Industry alliance creating biomanufacturing workforce for the future Seven of the state’s key biomanufacturing organisations are combining forces to help boost the sector in Queensland, saying the expansion offers enormous potential for skilled jobs growth.

Having skilled workers in Queensland is essential to attract thriving biotechnology industries with evolving technology needs, and the BioManufacturing Alliance (BMA), coordinated by Life Sciences Queensland, brings the sector together to achieve that.

The Advanced Cell Therapy Manufacturing Initiative (ACTMI) at The University of Queensland is one of the research organisations working with the BMA to ensure students graduate with the skillsets needed by industry.

UQ Vice-Chancellor Professor Deborah Terry said the collaboration opportunities provided through the BMA were invaluable.

“ACTMI has engaged with the BMA to understand where the skills gaps are in the workforce and through that alliance is seeking to address these gaps by providing courses, training opportunities, and upskilling our students to address that need,” Professor Terry said.

The need to increase the pool of a skilled biomanufacturing workforce is one of the challenges identified in the state government’s Queensland Biomedical 10 Year Roadmap and Action Plan.

Professor Frank Gannon, special advisor to Springfield City Group and former head of QIMR Berghofer Medical Research Institute, is optimistic that Queensland’s growing reputation as a collaborative environment was helping attract investments that would create and retain thousands of jobs.

Professor Gannon predicted businesses moving into BioPark Australia at Springfield, close to Brisbane, would create 1200 highquality jobs in the next five years.

“Many of the businesses would address sovereign manufacturing needs, such as providing the supply chain for RNA vaccines from Canadian offshoot company Southern RNA, or specialised blood proteins from the planned Aegros fractionation facility,” Professor Gannon said.

“About 20% of the jobs will be for PhD candidates, another 30% will be for those who already have their PhDs and then, importantly, the rest of the jobs will go to technicians with specialist skills,” he said.

Australian tax system not fit for Australia’s quarterly inflation rises to 1.2% aging population: Experts Canberra, Oct 27 (IANS) Australia's tax system is inadequate to properly fund government responsibilities, experts warned on Friday.

In a speech to Canberra-based think tank the Australia Institute's Revenue Summit at Parliament House on Friday, former Department of Finance head Michael Keating called for a fullscale public review of the funding needed for the adequate provision of government services, reports Xinhua news agency.

Keating, who served as secretary of the department between 1986 and 1991, told the summit that by his estimation Australia's structural budget deficit, which

occurs when public spending exceeds government revenues, would surpass 3 per cent of gross domestic product (GDP) within a decade. He said spending cuts are unlikely to remedy the problem, instead advocating for new taxes that "improve efficiency" including congestion charges and a tax on greenhouse gas emissions. The summit coincided with the release of a report from the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) calling for Australia's federal government to raise and broaden its consumption tax -the general sales tax (GST).

Anti-anxiety drug may help boost brain cancer survival chances Sydney, Oct 26 (IANS) A decadesold anti-anxiety drug can help improve the effectiveness of chemo-radiotherapy towards glioblastoma (GBM) -- the most common and lethal brain cancer.

Brain cancers kill more children and adults under 40 than any other cancer. They are resistant to therapies that kill cancer elsewhere in the body.

The study, published in the journal Science Advances, found cerebrospinal fluid -- the clear colourless liquid that protects the brain -- reduces current treatment efficacy in brain cancer. It also may be a factor that makes brain cancers resistant to treatment, said researchers from Flinders University in Australia.

The study team tested the effect of the precious resource of human cerebrospinal fluid on the growth

of tumour cells collected from 25 local patients with glioblastoma.

Among their findings, the tumour cells quickly changed their identity and became more resistant to radiation and the drug temozolomide, which are mainstays of glioblastoma therapy.

"Glioblastoma kills so many people who are otherwise fit, healthy and young, within months. This is a horrible disease, and the treatments available are just not effective enough despite serious side effects,” said Cedric Bardy, Associate Professor at Flinders.

"This study helps us understand the limitations of the current chemotherapies and provides new hope for repurposing a class of drugs that could be added to the standard of care. We are working hard now to try this on

patients in a clinical trial."

Investigating the molecular basis for these changes, the team found glioblastoma cells exposed to cerebrospinal fluid were more resistant to ferroptosis -- a form of therapy-induced cell death.

Importantly, they showed that trifluoperazine, an anti-anxiety drug used since the 1950s, could re-sensitise glioblastoma cells to both therapies.

Canberra, Oct 25 (IANS) The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on Wednesday revealed that inflation hit 1.2 per cent between the start of July and end of September, marking an increase from the 0.8 per cent rise in prices in the previous quarter.

The report released by the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW) on Wednesday revealed that A$241.3 billion was spent on health goods and services nationally in the 12 months to the end of June 2022, the equivalent of A$9,365 per person, reports Xinhua news agency.

After adjusting for inflation, health spending grew 6 per cent from 2020-21 to 2021-22 compared to an average annual increase of 3.4 per cent in the previous decade, the report said.

Governments accounted for 72.9 per cent of spending on health care, with A$105.8 billion coming from the federal government and a combined bill of A$70.2 billion from state and territory governments.

Federal government health care funding grew 8.6 per cent from 2020-21 to 2021-22, more than double the long-term average of 3.5 per cent.

The report attributed the spike to the coronavirus pandemic.

