prompt services and assistance when required.

Dr Gondane rightly said during one of his many interactions with the Queensland's Indian community, "India as an idea has arrived with great vigour, and it's up to each citizen and overseas diaspora to ride the wave towards growth and prosperity."

Chinmaya Mission Brisbane celebrates Janmashtmi

hinmaya Mission Brisbane completed its 11th year in Brisbane on Shree Krishna Janmashtami day. What started with a small group of families 11 years ago has now expanded into three branches -- Holland Park (East), Heathwood (West) and Bridgeman Downs (North) -- to enrich over a hundred families in Brisbane.

This year, the Krishna Janmashtami festival was celebrated in a more elaborate manner in all the three branches. Children learnt about the significance of the birth of Krishna and how we pray to inculcate qualities of Lord Krishna to lead happy, fulfilling lives that make a positive contribution in the world. Activities

included devotional bhajans singing glories of Lord Krishna, meditation, role play, games, trivia, arts/ craft and breaking the butter pot.

The audience also participated in an animated and informative quiz conducted by Junior Chinmaya Yuva Kendra on the life of Lord Krishna.

The mission's guru, Swami Shrikaranandaji, sent a special message and blessings to all the members from Sydney on this auspicious occasion.

The celebrations concluded with a sumptuous and delicious, shared vegetarian prasad.

Krishna Janmasthmi celebrated by SSDHAQ in Berrinba

hree Sanatan Dharam Hindu Association of QLD Inc (SSDHAQ) celebrated Krishna Janmasthmi at QVCC Hall, 198 Learoyd Road, Berrinba from Friday 16th August, 2019 to Saturday 24th August, 2019. That's over nine days, with the celebrations ending with a record turnout of over 350 devotees on the final day.

Besides the chanting of melodious Kirtans, Guruji Pt Hirdesh Maharaj Pandey delivered his Prachar, along with his blessings, to the devotees.

The organisers of the celebrations, SSDHAQ officials, thanked those who made the nine days of celebrations a success with the Indian community from the region, "We like to say thank you to the mandalis,

Spiritual discourse on Bhagavad Gita held

A

spiritual discourse on “Towards Better Living, Through the Bhagavad Gita" by Mahamahopadhyay Bhadreshdas Swamiji was organised on 10th August at Queensland Multicultural Centre in Kangaroo Point. The discourse was organised by Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha (BAPS) Shri Swaminarayan Temple.

Bhadreshdas Swami is a Sanskrit scholar and monk of the BAPS, who has done three decades of research in Sanskrit, Hindu Scriptures and Indian Philosophies. After Shankaracharya's bhashya, this is the first time in 1,200 years that a bhashya has been written by an author, Sadhu Bhadreshdas, on all three texts of

the Prashthantrayi (Bhagvat Gita, Bhrama Sutras and Upanishad).

Immediately afterwards, the Swami was guided by Pramukh Swami Maharaj to write the Swaminarayan Bhasyam, a feat last achieved 275 years ago by the Vedic Archaryas.

Bhadreshdas Swamiji wanted to discuss his work and a better understanding of the Indian Philosophy and Hindu Scriptures internationally. Therefore, he travelled to 18 countries, 81 institutions and consulted 128 scholars within 17 months.

He is the recipient of 62 honorary certificates from highly prestigious universities like Harvard and University of Berlin.

Divine Associations of Parijat Tree

T

he Parijat tree (Nyctanthes arbor-tristis) is not only considered a sacred tree but it also has divine origins. Other names for the tree include night-flowering jasmine, coral jasmine and Harsingar (ornament of the gods).The flower is called Shefali or Siuli in Bengal and it is the official flower of the state of West Bengal.

The sight and scent of the flower is loved and longed for by the people, as it is said to be a prelude to Navratri (The nine nights of Divine Mother).

The tree is said to fulfil wishes and gives happiness.

