ctober was the busiest month for Indian events in Queensland.

Diwali was celebrated by communities across Queensland. The other major events - IABCA awards - took place in Brisbane for the first time, FICQ Diwali celebration, Premier reception, Mosaic festival, Red Carpet Fashion show, Power of

Peace Festival and the Indian Festival at Townsville.

The other event which touched everyone’s hearts was Manmeet Alisher’s death anniversary wherein Brisbane City council arranged for a memorial to be unveiled during a small ceremony at Luxworth Place Park in Moorooka.

As a part of Power of Peace festival, the Forum over dinner was organized

by Gandhi Salt March Limited and included esteemed personalities like ABC presenter Maxine McKew and Dr. Ela Gandhi, granddaughter of Mahatma Gandhi.

For the first time the Confluence festival was extended across seven major Australian cities including Brisbane, Bundaberg and Townsville and featured the world renowned Kutle Khan Rajasthani band and Ishara Puppet Theatre.

Queensland Premier calls snap election

Quyeensland Premier Anastacia Palaszczuk hosting members of the Indian Community at parliament just prior to announcing the election. however, with Anastacia Palaszczuk having promised $134-million to boost tourism in Cairns in an attempt to win vital seats in the area.

The Queensland Greens have promised to reduce the cost of public transport in South East Queensland to a flat $1 per trip and say that this will cost taxpayers $216-million taking into account an expected 15% increase in public transport usage resulting from the fare cuts.

An independent candidate to watch in the election will be child protection advocate Hetty Johnston AM who was Queensland Australian of the Year in 2015 and who will be contesting the seat of Macalister.

Of interest to the Queensland

Indian community is the contest in Inala where underdog Navdeep Singh goes up against Anastacia Palaszczuk who has held the seat since 2006.

This this will be an historic election for Queensland in that it sees a return to compulsory full preference voting. The Electoral Commission Queensland has warned that votes may not be counted if all boxes on ballot papers are not filled in.

The number of seats in the state parliament will increase to 93 and the members will be elected for a fixed period of four years. The Queensland Premier loses the right to call surprise selections as Ms Palaszczuk did recently.

ueensland voters will once again be heading to the polls after Premier Anastacia Palaszczuk called a snap election to take place on November 25, 2017.

At this early stage it seems that neither Labor or the Liberal National Party (LNP) will achieve the necessary 47 seats necessary for an outright majority. It is highly likely that the minor parties will hold the balance of power including Pauline Hanson’s One Nation Party, the Queensland Greens, Katter’s Australian Party, other parties contesting the election and any independents who win seats.

No announcement has so far been made on possible alliances after the election and there has been disagreement in the LNP with the state leader Tim Nichols ruling out any alliance with One Nation but former premier Campbell Newman saying the party will need One Nation support.

The parties are already feverishly wooing voters with a number of promises already made including ones by the LNP to spend $600-million on the duplication of the railway line between Landsborough and Beerburrum and to cut payroll tax for small businesses.

The proposed investment in the Nambour rail line duplication is aimed at trying to win extra votes in the Sunshine Coast electorates where One Nation support is growing. The LNP is not alone in trying to increase its vote in regional areas,

India Australia Business & Community Awards 2017 Winners Announced

O

ver 400 guests in attendance at Brisbane City Hall witnessed history tonight as winners of the fourth annual India Australia Business & Community Awards were announced on the 13th October at the Awards Gala.

The awards platform celebrates the Australia India relationship while honouring success stories of migrant entrepreneurship and community leadership. The evening honored the monumental contributions made by IABCA’s winners and finalists to the Australia India space, and created a platform for key leaders in this space to host a dialogue of transnational significance.

Held together by Master of Ceremonies Lucy Zelic, SBS Football Presenter, the evening officially commenced with a lamp lighting ceremony that honored our esteemed and dignified guests before The Hon. Zed Seselja, Assistant Minister for Social Services and Multicultural Affairs, made the Prime Ministers address on behalf of The Hon. Malcom Turnbull, Prime Minister of Australia.

hen wife and business partner Jess Hogan nominated Roshni Restaurant for the IABCA 2017 Indian Restaurant of the Year Awards, Raj Sharma basically didn't think they had much of a chance. Then at a gala presentation, Roshni Restaurant was announced as the winner at India Australia Business Community Awards - and Raj was stuck for words!

Tell me how it all started here in Australia.

