There's been much discussion thisyear about women in politics being second classcitizens, and this runs the entire gamutfromjunior staffers tohigh profile leaders. Whywould awoman wanttoenterpolitics now?

IndianLinkrecentlycaughtupwith Yashaboutrunning start-ups,youth,and personal and professional growth.
Tell me what itmeans toyou to be recognised in the 40 Under 40 list of influence
It'sgreatvalidation toget a nodofapproval fro1n apanel ofsuccessful people in respectable positions. it'salso a title that
allowsme togetintoctifferentrooms thatI wasn'tinbefore
But thebigthingfor me is beingableto form thoseconnectionswithotherpeople on that list. Those people become part of yourcore circle, especiallyfor me, being youngerand havingtogrow up alittle earlier.
Youstarted Techflow, a platform for youth conversation and collaboration on technology, atthe age ofjust 14 How did thatcome about? Tech Flowwasaboutconversation. My friends and I were concerned about how technologywasgoing toaffectour future careers, but noone weknewwasreally talking about it.
Myfriend and I,whoboth loved and understoodtechnologyand had strong STEM backgrounds, thoughtwecould use ourskillstoaddress that lackof conversation bycreatingTechFlow.
Weproducedcontentabout new technologiesand howtheycouldaffect young people, and we also covered technologyeventsaround Australia, sharinginformationforGeneration Z. That conversationeventuallygrewto involve tens ofthousandsofteenagers worldwide.
What's the biggest challenge you've faced in buildingYuva towhat it is today?
At the start itwasvery difficult, because I'd be pitching topeople with kidsmyage. Thereweretimeswhen people wouldsay to me "I thoughtyouwerethe intern", or "I've got a team ofpeoplewith PhDs, whyshould I askyou tohelpus?"
I'd beon Linkedln messaging hundreds and hundredsofpeoplewith specialised messages, and maybeonly 10%wouldeven reply.
Butyouhave to put in all thatworkfrom the start: identifywhat is required and the differentavenuesyou can take toget there, whetherit'supskillingyourself, buildinga tean1,orsomethingelse. It'sa processof constant iteration.
Youjust need toget that firstwin, get thatfirstperson to sayyes. And once Igot
thatwin, havingputinall the hard workup front, itwas a lot more satisfying.
You have had a non-traditional career pathforsomeone ofan Asian background, havinggone straightinto thestart-up sector after highschool. Talk to me about thatleap
It's ultin1atelya balance betweenself-belief and beingable to showresults.
StartingearlywithTechFlowgave me self-belief, itallowed me to see awhole differentworld ofpeople whowereableto build a successful business inthe sector. I thought, "Ifthey cando it,whycan't I?"
But I also had to proveitwith results. I had tomakewhatevervision I had for Yuva AJ a reality. And I was lucky to have numerous mentors, includingfa1nily support, thathelped meget the results, makethe rightbusiness decisions and push n1e intherightdirection.
Howdoyou 1nanage beingresponsible not onlyforyourselfbut three employees at the age of20?
As scaryas itis, itgivesyouadditional motivation to get results. We need to n1ake sure costs don't blow out ofproportion, thateveryoneis accountable fortheir roles, and thatwe achieve the milestoneswe need tohit.
Ifyou treat people the wayyou would like to be treated, and bring the111 along for thejourney, that open and honestculture getsyouthroughthe tougher moments.
What'snextforYuvaAl and foryou?
Growth. We're one ofthe pren1ierplayers in theworld now, sowe have somegood custon1erson board and now the focusis on growth.
I'm in initial talkswith my mentors trying to figure outour next milestones, including whetherwe bringon external capital to achieve them.
Anywordsofwisdom for youngAsian Australian entrepreneurs?
l'm ina highly techruca1field but time and againwhathas drivenmysuccesssofar is understandingpeople and the idea of empathy.
eAsan AsianAustralian in STEM, you'll likelyhave a stronghard skill, whetherits engineering, science, maths orsomething else. But it allcon1es back tosolving problemsforpeople: ifyou understand a person better, youwill designa solution that's betterfortheirproblem.

