There areHindi schools, kavi sat111J1elt111s,Hindi .radio stations and Hindipublications galorein Australia's Indiancommunity, all doingtheirbit topromote the cause of tbe language inthis country.

Yet,as Hindi-lover andacademic PetetFriedlander observes, thereis no coordinatedeffortfor Hindiactivities across Australia.

Dr Friedlander,SeniorLecmrerin Hindi andUrdu at Australian National University'sCollegeof Asia andthe Pacific, recently organised a national conferenceto fill this gap. DrAbdul Ka/am spoke exclusively with Indian Link's GAURAVPANDEYduringhis 2011 visitto Sydney

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam,oneof India'smost loved presidents andthecountry'sbest-known scientist,visited Anstraliain 2011.

AsaguestoftheUniversityofSydney, hewasinvitedtodeliveralecn.1reunder SydneyIdeas, the university'spremier public lectureseriesprogram thatbringssomeof world's leadingthinkerstothewiderSydney community.

Duringthevisit,healsoreceivedan honorary doctorate,his41st,fromthe UniversityofSydney,andmetwithSydney's Indiancommunity atareceptionheld inhis honour arHotelShangri-La.

Essentially amanof ideas,bein1pressed withhis honesty andabsolute conviction. Hecook timeouttochatexclusivelywith IndianLiuk.

IL: In India, the fruits of globalization have not reached the poor What should be done to improve the lives of the most marginalised sections of India's society?

Dr. Kalam: The problems are sti.ll there. lnIndia,700millionpeople,that isroughly70%,of thepopLtlation,live in villages.Sothereis aneedtoprovide facilitiesinvillageswhichwillaidtheir development.Thereforewehaveevolved aconceptcalledPURA,orProviding UrbanAmenitiesinRuralAreas.There isaneedtoestablishabout7000PURAs

inIndia. UndereachPURA,acluster of about20to30villagesis provided withphysical connectivity, electronic connectivityandknowledgeconnectivity. Thiswillleadtoeconomic connectivity. Thereare numberofoperationalPURA inIndiainitiatedby many educational and healthcareorganisations, industry and other institutions.TheGovernmentof Indiais already movingaheadwiththe implementation ofPURAon anational scaleacrossseveral districts, with an intention of establishingtwoPURAsin every district ofthecoumry. So,underthis program, the economic prosperityof urban areaswill reachtheruralareas.Ourfocus is toempowervillageswithearningcapacity, becauseunless earning capaci1:yis there, healthcareandotherfacilitieshavelittle meaning. Oneof therequirements ofthis programistospread kno,,,ledge th.rough satellitecommunicationandothermedia. Forexample, mobileclinics inlndiahave takenhealthfacilitiesto rural areas.

IL:Thesub-continent haswitnessed widespreadviolenceand ciYilunrestin recentyears Oftentheseconflictsarc aresultof theinjusticemetedoutto citizens Whatcanwedotoensurethere isgreaterharmonyinthesociety?

Dr. Kalam: This problemspringsupin different placesatdifferenttimes.Itis a worldphenomenon.TheArabnationsare

goingthroughthesomeproblems. There havebeen terroristattacksevenintheUS.I am convincedthattheprosperityofafew nationswiU notbring prosperity toallthe nations.

Therefore,Imlk of evolutionof enlightenedcitizens. First, throughoutthe world, weneed to provide educationwith valuesystem to our citizens. This ismissing intoday'ssociety.Second,in religion there aretwo components, oneis, spiritualityand another istheology.Theology is unique forareligion, but spiritualityis common to every religion. So,wecan connectreligions using the common spiritual elementin them. Whenweareabletobridgereligions in thisway, tolerancewiU come. Third,we needcoalleviatepoverty. So,theevolution of enlightened citizenswill happen withthesummationof educationwith valuesystem, bridging religions through spirituality and removing poverty. This is what Ipropose.

IL: You were an eminent scientist and a weU-respected figure, even before you became the President of India How do we encourage India's intellectual wealth to play a more active role in governance and nation building?