It all started in 2006 after finishing my diploma my diploma in hospitality and half way through degree I started working for well known busy restaurants like mitchelin Star two plates restaurants and ended up working for international and national five start hotel chains like Versace, Conrad treasury, River View hotels, Water Mark hotel in Food and Beverage management to gain some experience.

I had a humble beginning wherein I started by setting up a corn club kiosk at Brisbane Post Office square, later turned to franchising

business and many other ventures before settling in Roshni.

Why Roshni among many possibilities?

Roshni stands for happiness and light, contemporary designed and influenced by ancient Indian traditions. I was determined to make India proud and decided to be part of the community and helping them.

In future I have a vision to enter politics.

How do you balance work and family life?

I have given long, odd hours in hospitality, my wife has joined me with same passion as I have managing books. I believe when the mind is set to compete with top restaurants in the country nothing else matters. My lovely wife Jess Hogan is both my life and business partner and is always there for me as a source of inspiration. Her support made it possible for me to travel to India when my father was ill during busy business period.

What strategies do you have in place to reach and remain on top?

People are an important aspect in business so I always look after my staff. I strongly believe in competition to self rather than compete against yourself. I learn from high class and implement my own ways as per the situation and that has always helped me grow.

What is your advice to the young Indian restaurateurs in Australia?

Be a professional prior to starting business. Do not compromise on quality or quantity. Use fresh local produce. Think about supporting local community. Be open minded.

The 'Images of Truth' Showcase

by Ishara Puppet Theatre commenced with an Official Reception featuring a Forum over Dinner on “Peace, Nonviolence and Inclusiveness: Are Gandhi Values Relevant in 21st Century?” at the Queensland Art Gallery on Saturday 28 October 2017. Commissioned by the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts in 1993, Ishara’s Images of Truth broke the boundaries of conventional puppetry and inspired generations

to provide the governance vehicle specifically to deliver the Power of Peace Festival – a celebration of Global Mahatma Gandhi. Registered with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission (ACNC) as not for profit organization. GSML is established to promote the teaching of Mr Mohandas (Mahatma) Gandhi and raise awareness of those teachings with a specific focus on world peace, humanitarian pursuits and charitable endeavours.

Hundreds of people descended on Roma Street Parkland for the inaugural Power of Peace Festival a wonderland of multiculturalism and a secular and non-secular rejection of hate, fear and intolerance.

Many arrived there by catching a free ‘Peace Train’ ride from Springfield Central Train Station to Roma Street Station. The train arrived at Roma Street around mid-day.

One of India’s foremost and innovative puppeteers, Dadi D. Pudumjee established the Ishara Puppet Theatre Trust in1986, which is now one of the leading platforms for innovative puppet theatre across the world. Ishara uses puppetry as a medium to entertain as well as address various social issues through their performances and workshops.

The Forum over Dinner event entailed a Panel Discussion by distinguished speakers from diverse background including ethnicity, religion and gender from industry and academia in Australia and abroad. The Panel members shared insights, discussion and deliberation on the relevance of peace, nonviolence and inclusiveness to shape up a humanitarian society in the 21st Century.

DIWALI 2017 : FICQ CHARTS PATH TO THE FUTURE

W

ith the Federation of Indian Communities of Indian Communities of Queensland Inc. (FICQ) reaching its twentieth year of existence, it was timely to chart new directions during its annual Diwali celebrations at King George Square. This year FICQ hosted its first Citizenship Ceremony with the full support of the Queensland branch of the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) – a first in Queensland.

Forty candidates from diverse backgrounds and ages, braved the blistering Brisbane summer heat to take their vows, receive their certificates and become part of the great Australian family.

lamp by key dignitaries including Councillor Angela Owen, Chair of the Brisbane City Council, Councillor Peter Cumming, Leader of the Opposition, Brisbane City Council, Councillor for the Gabba Ward Mr Jonathan Sri, Mr Wayne Briscoe, Executive Director, Multicultural Affairs Queensland and Mr Steve Biddle, Executive Director Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP).

Mr Briscoe released the Diwali Souvenir 2017, which has this year featured articles on all the celebrations of all the major Indian communities-Hindu, Sikh, Buddhist, Jain, Muslim, Christians and Parsis as part of spreading the message of unity in diversity.

Councillor Sri demonstrated his keeness to be proactive through negotiating with the Council to provide some large sunshades and relief for some of the participants.