Your questions about work and vaccinations, answered by ABHA DEVASIA
Canmye1nployerforcemetoget vaccinated?
The simple answerisno. Themorerealistic answer is, itdepends. Anen1ployercannot forceyoutohave aCOVID-19vaccine. The Federal Government'spolicyisthat vaccinesarevoluntaryand free, butthe Prime Ministerhasannounced thatit isup to employersto detern1ine whethervaccines shouldbe compulsory. So, dependingon youre1nploy1nentcircumstances, orwhere you live,youre1nployer1nay have the right toasktogetvaccinated.
They maybecon1pulsoryifyourstatehas publichealthorders inplace that required you tobe vaccinated ifyouare employed in an industrysuch as aged care, construction, orhealthcare.
()
Somecompanies like Qantasairlineshave a..___._ .....,_,_ said that theywillrequire employees to be vaccinated before theycancommencework.
Anti-discrinunationlawsinAustralia protectpeoplewith certain attributes from beingtreated lessfavourably, including health andphysicalattributes. Ifyouhave an existingillness, injuryorcondition thatpreventsyoufrom takingthevaccine, and the employernevertheless insists thatyoubevaccinated, thisconductmay bediscritninatory againstyou. Ifthis is thecase, the etnployermustprovide alternativeworkingarrangements toenable the employee tocontinueworkingsuch asworkingfromhomeormakeother adjustmentsattheworkplace.
lfyouremployerdecideson amandatory vaccinationrequirementforitsemployees, it1nust talkto itsemployeesaboutitfirst, about theemployee'scircumstancesand the particularconditionsattheirworkplace. An employer's failuretodoso maybe abreach ofhealth and safetylaws.
Ifanemployeedecidesnottocomply with anemployer'sreasonableandlawful direction, itmayresultinjeopardisingtheir employment. You maywantto talkto a trusted colleague, yourunionoralawyer whenconsideringthis option toobtainsome

WhataremyrightsifIneedtotake timeofftogetthejab?WhatifIfeel unwellafter?
Everyfull time andpart time employee inAustralia, otherthancasualworkers, areentitledtopersonalleave (upto 10 dayseveryyear) iftheyaresickorunwell. However, thisentitlementis notavailableto gogetthe vaccination.
Someworkplaces areoffering2 hours paidleavetogetthevaccination. Other
employersareofferingdifferent start and finish times to facilitateyoutaking time togetthe vaccine. Youshould speakwith youremployerabout whatentitlements are available toyou.
Ifyou have already received the vaccination, checkwithyouremployerifyou areentitled to have leave for the relevant period.
Ifyoufeel unwell afterwardsand ca11not attend work, youareentitled to take aday offaspersonal leave orsickday. lfyou requit-e a n1edicalcertificate then ren1ember thatyou canaskapharn, acistto issueyou withone, although there maybe acharge forone. lfyouhave run outofpersonal leave, then speaktoyouremployer asthey maymake specialarrangementsfor extra sickleaveforaftereffectsofthe vaccine.

Ifthere arepublichealthorders inplace thatrequiree1nployees tobevaccinated beforethey canwork, en1ployerscan ask youforevidence astowhyyou have an exen1ption. Can I refusetoworkwithunvaccinated people?
It is unlikelythat aworkercan refuseto attend the workplace because aco-worker is unvaccinated unless thevaccination is mandatory underlaw, such as in a public health order.
However, youremployerhas a dutyunder work health andsafety laws in each state to elin1inate the risk to the health and safety ofworkers theyen1ploy, aspracticallyas possible. This 1neans that employersmust ensurethatthereare sufficientmeasuresin place at the workplacekeepyou andother workers safe.
Ifyoufeel unsafe at work, you have the right toceasework foryourown health and safetyand thoseofotherworkers. This is an entitlementunderthe workplace health and safety acts in eachstate. To do this, the workermustitnmediatelyinfonntheir supervisor thatthey have decidedto doso and be available todo anotheralternative