Dr. Kalam: An importantincidenttook placeinIndiamany years agowhichcan serve arolemodel forourcitizens. In 1954, Dr.RajendraPrasad, thefirstPresidentof

Maths whiz SEYOON RAGAVAN brought home a gold medal from the International Mathematics Olympiad competition this month. The sixteen-year-old Year 11 student at Sydney's Knox GrammarSchool tellsus why he loves numbers

Whydoesmathsappealtoyou?

At theOlympiadlevel, maths couldbe describedasanythingbutroutine. Quite oftenthereisalotof creativity, ingenuity andstabbingaroundin thedarkcowards findingasolutiontoaproblem. When hoursof workatoneproblem culminates inchatsingular moment of clarity when everythingfallsincoplace,ic canbevery satisfying.Anothergreatthingaboutmaths isthatthefurtheryou exploreit, thefurther youfindthedeeperunderlyingconnections between seemingly unrelatedstrandsof mathematics.

Whatinterestedyouaboutmaths, as a youngchildstartingschool?

Tobecompletely honest, at chat timethe primary drivingfactor wassimply that 1happenedtobereasonably goodatitl lt cookuntilmaybeIwas 10or 11 when 1starteddelvingintothemorecreative endof rnatl1s,and slowly Idevelopedan appreciationofthebeauty andcreativity thatwentintosucharich field.

Which mathematicianshave influenced you?

lwouldn'tsay I'vedoneenoughin mathematicsyet to name mathematicians whohavenecessarilyinfluencedmy work. That said, thereare definitely some mathematicianswhoI admire, forexample Euclid,LeonhardEuler,CarlFriedrich Gauss,PaulErdos, andof courseourvery ownTerry Tao.

Areyou goingtogo onto become a famousmathematician likeTerryTao, the otherstudentfromAustraliawho wontheMathsInternational Olympiad? Where doyouseeyourselfatthirty?

I'm not coosurewhereI want togoin terms of acareer, butI'ddefinitely liketo continuewithsomethingmathematical. Terry Tao is theperfect exampleof the fact chat researchmathematicianscan in fact bewell-rmmded inruviduals,soI do enjoy bringinghimup asan examplewhen discussingmy career optionswith others!

What would yousaytoastudentlike mewhothinksmathsisa chore?

Mathsisalways goingto beachoreif you &imply dothe tasksyou'regiven,d1oughchis issufficient toget through theHSC. But ifyou wanttoseetheelegancechatmaths reallyhasaboutic, you needcodivein, look forpatternsandpursuemad1ernaticaltruth yourself. At theendoftheday, mathematics artheresearch levelisan endlesspursuitof absolute truth.

Whyaresomanykidsscared ofmaths?

Ithink d1isgoes back comaths beingseen asalargely routinething-peopleseeit as'youjustdrillthetechniquesin, and thenit'sjustploughingthrough task after taskwicb the samedrillevery single time.' Sometimes this"endlessploughing"can seem daunting, and perhaps thisisoneof thereasonsthatsomestudentstendro be scaredoffby maths.Unfortunately, chere isalsoamoderately prevalentperception ofmathsasanamalgamationof ugly equations, whereas d1ereality is thatmaths is ultimately aboutelegantideas, principles andargrnnentschathaveshapedour knowledgeofthefield.

Ihave tosay inmy personalexperience

Ihaven't seenanawfullot of rufference betweenhowboysandgirlshandlemaths. However, d1ere.isthe issueof lower proportions ofgirlsperformingin mad1s atthehighestlevel. \\YhileI can'tsay I'm qualifiedenoughtoaccountforthis,1 definitely thinkthisisanissuechatisbeing improved on,and it wouldbereally good if wecouldseean eveningombetween the boysandgirls populating theseOlympiads withinthenextten to fifteenyears.

WHYdoweneedmaths,Seyoon???

AsIseeit,d1ereare threemainreasons:

1. Practicalsciences suchasphysicsand chemistry, thatdirectly influencethe everyday workings of theworld, frommetal extractionprocessestospaceexploration

toglobal communication, are entirely contingentonmathematical foundations laid down by mathematiciansovercenmries.