Citizenship ceremony The citizenship ceremony went like a dream, with everything running on time. Mr Palani Thevar, President of FICQ, officially welcomed all the guests. The dignatories who spoke were unanimous in their messages - new migrants were welcome and importance of working together in harmony.

Mr Biddle who was the Presiding Officer, read the Preamble and adiministered the Pledge of Commitment to the conferees. After receiving the citizenship certificates, the conferees echoed the Australian Affirmation and joined in a stirring rendition of the Australian National Anthem. The ceremony concluded with a delicious morning tea comprising of quintessential Australian sweet – lamingtons!,

sandwiches and other savoury and sweet delicacies. Those who wished to top it up went to the many stalls offering delicious Indian snacks and meals.

The afternoon continued with a smorgasbord of cultural items, ably compered by Mr Ali Kadri, spokesperson of Islamic Council of Queensland, Mr Navin Kumar and Mr Raja Rajan. The Hon Grace Grace, MP, Minister for Employment and Industrial Relations, Minister for Racing and Minister for Multicultural Affairs, paid an impromptu afternoon visit. A late afternoon storm, marked by the thunder and lightning typical of Brisbane storms interrupted the proceedings but only briefly.

DIWALI 2017: Reception and official function Dignitaries and guests were greeted by the Damini Women’s Association and then treated to afternoon high tea featuring Gujarati cuisine before being led by the colourful drummers from Kerala to the main stage for the evening’s proceedings, this time compered by the ABC Brisbane journalist Katherine Feeney.

Mr Palani Thevar gave the welcome speech, emphasizing the strategic importance of FICQ and how it had grown from strength to strength through establishing ties with all levels of government, the non-government and private sectors and the different Indian communities. He also thanked all those who had rallied to support the family, friends and community of Manmeet Alishar whose young

life had been cut so tragically short less than a year ago.

The distinguished speakers included Hon Annastacia Palaszczuk MP, Premier of Queensland, His Excellency Dr A.M. Gondane, High Commissioner of India, Mr Trevor Evans, representative of Prime Minister of Australia Hon. Malcolm Turnbull MP, Mr Tim Nicholls MP, Leader of the Opposition, the Hon Graham Quirk, Lord Mayor Brisbane City Council, Ms Terri Butler MP representative for Mr Bill Shorten, Federal Opposition Leader, and Mr Ian Stewart, Queensland Police Commissioner.

All spoke of the importance of ties between Queensland and India and the contributions of Indians. Mr Nikhil Reddy, the FICQ Secretary the delivered vote of thanks.

The speeches were interspersed with a wide range of classical, folk and Bollywood dances which delighted spectators with their dazzling costumes, scintillating music and energy. The evening ended with the Baba’s Band. It was very heartening for the FICQ committee to see that though available seats filled very quickly and there was standing room only, the audience persevered till the very end.

FICQ committee extended their thanks to the Queensland Government and Brisbane City Council for its great support to multicultural activities and also helping to celebrate celebrating Diwali function in the heart of the city by bringing all communities together, all other local governments and councils such as Ipswich, Logan

Noble initiative undertaken by Kannada Sangha Queensland Inc

K

annada Sangha Queensland Inc (KSQ) was pleased to organise a fund raising event at Ganapathi temple, South Meclean by running the temple canteen for a day on Sunday 1st of October 2017.

The community members of Kannada Sangha made generous donation towards the initiative and supported to the fullest extent that greatly facilitated to prepare the delicious food items along with Karnataka special cuisine and delicacies to the wider community of diverse culture that visits the temple.

The community members volunteered in cooking and serving the food to the devotees who come to the temple during the weekends and take the chance to relish delicious food at the canteen.

The volunteers thoroughly enjoyed taking part in the activities involved in running the canteen and shared their experience of having the ambience of wedding ceremony in India. Thaai Tamil School 6th Annual Cultural Day The "Thaai Tamil School (TTS)� is part of the After Hours Ethnic Schools Association (AHES) and holds language classes on Saturday afternoons at three locations in Brisbane; Sunnybank, Springfield and Taigum. The 6th Annual Cultural Event was held on the 14th October, 2017 at Indooroopilly State High School, Indooroopilly.

