Dear Readers, So Sadhguru was in Brisbane, and at least a couple thousand people attended his session. Besides these 2000, who are totally his fans now I reckon, his online Inner Engineering program has calmed down more than two million people by reducing their stress levels and helping them live a peaceful life. I know the magnitude of his pull full well. So when I heard the news of his coming Brisbane visit, I knew he'd make the cover of our August issue. Chandrayaan 2's success is a testimony to women's abilities in science and technology. I hear it was the first project in ISRO to be directed by a woman. Also, 30 percent of Chandrayaan-2 team were women. For me, that shuts off the argument that women can't make good scientists. With women like ISRO scientists and men like Sadhguru, who are really moving and shaking the world today and not throwing their weight about like other leaders, I can't help feeling proud of people of Indian origin. We're bloody good. With August comes the Multicultural Queensland Month, giving us all the reason to celebrate the unique diversity in Queensland. We'll keep a close watch on the various multicultural events and celebrations happening in the community. Our coming September issue will carry these reports and events coverage.

Chandrayaan-2 a testimony to women power

It is also said to be costeffective.

Celebratory dinner marks Indian community leaders’ achievements

ueensland’s Indian community was in jubilant mood after two of its brightest community leaders bagged the Order of Australia awards. To celebrate the twin achievements, celebratory dinner was held on July 11 at the Emporium Hotel, South Bank. The dinner also supported the INAS Global Games, which seek to "empower persons with intellectual disability", as the funds raised at the function were donated exclusively towards bringing the Indian Team to the games in Brisbane. Brisbane’s Dr Maha Sinnathamby, AM was recognised for significant service to the building and construction sector, and to the community. Prior to the Order of Australia recognition, he has been conferred with many accolades, including an honorary doctorate from the University of Southern Queensland, Centenary Medal for contribution

to Regional Development; 2003 Ernst and Young Master Entrepreneur of the Year (Northern Region) among others. He is also a patron of the Federation of Indian Communities of Queensland and Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (Queensland branch). Brisbane’s Prof. Arun Kumar Sharma, AM was recognised for significant service to computer science and information technology. The Queensland University of Technology’s Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research and Innovation) has made many noteworthy contributions in a wide range of areas, as he straddles the worlds of university, research and industry. Besides Dr Maha Sinnathamby and Prof. Arun Kumar Sharma, the other distinguished public figures present at the dinner were Councillor Angela Owen, Dr Ram Mohan, President, FICQ, Mrs Archana Singh, Honorary Consul of India, Brisbane, among others.

olitical drama unfolded in Karnataka last month after Congress-Janata Dal (Secular) coalition led by Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy lost a crucial trust vote, which was called after a spate of defections by its legislators. This is not the first time that a political drama has been enacted in Karnataka. However, this one could push the state on the brink of another assembly election. How the trust vote went The confidence motion ended the 425-day-old government in the state, which is only the fourth coalition administration in the

state. Besides the 15 members who resigned from the coalition, five others -- two independent members, two Congress legislators and the lone Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA -- were unable to turn up for the vote. BJP’s gain The collapse of the Congress-JD (S) proved to be gain for the BJP and particularly for its former chief minister of the state B.S. Yeddyurappa, who got the coveted post once again. BJP formed the government in Karnataka with support of 105 MLAs, but they will not find it easy either because they also have a very thin majority, which could vanish

any time. Moreover, for BJP Yeddyurappa has been a difficult person to rein in at times. Rebel trouble The 15 rebels who have been allured to move out of the coalition may resort to demanding ministerial berths if the BJP stakes claim to form the next government in Karnataka. This won’t be an easy job for the next government and has the potential to mar its formation. In any case, another state election is perhaps looming large, given the current political situation in the state.

Death toll mounts in Bihar In Bihar floods, the death toll had reached 123 in the deluge last month. As many as 12 districts of Bihar had been badly affected following flash floods after torrential rains hit the catchment areas of neighbouring Nepal. Rescue operations are on in full swing, but much needs to be done and rehabilitation of the victims will be a challenge for the state.

Greater Springfield founders inducted to Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame Greater Springfield visionaries and founders Maha Sinnathamby and Bob Sharpless were inducted to the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame on July 16.