Its purity and usefulness It is a small to medium, fast growing tree, native to southeast and south Asia. The flower of the Parijat tree is small and pure white with an orange throat or stem, the flower looks a little like a jasmine blossom, but the perfume smells like no other, it is very sweet and could be compared to honey. The flowers are used in perfume making and for making incense. An orange dye is made from the flower and it was used to dye the cloth of the Buddhist monk. It is also used as a natural food colouring in some rural areas. The leaves of the tree are very rough like sandpaper. They are also eaten in some rural areas as well. These leaves are used extensively in Ayurveda medicines.

The flower of the Parijat cannot be made impure by contact with the earth. As it is one of only two flowers that can be picked up from the ground and offered to the Gods.

These flowers, the purest white with throats or hearts of orange are also a favourite of the Divine Mother. This is the night-flowering jasmine that is offered during Navratri. The flower is again offered to Maa Durga at the time of Durga Pooja. The flowers are also offered to Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu.

Lord Krishna and the Parijat Tree

The Parijat tree along with other divine treasures came from the churning of the milky ocean called “Samudra Manthan.” There are many stories about the Parijat tree, one of them is from the pastimes of Lord Krishna, when the Lord was living on the earth. Narad Muni, the son of Lord Brahma, a firm devotee of Lord Vishnu and a divine messenger, he is sometimes described as a “stirrer” or a “mischief-maker”. He brought Lord Krishna a flower from the Parijat tree to offer to his favourite wife. Lord Krishna offered it to the humblehearted queen Rukmini.

Then Narada went to Lord Krishna’s very wealthy and proud third wife and asked her where was the Parijat flowers he had brought to Lord Krishna to give to his favourite wife.

Queen Satyabhama was on fire with jealousy having realised that the flowers had been given to another queen.

Queen Satyabhama went to the “sulking room” in the palace; tormented by her jealousy. Eventually Lord Krishna went to the sulking room to try and pacify her. Nothing could pacify or satisfy her except for a promise of not only a flower from the Parijat tree, but also the actual divine tree. Lord Krishna vowed that he would soon plant the Parijat tree in her garden as a sign of his love and devotion for her.

The Parijat tree was already planted in the heavenly gardens of Lord Indra at Indralok. The tree was a favourite of Lord Indra’s wife. The tree was also symbolic of the power and status of Lord Indra as both King of Heaven and Lord of the Gods. Not yet satisfied with his mischief making Narad Muni proceeded to Indralok and warned Lord Indra that someone from the earth had planned to steal the divine Parijat tree. It is told that Lord Krishna went to the Heavenly gardens (Nandana-vana). A fight ensued between Lord Krishna and Lord Indra who was waiting for the culprit who was about to steal the

tree. There was a great battle and Lord Krishna proved to be victorious. Lord Krishna took the tree and brought it to earth and as promised he planted it in the garden of Queen Satyabhama in Dwarka. The story says that the flowers of the Parijat tree however, fell into the garden of the favourite wife Queen Rukmini. Yet, somehow, Lord Krishna managed to please both his wives.

The Sad Tree There is another beautiful legend about the Parijat tree; this story involves the Sun God, Surya. The lovely Princess Parijat fell madly in love with Surya. She was an earthbound princess and he was a Divine Being. Princess Parijat’s incredible love brought Surya to the earth, but he could not stay for long. He had one condition before marrying the princess that she could never turn away from him. They were married in the autumn and spent winter and spring together in heavenly bliss. By the time the summer months had arrived the intense heat and power of Surya proved disastrous for the princess, it burned Princess Parijat’s delicate skin and she turned from him and fainted away. Despite being totally devoted to Surya, the princess could not tolerate the intense heat of the Sun God. The princess had broken the one condition of their marriage and Surya left for his divine abode.