2.Puremathematicsalsohasdirect applicationsind1ereal\Vmld.Twoof my favouriteexamples arethe useof parabolicdishesin radiotelescopes, owing tothereflectionpropertiesunderlyingdie geometry of d1e parabola, and also d1e roleof primenumbersincryptography andsecurity.Prime numbers are stillan areaof heavy researchin themathematical world, andif it weren'tforthem, your bankaccountswouldall be bustthanks co hackers!

3.Asa discipline, mathematics develops the foundations of critical chinkingskills involvedinsystematically breakingdown complexsituations d1atarekey inseveral od1ersubjectsanddisciplines,including the humanities, wherequantities of work often culminate incarefully constructingan argumentin essay form.

Asiansandmaths lsthestereotype true?

Onceagain,I don'tthinkI'mexactly qualified copass educatedcomment onthis.

Youprobablydomathsforfun.Tell usa fun maths activitythatyou have enjoyed?

Iabsolutely lovedoingmaths forthe pureftmof it!Oneexampleof afun activity I've enjoyedis our trainingcamps

inDecember andApril. Eachnightme students wouldhaveanevening problem sessionwid1ourlecturerswherewe'djust ruscuss randomproblems.Oneofd1em wouldposeaproblem to us,and we'd spend timetalkingwitheachotheranddiscussing the problem. Oftentheproblemswere very unusualinflavour, andsothe camaraderie in discussingthese problemswitheach otherand slowly workingour\vay towards aninformed solution istruly fi.m and enjoyable.

Knowagoodmathsjoke?

Five out of every four peopledonot understand fractions.

Would it betruetosaythatyouknow mathsbetterthansomeoftheteachers atschool?

TheteachersacschoolandIspecialise indifferentareasofmad1s.Teachers wouldbeby all means more well-versedin fieldstypically coveredinundergraduate mathen1atics,for examplethose pertaining tolinearalgebraandcalculus, whereas my expertiseliesmorewith discretefields ofmathematics, suchas combinatorics andnumbertheory.Ishould notechat quiteafewoftheteachers wouldalso beexperiencedin one or moreofthese areasaswell, especiaUy if they continued mathsbeyondd1eundergraduate level. Nevertheless, these teachersareallof course farmoreexperienced d1.anIam,so 1 definitely havealottolearnfrom theml

Ifyou had to impress agirlwithyour mathsskills, whatwould yousayto her?

Iwouldgiveherastandard52-carddeck co shuffleandplaceona table, and d1en I wouldwritethename of a cardon apiece ofpaper andplaceit facedown. 1 would askherco dealtwelvecardsto the table, facedown, askingher to select any four. The couched cards would be mrned face up, andtheremainingcardsgatheredand returnedto the bottom of me pack.

Forexample'ssake,I'Uassumed1at the fourface-up cardsareafour, seven, ten, andking.I wouldmendealcardson copofeachof the four, dealingenough cards tobringthe total of each pile up to ten. Forexample,I would deal sixcards on thefour, counting, "5,6,7,8,9, 10.'' Threecards aredealt on d1eseven.No cardsare dealton the ten. Each royal card countsasten,so nocardsareplacedon theking.

The values of the four cardsare now added:4,7, lO,and 10equals31.I'd handherthepackandaskher to count tod1e 31st card, and turnit over. Funnily enough, ithappensrobethesameas d1e cardwhose nameI'd writtendown atthe beginning!I'll leaveyou to decidewhy.

BAJRANGI BHAIJAAN

STARRING: Salman Khan, Kareena Kapoor Khan,NawazuddinSiddiqui, Harshaali Malhotra, Om Puri DIRECTOR:Kabir Khan

•'k-/d( <

Bajrang Bali ki Kasam, the muchawaitedSalman Khan Eid release, Bajrangi Bhaijaan isa far cryfrom the regular SalmanKhanfilms.Though packedwith a fewself-glorification scenesandafar-fetchedplot, thisfilm, fora change, issensible. It's alight,

emotionally-packeddrama that touches your heart.