WhatifIamvaccinatedbutlivewith unvaccinatedpeople?Willthataffectmy position?
Evenifyouare vaccinated, youcan transmit thevirusto othersatyourworkplace if yourhouse mates are unvaccinatedand infectious. Whetheryoudisclosethis informationwill dependon thelegal requiren1entsthat 1nayapplytoyour employment and how much youare required todisclose. Ifyou areengaged in thehealthcare sector, yourrequirementto disclosethismaybea part ofyourduties to the e111ployer to control and managethe riskofinfection. Ifyou areemployedin warehousingor the ITsector, thjs maynot be required.
If I amwaitingforavaccinethathasn't beenintroducedinAustralia,whatare myoptions?
All thevaccinationshavethesame level ofapproval from theTherapeuticGoods Administration(TOA),thebodyresponsible forthe approvalof1nedicinesinAustralia. Ifyou1·en1ployerrequiresallemployeesto bevaccinated byaparticula1·date,youmay need1nedicalevidenceastowhyavaccine otherthanthosecurrentlyavailableisthe

I'mabouttogoforajobinterview
Will I beaskedif1'01vaccinated?Can I ask ifemployeesatthecompanyare vaccinated?
Dependingon the type ofjob thatyouare applyingfor, anemployermayhavetheright to askwhetheryouhavebeenvaccinated for example,a sectorthat requiresvaccinations suchas airlines. Ifyou are asked the question, you have the rightto askwhythey need toknowthis information.
Forthesereasons, thecompanyn1ayalso not tellyou ifspecificpeople workingwith youhavebeenvaccinated, butcan tellyou ifthere is apolicyat theworkplace that all employees arevaccinated.
Will I beunemployedifI can'tget thevaccineforhealthreasonsand vaccinationismandatoryinall professions?
There isn't ayes or no answer to this question. Ifyou have a health condition that does not permityou to have the vaccination, you maybe protected by anti-discrimination laws. Refusingyou the opportunityto perforn1 a role or be considered foremploymentmaybe grounds fordiscrimination againstyou. In these circumstances, you should eitherapproachyour union orspeak tosolicitorstoprovideyouwithmore specific advice.
Whatconstitutesareligiousobjectionto thevaccineandhowcanthisexemption beproven?
Thereareveryliinitedgrounds onwhichto do thisandwouldrequire, atthe veryleast, specificrestrictions and official statements issuedbyreligiousleaders thatthe vaccine is prohibited in theirreligion.
Further, the religionwill alsohave to be a registered establishedreHgionto warrant thlsconsideration. Australian courts have traditionally beenreluctantto 1nakefindings such as these and itwouldbedeterminedon a case-by-case basis.
Protectionagainstdiscrimination on the basis ofreligiousgroundsare available inthe ACT, NT, Queensland,Tasmania, Victoria, and WesternAustralia. The circumstancesofeachcasewiUdetennine whetherthereisanyprotectionavailable in thecourts.

An academic chair in Ayurveda, the ancient Indianhealthscience, has been announced at the Western Sydney University
BY DRRAJKUMAR SHARMA
yurvedaisan Indian term thatthe westernworldisfinallybeginning topickup. ASanskritterm made upoftherootwordsAyur(life) and Veda(scienceorknowledge), it stands tortheScienceofLife, andisabodyof knowledge abouthealthandwellbeing.
Forapractitionerand teacherof Ayurveda of40 years, itis asourceofgreat satisfaction for 1ne tosee that non-lndian conununitiesare lookingtoitas agentler wayoftreatingdiseases.
In anapplaudableeffort, the Government ofIndia'sAYUSH Ministryhas sought recentlytopropagate the researchand study ofAyurveda.