Some say that this was a story of unrequited love and Princess Parijat killed

herself or died of a broken heart; such was the intensity of her love for the Sun God that she burnt herself to ashes. It was from these ashes a tree grew up and this tree was the Parijat tree. That is why it is named the sad tree (Nyctanthes arbor-tristis) or tree of sorrow. Still, the Parijat tree cannot bear the touch of the sun on her flowers. It’s said that the Sun God still visits her in the night hours and kisses the blossoms of the tree. Put in romantic language, the flowers drop from the tree in the early hours of the morning, often referred to as “Brahma Muhurta”, time of God, before the sun falls on them. Some say the flowers falling are like teardrops, yet another reason she is called the sad tree; she is still weeping for her lover Lord Surya. The flowers soon form a fragrant honey scented carpet of white and orange blossoms on the ground mixed with the freshness of dew drops.

Rabindranath Tagore composed a beautiful song about Parijat flowers called “Shiuli Phool” and in it he asks the tree why she has to drop her flowers at dawn; what is the reason for her anxiety.

Saintly Associations There are also associations with Paramhansa Ramakrishna; the Parijat tree was one of about 38 plants and trees that were planted in grounds of the Panchavati in Dakshineswar, Bengal. No doubt Paramhansa Ramakrishna offered them in the temple to

It’s said that Paramhansa Yogananda used to spend many hours under the Parijat tree, the little white flowers would fall down and he would meditate there or just cry, perhaps for his own mother who had passed away or perhaps for the Divine Cosmic Mother.

To add some confusion to this mix, there is also another tree known as “Kalp-Vraksh”, or wish bearing tree that people refer to as the Parijat tree in India, this magnificent tree is Baobab tree Kintur village, Barabanki, Uttar Pradesh, India. This same Baobab tree is called the “Tree of Life” in Africa and is a sacred tree. Likewise we have Baobab trees in Australia, but that’s another story.

t John’s Performing Arts Centre at Forest Lake reverberated with the sound of Classical Indian music on 31st of August. The students of Nadananjali School of Dance, under the guidance of Smt. Chitra Yogi Srikhanta, presented an evening of exquisite dances called Narthana Mala. The event was organised to aid the Brisbane Chapter Vedanta Centre.

The hard work of the students and their teacher had paid off as the audience lauded their performance. The event was attended by several dignitaries. It started with a prayer dance and Smt. Chitra Yogi Srikhanta was felicitated for her dedication and commitment to this art form.

Classical dance lovers treated to Mega Thiruvathira

F

or the first time in Queensland, a group of over 300 women came together to perform the most graceful Thiruvathira, a dance form originating from Kerala, the southern state of India. Thiruvathira is often performed during the harvest festival, Onam, by groups of eight to ten women from all backgrounds, religion, caste or creed.

Dhwani, a not-for-profit organisation formed by a group of women from Brisbane that aims at promoting female talent of Indian ethnicity, presented this cultural extravaganza

with mega Thiruvathira as the centrepiece attraction.

The `mega’ version of Thiruvathira has gained popularity all over the world in recent years and has further expanded the cultural diaspora by going beyond the state of Kerala alone. Women, in traditional attire, form a circular pattern and move rhythmically to a melodious background song. Several first-time dancers trained with vastly experienced Thiruvathira performers over the last several months to prepare for this memorable event.

The day comprised of other outstanding programs by notable artistes, including Mohiniyattam

by Ms. Bindu Rajendran, a dance performer, researcher and educator. Bharatnatyam was performed

by Ms. Navya Rattehalli, a classical dance performer. There was also a semi-classical song by Ms. Sushmita Ravi, a popular carnatic music vocalist and educator.

Chenda Melam, a percussion ensemble, made the day a memorable one. The day concluded with a grand vegetarian feast, traditionally called ‘Sadhya’.

Mithra receives sale proceeds of new children’s book

M

ithra, a school for the physically and intellectually disadvantaged in Chennai, has received 50% of the proceeds from the sale of a new children’s book 'Kind to Me'. The book is written by psychologist Danielle Sellick.

Sellick has over 20 years experience in psychology and has written the book to encourage self care and compassion in young children.

“Self-compassion is a skill children need to be taught at a young age to maximise their emotional health and increase happiness, confidence and motivation,” says Sellick.

The book, 'Kind to Me', teaches

strategies such as relaxation and mindfulness. There are also tips for parents on modelling self-compassion and emotional resilience.