Gaza, Oct 26 (IANS) Three family members of Wael Al-Dahdouh, Al Jazeera Arabic's bureau chief in Gaza, were killed amid the raging conflict in the Hamas-controlled enclave, Palestinian security and medical sources said.

On Wednesday, an Israeli raid on two houses in the Nuseirat refugee camp killed several people, including the wife, son, and daughter of Al-Dahdouh, the medical sources claimed.

"Despite being forced to relocate to the southern part of the Gaza Strip in search of safety, the AlDahdouh family was targeted," Xinhua news agency quoted a statement released by the Hamas-run Ministry of Interior in Gaza as saying.

The relocation followed Israel's evacuation call ordering some 1 million people to move to the southern part of the besieged enclave on October 13.

Footage on Al Jazeera English news channel shows Al-Dahdouh entering a hospital to see his slain family members.

In a statement released on social platform X, Al Jazeera confirmed the death of Al-Dahdouh's

family members and extended condolence.

"The Al Jazeera Media Network extends its sincere condolences and sympathy to our colleague Weal Al-Dahdouh on the loss of his family in an Israeli airstrike," the statement said.

"Al Jazeera is deeply concerned about the safety and well-being of our colleagues in Gaza and hold the Israeli authorities responsible for their security," it added.

According to the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, 24 journalists have been killed, some with their families, and dozens more have been wounded since the beginning of the Israeli airstrikes on the Gaza Strip.

In the current World Cup in India, surprises have come in large quantities. The first major surprise was when the Netherlands defeated the mighty South Africa. How do you explain that? Big names playing for South Africa who have played like lions against stronger opposition, wilted under pressure created by some impeccable pace and spin bowling from the Netherlands.

Not many experts would have given even a whiff of a chance to the Netherlands that they would get the better of the South Africans so easily. The South African side did not look their real self as they played in a manner that showed a lack of confidence. Some of the shots played by their batters were tentative, and the Netherlands totally dominated the proceedings.

But the performance of world champion England has surprised many experts of the game. How can a champion side, which was playing brilliant cricket till now, suddenly start playing shabbily? The English side has outstanding match winners in Ben Stokes, Joe Root, Bairstow and Butler. They have depth in their batting, and have a formidable bowling attack.

Despite being a champion side that it is, the English side played a sort of cricket you won’t normally associate with a team that has no dearth of talent. Yet the team played without the spark it needed so much. It is not as if the players were not familiar with the conditions in India. Many of their top players play for one or the other IPL side. Some of the players may have been playing in India for the first time. Even so, international players are trained to acclimatize themselves to conditions abroad. This is what makes them professional cricketers. The downfall of the English side, which has been sliding down on the points table for this World Cup, has been wrought by some of the irresponsible shots they have chosen to play, unwittingly perhaps. When the conditions required the team to play cautiously, the English side chose to play aggressively and lost wickets in regular intervals unnecessarily. One would expect players of the caliber of Joe Root, Ben Stokes, Bairstow and Butler to play a good hand when the situation demanded them to do so. They are too good to miss out for long.

Though India has desisted from openly taking sides of either Israel or Palestine, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first reaction to the gruesome Hamas attack on Israel saying that India stands with Israel has been perceived as India’s pro-Israel stance. But the more recent developments have put to rest any doubts about which way India seeks to align.

The fact that India abstained from voting on a UN General Assembly (UNGA) resolution backing the Palestine cause, makes the point amply clear that India is no longer averse to lending support to Israel, albeit indirectly.

While India has made its stance clear politically, India has sent humanitarian aid to the people of Palestine. India’s official stance should not be misinterpreted as against the people of Palestine.

India continues to engage with the Palestinian leadership, but its self interest dictates that it can no longer ignore Israel as an important ally that has always supported and assisted India in times of crisis.

In the current geopolitical scenario, where India is surrounded by foes on all sides, having friendly relations with Israel is imperative. Pakistan and China have been a perennial threat to India. With China engaging with many South Asian countries, especially Nepal and Bhutan, India feels threatened as these small countries can act against India in the event of a conflict escalating to a fullfledged war. India’s opposition to the recent UNGA resolution arises because it (UNGA) failed to condemn Hamas for its terrorist attack and the Assembly rejected an amendment supported by India that would have named the terror group. India’s stance has always been against acts of terror and terror groups anywhere in

the world. This is understandable considering the fact that India has had to deal with terrorism from across the border for years. The October 7 attack by Hamas on Israel calls for harshest criticism of the terror group, and there is no logic whatsoever not to condemn its abominable acts of terror. Israel’s counter-offensive against the terror group is but natural and understandable, though the loss of innocent civilian lives, be they Palestinians or Israelis, is against the best interest of humanity.

In this context, India's Deputy Permanent Representative Yojna Patel said after the vote that the terror attacks in Israel on October 7 were shocking and deserved condemnation. She stated that the world should not be persuaded to justify terror acts, and leaving aside differences, it should adopt a zero tolerance approach to terrorists. This statement from the Indian side should make it clear that India condemns terrorism and terror attacks, irrespective of the place it emanates from. Therefore, any backing of the Palestine cause, at a time when a terror group like Hamas is purportedly trying to show that it alone represents Palestine and its cause, will amount to giving legitimacy to a terror group. There is also a need to be aware of the fact that Hamas unleashed an orgy of rapes and murders, and are still holding several Israelis as hostages.