It isthestory ofPavanKumar Chaturvedi aka Bajrangi Bhaijaan, a sincere devotee ofLordHanuman, who takesitupon himself to reunite a mute 6-year-old Pakistanigirt, Shahida, who he calls Munni, with herfamily across the border.

Whatmakes thisfilmstand apart among Salman'srepertoire isthathe plays thesaviour Bajrangi Bhaijaan with conviction of asimpleton andwins hearts instantly when he makes up his ".iill

on 041-435-4999

mindto do no wrong. So muchso thatwhenheis questioned, "Tum bahadur ho ya bewakoof', he hasno answer.

SalmanKhan ishis usual light-hearted self, doing what comesnaturally to him. But, fortunately thosescenesareso wellamalgamated into the screenplay that, even the frivolity displayed, seems like an extension of his character andgains credibility. Histrialsand tribulationsare endearing and you are one with him in hismission.

With not asingle word ofdialogue to mouth, little Harshaali asShahida, foors youwith her expressive eyes, especiallyher forlorn look.Your heartmeltswhen she clings on to Salman and you chuckle when she is playfully naughty or yearns to eat non-veg.Shesharesa strong on-screen chemistry with Salman and probably that'swhy the film iseffective.

Every other character in thefilmis well-etched.NawazuddinSiddiqui as ChandNawab,a freelancesmalltown broadcast journalist, who trails Bajrangi Bhaijaan while he isinPakistan, performscompetently. He adds a comic tinge to hischaracter with ease, displaying hisversatility asan actor.

Kareena playsSalman'slove angle, Rasika. She hasaminisculerole that doesnotgo beyond the perfunctory glamour quotient.

SharatSaxena asRasika'sfather Dayanandand the actresswho plays Shahida's mother have their screen moments.

OmPuri in aspecial appearance as the Moulvi iswasted.

The premise ofdirector Kabir Khan's film maysound like asimple road journey, but the tale unfurls with ample adventurous excitement laced with humour, melodrama and cinematic libertywhich includessome tacky and stereotypicalscenes.

On the technicalfront, thefilm, with decent production values, hasa realistic approachsansthe glossinessof a block buster.

Aseem Mishra'scinematography captures thewide-sceniclandscapes and the close up of the tear dropfalling fromSalman's eye, effortlessly.

Thesongs, thoughwell-meshed into the script, don't leave an impact on thenarration.Thefirstsongwith the lyrics, "Chai beta selfie le le re" which introducesSalman, iswell choreographed. Whereas, the other song with the lyrics, "Bhook lagi bhook lagi, zoron ki bhook lagi (ChickenSong), withsome yodelling, hasa racy tune of anoft-heardKonkani/ Marathi remix, but ischaotically choreographed. Boththesesongscaterstrictly to front benchers.

And the Sufisong "Bhar dojholi meri," featuring AdnanSarniusedin one of the episodic climax, is exhilarating, but lost in the mayhem of the sequence of events.

ApartfromSalman, watch Bajrangi Bhaijaanfor itsstrong message oflove andbrotherhood bonding, whichisso relevanttoday.

TROYRIBEIRO

MYTHICAL MAGNUM OPUS

is not utterly satisfying. Like most Rajamouli's films, Baahubali too is a regular revenge drama. The only difference is thatit'ssetin an imaginary world made on a lavish scale and againstthe backdrop ofa royal family.

BAAHUBALI: THE BEGINNING

STARRING: Prabhas, Rana Daggubati, Anushka Shetty, Tamannah Bhatia, Nasser, Ramya Krishnan, Prabhakar, Rohini

DIRECTOR: S.S Rajamouli ..,......,\

Thisone has everything Indian cinema hasn'twitnessed sofar.