Friends of Mithra acting president Nick Lux said they were extremely grateful for the book and hoped to send a few copies to India for the students. In this regard Lux says, “There is really a nice synergy with the book and what Mithra does, as they both provide support for parents.”

Hyped!!: Live interactive children’s show to be launched A Gold Coast-based production house, Wild Dreamer Productions, is all set to debut a new live and interactive children’s show. Hyped!! is the brainchild of Gold Coast entertainers, Barbara Prestia, Chantal Bryan and Toni Melrose. The show aims to deliver positive and collaborative messages via an interactive 'game show' style format.

I selected master level course in Australia, which will start from Feb 2020. I am starting my graduation attached with the course for first 6 months. So, I want to know can my partner work full time or 20 hours while I am doing this 6-month course? Also, can I change the course as the current course is not in PR visa list.

Answer: Thank you for the email. Your partner can work 40 hours per fortnight at this stage. He can get unlimited working hours once you start the Master level course at the university, not at this stage. Regarding change of course, you must complete 6 months of the principal course (here it is Master level course) as per the legislation. Otherwise, you need release from the current provider to join another provider if you choose to move out earlier than the mandatory period prescribed.

Please note that while joining a new course, it should be the same level course or higher-level course of Australian Qualification Framework

(AQF) level. Only exception to this requirement is dropping a PhD (Doctoral degree) to Master course.

In case the new course you wish to join is at lower level, you must apply for a new student visa.

Question from S. Mary I am on a 457 visa for last couple of years in hospitality sector. My employer shut down the business and I moved to another job, which is not related with my nomination.

Recently I received a notice for visa cancellation, and I replied to the request. What is the consequence if my visa is cancelled?

Answer: It is mandatory visa condition (8107) that the holder of 457 visa (currently TSS visa) must comply with work limitations. The nominee must work with the sponsor employer in the nominated occupation while holding the visa.

However, if the visa holder gets a new nomination approved by the Department for another employer, the visa holder is free to join the new job.

In your case, the employer closed the business, and it was not duly informed to the Department as

well, as advised. In other words, you must have found another sponsor within 60 days after losing the job due to closure of business. At this stage, you are in violation of condition 8107, hence you received the notice mentioned. If the Department decides to cancel the visa, you have the option to appeal at AAT against the decision. However, you will be placed under S48 of Migration Act restrictions to apply for another substantive visa while in Australia.

Question from K. Das My brother served in military overseas and holds certain recognised qualifications equivalent to graduation from the military service.

Can he apply for higher education student visa to Australia? Will his service be counted for student visa?

Answer: The admission for overseas citizens to Australian educational institutions is mainly governed by ESOS Act. As an overseas citizen, he is eligible to seek admission with an Australian education provider. He has to check with the admission criteria set by the providers, which are different for various courses and institutions.

It is very important the courses he completed during service period are recognised and at par with Australian standard set by the legislation. For admission to Australian universities and other higher education providers, individual institutions will determine which overseas qualifications they recognise, and the institution will inform you during the admissions process if you need to undertake qualification assessment.

Question from G. Hussain I am an Australian citizen and looking towards sponsoring and bringing my mother to Australia on permanent basis. It can be temporary for the moment but I prefer to bring her for long term. Which options would suit me and also how much would it cost me?

Answer: Thank you for the email. Your mother can be brought to Australia based on her eligibility to apply for parent visa to Australia. There are permanent and temporary parent visas available in Australia visa regime. Obviously, requirements are different for various classes of parent visas.

Diana Penty to shoot for 'Shiddat' in September

iana Penty is all set to start working on her new project, “Shiddat”, next month. The actor has said that she is keen to work with Maddock Films, the production house that gave her “Cocktail”, her Bollywood debut film.

Shiddat is a love story, which is directed by Kunal Deshmukh.

The film will also feature Radhika Madan, Sunny Kaushal and Mohit Raina. The movie will see Diana star opposite Mohit, and Radhika will be seen pairing with Sunny. The film is expected to be shot across Punjab, Paris and London.