The purpose of the event is to promote the language skills of our students and the rich culture to the wider community. Gold Coast Hindu Cultural Association Celebrates Navarathri Festival

he Gold Coast Hindu Cultural Association (GCHCA) strives to enhance the cultural engagement and spiritual experience of all Hindus in our diverse community. The association seeks to do this through providing members of the community with a platform to develop, promote and expand initiatives in education, the arts, community services and religious affairs.

The proposed “Hindu Cultural and Education Centre” would be the physical abode of the GCHCA where Hindu cultural activities such as classical literature, music, dance and classical language & spiritual education will be nurtured.

Gold Coast Hindu Cultural association celebrated a pooja for Skanda Sashti on 20th October 2017 evening at Helensvale Community Centre, Gold Coast.

Skanda Sashti is observed on the sixth day of the bright fortnight of the Tamil month of Aippasi (October – November). This day is dedicated to the second son of – Lord

Subramanya, also known ascMurugan, Shanmukha and Velayudhan, who on this day, is believed to have annihilated the mythical demon Taraka. Celebrated in all Shaivite and Subramanya temples in South India, Skanda Sashti commemorates the destruction of evil by the Supreme Being.

Gold Coast Hindu Cultural Association celebrated the Navarathri Festival for the fifth consecutive year in a cultural and colourful way with the wider participation of the community on 23rd September 2016. More than 500 people both Hindus and Non Hindus participated and enjoyed the festival, which was held in the Bicentennial Community Hall in Nerang, Gold Coast. The festival was sponsored by the Gold Coast City Council and other Commercial establishments Krish Indian Cuisine, Coconut Lagoon Restaurant, Spice World & South Coast Radiology.

The festival started at 6pm with Pooja to festival goddess Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswathi by Sri Barataraj and lighting of lamp by invited special guests.

Various Indian dance forms were staged by talented and rising artists. Bharathanatayams, folk dance(Dantiya), Odyssi dance and contemporary dance forms were staged. In addition to dances, various vocal and instrumental music programs from both Carnatic and Hindustani forms were also got staged.

President of GCHCA ,Ms Sothi Kanagasabai addressed the gathering and explained the goals and objectives of GCHCA and achievements to date. Special Guests Cr. Kirstyn Boulton (Division 4, City of Gold Coast) , Cr. Herman Vorster (Division 11, City of Gold Coast) and Hon. Sid Cramp MP (Member for Gaven)also delivered a special Guest speech to the audience. Councilor Bob La Castra (Division 8, Gold Coast City Council also attended the event as a special guest. Dr Sunil Sharma, Vice president of GCHCA delivered the vote of thanks.

The festival ended with delicious dinner and community interaction. Everyone came to the festival cherished the cultural events as well as the food.

Name your favourite sporting hero and why?

Milkha Singh, also known as “The Flying Sikh”. He’s a track and field sprinter and he won India’s first medal at the Olympics for athletics – a real inspiration for Indians, we’re all very proud of him.

He’s also a great motivational speaker, even until now even though he’s in his 80s! He’s still active, and recently a great Bollywood film was made about him called “Run Milkha Run”.

Name one key sporting/personal or professional achievement.

Was captain of my college team in both Table Tennis and Hockey – a real proud moment for me.

Looking forward to being a multicultural community ambassador for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games promoting and supporting the event.

Both India and Australia!

All the Commonwealth countries united as one family. It goes from strength to strength every Games and this year it is at our door step at the Gold Coast. It’s great to see people with family and friends from all over the world in millions supporting and motivating their own home countries and other nations’ athletes.

Music, drumming, loud echoes, vibration in the air: these all create magic moments of togetherness as one – it’s a wonderful feeling.

Red Carpet Functions Creates History Red Carpet Multicultural Fashion Show 2017

hree years in a roll, the multicultural fashion show of Red Carpet Functions continues to bring different communities together and celebrate cultural diversity in Brisbane.

The Founders of Red Carpet Functions Reena Augustine, Alex Ieong & Walter Choo aim to eliminate barriers among diverse groups by organising events that promote multiculturalism as well as inclusivity. They also promote inclusivity, and believe everyone deserves a chance to showcase their talent.

For this year, the show had attracted more than 300 audiences and 200 participants including models, artists and designers from diverse cultural background to showcase their art works and bring business influences at the Princess Theatre of Brisbane.

While “Flight” was the theme of the night, the show brought their audiences aboard to travel around the world and presented the show along their way through different countries and continent.