Baahubali: The Beginning almost placesTelugu cinema on parwith Hollywood standards withitsvision, extravagantvisuals and the lavish scale on whichit's made. In his attemptto make a world class product, Rajamouli maynothave passed in distinction but this attempt, despite ts inconsistencies, can't be forgotten easily. But all that glitters is notgold, and although Baahubali is neatly enveloped in a golden wrapper, whatyou find inside

MASAAN

STARRING: Sanjay Mishra, Richa Chadda, Vicky Kaushal, Shweta Tripathi, Saurabh Chadhary, Vineet Kumar, Pankaj Tripathi, Nikhil Sahni, Bhagwan Tiwari

DIRECTOR: Neeraj Ghaywan ***i. ,;

An Inda-French co-production, Masaan is a poignanttale oftwoyoungcouples, whoselivesare intertwined byfate, set against the backdrop of a crematorium ontheghatsofthe riverGangesin Benares.

Educated and fairly independent, Devi Pathak- although living in a small town - is unconventional, experimental and unapologetic aboutherlife. Whilethe unexpected death ofherlover Piyush has her internalizing hertraumatic loss, shesimultaneously balancesto maintain trucewithherfatherVidyadhar Pathak (Sanjay Mishra), a formerSanskrit teacher, now selling knick-knacks onthe bankoftheGanges. She is in disagreementwith herfatherwho is forced toshell out a hefty bribetothe police inspectorin orderto keep her "shame" underwraps.

Onthe otherhand, Deepak'stale is a tragic romanceofa promising engineeringstudentborn intothefamily ofcorpse-burners. Hefalls in lovewith an upper-caste girl, Shalu Gupta, who is willingtoelope if herfamily opposestheir

It's thestoryofa son vyingto avenge his father's death fora kingdom. But Rajamouli is no ordinaryfilmmaker. Only he can make a simple tale as entertaining, engrossing and aweinspiring as Baahubali, albeit with some minor flaws

Earlyon,we're introduced toqueen Sivagami (played byRamya Krishnan), runningforherlife clutching a baby. Shesacrificesher lifeforthe infant, who issaved and raised by a tribe residing atthefootofa giganticwaterfall. He's named Shivudu(Prabhas), afterShiva, and is asstrongand powerful asthe lord himself. Raised unawareofhis lineage, Shivudu developsgreatrock-climbing skills. He getsinquisitiveaboutthe world beyond the giant mountain that separates histribefrom the otherside. Soon, hestarts climbing, in search ofa world he envisions.

On the othersideofthe mountain alliance.

For a maiden venture, Ghaywan's Masaan, is a sensitivelyhandled, honestfilmwithsomeintrepid truths aboutsmall townsin India, givingyou an insight intothe mind ofthe internetsavvyyouth. These are adroitlywoven intothe narrative.

Varun Grover's layered script, with a seemingly complexscreenplay, oscillates between romance and melodrama.Thescreenplay unlocks simply, throughtherealisticlivesofthe characters, bringingtothe fore, societal taboos like morality, sexual exploration and romance in a caste-driven society.

Every character is intricatelywelletched and theactorsleave an indelible markwiththeirpowerful butnatural performances.

Vicky Kaushal as Deepak, with his boynext-doorlooks, is impressive. A bundle oftalent, heslipsintohis characterwith unquestionable ease and sincerity. He stealsyour heartwith his coy demeanour when hewoos his lady love. You empathisewith his pain and frustrations. Thescenewhere he breaks down before his friends after losingShalu is heartwrenching. He is aptlysupported in a realistic performance byShweta Tripathi as Shalu, a collegian, whofalls in love with his simplicity. On screen, they make an endearingpair.

Richa Chadda witha stoicallyglum and a stubborn demeanouras Devi, borders on being a rebel without a cause. A misfit

is Mahishmati, the mythical kingdom ruled by Bhallala Deva (Rana), a ruler consumed by hisown ego; a narcissist whoturns hisown people intoslaves. He's equallystrong and takes a giant bison bythe horns, literally. Bhalla keeps Devasena (Anushka), a formerprincess in his captivity, and shestronglybelieves herson will come and freeher.

Rajamouli's idea oftwoworlds separated bya mountain is impressive. He usesittoseparategood from evil. If Mahishmati comprises peoplewho kill theirownforthethrone. peoplefrom the tribegooutoftheirwaytosavea life.