The resolution asked the member countries to vote for a truce in the Israel-Hamas conflict and provision of assistance to the people of Gaza. The resolution passed with 120 votes, while there were 14 votes against it and 45 abstentions, giving it a two-thirds majority of those present and voting. India, however, backed the amendment to the resolution moved by Canada that named Hamas and condemned its October 7 attack. But it failed to pass, getting only 88 votes, while there were 54 votes against it, with 23 abstentions.

Significantly, the Assembly's resolution is only symbolic in nature, and it does not have the power to enforce it. Therefore not much should be read into how the UNGA resolution went. Historically, India has always voted in favour of any resolution that favoured the Palestine cause, even if it meant ignoring the Israeli position. But keeping in view the changing geopolitical situation, it is apt that India should take the stance that serves its interest. Since Independence, India’s position to back only the Palestinian cause was in keeping with the notion that it will be looked upon favourably by Indian Muslims. This perspective is erroneous given the fact that Indian Muslims realize that they are a part of the Indian nation, and what is in the interest of India as a nation is also in their interest. The Palestine issue has been deliberately politicized internationally, and it is being done in India domestically as well. The Israel-Palestine conflict should not affect the psyche of Muslims in India. This is because a nation is built with the contribution of one and all, including that of the Muslims.

Muslims in India are an integral part of India as a nation, which has nothing to do with India’s stance globally. If India stands with Israel, it is to fulfill its own interest. The Arab countries have always sided with and supported Pakistan during India-Pakistan wars. Israel, on the other hand, had stood with India, and even supported it when it was in a crisis situation. Israeli assistance has strengthened India’s intelligence agency R&AW. India needs the support and assistance of Israel in a world where it is difficult to discern between a friend and a foe.

India was projected as the fastest-growing economy with the potential to become one of the three largest economies of the world and the ‘ease of doing business’ was convincingly explained to lay the ground for further foreign investments in India. India’s potential across the spectrum - from Space to Sports - was well demonstrated.

New Delhi, Oct 22 (IANS) The tremendous global outreach achieved by India in the run-up to G20 under its Presidency, consolidation of India’s position in regional groupings, acknowledgement of India’s leadership of the Global South, further strengthening of bilateral and multilateral bonds that served to counter India’s adversaries and above all the direct exposure of the world to India’s inner strengths of indigenous skills, technological potential and civilisational roots, all these should be listed as the extraordinary and lasting advantages gained by India in the wake of this highly successful world event hosted by the country under the direct guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

This was a G20 Summit ‘with a difference’ setting off positive geopolitical trends both for global security and the world economy.

Nearly 200 conferences of G20 Sherpas, Ministers of participating countries and specialists, held in India and outside, generated information, graphical data and opportunities for cooperation that would be now evaluated producing a rare gift of knowledge for the participating countries. This is perhaps the biggest legacy of G20’s Delhi Summit.

A singular achievement of the Summit was the release of a joint statement - Delhi Declaration - representing a consensus that had eluded it in the past because of differences on geopolitical developments chiefly the Ukraine-Russia military conflict, issues of environment and matters relating to equity for the Global South.

India has firmed up its position as a world power whose counsel on issues of war and peace would be respected and whose voice of sanity turned the esoteric Indian concept of ‘one world one family’ into a reality.

In fact what turned out to be an epoch-making feature of the Delhi Summit was that G20, the most powerful economic group, was made aware of the need to enlarge its ambit and embrace a human-centric approach to the world at large.

The ninth P20 meet of the Parliament Speakers held on October 13-14 in Delhi as a concluding part of the G20 put a seal of finality on the decision of the democratic countries to work together to advance the agenda of the Delhi Summit.

Inaugurating this meeting, Prime Minister Modi described India as the mother of democracy while Speaker Om Birla emphasised the importance of Parliamentary contribution to G20 processes.

The Delhi Declaration of G20 will go down in history as the first expression of unanimity by member countries on a wide variety of global issues beyond the traditional matters of economy and business, such as climate change, the threat of terrorism and an equitable order addressing the disparity between the North and the South.

Climate change has been the subject of acrimonious debates rather than decisions for ‘action’.

India left its imprint at the G20 summit with Prime Minister Modi advancing the concept of Mission LiFE (Lifestyle For Environment) as a part of the larger vision of ‘One earth, one family, one future’.

By calling upon every individual not just countries and institutions - to become a beacon of hope for humanity by consciously adopting a helpful approach to the environment, supporting a switch over to renewable energy and generally upholding the idea of a lifestyle that was in sync with inclusivity and equality, the Delhi Declaration was breaking new grounds.

Another feature of this G20 summit was the consensus it reached on the need to create a Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), define its principles and framework and make it an instrument of the new vision for global prosperity. Prime Minister Modi with his impassioned devotion to the cause of Digital India, drove this initiative and secured the total backing of the participants.

A related idea of encouraging ‘start-ups’ was brought to the high table and India’s example as a lead player in that was successfully put forth, to

It is remarkable how the G20 Presidency has put India on the global map in a manner that its voice of wisdom has been acknowledged across the world.

India’s security and economic interests have been well served at the Delhi Summit.

The political will of the Modi regime has put the stamp of consistency and strategic soundness on India’s foreign policy that basically favoured bilateral and multilateral friendships which were mutually beneficial and were not in conflict with the cause of global peace and advancement of the world economy.