Interestingly, theWSU announcement has aninterestingparallelwiththevery origins ofthisancientsystemofmedicine.
Ayurveda originated afewthousandyeaxs ago in Indiawhen people beganlivingin con11nunitiesand took to farming (organic ofcourse), includingpoultry, dairy, trading ofgrains, legu1nes, and animal food. That changed lifestyle heralded the emergence ofdiseasesthusfarunknown. Toseek out asolution fortheirincreasinghealth problems, the learned sages ofthatera gathered in theHimalayasina conference ofsorts. The solutionthatcameout, was Ayurveda. Thereis documented reference to this meetingofthelearnedminds ina classiconAyurveda, the CharakSamhita, consideredas the Bible ofAyurveda.
We findthatin the presentera, the lifestyle has tre1nendouslychangedyet
Shankhpushpi
again, and alonglistofseriouslifestyleand autoimmune diseaseslikeheartattack, brain stroke, cancers, diabetes, thyroiddisorders, dementia, etc. havepoppedup. In this devastatinghealth scenario, there isagreater roleand importanceofAyurveda toprovide solutionstothesediseases.
As a healthcaresystem,Ayurveda looks atthe disease andits treatmentfroma holisticviewpoint. Diseaseisconsidered largelyasstemming from unhealthyfood and lifestyle. Consequently, theremediesadvised are thecorrection ofthe unhealthyfood and lifestyleresponsible fordiseases. Elaborate inforn1ationislistedin Ayurveda about differentfoods and their healthbenefits. lt prescribesidealfoods to beconsumed bydifferentbody types,as wellas indiverseseasons, forbetterhealth. For the im1nediate treatment ofdiseases, Ayurvedaexplainsthehealthbenefitsof around 500plantsofmedicinal importance. Itn1ightbeinterestingforyoutolearn
Ayurvedic herbsgrowing wildinAustralia that manycommonlyused medicines have herbal origins. Asprin isderived from the herb willowbark(Salixalba). Reserpine,an alkaloid forhigh bloodpressure, comes from the plant Indianscallsarpgandha(Rouvolfia serpentine). Digoxin, adrugforheart failure, isderived from theplant Digitalis, andthe expectorantbromhexine isderived fromthe plantAdusaorAdhatodavasica.
Detoxification and rejuvenationof thebody is one ofthe core principlesof treatmentin this medicalscience. Fiveways ofdoingthisare prescribed, called Panchkarma where Panc/1 meansfive andKarma standsforprocedures.
BushwalkinginNSW, Ihavecome across dozensofAyurvedicmedicinalplantsgrowing wild.ThesehaveincludedBhuniia,nla (Phylanthusnuntri), Gokshru(Tribulus terristris), Punarnava(Boerheviadiffusa), Shankhpushpi(Convolvulusprostrates),and Pitpapra(Fumariapalvijlora).Theseareuseful fortreatingviralinfections,prostategland
enlargement, kidneydiseases, forgetfulness, and fattyliverrespectively.Theseplantswhich mightwell beconsideredweedshere inAustralia-havegreatdemand inAyurveda andthephytopharmaindustry.
Thespecific medicinalpropertiesifthese andother herbscome notonly from the ancient texts,butalsofro1n modern-day evidence-basedresearchongoing inAyurveda universities andinstitutesin India. Based on thesestudies, Ayurvedicmedicinesare manufacturedfollowingGood Manufacturing Practice (GMP) norms. Collaborative researchwith thewesternworld will surely be astep forward in thisdirection in the wellnesssector. ltwillalsosolvesomeofthe misconceptionsregardingthe useofmetalsin Ayurvedaexaggeratedlytalked aboutbythe modern pharma industry.
Themodernwesternsystemofmedicine hasindeeddonemarvelsin thefieldof surgicaln1anagementandemergency medicine. However, theincidenceoflifostyle and autoimmunediseasesisfastincreasing. Theironyisthatresearchinthepharma industryiscommercial, andthenewmolecules discovered areprescribedtorlife.Thisputsa greatburdenonsocietiesandgovernments. TheAyurvedicapproachforthetreatnJentand managementofdiseases, ontheotherhand,is holistic, andfocusesonlifestyleaswellas food habitcorrection, andgreenmedicine.
Inthechangingscenarioconcerning health, whentheworld isincreasingly consideringplant-based, paleo,gluten-free andlectins-free diets, thereisagreat role forAyurveda toplaytoprovide health and wellnesstmoughholisticmedicine.
WSU'sfirststep in embracingAyurveda must beapplauded: itsuggests that complimentary medicinesand alternative practices do have aplace inhealthcare today, and can intersectsuccessfullywith westernmedicine.