Thefrst halfhardly has anything riveting happeningto keepyou hooked. Aswefollow Prabhas on hisquestto learn about his own identity, we meet Avantika (famannah), a warrior, who is partofa small rebel groupthat has chosen herto free Devasena. Instead ofspeedingupthe proceedings, there's a needless romantictrack between Shivudu and Avantika, who is initially portrayed as a brave, mission-focused warrior.

Andjustfor a few minutes itwas a treattowatch a leading actress perform without the trappings of an archetypal Telugu cinema heroine. Alas, it doesn't last longand wesoonseeAvantika and Shivudu in a sensuoussong andatthe end ofit. she's restingon his chest. Suddenly, she's reminded of her mission asthough somebody had the button tothe mission bell and had pressed it. Shegetsbackinto herwarrior costume, leaveswith a heavy heart, only to be

rescued byShivudu later. The whole pointofhavingTamannah play a warrior justdoesn't makesense. Goingbythe approach, itappears like she wasmerely castto play Prabhas's pair because hisfanswould liketosee him romance somebody.

It's in thesecond half Baahubali is truly majestictowatch. Itprovidesthe kind ofvisuals, entertainment and action that'll makeyou fall in lovewiththe film, though briefy. The 20-30 minutes warsequences are breathtaking, as an armyofthousands lockhornson a battlefield. Senthil Kumar'sspectacular camerawork isanother reasonwhy every frame is beautiful and it elevatesthe whole experiencewhen coupled with greatsound.Sabu Cyril and Srinivas Mohan deservethunderousapplausefor creatingincredibly realistic sets and lifelike visual effects.

Prabhas and Rana match each other withtheirsolid performances. Rana as the ruthless Bhallala Deva is excellent. Butthe pick oftheactorshasto be Ramya Krishnan asSivagami, who is effortlessly at ease in her character. Sathyaraj tooshone as Kattapa.

Ifonly Rajamouli had shown halfthe creativitythatheused to choreograph the battlescenes in hiswriting, Baahuba/1would've been a much better film. The kind of creativity that turned a fyintoa revenge-seekingcharacter in Eega. Itneedsthe kind ofwritingthat'll makeyou believethat Baahubali is more thanjustgloss.

in hersurroundings, she tells herfather, "jitni chhotijagah, utni chhoti soch". While she portrays Deviwith conviction, thestreakofindependence in her character isnotentirelysubstantial.

Sanjay Mishra asVidyadhar Pathak, thesmall town Sanskritteacher and fatherwho is burdenedwithsocietal pressures, rendersa realistic and brilliant performance.

Plagued bythethoughtofthe ignominy he will bringto hisfamily, Saurabh Chadhary as Piyush, in a small but significant role, is convincing.

Bhagwan Tiwari asthecorruptpolice inspector, Pankaj Tripathi asSathyajiDevi's besotted colleague, and Nikhil Sahni as Jhonta -the earnestlittle boy whoworksfor Vidhyadhar, maketheir presencefelt.

While thestory and performances are intense, whatbreaksthe monotony and provides relief, isthe humourthat is strewn occasionally in theform oftaut one-liners and old flm songs. The earthy background score alongwith thesoulful songs bythe indie band Indian Ocean is soothing and meditative. It encapsulates theflavourofthe place and mesheswell intothe narration.

CinematographerAvinashArun Dhaware's camera work brilliantly captures Benares in all its elements. The atmosphericlightingatthecrematorium addstothe eerie and aestheticvalue of thescenes.

Overall, Masaan keepsyou riveted emotionally and hauntsyou long after you leave thetheatre.

UP-TO-DATE NEWS ON WHAT'S HOT AND HAPPENING IN BOLLYWOOD

HARSHAALI IS A CHATTERBOX

Child actor Harshaali Malhotra, who plays a mute girl in Salman Khan's Bajrangi Bhaijaan, hastouched the heartsofviewerswith her endearing performance. Butshe is extremely talkative in real life, saysher mother.