In the context of the UkraineRussia military confrontation, India held its ground while calling for a peaceful resolution through talks without naming either side in that combat and highlighting in the Delhi Declaration the pronouncement of Prime Minister Modi that ‘this is not an era of war’.

No voice of dissent was raised by the US, Russia and China at the summit and India’s policy of pushing the Indo-US relationship to a new height while maintaining the country’s deep bonds with Russia was proceeding unhindered.

India maintained its vocal advocacy of UN reforms on the grounds that the world body had to be a representative one in today’s global order and had to broad base its decision-making process.

It appears that voices favouring India’s inclusion as a permanent member of the UN Security Council are getting stronger every day as there is a realisation that this was needed to maintain the very credibility of the UN body as the arbiter of matters affecting global order and peace.

the Delhi Declaration of the G20 Summit gave equal importance to issues of world security and global economic development this was because India had chosen to be upfront about expressing concerns at all world forums that affected India’s security and posed a danger to the world at large, as well.

At the G20 summit, India gave a clear message to China and Pakistan that it was well-prepared to deal with them both and effectively counter their joint mischief against this country.

After the G20 summit, India is better prepared to deal with an aggressive China on the borders and elsewhere and is in a position to inflict costs on Pakistan for its cross-border misadventures.

For all of that Prime Minister is rightly relying on capacity building by India on the ‘mantra’ of self-dependence.

The gains of G20 have been unprecedented in terms of the cultural richness, ‘soft power’ potential and new avenues of exports of India’s enormous handicrafts and local products, to which the world was given access during the extensive get-togethers and domestic ‘touring’ organised for the visiting dignitaries.

G20 events were held in 60 cities across 28 states and 8 Union Territories. Foreign guests literally emerged in the rich Indian culture - the gifts presented to them ranged from Pashmina shawls and Khadi stoles to Indian and Rosewood handcrafts and Kannauj perfumes. They all had once in a lifetime experience on this visit to India. This will impact favourably on India’s economic prospects and diplomatic advancement.

The larger gain from G20 is that by hosting the summit on such a grand scale of hospitality, providing for bilateral meetings with most visiting heads and presenting India as the flag bearer of the Global South and as a champion of humanitarian approach to economic development, India’s Presidency has converted this group of developed countries into a world forum where an unbiased view could be upheld on geopolitical developments, issues of global economy with particular reference to the lot of the developing countries and on crucial dimensions of ‘one earth one family’ like climate change, disaster management and gender equality.

India’s rise at the G20 summit as a world power was matched by its ascendancy in the region.

In the run-up to the Delhi summit, Prime Minister Modi emerged as the anchor of the ASEAN-India summit in Indonesia where he presented a framework of cooperation between India and ASEAN on issues such as connectivity, digital transformation, trade and economic partnership, collective fight against terrorism and terror funding and cyber disinformation.

SPECIAL FEATURES Moreover, India defined the ASEAN stand on the IndoPacific and Prime Minister Modi emphasised that the code of conduct for the South China Sea should be effective and should take into account the interests of countries not involved in it.

Indian Prime Minister has shown an exceptional ability to go into the security concerns of India and actively lead strategic, diplomatic and political initiatives to do what was best for this country.

The role of India’s National Security Advisor in all of this stands out when one looks back on what his predecessors did in moments of national crisis like 26/11 and the radical onslaught of Pak ISI in Kashmir in the early Nineties.

Prime Minister Modi’s justification of friendship with the US is based not on any compulsion of humouring the latter as a superpower but on a conviction that India and the US as the two largest democracies with the proven credentials of their electoral systems, must lead the democratic world against the dictatorial regimes - amongst them the Marxist China and the ‘fundamentalist’ Pakistan - for the larger good of the world.

India under the Modi regime has been able to achieve convergence of thought with countries like the US, the UK, Japan, Australia and even Saudi Arabia. The announcement of the IndiaMiddle East-Europe economic corridor in the presence of representatives of the US, France, Germany, EU, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Turkey, proved this.

Prime Minister Modi highlighted the need for respecting the sovereignty of all nations implicitly conveying his disapproval of the CPEC under China’s Belt& Road Initiative(BRI) that cut through POK in the face of strong protests from India. India-Middle East-Europe economic corridor is also meant to curb the rise of Islamic Radicals with their faith-based terrorism, who were evidently receiving support from the SinoPak axis.

The recent large terrorist attack of Hamas on Israel is the outcome, among other things relating to the history of the Israel-Palestine conflict, of a constant spread of radicalisation in the Muslim world. The G20 Presidency has helped India to isolate its adversaries and widen the area of support for its strategy of dealing with them.

New Delhi, Oct 23 (IANS) About 89 per cent of Indian CEOs are likely to reward employees who try to come to the office, with raises, promotions, and favourable assignments, a new report said on Monday.

Globally, about 87 per cent of CEOs consider implementing the same, according to the global consulting firm KPMG. The report which surveyed more than 1,300 CEOs of the world’s largest businesses, including 125 CEOs from India, said geopolitics and broader political uncertainty are now the greatest risks to business growth.

“CEOs in India are facing challenges and obstacles to growth on multiple fronts -from geopolitical uncertainty and politicisation to increased stakeholder expectations in the ESG space and the adoption of generative AI," said Yezdi Nagporewalla, Chief Executive Officer, KPMG in India.