The fashion parade was delivered with a wide range of performances ranging from Handpan and drumming performances to Vietnamese and Bollywood dancing.

Gold Coast 2018 Queen’s Baton Relay

T

he Gold Coast 2018 Queen’s Baton Relay was launched on Commonwealth Day, 13 March 2017, on the historic forecourt at Buckingham Palace, signaling the official countdown to the start of the Games.

Accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh and Prince Edward The Earl of Wessex, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II heralded the start of the relay by placing her ‘message to the Commonwealth and its athletes’ into the distinctive loop-design Queen’s Baton which then set off on its journey around the globe.

The Baton will travel for 388 days and will make its way through the six Commonwealth regions of Africa, the Americas, the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and Oceania spending time in every nation and territory of the Commonwealth. The Baton will finally land on Australian soil on Christmas eve 24th December 2017 and will then spend 100 days travelling through Australia, finishing its journey at the Opening Ceremony on 4 April 2018, where

the message will be removed from the Baton and read aloud by Her Majesty or a representative.

The Queen’s Baton Relay reached New Delhi on 3rd Oct 2017 for its India leg as it tours the globe ahead of next year’s Commonwealth Games in Australia. In keeping with the QBR’s values of inclusivity and diversity, running relays through eight different cities explored a kaleidoscope of places and people: temples, tombs and towers, mountains, lakes and rivers, women, men and children, athletes, para athletes and politicians. They were all included in the QBR’s six days in India, and were cheered through city streets by throngs of thousands chanting Vande Matram! Long Live the Mother(land).

It’s this energy, the liveliness and public support that helps motivate India’s athletes to greatness. On the QBR’s final day in Delhi it was time to put on show the nation’s sports stars. A dozen Commonwealth Games medalists joined in a sunset relay that took the Baton from the National Stadium to the

iconic India Gate.

From the world’s greatest monument of love, the Taj Mahal, to the foothills of the Himalayas and the Ganges’ holy city of Haridwar, the Queen’s Baton Relay (QBR) has brought out the kindness, spontaneity and exuberance that makes India a one-of-a-kind nation in the Commonwealth.

On 4 April 2018, over 6,600 athletes and team officials from 70 nations and territories will converge on the Gold Coast for an 11-day sporting and cultural event.

It is reported that the 2018 Queen’s Baton Relay is the longest in the history of the Commonwealth Games and is supposed to cover approximately 2,30,000 km in 388 days.

The Gold Coast’s famous beaches and majestic hinterland will provide a stunning backdrop for the biggest sporting even in Australia this decade, the GOLD COAST 2018 Commonwealth Games GC2018.

Manmeet Alisher, also known as Manmeet Sharma, was letting passengers on board at a Moorooka bus stop when a man set him alight on October 28 last year.

Luxworth Place Park in Moorooka was rededicated as "Manmeet's Paradise and Park" during an anniversary ceremony on Saturday 28th October 2017 afternoon.

The Brisbane City Council also arranged for a memorial to be unveiled during a small ceremony with the India-born driver's family.

Bus drivers earlier gathered at the bus stop outside the Moorvale shopping centre where he was murdered, laying a wreath in his memory at the time of his death.

"Manmeet's murder has had a profound impact on his fellow drivers, especially his friends at the Garden City Bus Depot," the Rail, Train

and Bus Union said. "A year on he is still sorely missed."

Mr Alisher was a beloved Indian singer and well known in the Punjabi community and his death prompted a huge outpouring of grief.

Passengers trapped on the burning bus were saved when taxi driver Aguek Nyok kicked out the back door of the bus. Mr Alisher was remembered as a man filled with big dreams who moved to Brisbane from India.

Punjabi Welfare Association of Australia president Pinky Singh told ABC radio Mr Alisher came to Brisbane to start a new life with his family. "He was very happy -that was his dream," Ms Singh said.

TOWNSVILLE INDIAFEST 2017 City of Townsville comes to life for the third year, thanks to India Fest organised by Indian community along with Adani group which showcases the richness of one of the modern ethnic culture in the world through food, music and dance, crafts, fashion and jewellery, and yoga.

n Oct 7th 2017, more than 15000 Townsville folk basked in Indian-ness and the riverway park turned into a vibrant space that offers a unique Indian experience. This event also coincided with the festival of lights “Diwali”, one of the most famous Indian festivals.

Sam Kadavil, who helped organise the festival, said Indian culture was more than just curry.