Harshaali is a livewire, her mother Kaja! Malhotra revealed recently. Duringworkshops, she would worry aboutwhether the chatterboxwould settle down and toethe line, she added. "There is no difference in her as a person.Thewayshewas earlier is exactlyhowshe is now," she said, emphasising howshootingschedules haven't affected Harshaali.

Yet main lead Salman Khan and directorKabir Khan did all they could not onlytotakecareofher by playing with her between shots, but alsoto bringoutthebestin her.

There's been flood of attention on the young actor eversince the film was released (Farah Khangoingso far asto call her"thefind ofthe century''). Yet Harshaali's parentssaytheywill ensure she enjoysa normal childhood while still workinginfilms.

"Whatwe decidefor her career would obviously dependon the offers we receive," a beaming Malhotra told reporters, but added they are not keen on TV rolesfortheir buddingstar.

IT'S THE POWER OF THE PEN THIS EID!

e bigsilverscreen winner this Eid is Vijayendra Prasad. You manynot have heard that name before, butyou've mostdefinitely eard ofhistwofilms, both ofwhich released thisfestiveseason. Prasad is thewriterofthetwo mega hitsthathavetakentinseltown bystorm thisfortnight, the bilingual Baahubali and the Hindi Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

Prasad's son S.S Rajamouli directed the Telugu-Tamil historical fction film Bahubali, starringsouthern stars Prabhas and Rana Daggubati. The film also released in Malayalam and Hindi. Itgrossed overRs. 350 crore worldwide injust ten days, a record ofsorts.

Ifthe Mahabharat was the inspiration behind Bahubali, Prasad's otherfilm, the Salman Khan starrer Bajrangi Bhaijaan, which raked in overRs. 100 crore injust three days, is inspired from an old Chiranjeevi film and also based on a real life story.

"Chiranjeevi's 1987 Telugu film Pasivadi Pranam moved me a lot. I wanted to rehash it and give it a contemporary touch. I had also learnt about thestory of a Pakistani couplewho came to Indiafortheir daughter's heartsurgery because theycouldn't afford it in their country," Prasad said.

"The parents weretouched bythegenerosityofthe Indianssomuchthatthey couldn'tstoptalking about it. Thisgotme thinking. I decided towork on a story that connected people over India-Pakistan border," he added.

Theflm was offered toAaamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Rajinikanth, Puneeth Rajkumarand Allu Arjun. But Prasad admitsSalman wasthe best choice forthe film.

"Allthework he'sbeendoingthrough hisBeing Human foundation, particularly, the 2,000 heart operations he recentlyfunded, made him aptforthe lead role of Pawan/Bajrangi. Andthanks to his humanitarian acts, Salman gave the character a realistictouch," he said.

And so it'sbeen a Happy Eid all around!

probably when they embraced Hey, it's possible!

SALMAN, SRK'S BROTHERHOOD ON EID

On the piousoccasionofEid, superstarSalman Khan displayed true brotherhood by sharingtheteaser of his contemporary Shah Rukh Khan's upcomingmovie Raees.

Earlier, Shah Rukh had come forward to unveil thefirst lookofSalman's Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

Stayingtruetothe valuesof his Bajrangi Bhaijaan, which hinges upon brotherhood, Salman asked hisfans andfollowers toturn their attentionto the teaserofSRK's Raees.

"Raees ah raha hai. Filhaal teaser dekho aurenjoy karo behaad," Salman tweeted, after sharingtheflm's name via a string of posts.

Harshaali has already doneTV seriessuch as serials like Quboo/ Hai and LautAao Trisha, and many advertisements.

SIMPLE ROLE FOR SALMAN, CAR STUNTS FOR SRK

My, my how things are changing in B-Town. Firstthetwo Khansgo and make up, and startsomething of a bromance. Then, theytake on each other's personas.

See, Salman Khan hassaid hefound it hard to break his macho image in Bajrangi Bhaijaan.

"After the action-packed roles in films like Kick, Dabangg and Wanted, itwas challengingto play a simple character," the 49-year-old actor said. "My role is simple and all heart. We'veshown a typical Hindustani (Indian) guythat makes peoplego, bechara "

On the other hand, SRK,the supposed kingofromance, hasbeen doing dangerous carstunts in Bulgaria forRohitShetty's directorial Di/wale.