The level of confidence of Indian CEOs in their own company’s growth prospects has remained mostly unchanged from the past year (71 per cent in 2023 compared to 72 per cent in 2022).

Moreover, the report showed that CEOs in India are prioritising investments in generative AI as a key competitive advantage for the future, with 66 per cent of CEOs considering it as a top investment priority for their organisation.

New York, Oct 28 (IANS) A lawsuit against fashion brand Abercrombie & Fitch -- accusing the firm of funding a sextrafficking operation -- has been filed in New York, the media reported.

The company allowed ex-CEO Mike Jeffries "unfettered access" to resources to support his "criminal enterprise", documents allege.

The lawsuit follows a BBC investigation into allegations Jeffries exploited men at events he hosted while CEO. A brand spokesperson said the company would not be commenting on the case.

A lawyer for Jeffries said he would also not be commenting.

"The courtroom is where we will deal with this matter," Brian H Bieber said in a statement.

The lawsuit also accuses Jeffries and his British partner Matthew Smith of sex trafficking, sexual misconduct and rape, the BBC reported.

The case has been brought under the New York Adult Survivors Act, which allows people to file civil sexual abuse claims that would have otherwise exceeded the statute of limitations.

It is seeking class action status -where one or several people sue on behalf of a much larger group.

"Because of this lawsuit and the brave men that have come forward, Abercrombie will have to answer for its many unacceptable actions and inactions that have destroyed the lives of dozens of young men," said Brad Edwards, a civil lawyer who is now representing some of the alleged victims, the BBC reported.

The lawsuit filed in the Southern District of New York claims that A&F knew, or should have known, it was providing the "financial lifeblood for a sex trafficking organisation" led by Mike Jeffries between at least 1992 and 2014 -while he was CEO of the company, the media reported.

It alleges he used A&F's corporate resources including a jet, transportation, and unlimited amounts of cash to facilitate a sex-trafficking venture, which enabled him to accumulate "new victims at an alarming rate" and he also had access to aspiring models, the BBC reported.

Incentives to fast-track delivery of new homes announced

Brisbane, October 24 (Australia India News Newsdesk) Incentives to fast-track the delivery of new homes are now available, Lord Mayor Adrian Schrinner announced recently.Cr Schrinneron October 24 visited one of the first properties that will benefit from the incentives, a community housing project in Chermside that will deliver 92 new social and affordable homes.“Brisbane is Australia’s fastest growing capital city and this is adding to the pressure on our housing sector from chronic labour shortages and supply chain disruptions,” Cr Schrinner said.

“Our growth is also forecast to continue for many years to come with Brisbane’s population projected to increase by 457,000 to more than 1.7 million by 2046.

We want to make housing more affordable by bringing down the cost of building.Our Housing Supply Action Plan will help tackle the current housing shortage by incentivising private industry and the community sector to kickstart construction sooner.This plan will ensure residents, regardless of whether they are owners, renters or social housing tenants, have opportunities to get into a home sooner,” he said. Cr Schrinner highlighted the fact that 96 per cent of all new residential properties are delivered by the private sector so helping them deliver homes sooner is critical to solving the current housing shortage.

“The Housing Supply Action Plan will incentivise the building industry through reduced infrastructure charges for eligible projects. But the biggest winner will be our community housing providers, who will receive a 100 per cent permanent and ongoing reduction to make it even easier for them to deliver vital social housing.Under this landmark scheme our community housing providers will be able to save $1 million for every 100 homes they deliver,” he further said.

Council’s Housing Supply Action Plan could deliver over $2 million in savings to BHC over the next three developments alone.“For every 100 homes that we deliver, this could mean a saving of over $1 million in infrastructures charges, providing us with the opportunity to channel these valuable funds towards new supply,” Oelkers said. “We support Brisbane City Council’s leadership in assisting providers, like BHC, to deliver more housing outcomes for Brisbane residents in housing need,” Oelkers added.

Highlights of the Council’s infrastructure charge waivers available are: • 75% reduction for studio, one and two-bedroom apartments within inner-city, high-density principal and major centre areas with an existing approval since 1 January 2022 • 75% reduction for studio, one and two-bedroom build-to-rent apartments with an existing approval since 1 January 2022 • 50% reduction for studio, one and two-bedroom apartments within inner-city, high-density principal and major centre areas approved from 1 September 2023 onwards • 50% reduction for studio, one and two-bedroom build-to-rent apartments within inner-city, high-density principal and major centre areas approved from 1 September 2023 onwards • 100% permanent and ongoing reduction for registered community housing providers Speaking about the waivers, Cr Schrinner said the waivers would reduce delivery costs for both the private sector and community housing providers.“By facilitating the building of more homes in the right locations we’re helping create more homes sooner, while cutting down on urban sprawl and traffic congestion,” he said.

“All projects must be completed within four years and with around 3000 fully-approved homes already eligible we hope this initiative will accelerate delivery and put a roof over thousands of heads sooner,” he added.

Deakin University student Sarvjeet Singh wins Victorian Premier’s Award Melbourne, October 27 (Australia India News Newsdesk) Sarvjeet Singh from Deakin University, Geelong has won the coveted Victorian Premier’s Award for International Student of the Year 2023, recently. In 2022, Divyangana Sharma received this award.

About his achievement, Sarvjeet Singh in a LinkedIn post, wrote, “I am deeply honoured and thrilled to share that I have been awarded the Premier’s International

Student of the Year Award. This award is the highest recognition an international student can receive, and I am truly grateful.