He said the community was excited to portray diversity in culture, food and fashion.

It seems ADANI group’s commitment to Townsville may be just the start of closer ties between North Queensland and India.

“Australia has got great strengths in medical and scientific research and I think the Indians understand and respect that,” Cr Hill said. “India has one of the biggest pharmaceutical industries in the world.”

Mining giant Adani is establishing its regional headquarters in Townsville and last week announced the city would host half of its fly-in, fly-out workforce for the Carmichael mine project.

“There are opportunities for us in agriculture to provide things like chickpeas into the Indian market as well as education, whether we do it online or we do it with students coming and studying here,” Cr Hill said.

“Adani is a company but it’s not the only company in India.”

Cr Hill said Adani helped to start the relationship between the two regions that was now expanding, with Dr Gondane also visiting the Australian Institute of Marine Science on Saturday afternoon.

AIMS chief operating officer David Mead said the institute conducted research in India and Saturday’s visit was about looking to build on that.

“We have been exploring ¬options as to research partnerships, particularly in the healthy coastal-type areas where there are crossovers of interests in which both areas are trying to improve the health of the coastlines of the countries,” he said.

MOSAIC Festival by Multicultural Queensland

M

OSAIC is an allinclusive festival that celebrates and welcomes the diverse communities that call Brisbane home. Built off the success of WELCOME Fest and Queensland Multicultural Festival, MOSAIC features music and dance performances from across the world, traditional arts and crafts, cultural cooking demonstrations, food stalls, story-telling and many youth and kids activities.

It is also a family-orientated festival showcasing Brisbane's cultural diversity through music and dance performances, pop-up arts, crafts and food stalls, global cuisine demonstrations, story-telling, a World Fashion Show plus an animal farm and kids’ activities.

Roma street Parklands on October 8th which was forecasted to be a sunny spring day however the festival unleashed a storm of world music, dance and food — aka the type of storm that brightens things up, rather than darkens clouds.

Three stages showcased performances, acoustic songs and cultural storytelling, while roving artists kept things interesting amongst the crowds, celebrating the many talents Brisbanites had to offer.

It was treat for the taste buds with an array of international cuisine which certainly ended up being one of the event's highlights. Brisbanites feasted through a range of food and market stalls, and participated in a few global cooking demos, while enjoying the world fashion show and trying some arts and crafts at stalls.

Kashmiri Pandits Australia (KPA) celebrated Diwali in their own style

K

ashmiri Pandits Australia (KPA), a registered body for all Kashmiri Pandits (KP), has been celebrating Diwali in their own unique way every year. Continuing that tradition, this year too, the members of the community got together and celebrated Diwali in style.

The event was well attended by families from North, Central and South of Brisbane, in their traditional dresses.

How can a KP function be complete without their unique and mouth-watering food items. And

for this year, the menu was typical “Monj Haakh” (Knol Khol), “Nadroo” (Lotus Roots), “Chokk Waangun” (Sour Eggplant), “Kashmiri Raajma” (Red Kidney Beans) and Rice. It was gracefully followed by desserts - Kheer (Milk Pudding), “Gajar Ka Halwa” (Carrot Pudding) & Ice cream!

The members of KPA enjoyed the event by having a small prayer and playing different games, which was hosted by their kids (all under 12 years). Kids, moms and dads and their extended friends enjoyed the time. Sparkles were also utilised well, as per the occasion.

L

et’s understand the etymological meaning of word Shiva. Sham karoti iti shiva, in Sanskrit sham means auspiciousness, Karoti means to create, meaning the one who creates auspiciousness is Shiva.

If this is true then why is Shiva called a destroyer or ‘Pralay karak’?

Shiva destroys the world but it is not the physical world that has manifested rather he destroys the internal world to release the soul trapped inside the body.

• Shiva is a greatest of all the ascetics (he is called Bairagi), he is totally withdrawn from this mundane world, absolutely focussed inwards. This is why we always see Shiva in a meditative pose with his eyes closed and always in eternal bliss.

• His body is naked smeared with ashes. Ash symbolises that once soul leaves the body, the body has to get back to elemental form either in the form of ash when it is burnt or it decomposes and becomes one with the soil if it is buried.

Ash on his body may give us a message that Shiva’s connection with us is in elemental form, he looks forward for our Atma (soul) to merge unto him.

