Assamese community celebrates Rongali Bihu

The Assamese community in Melbourne recently came together with colour, music, and tradition to celebrate Rongali Bihu—the Assamese New Year—at a festive gathering organised by the Assam Association of Melbourne.


The event, graced by the presence of the Consul General of India, Melbourne Dr Sushil Kumar highlighted the richness of Assamese culture through traditional dances, songs, and culinary delights. Rongali Bihu, also known as Bohag Bihu, marks a time of renewal, harvest, and cultural pride.


In his address, the Consul General praised the community’s efforts in preserving and sharing their heritage, noting that such celebrations play a vital role in strengthening the cultural bridge between India and Australia.
The joyous occasion brought together people from diverse backgrounds, underlining the unifying spirit of Bihu and its growing presence in Australia's multicultural tapestry.