This award recognises the student who has been able to make exceptional contributions to the victorian community and have had a positive global impact.

Australia has played a huge role in my transformation while making me realise about my capabilities. I had never thought that I would be able to come this far.”

He further wrote, “From my friends to my family, boss to my colleagues and teachers to my classmates; everyone who I have met has played a huge role in making me who I am today. I would have never been able to achieve this award without all of you. This is a major milestone in my journey, and I would say that this is me just getting started and there is still a lot that I have to do.”

Sarbjeet is a final Year

Undergraduate Civil Engineering student who has interests in construction management and infrastructure industry, backed by knowledge of engineering theories and principles. He began his career as an intern with the Geelong City Council and is now working as an Undergraduate Stormwater Engineer and is helping with flood assessments, He has recently started a project with the City of Greater Geelong to elaborate and understand the

potential of Geelong’s retarding basins for tree plantation and public recreation activities.

Sarbjeet is also a student leader and is currently working on many leadership roles. He is currently serving as a success coach and student ambassador at Deakin University. He is also a student ambassador for Study Geelong.

Bishan Singh Bedi: Audacious, outspoken, controversial but a spinner with a big heart ROTHMANS CUP

Mumbai, Oct 23 (IANS) After an embarrassing defeat to Australia in the Rothmans Cup in New Zealand in 1990, the manager of the Indian cricket team had famously declared to the media: “The entire team should be dumped into the Pacific.” That was Bishan Singh Bedi, never afraid to speak his mind, never one to mince words and always ready to call a spade a spade.

A tough taskmaster, Bedi may not have endeared himself to the various teams that he coached and managed -- from the Delhi Ranji Trophy team to the senior national team, but as a spinner par excellence, he always commanded respect, coaching players like Maninder Singh and Murali Karthik among others.

It was his aura as one of the greatest left-arm spinners the game had seen, which gave Bedi the audacity to be upfront and undiplomatic at times. His words never had the loop and spin that Bedi put in his bowling.

At the core of his heart, Bishan Singh Bedi was always antiestablishment and fought with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) administrators for his teammates and fellow cricketers.

A key member of India's famous spin quartet of the 1970s, left-arm spinner Bishan Singh Bedi passed away on Monday, aged 77. Bedi played 67 Tests for India between 1967 and 1979, taking 266 wickets

It was his aura and abilities as a brilliant spinner and cricketer that on many occasions foreign teams would send their spinners to train under Bedi before unleashing them on the Indian team. Bedi was never economical or frugal in dispensing with his wisdom, whoever sought it, whether an Indian or otherwise.

But his teammates and rivals would also remember Bedi for his big heart as a cricketer, who was always ready to praise a batsman for attacking him and a spinner for his bowling skills. He was a man with a heart of gold.

Moon 40 mn years older than earlier thought, reveal crystals from lunar surface

New Delhi/Hyderabad, Oct 24 (IANS) Space sector start-up Skyroot Aerospace on Tuesday unveiled its indigenously built Vikram-1 rocket.

Space, Science and Technology Minister Jitendra Singh, after unveiling the rocket, also inaugurated 'The MAX-Q Campus', the new headquarters of the start-up at the GMR Aerospace and Industrial Park at Mamidipally in Hyderabad.

Vikram-1 is expected to deliver satellites to low earth orbit early next year. Singh toured the Skyroot headquarters spread

across 60,000 sq ft and billed as the country's largest private rocket development facility under one roof.

Vikram-1 is a multi-stage launch vehicle with a capacity to place around 300 kg payloads in Low Earth Orbit.

It is an all-carbon-fibre-bodied rocket that can place multiple satellites into orbit and features 3D-printed liquid engines.

Planned to be launched in early 2024, Vikram-I will be Skyroot's second rocket, after the successful launch of the Vikram-S rocket on November 18 last year.

Electric cars to increase by almost 10 times by 2030: International Energy Agency

Washington, Oct 23 (IANS) Crystals brought back by Apollo astronauts in 1972 from the lunar surface have revealed that the Moon is 40 million years older than scientists thought.

In a study published in the journal ‘Geochemical Perspectives Letters’, researchers used crystals to help pinpoint the time of the Moon’s formation. Their discovery pushes back the age of the Moon by 40 million years, to at least 4.46 billion years old.

“These crystals are the oldest known solids that formed after the giant impact. And because we know how old these crystals are, they serve as an anchor for the lunar chronology,” said Philipp Heck, the Robert A. Pritzker Curator for Meteoritics and Polar Studies at the Field Museum in the US and a professor at the University of Chicago.

The sample of lunar dust used in the study was brought back by Apollo 17 astronauts in the last crewed mission to the Moon in 1972.

This dust contains tiny crystals that formed billions of years ago.

These crystals are a telltale sign of when the Moon must have formed.

“We were approached by our coauthors, Bidong Zhang and Audrey Bouvier, who needed a nanoscale look at these samples in order to understand them fully,” said the study’s lead author, Jennika Greer, who is now a research associate at the University of Glasgow.

When the Mars-size object hit the Earth and formed the Moon, the energy of the impact melted the rock that eventually became the Moon’s surface.

Since the crystals must have formed after the magma ocean cooled, determining the age of the zircon crystals would reveal the minimum possible age of the Moon.