"Doingsome really cool carstunts and have tothankthe team ofguys who take such high risksto getthe shots. Quite Awesome. #Dilwale," the actor, also 49, tweeted recently.

Someone is probably taking notesfor the next Bollywood blockbuster, about twosiblings whowere lost in childhood, grew uptobe absolute opposites and hated each other's guts, thenthere was a family reunion, and then their souls intermingled as ifby osmosis,

It's interestingto note that Salman's Sultan will be clashingwith Raees on Eid nextyear. And both the actors have emphasised on several occasions that they are looking atthe competition positively.

Shah Rukh has turned into a liquor baronfor the Rahul Dholakia directorial, which is set in 1980s Gujarat, and tellsthestoryof a bootlegger whose business is thwarted by atough policeman. Thefilm also features Nawazuddin Siddiqui and marksthe Bollywood debutof Pakistani actress Mahira Khan.

AND THE PRESSURE IS ON!

It used to bethe Rs.100 crore club, but now the bar is raised to the 'Rs.300 crore club'. Nothanksto Bahubali and Bajrangi Bhaijaan! While most flm-wallahs are relishingthe trend the industry has taken this season, there are those who are feeling a trife nervous.

One such is Riteish Deshmukh, whose Bangistan issetto release shortly.

"Every film has a budget and a certain target audience in mind and the Rs. 100 crore mark is notnecessary for every film to besuccessful," Ritesh said recently. "Whenyousign a film, you are awarewhat range thefilm cantouch. Ifyou do Houseful/ and Grand Masti and they collect Rs.100 crore, you can expectthe next one to do similar business. Butwith Bangistan, we're not expecting the film to touch Rs.100 crore

becausefor thisfilm to besuccessful, it doesn't need to reach thatfigure."

Hmm, ok!

DEARAUNTYJI

I have recently arrivedinSydney fromKerala. where my entire family werestrong supporters ofthe CommunistParty. As you mayknow, the Communist Party has done a lot of greatwork inKerala, our literacy rates are exemplary and oursocial policies, well, don't even getme started on this Nowthe thing isthatmy father trulyadmiredJosef Stalin, andthought he was a greatman. Consequently, when I was born, he decidedthat I should be called Stalin Growing up in Kerala, thiswasn'tan issue In fact, therewasthree otherStalins in my class, exceptforthe summer of 96 when there were six of us - on account of some boystransferringto ourschool. I arrived in Australiathree months ago and I am usually metwith startled looks each time I introduce myself Everyone wantsto know about my name and unlikeKeralans, I have beentoldthat Australians don'tfeel thesame way aboutStalin as we do. So whatshould I do?Should I consider changingmy name?

Eachtime an Australianlooks atyou, alltheycanthink aboutishow manymenwerekilled bysomeone with yourname. It's like beingnamed NathuramGodse. Ifyou hadthisname, wouldn'tyouwanttochangeit? Well, it'sthe same in Australia. Know Thyself as Soul

Who am I? Where do I come from? Where am I going? Sant

I am a 40-year-oldsingle man and I have been watching allthistalk of same sex marriage onthe news. My closest cousin Ravi who is38 is all in favour ofthis and has found himself a partner andhas come out and now attends all family functions with Pravin. Everyone acceptsthis and no one says anything Ravi is fairly flamboyant and will loudly proclaim thathe should be allowedto marry whoever he wants and has hinted that he will marry Pravin whenthe time comes - as thoughthis is perfectly tine. When I listen to Ravi, I get frustrated because he acts asthough he should be ableto marry whoeverhe wants The truth is, Auntyji, 20 years ago Itoo metsomeonethatI wanted to spend the rest of my life with, but I couldn't because he wantedto listen to his parents and do the rightthing bythem He went and gotmarriedto a lady and theyhavethree grown up kids now So mythinking isthat wecan't always marry whom we wantand I don't see why Pravin thinks he should Everytime I bringthis up with Pravin we end up in an argument.