He wears a snake (Cobra) around his neck that coils his neck thrice. Cobra is deadly poisonous and reminds us of death. Shiva puts it around his neck like an ornament indicating that he is beyond the fear of death. The three coils may represent ‘Trikal’ – past, present and future to show that Shiva has conquered the dimension of time. (There are different stories about snake around Shiva’s neck which will be featured in my next blog) He has hosted river Ganga on his head. King Bhagiratha wanted to seek salvation for all his ancestors and the only way he could have done so was by invoking celestial river Ganga to flow from heaven down to earth. He did penances for many years to invoke Ganga.

Force and velocity of Ganga was so great and it would have devastated the entire earth.

All the gods went to Shiva and requested him to stop such a destruction to humanity. Lord Shiva, personification of compassion, stood up spreading his matted hair and made Ganga halt there and she calmed down. So when she moved towards the earth she was motherly, fertile and benevolent. (Ganga Mahatmya Puran)

I used to think Shiva’s skin colour is blue or reddish pink as depicted in the pictures until I understood the meaning of a shloka (verse) that describes Shiva.

But Shiva is also described as Nirakar (formless), Nirvikar (without any desires), Nirmohi (without any attachments), Nirahakari (without any ego) and he is Anadi-Anant (without beginning and end) Lord Shiva is depicted with three eyes (Trinetra) the two eyes are always closed and he is in constant meditation and his third eye is placed between his brows vertically and when he opens it he looks into space because this eye of his emits fire of his Tapas-his great meditation lights up the fire.

OM NAMAHA SHIVAY For understanding Shiva in totality one life is not enough, I’m just trying to sip few drops from the large ocean of knowledge and I always believe in sharing what I understand with others.

Rolf Gomes started his working life as an electrical engineer before turning to medicine. “If you live in the bush it’s hard to get the same level of medical care as you can in the city, but now a doctor has come up with an ambitious idea to change all that.”

The first time he saw a beating heart, with its ‘valves and plumbing and electrics’, he was ‘hooked’.

Then, as a young registrar in country hospitals, he experienced first-hand the challenges of trying to diagnose and treat patients without the specialist and diagnostic services that people in the city take for granted.

As a cardiologist Dr Gomes had identified the problem, but as an engineer he sought to solve it.

Do you feel bloated? Ayurvedic insights

Bloating is one of the common symptoms that many clients complain over the consultation. More than 30-40%of of people are experiencing gases and bloating which they describe as gastric trouble.

I

t is very interesting to see many people have not noted it carefully and do think to have a good digestion regardless of bloated and frequent gases. Let’s discuss how an ancient science Ayurveda describes this condition.

According to Ayurveda, good digestion is the main indicator of good health and wellbeing. And regular, persistent bloating and gases is the sign of poor digestion, and overall health needs of extra care.

What is bloating?

Wikipedia or dictionary defines bloating as any abnormal general swelling or increase in diameter of abdominal area.

The symptom of full and tight abdomen causing abdominal pain, discomfort or weak digestive function is understood as bloating.

What cause Bloating?

In Ayurveda, Agni is called Digestive fire which helps to digest.

While intestinal or abdominal bloating and gases is the sign of dysfunction of the agni. i.e digestive fire.

Usually it is a type of Vata imbalance. Ayurveda describe bloating as the first sign of gastro intestinal imbalance. Occasional bloating or gases is normal but it is regular or persistent is telling the story of digestive imbalance.

Bloating may occurs due to indigestion, that our gastrointestinal was not able to split food into small particles and produce nourishing enzymes into the tissues.

Ayurveda says, it is linked to a nervous stomach.

Bloating may be related to: Food habits • Eating heavy and fatty foods, which can delay stomach emptying • Some beans and eating salads often • Drinking milk in some adults • Drinking carbonated drinks and gassy food • Several factors that cause to swallow air like eating too quickly, drinking through a straw, chewing gum or sucking on candies • Raw or uncooked food which is difficult to digest for somebody having weak Agni or poor digestion is a major cause of bloating.

• More cold food or drinks Stress or anxiety Addiction • Smoking

Certain medicines like narcotics, calcium channel blockers slow the gut, and may lead to gas being trapped in the bowel, due to slow movement.