A previous study by co-author Zhang suggested this age, but the most recent study marks the first use of an analytical method called atom probe tomography which “nailed down” the age of this oldest known lunar crystal.

This atom-by-atom analysis, conducted using instruments at Northwestern University, showed how many of the atoms inside the zircon crystals had undergone radioactive decay.

The proportion of lead isotopes that the researchers found indicated that the sample was about 4.46 billion years old.

Therefore, the Moon has to be at least that old.

“It’s amazing being able to have proof that the rock you’re holding is the oldest bit of the Moon we’ve found so far. It’s an anchor point for so many questions about the Earth. When you know how old something is, you can better understand what has happened to it in its history,” Greer noted.

“It’s important to know when the Moon formed,” added Heck, “because the Moon is an important partner in our planetary system. It stabilises the Earth’s rotational axis, it’s the reason there are 24 hours in a day, it’s the reason we have tides”.

“Without the Moon, life on Earth would look different. It’s a part of our natural system that we want to better understand, and our study provides a tiny puzzle piece in that whole picture,” the authors noted.

New Delhi, Oct 24 (IANS) The energy world is set to change significantly by 2030, based on the current policy settings, which includes almost 10 times as many electric cars on the road worldwide, the International Energy Agency (IEA) said on Tuesday.

According to the IEA's new 'World Energy Outlook 2023', the share of renewables in the global electricity mix would reach 50 per cent by 2030 from the current 30 per cent.

"The transition to clean energy is happening worldwide and it's unstoppable. It's not a question of 'if', it’s just a matter of ‘how soon’ -- and the sooner the better for all of us,” said IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol.

The investment in new offshore wind projects would go up by three times by 2030 in new coaland gas-fired power plants, the report mentioned.

Renewables are set to contribute 80 per cent to new powergeneration capacity by 2030 under current policy settings, with solar power alone accounting for more than half of

this expansion, according to the report.

“If countries deliver on their national energy and climate pledges on time and in full, clean energy progress would move even faster. However, even stronger measures would still be needed to keep alive the goal of limiting global warming to 1.5 degree Celsius,” the IEA report mentioned.

The combination of growing momentum behind clean energy technologies and structural economic shifts around the world has major implications for fossil fuels, with peaks in global demand for coal, oil and natural gas all visible this decade.

In this scenario, the share of fossil fuels in global energy supply, which has been stuck for decades at around 80 per cent, declines to 73 per cent by 2030, with global energy-related carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions peaking by 2025, the report mentioned.

“Every country needs to find its own pathway, but international cooperation is crucial for accelerating clean energy transitions,” Dr Birol said.

New York, Oct 24 (IANS) Nutritional experts have for years debated on the primary culprit for increasing obesity. While diets that are high in fat and carbohydrates contribute to the condition, it turns out, fructose may be one true driver of obesity, according to a study.

According to Richard Johnson, from University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus, the primary problem in obesity is fructose -- which is present in table sugar and high fructose corn syrup.

Fructose can also be made in the body from carbohydrates (particularly glucose).

When fructose is metabolised, it lowers the active energy in the body (known as ATP, or adenosine triphosphate) which causes hunger and food intake.

What Johnson calls the “fructose survival hypothesis” brings together most of the dietary hypotheses of obesity, including

Heated yoga sessions for just once a week may reduce depression

New York, Oct 23 (IANS) Heated yoga sessions for just once a week may help reduce depression, indicating that heated yoga could be a viable treatment option for patients suffering from moderate-to-severe depressive symptoms, new research has claimed.

In a randomised controlled clinical trial of adults with moderate-to-severe depression, led by investigators at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), depressive symptoms were reduced even in participants who received only half of the prescribed yoga "dose", suggesting that heated yoga sessions just once a week could be beneficial.

In the eight-week trial, 80 participants were randomised into two groups: one that received 90-minute sessions of Bikram yoga practiced in a 40.5 degree celsius room and a second group that was placed on a waitlist (waitlist participants completed the yoga intervention after their waitlist period).

A total of 33 participants in the yoga group and 32 in the waitlist group were included in the analysis.

Participants in the intervention group were prescribed at least two yoga classes per week, but overall, they attended an average of 10.3 classes over eight weeks.

After eight weeks, yoga participants had a significantly greater reduction in depressive symptoms than waitlisted participants, as assessed through what's known as the clinicianrated Inventory of Depressive Symptomatology (IDS-CR) scale.

f you search for any skincare advice, there’s a high chance you’ll stumble upon an ingredient called hyaluronic acid. From serums to moisturizers, to aesthetic procedures, hyaluronic acid has become the magic potion in today’s skincare routines.

But what is hyaluronic acid?

If you’re suffering from rough and dull skin, with an increase in fine lines and overly visible pores, it means your skin needs water. Lack of hydration is often the underlying cause behind secondary issues like premature aging and acne, too. And this is where hyaluronic acid steps in. It is the key to smooth, flawless, and hydrated skin.

Hyaluronic acid is naturally present in the human body – it acts as a magnet, drawing in and retaining moisture in a binding process that instantly improves skin’s hydration levels. Each molecule can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water. Drying your face with a towel Many of us go for a towel to dry our faces as soon as we finish washing them. You must stop doing this immediately since dirty towels can harbour bacteria and exacerbate acne on your face and back if not washed daily.

