High Commissioner Gopal Baglay and Consul General Dr. Sushil Kumar recently visited Sri Durga Temple in Melbourne to offer prayers on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivratri. They also took the opportunity to interact with devotees and members of the temple management committee, marking the significance of the festival within the Indian community in Australia.

Maha Shivratri, one of the most revered Hindu festivals, is celebrated in honour of Lord Shiva, symbolizing the victory of light over darkness. Observed with fasting, prayers, and nightlong vigils, the festival signifies spiritual awakening, selfdiscipline, and devotion. Many believe it to be the divine wedding night of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, while others see it as the night when Shiva performed the cosmic dance of creation and destruction.

The visit by Indian envoys to the temple reflected the deeprooted cultural traditions of the Indian diaspora in Australia and highlighted the importance of community gatherings in preserving heritage and faith abroad.