Mr Sinnathamby and Mr Sharpless were recognised for their incredible achievement in front of 800 guests from Queensland’s business community at a gala dinner at Brisbane’s Convention Centre. Now in its 11th year, the Queensland Business Leaders Hall of Fame was established by the QUT Business School, State Library of Queensland and the Queensland Library Foundation to recognise the significant contributions made by businesses and their leaders to the state’s reputation, and economic and social development. Mr Sinnathamby and Mr Sharpless have been the visionaries and drivers behind creating Greater Springfield - an undertaking which former Australian Prime Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, described as a “nation-

building project of national significance.” The city is now 27 years in the making, with a population of more than 41,000 and a predicted growth rate of seven percent per annum over the next two decades. When Mr Sinnathamby first came across the parcel of land now known as Greater Springfield, it was a corridor deemed as economically and socially depressed, with only 10 percent of the land zoned for residential development. Fast-forward to today, Australia’s newest emerging city is part of the fastest growing region in SouthEast Queensland and is home to 11 schools with 15,000 students, a TAFE, the University of Southern Queensland and Mater Springfield Private Hospital. Mr Sinnathamby said while he was extremely proud to accept the award with Mr Sharpless, the success of Greater Springfield was the result of a collaborative effort of many individuals. “While this is humbling recognition

for my business partner and me, we must also pay tribute to the many hundreds of people who helped build this city and the 41,000 residents who now call Greater Springfield home,” Mr Sinnathamby said. “Being inducted to the Hall of Fame is an acknowledgement and testimony that with passion and dedication and a never-give-up attitude, anyone can benefit from this great state.” Mr Sharpless said he was incredibly proud to bring Greater Springfield to life.

Guru Purnima event with Srinivas Arka held

Yogi-ji has visited New Zealand, Australia and Fiji more recently and spent time addressing mental health conferences and met people that were affected by natural and manmade disasters within the region. Srinivas Arka is a world-renowned philosopher, inspirational speaker and author. He has developed Human Positive Potential Programmes and is a founder of the Centre for Conscious Awareness (CCA) registered charities worldwide. Highly regarded for his lectures, workshops and books, his work has inspired people around

the world to explore and develop their intuitive awareness, thus helping them to achieve a more balanced and fulfilling life for themselves and where possible helping those around them. Besides inspirational talks, the event also featured musical recitals and devotional singing on the occasion. A spiritual rendering on this occasion was offered by Mrs Nisha Rao and her colleagues. The programme was organised by Arun Raniga and Heena Solanki on behalf of Brisbane Centre for Conscious Awareness (CCA). Nelson Mandela Day observed in Brisbane

The United Nations in November 2009 passed a resolution declaring July 18 as Nelson Mandela International Day in recognition of the former South African President’s contribution to “the culture of peace and freedom.” The United Nations invites people worldwide to mark Mandela Day by making a difference in their communities. “Everyone has the ability and the responsibility to change the world for the better! Mrs. Sudha Nair from MAQ has been at the forefront of all the donor drives for the last couple of years, along with founder and president of Simply Human Inc., Ms. Prerna Pahwa. This drive is a ray of hope for many people like Sujith and his family in Brisbane. Sujith, an IT engineer, was tested for Philadelphia chromosome - positive acute lymphoblastic

leukemia three years ago. It is a type of cancer that happens to very few people. Since the diagnosis, Sujith has had six rounds of chemotherapy. A solution to his ordeal is bone marrow replacement. However, finding a donor for Sujith is like finding a needle in a stack of straws. One problem is that the people of Indian origin register very little for the bone marrow donation. Anju, Sujith's wife says, "People do not even know about the process of bone marrow donation. Less people register for that reason." MAQ is the first community organisation to undertake Bone Marrow Donor drives, and they certainly

have set an example for other organisations to follow. BAPS holds Rath Yatra in Kingston

he Hindu festival of â€˜Rath Yatraâ€™ (chariot procession) was celebrated with fanfare at the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir at Kingston, Brisbane on Saturday 6th July, 2019 in the holy presence of Pujya Vimalsevadas Swami and Pujya Brahmasmarandas Swami. Rath Yatra is a religious tradition suffused with devotional sentiments for the Lord. For thousands of years, Hindus have celebrated this spec-

tacular festival. Gathering together, they earnestly pray to the Lord to steer the chariots of their lives on the path of devotion and faith. Based on the ancient tradition of parading the Murtis of the Lord in decorated chariots at Jaggannathpuri, towards the end of the assembly, three decorated raths, one bearing the murti of Harikrishna Maharaj, one bearing the murtis of Jaggannathji, Baldevji and Subadhraji and one bearing the murti of Pramukh Swami Maharaj, were

pulled by the BAPS Mahila and Balika Mandal. The procession was taken to the neighbouring streets of the Kingston BAPS Swaminarayan temple. This grand event was attended by around 800 devotees along with other special invited guests like Archana Singh, Honorary Consul of India, Brisbane, Palani Thewar, Umesh Chandara and Usha Chandra. The celebration was concluded with arti and mahaprasad.