Dr. Jatin instead advised washing your towels frequently or air drying your face and applying skincare while it was still moist.

However, avoid doing so while utilising active ingredients such as salicylic acid, retinol, niacinamide, and vitamin C. Applying skin care products in the wrong order If you apply moisturisers, serums, and retinol to your face at random, it's likely that they

won't work as well as they should.

He cautioned that doing so could reintroduce bacteria into your cream. He recommends washing your hands thoroughly before dipping them into your products or using a scoop or spatula that you wash and dry after each use.

ollywood actor Shahid Kapoor, who is known for films like ‘Kabir Singh’, ‘Jab We Met’, ‘Haider’, ‘Udta Punjab’ and others, has shared his look from his upcoming film titled ‘Deva’.

In the film, Shahid shares the screen with actress Pooja Hegde, who was most recently seen in the Salman Khan-starrer ‘Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan’.

On Tuesday, Shahid took to Instagram to share his character’s look from ‘Deva’. In the picture, Shahid steals the show as he dons a crisp white shirt, paired with khaki pants. He sports short hair and a bearded face, and accessorises his look with a pair of black sunglasses. He also holds a gun with the arms resting on his thigh as he gives an intense look while looking up.

ilmmaker Karan Johar has expressed his love and fondness for superstar Shah Rukh Khan, sharing how the latter was the first person, who didn't made him feel lesser in terms of sexuality.

In a podcast 'We Are Yuvaa', KJo has opened up on his childhood trauma, sexuality and his confidant Shah Rukh Khan.

KJo said: "I think the first person that made me feel that I was okay was Shah Rukh Khan. He has been and brought up in a very progressive environment, he comes from theatre, he has worked with all kinds of people."

"My parents won't be able to understand things, I felt the feminine side I had that was coming out so strongly, was only met with laughter or being made fun of," shared KJo.

Karan said: "When I grew older, people around me were quiet, there were chitter chatter around, maybe the way I walked, spoke etc. SRK was the first man who didn't made me feel lesser. He made me feel like an equal. He accepted what in those days be like considered being a pansy, feminine, or walking funny. He was just so cool about everything."

"He had a lot of open chats with me. Even when I had to say the biggest thing about my personality and sexuality, I spoke to him first. Because I felt like he would be that one influence and sense of support. I feel like Indian cinema has painted the most flawed interpretations of what a man should be," said the 51-yearold director.

"The moment I wear that black suit it's like my armour, the moment I get into fashion that's when I found my voice. I realised I want to wear what I want to, no matter what people say," he said.

Karan added: "The people on social media comment on my clothing, saying I am cheap copy of Ranveer Singh, they call me 'GayJo'. But all that doesn't bother me. Now, I have developed a thick skin for that."

irector M.G Srinivas, professionally known as Srini, has just released his grand heistaction-thriller film 'Ghost' on the big screen and it has gotten much appreciation.

The power-packed film which boasts a star studded cast consisting of Shivarajkumar, Anupam Kher, Jayaram, Prashant Narayan and Archana Jois is part of a three-part movie trilogy called the ‘Birbal’ trilogy, which is the lead up to an entire cinematic universe.

Speaking exclusively to IANS, director-actor Srini spoke about both ‘Ghost’, the ‘Birbal’ trilogy as well as elaborated on why Bollywood has begun to adapt Southern Indian elements into their films.

Talking about how he came up with the story for ‘Ghost’, he said: “ ‘Ghost’ actually is based on a real incident. There was an incident that happened back in Chennai regarding a CBI raid, it was in the papers. So I remember studying it and it quite fascinated me. So one thing led to another, and as I was forming my story there was a spark which led me to make the film, adding in action and all the standard elements. So it became a heist-action-thriller.”

Detailing his experience of working with the veteran Kannada actor Shivarajkumar, Srini said: “Oh it was a great experience. I have known him for many years and have worked with him before.

Describing how his ‘Birbal’ trilogy came to be, he said: “I had formulated the idea a while back.

So it was already planned from my side, it wasn’t just a spur-ofthe-moment decision to make it into a trilogy. I mean true, there were many changes in the end product, but I always wanted to make it a trilogy. Action, crime, thriller, heist, maybe more. The Birbal’ trilogy is something I had planned on for a while.”

The director went on to further explain his desire for experimenting with heist, as well as explore other genres.

Detailing this, he said: “Yes, I absolutely plan to explore the heist genre further. I mean we have ‘Ghost’ here, and before that there is ‘Birbal’ which is a crimethriller. So it all forms a pattern.

“I never want to remain static, there is always room to grow and experiment further. Whether your experimentation succeeds or not is something else, but if I were to keep doing just one genre and even if it became like a megablockbuster thing, I wouldn’t do it," he added.

Srini went on to speak of the traction that Southern India cinema has gotten in the Hindi belt for the last few years, and how Bollywood is now changing its own style because of it.

He said: “Firstly, it all has to do with the screens. Early on screens were available in maybe like a few hundreds, maybe thousand. Most of them would be taken by Hindi cinema, and the regional films would have little to no exposure in the North.

Srini continued, "There was no social media at that time and the internet at that time wasn’t what it is today. Things changed as the screenings increased. Certain regional films would become blockbusters when they went to the North, and then via word of mouth they would be aired on television. People would watch dubbed versions on TV which gave the regional scene more mainstream exposure. And now, we have OTT where everything is available to watch.”