Some health condition • A gastrointestinal infection, blockage or disease • Irritable bowel syndrome, a condition characterized by abdominal pain or cramping and changes in bowel function • Conditions such as celiac disease or lactose intolerance in which the intestines aren’t able to digest and absorb certain components of food Ayurvedic management of bloating In Ayurveda, this condition is called as Aadhmaana, a type of Vata imbalance. Treatment modalities include measures to promote deepana (by carminatives), paachana (by digestives) and vaataanulomana (by gas expellers).

Preventive Ayurveda • Enjoy cooked foods mostly Do you know there are two types of cooking. One cooking happens in the kitchen and second cooking happens within us inside.

Somebody who has a good cooking inside can eat everything raw but somebody who has a weak kitchen inside must cook everything.

Ayurveda it is ideal to eat cooked foods to keep up the digestion alright.

• Spice up your food Uses of the Ayurveda spices are not only for the purpose of tastes. Spices are itself a medicine and adding to your food converts your food into a real medicine. So Ayurvedic cooking is the method of blending food with spices and ghee. Some of the common spices that balance the agni are cumin seeds, ajwain, fennel seeds, ginger, asafoetida etc.

Use of the ghee itself helps to lubricate your food and helps to hydrate the intestine for proper digestion, absorption and elimination.

• Eat mindful Why do we have 32 teeth? Of course, for chewing and smiling perfectly. Lets chew our food properly using all of them. Chewing itself is an important part of digestion. Chew and swallow quickly is a cause of indigestion and gases.

Let’s chew mindfully using all the 32 teeth. Ideally chew up to 32 times per bolus. Sit quiet and eating slowly is the secret of happy digestion.

• Drink herbal tea and chew fennel seeds after meals Drinking warm water or tea with the meal is the best way to im-

proved your agni. Ayurveda says, drinking liquid before the meal dilutes the digestive enzymes and weakens the digestion and drinking liquid after the meal increase heaviness and slower the digestion.

So drinking some herbal tea like ginger tea, cumin tea, ajwain tea and butter milk (ayurvedic lassi) is good together.

Also chewing some fennel, ajwain or cumin seeds after food helps to prevent any digestive issue.

• Eat Limited One way to prevent formation of gas is to take food based on one’s intake capacity. One rule of thumb is to have solids half the stomach, 25% water and the remaining 25% be left empty. This should be found out through personal experience.

Ayurveda discourages eating to full.

• Reduce following food items Beans, Nuts (especially groundnuts and cashew nuts), Root vegetables

such as potato, cabbage, onions, garlic, cauliflower, radishes, cucumbers, peas, Prunes such as jujube fruits, apple, grapes, bananas, bran and whole grains, dairy products and milk, eggs, high fat foods, fried foods, fermented foods, fatty meats, uncooked chutneys.

Brisbane Super Kings multicultural cricket grand final ceremony

risbane Super Kings (BSK) is Brisbane’s first and only multicultural cricket club.

BSK was established in 2012 aimed at providing a platform for nurturing the cricketing talent amongst the local community of subcontinent origin. Ever since its inception, BSK has become the household name for cricket among the wider community in Brisbane and always strived to bring the people from different backgrounds together for one common interest, which is cricket.

BSK was inspired by the successful Indian premier league’s cricket team Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

Just how CSK won the hearts of millions of crickets lovers, BSK is on the same track to create a cult of among locals in Brisbane. BSK welcomes anyone who has love for the game irrespective of age, race, and competency.

Over the 5 years in operation, BSK has secured itself a spot in the Australian cricketing calendar every year with its annual tournament that brings a rainbow of teams across Brisbane.

The 5th Annual cricket tournament proved to be a success and

demonstrated its evolution from previous years. This year’s tournament consisted of 32 teams from multicultural communities; also as expected the tournament was well received by the locals, community members, leaders and government bodies. The grand final was held at the famous Tingalpa Cricket Ground on 22nd Oct, 2016 followed by a “Grand Award Night” at Michael’s Oriental Restaurant here in Brisbane, with dinner, music, dance and also some motivational and promising speech from our guests.

The presentation ceremony was attended by elite guests, local politicians and various community leaders, who wished well for the organization ever since the its first year.

MP Duncan Pegg presented the winners trophy, while MP Steve Minnikin presented the runners trophy and shared their valuable thoughts about the importance of bringing the community closer and pledged their support towards taking BSK to the next level.

The event came to an end with a vote of thanks from the president and founder Mr Sathish Rajendran, as well as cake cutting ceremony to celebrate Sathish’s birthday.