GAQ seniors’ picnic organised

Kannada Sangha Queensland’s Support sought for new executive children’s welfare team announced

are Kids for Kids Qld, a not-for-profit charitable community group of volunteers, has called upon community members to support their activities by donating items such as new or handcrafted donation of cloths, toiletry, educational items, soft toys, etc., so as to provide care to children in crisis.

There are currently over 9600 children in out-of-home care in Queensland alone. The volunteers from Care Kids for Kids Qld go around and collect new or handcrafted donation of cloths, toiletry, educational items, and soft toys and send them to Care Kids at their Bulimba Community Centre.

QCF Conference 2019 on immigration and citizenship organised

he 6th Queensland Chinese Forum (QCF) Conference 2019 was held on 6th July at Brisbane City Hall. The QCF Conference 2019 offered a forum for presentations and discussions on topics relevant to migrants settling in Queensland. Some of the topics pertained to immigration, citizenship, customs and border protection; medicare and human services; taxation on small business and personal; education at all levels; and fair work. Tree plantation drive held

APS Shri Swaminarayan Temple at Kingston, in association with the Logan City Council, organised a tree plantation drive on 13th July at the Mary Park, Kingston. The drive was part of BAPS Swaminarayan Sansthaâ€™s initiative to organise treeplanting campaigns throughout the world. About 25 volunteers from all age groups got together and put in 90 volunteer-hours to make this drive successful. According to the organisers of this

drive, these efforts give individuals the ability to be directly involved in improving their environment, and instill in them a sense of shared ownership of the planet at the individual and community levels. BAPS, being a socio-spiritual organisation, is at the forefront of the social responsibility and commitment to protect and enrich the environment globally. Their purpose in organising such drives is to bring environmental awareness among the youth and also to develop the feeling of giving back to the community they live in.

Cultural show marks Kairaliâ€™s 10th Anniversary celebrations

Besides the cultural activities, a sumptuous feast was also organised on the occasion. BSK to organise Vinayaka Chathurthi celebrations on September 1

ala Samskar Kendra (BSK) Queensland is celebrating its annual Vinayaka Chathurthi at Sunnybank High School in Brisbane and at Benowa State High School in Gold Coast on 1st September. BSK celebrates Vinayaka Chathurthi every year to make children, who are growing up in Queensland, aware of the Hindu culture so that they can also appreciate the significance of the festival. The festival is a family event. During the event, the significance of the festival and the symbolic representation of Vinayaka are explained to

children. Children get an opportunity to make their own clay Vinayaka. The clay will be provided to the children by BSK. The event can be attended free of cost. However, registration is compulsory in order to arrange for the clay and for other logistic purposes. The attendees can also order ecofriendly clay Vinayaka from BSK at a nominal cost. BSK has been supplying eco-friendly clay Vinayaka at a nominal cost to the Hindu community of Brisbane on the occasion of Vinayaka Chathurthi since 2013. The clay that is used has a beautiful warm terracotta colour, which is ideal for Vinayaka idols.

Janmastami celebrations in Brisbane to be bigger this year

This year’s Janmastami celebrations are likely to witness plays, live music and dance programmes. Four deaths in temple stampede puts festival in spotlight

This year the festival is being held from July 1 August 17. In the past, the Athivaradar festival was held on 18/8/1854, 13/6/1892, 12/7/1937, 2/7/1979. The idol made of fig wood was brought out from a silver vault inside Anantha Saras, the temple park on June 28. The last time it

happened was in July 1979. For the first 24 days, Lord Vardhar would offer darshan in reclining posture and the next 24 days in standing posture. As per legends, during the divine Yagya, Lord Vishwakarma made a statue of Srivaradaraja Swamy with the fig tree as ordered by Lord Brahma. The Swami has been worshiped for hundreds of years. However, during the invasion of the Mohammedans in the 16th century, the Srivaradarajaswamy temple was looted. In order to avoid any harm to the image of Srivari, it was placed in a silver vault inside Anantha Saras, the temple tank. Thereafter it was brought out every forty years for worship. edic Heroes, a series of picture books written by Gold Coast-based pharmacist Madhuri Soni, was launched on 6th July at the Robina Community Centre on the Gold Coast. This series was aimed at introducing young children to Hindu gods and goddesses. The books are written in rhyme and portray the deities in a fun and interactive way through bright and vivid illustrations. All proceeds raised from the event were donated to â€˜The Golden Avataar Trustâ€™, a school based in West Bengal, India, that would help in educating disadvantaged children. The first two books of the series are