Tips to inculcate a love of books in your little one
parentsdo that?
BY NEHAJAIN
helove for readingwasinstilled in me at ayoungage. Evennow, abookhas the powerto truly envelop mein itsworld. And so itwas ano-brainerformetowant to raise areaderwhen J hadn1yown child, andtoinstil alove forreading.
Readinghelpsyoungchildren's developmentin 1nanyways. Ithelps to sparkimagination, stimulatecuriosity, help then1 learn and build associationsabout the world, understand ourownandother cultures, anddevelopearlyliteracy skills.
Thereisampleresearch also to show thatwhen fa111ilieswith children0-8 share a routineofreading, itfosters healthybrain development, healthy relationships, alove ofreading, and the literacyskills critical for school success.
Sohowdowe asfamiliescreateashared love ofreading, especiallyintimesofscreenoverload? Hereare3 tips thatyou can start implementingrightnow.
Start reading with/to your children from when they are born
Thereis aco1nmonmisconceptionamongst parents that theyshouldwaituntil a childcansitup/talkbefore they should be readingorread to. Newborns benefit fro1ntheexperience of hearingstories that arelive, inpersonand directed at them. Research hasshown that the numberofwords an infantis exposed tohas a directimpactonlanguage development and literacy. Soas an example, ifyouwould likeyourchild to be proficient in theirfamilylanguage,
start readingthembooks, anybooksfrom yourfamilylanguage.Asyourbabystarts togrowandisread to, theytakeitallin: vocabulary and languagestructure, numbers and mathconcepts,colou1·s,shapes, animals, opposites, and all kindsofuseful informationabout howthe worldworks. So from the perspective ofa childwhoisgoing to be multilingual, thisiscritical.
Whenmychild\vasborn, oneofthe storiesthatwasread dailyto mychildwas "goodnight moon" andwewould read it in Punjabi/Hindi/Tamil. When mychildbegan to speak, theyknewall thewordstothe bookin all the languages and could recite themindependently.
Be a role model for your child
Whenyou readbooksyourself, youare modellingthat readingisanenjoyable activity. Youcould say"Thisis Mummy's book.ThisoneisBaby'sbook." Just by lookingatbookswithyourchildand talking about them, you can beagoodmodel for usinglanguage and books.
Yourchild willlearnbywatchingyou hold a book therightway and seeinghow you move throughit bygently turning the pages. Also, readingwith/to yourchildren createsanemotiveconnectionwithyour childas well asa positive association withbooks thatwilllasta lifetime.
Theothercriticalcomponentisto create anengagingexperience that 1nakesyourchildwantto read, especiallyinaworldthatis fullof visualandauditorydistractions. So howcanweas
■ Usedifferent tones/voiceswhen reading toyourchildrento bringthe book, its world and characters tolife, thereby engagingthechildemotionally, e.g. using an ogrevoice.
■ Read books thatallowforchildren's involvementwithinthe books, for example books thathavewords that rhyme 01· predictivetext.
■ Whenchildrenareyoung,readbooksthat havecolourfulandaestheticallypleasing illustrationstokeep themengaged.
Immerse yourchild in a world of books
Ensure thatyourchild is surrounded bybooks. Exposethe1n toan arrayof characters, stories, factsand information. Forslightlyolderkids, a funpractice is to get them tochoose theirown bookonce a month orso on the supern1arket run. Ifyoudon'twant to buybooks, libraries are agreatplace tosurroundyourchildwith books. Nowadays, there'salso audio books thatallowyour childrento listen to stories/ encyclopaediasetc.
Visityour local councillibrary frequently - theytypicallyhold 1nany book-related eventsdesignedforkids ofvaryingages. Forparentslike uswhoare raising multilingual and children who are diverse, it'sgreatto have books around thatfeature thelanguages thatyouwant themtobe exposed to, as well ascharacters thatlook likeyourchildren. Exposingchildren to diversityin bookswill preparethemforlife ina diverseworld. Personally, I have seen how impactfulthishas been. Just before Janmashtamithisyear, I bought astorybook thatexplained the festival. Mychild simply loves the book - it has builtson1egreat associations and understandingofthe festivalintheir mind.
Implement some ofthesetipsinyour children's lives andwatchhowthey create a loveforreading.
