Charity organisation Ozindcare marks twenty years ofselfless service

Ozindcareboastsahighlystructured, methodicalmannerofoperation,andthe consistencyofthecommitmentthatit exhibitshasgatheredmanysupportersover thepast20yearsofitsexistence.

FundshavealsogonetoAbhavam(a lunchprogramforpoorschoolchildrenin Bangalore),Sharan(adrugrehabprogram inMumbai),NavjeevanCentreMumbaiand FoundationBangalore(financingtheirfree

middaymealforpoorchildren).

WhenatsunamihitPapuaNewGuinea in1998,Ozindcarewasoneofthefirst organisationstorespondtothecallfor help.Notalltl1eirworkisabouthelping theneedywhoaremilesawaythough. Whatstarts offseeminglyasthe taleoftwosmall-timemusicianswith an orchestra in Haryana,Guddu(Amit Sadh)andRangeela (ArshadWarsi), who are also part-timeinformants aidingrobberiestomakea fastbuck, unfurlsasa layeredrevengesaga with khappoliticsasthebackdrop.

WhileGudduis alwaysaspiringto strikeitbig,Rangeelaisprincipled,even ifhe indulges in pettycrime. Hissinglehandedmotiveistocollectmoneyto payhislawyerfora casehehas been fighting forthe past tenyears.Again, itisonlytoearnalargesumofmoney quickly,that heagreesto kidnap Baby (Aditi Rao Hydari)andthattoo because heis inthedark abouttherealpurpose behind it.

A soundandnuancedscreenplaywith well-etchedcharacters,GudduRangeela

is a paisa vasool entertainer,withsocial messages,action,drama andhumour in abundance.Thedialoguesaresharp, hard-hitting andwitty,lacedwiththe rightamount ofhumour,albeitinthe Haryanvidialect.

AmitSadhasthejovial,flirtatious andambitiousGuddu,bringstheright amount ofenergyandrealismto his character, playinghis rolewith convivial easeandfourish. He istheperfect complementto his cousin Rangeela on screen.

Arshad WarsiasRangeela is infull formaftera long timeand an absolute treatto watch. His entry withthefamous song, Kai raat Mata ka mujhe email aaya haiseemsa tadfrivolous,but hischaracterblossoms into awellroundedone, as hisstoryisunravelled. Humour, action andemotions, Arshad as Rangeela is alwaysin command andhastheaudienceonewithhim in empathy.

Ronit Roy as thepowerfuland corruptself-proclaimedmuscleman BilluPehalwan portrays hischaracter effortlessly withtherightdegreeof ruggedruthlessness.

Aditi Rao Hydari unfortunately pales in comparison to thesethreeactors. Sheisconvincing,butdoesnot rendera powerfulperformance.

Someofthelesserknown actors who essaythecharacters of Bangali

Humouralongwithmelodrama,in equalmeasure,areperfunctoryand thosescenesdrag.Whatkeepsyou gluedarethedancepieces,which theInformer,thepoliceinspectorand hisaide,lightupthescreenwiththeir brilliantperformances.The antakshari scenewiththeconstableoutsidethe bathroom, isnothingshort of absolute talent,provingthat an actorneedsonly onescenetoshine.

Thebackgroundscoreby HiteshSonik andmusicby AmitTrivedienhancethe favourofthefilm.Thelyrics,arenot onlypoetry,butenmeshedwith humour too, capturetheessenceofthefilm's settingso aptly.

ThecinematographybyJamie Fowlds issmoothandpictureperfect andcan't go unnoticed.

arewell-choreographedandcaptured brilliantly.Theskillsofthedancersare sureto bowlyou over.

Varun Dhawan asSuresh performs competently,displayinghisdancing skillseffectively,butit isShraddha Kapoor, asVinnie, who isthesurprise package.Withlithe andgraceful dancing skills,shemakeshermarkas a dancer,forthefirsttimeever.Andhow.

LaurenGottleibas Olive,who comesasasubstituteforVinnie, is phenomenalas adancer.Prabhudeva, asVishnuSir,isexpectedlyspectacular in hisopeningdancesequence. However,withhis weakdialoguedelivery andnegligibleemoting skills, heis notconvincing in the emotional and drunkenscenes.

Mountedon amagnificentscale,the visualsbycinematographerVijayArora arecaptivating,especiallytheonesin LasVegas.Severalframesarepictureperfect,showing hismastery overhis craft.

Thefilm isjazzyandvibrant, but drags inparts,especiallythenumerous dances,whichareunwarranted.This makesthefilmseem like an unending collageofdance sequences, sans the emotionalquotient.Thelast actplays thepatrioticthemefullthrottleand getstheaudienceemotionally involved. Anybodywho remotelylovesdancingwill enjoythis one.

Quality writing apart,Subhash Kapoor'sdirectionexudesintelligence andmaturity. His astutehandling of a complexdrama, withstrongmessages, camouflagedin entertainment,is extraordinary.Thereisneveradull moment andthescript is crispandwellcontained.

Theactionscenesareengaging andnotmerelytechnically-soundand robotic.Youfeelforthecharactersand longforthevillainto bepunished.

Big surprisescomeinsmallpackages, and Guddu Rangeela is easily oneofthe best ones inthefirsthalf ofthisyear.