The Ashoka Tree: Divine Associations By Sharon Bath reat reverence and admiration for trees has been a worldwide phenomenon, especially with our ancestors who held trees in very high regard. The motif of the tree has spread its roots throughout time into the many cultures and religions of mankind, making it one of the most potent symbols of spirituality and divinity. In India sacred trees have not only been revered but they have also been worshipped and they are being worshipped and honoured to this very day. From ancient Hindu scriptures we find predictions about our current age - called the Kali Yuga. One of the signs that we are in this Iron Age (known as the age of darkness) is that mankind will cut down trees indiscriminately: “When dharma declines, human beings despoil nature.” Climate change was also written about in the Holy Scriptures, it is told to us that if we cut down trees we will suffer both drought and floods, something the earth is now seeing in greater proportion during these current times. The scriptures also warn us that famine follows drought. The Rig Veda says: “Do not trouble the trees. Do not uproot or cut them. They provide protection to animals, birds and other living beings.” On the other hand Hindu scriptures give us the assurance that if we plant and care for trees, not only will we have the earthly benefits, fresh air, fruits, flowers, wood, etc., we will be given shelter in the afterlife. Not only are we promised the higher spiritual heavens, even our ancestors will be benefitted by our good actions. In the Hindu scriptures trees are respected, praised and glorified, their worth is highly valued and they are often compared to good sons and gentlemen. Devi Parvati exalts trees even further as you will discover when you read about the Ashoka tree. The Ashoka Tree The Ashoka Tree or Sita Ashok (Saraca Asoca) is a rainforest tree from the legume family; it is sacred to Nepal, India and Sri Lanka. The tree originates in India and is widely grown in various places including the Himalayas, Bengal and the south of India. It is grown in parks and near temples. It is a vulnerable species in the wild; however there are still some wild Ashok trees in the Himalayas. It is a small to medium evergreen tree. The Ashoka tree is a handsome tree with a spreading habit and dense clusters of long glossy, green leaves. The new growth (leaves) has a pinkish copper colour and this colouration in the leaves is one sure way to distinguish the tree from the other imposters. The flowers look similar to Ixora flowers and are often confused with Ixora plants. The flowers are at first a yellow-orange turning an orange-red in colour, they make

an amazing display, and when fully in bloom, the tree appears to be on fire with the gorgeous blooms. The flowers also have a sweet fragrance and are used in perfume making. Butterflies love these flowers! Divine Associations This enchanting tree so evocatively rich with divine associations has surely much to tell. It is recorded in the scriptures that Devi Parvati raised and nurtured an Ashok tree. She watered and cared for this tree as a family member. Divine beings came and asked her: “O Mother, everyone wants children. When people see their children and grandchildren they think they have been successful. What do you achieve by creating and rearing trees like sons?” Devi Parvati replied: “One who digs a well where there is a little water lives in heaven for as many years as there are drops of water in it. One large reservoir of water is worth ten wells. One son is like ten reservoirs, and one tree is equal to ten sons. This is my standard and I will protect the universe to safeguard it.” If anyone seriously reflects on Devi Parvati’s words, one can never look at a tree in the same way again. It is said that the Ashoka tree was one of Devi Sita’s favourite trees. It is mentioned in the Holy Scriptures that soon after Devi Sita and Lord Rama were married they went on a journey somewhere and came across a beautiful sparkling river and a grove of Ashoka trees. Maa Sita was so overwhelmed by their beauty she would not travel any further, imploring her husband to stay on at this location for a few days in order to enjoy the amazing ambiance of the sacred grove. It’s quite likely that with the first mention of Ashoka trees, if you already know the epic tale called the Ramayana; in your mind’s eye you would have already pictured Devi Sita, Lord Rama’s virtuous wife sitting demurely in the garden at King Ravana’s palace in Sri Lanka, guarded by a host of female demons, surrounded by a grove of Ashoka trees. Devi Sita looking so graceful and heart wrenchingly sad, yearning constantly for the Lord and yet somehow subtly supported by these fine beings, the Ashoka trees, the trees without sorrow. It is recorded in the Ramayana that it was in this garden of Ashoka trees (Ashoka Vatika) at Sri Lanka that Devi Sita first met the mighty warrior Lord - Hanuman. This supernatural monkey Hanuman proved to be key in Devi Sita’s eventual release from Sri Lanka. After learning that the Ashoka tree is prized by the Devi, it will come as no surprise that in Ayurveda the Ashoka tree is the tree that looks after all of the female complaints. Medicines and tonics are made from the seeds, flowers, and bark. Besides being helpful for gynaecological problems, it is also wonderful for the complexion. It is thought

that women benefit by being in the company of the tree. The more sensitive souls may even experience it. In past times and perhaps today women would drink the water after having immersed the blossoms of Ashoka tree. They would also eat the buds. The Ashoka tree is also a symbol of love. ICC CWC 2019: Drama galore, but cricket the ultimate winner Though England lifted the World Cup, Kane Williamson held aloft the spirit of cricket as a gentlemen’s game, writes Devashish Chakraborty

he ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 is now history, and as witness to this spectacle, we are in a position to analyse what ought to have been but could not be because perhaps it was destined otherwise. As they say, ‘cricket is a game of glorious uncertainties’, and this is precisely what the World Cup 2019 held out for us to behold. While England were the favourites to win this year, Australia and India were not far behind. It just needed a stroke of luck for both these teams to overhaul their opponents, which, however, did not happen. Then, the Final at Lords had all the ingredients of a much-awaited romantic comedy, full of rollercoaster ride, drama and comedy of errors. In the end, the Kiwis did not lose, though on record England won the World Cup. It was an evenly fought contest and the game of cricket emerged triumphant. However, the question arises, could India have made it to the Final? Complacency root cause of India’s loss The World Cup Final did not quite lit up in the absence of a team from the subcontinent. That India would lose tamely to New Zealand was least expected. After a sterling bowling performance, India had managed to restrict the Kiwis to a score that should not have bothered the likes of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. May be it is too much to expect of the top order of India to do the bulk of scoring and win matches for them throughout a big tournament like the World Cup. This time around, luck also played spoilsport in the form of a raininterspersed semi-final between India and New Zealand, which went on for two days. If the match had ended on the first day, who knows what might have happened,

especially when Indians were on a high. The next day is always another day, and apparently the Indians seemed to have taken it for granted that their place in the Final was guaranteed. However, Kane Williamson and his side had other ideas and caused an unlikely upset that left many Indian fans heart-broken. Drama at Lords on the Final day While India’s absence from the Final may have dented the spirits of many Indian fans, the spectacle at Lords between England and New Zealand has left many spellbound and feeling money and time have been well spent. The match was a cliff-hanger, with all the ingredients for a nail-biting finish. However, the talking point even now is, had the Sri Lankan umpire Dharamasena not awarded six runs when the ball crossed the boundary after a deflection off Ben Stokes bat, what might have been the outcome. As TV replays showed later, Stokes and his partner at the other end had not completed the second run when the ball had hit his bat and went to the boundary. It was an error that went unnoticed till the end of the match. But all this has now gone into the history books. What is remarkable is New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson’s poise and composure throughout the match and post its outcome. A true gentleman that he is, he is the embodiment of the spirit of game of cricket, which used to be hailed once as a gentlemen’s game. Just pause for a moment’s reflection on what might have happened if Kohli’s team had been at the receiving end in place of New Zealand. It is a reminder that cricket is not just another game, but a lofty ideal of human endeavour that teaches poise, calmness and gentleness even in the face of defeat.

TAQ hosts Sports Carnival 2019

amil Association of Queensland (TAQ) organised Sports Carnival 2019 on July 6 at Centenary State High School in Jindalee. It was an open-to-all event where people of all ages participated and got the unique opportunity to play various traditional sports like manacala - pallanguzhi, which is widely played by Aboriginal people or the traditional land owners of Australia and the Indian community's Tamil ancestors in India, hopscotch nondi, badminton, volley ball, dice game - dhayam, women's cricket, tin can ball and tug of war. runners were awarded with grand individual trophies, cash awards and team trophies. For the spectators, it was a great sight to witness men, women, youths and kids passionately participating in several sporting events together. The weather on the day wasn’t favourable and it was raining heavily, so the women’s cricket event, which was supposed to happen outdoors, had to take place indoor. But this didn’t lower the spirit of any of the participants in the sport, and they made their best efforts to showcase their talents and sportsmanship, resulting in the ultimate success of the event.
