PJ Thompson, Executive Director Alumni Association

The Academic Procession
The academic regalia, which adds interest and color to the Commencement procession, is as old in history as are universities—that is, more than eight hundred years old. The academic hood, which is worn as an adornment today, served a practical purpose in days of unheated classrooms and cold sleeping quarters.
During the traditional academic procession, the gown and hood indicate the degree held by the wearer or the one about to be received. The hood is lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree. Graduates of certain institutions wear gowns in the color of the university. The doctoral gown is faced down the front with velvet panels and has three velvet crossbars on each sleeve. The velvet may be black or may be the color which represents the field in which the degree was conferred.
Since the degrees earned by the faculty of Indiana State University represent many colleges and universities in the United States and abroad, with a wide range of degree fields, the variety of attire forms a bright and colorful pattern.
The Commencement processional of faculty symbolizes recognition for their contributions to the University through awards, faculty rank, and years of service. It begins with full professors/librarians, followed by associate professors/associate librarians, assistant professors/assistant librarians, and ends with instructors, each group arranged according to their years of service.

Commencement Mace
A Commencement mace has been carried in every Commencement ceremony since 1966. The original mace was a gift to Professor Caleb Mills, State Superintendent of Public Instruction in Indiana from 1854-1857. Mills, who earned the title of “Father of Public Education,” was instrumental in the establishment of Indiana State Normal School—now Indiana State University. The original mace was actually a walking cane decorated with blue and white silk ribbons representing the school’s colors.
The original mace was replaced in 2010. A new mace was designed and produced by Mark Joseph Clauss, mechanical technologist and lecturer in Indiana State University’s Bailey College of Engineering and Technology. The mace is made of cherry hardwood with a replica of the University’s Presidents Medallion embedded at the top. The medallion is a four-inch gold medal with 36 blue sapphire gemstones and the official University seal at the center.
Scholarship Honors
Those students graduating with a scholarship index of 3.90 or higher will be graduated Summa Cum Laude. Those with a scholarship index between 3.70 and 3.89 will be graduated Magna Cum Laude. Those with a scholarship index between 3.50 and 3.69 will be graduated Cum Laude. Recognition of these special honors will be made in appropriate fashion at the Commencement ceremonies and on the diplomas.

Commencement Speakers
Graduate Ceremony
Dr. Katie Jenner
As Indiana’s first Secretary of Education and the state’s top education official, Dr. Katie Jenner is responsible for establishing a unified, student-centered vision across the full spectrum of education, from K-12 to college.
As one of eight secretaries in Governor Mike Braun’s cabinet, Dr. Jenner oversees eight state agencies and boards which comprise approximately 60% of the state budget, or approximately $26 billion over the biennium. This includes leading the Indiana Department of Education (IDOE) and the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, chairing the State Board of Education (SBOE), and overseeing the Charter School Board, Education Employee Relations Board, Indiana School for the Deaf, Indiana School for the Blind and Visually Impaired, and Indiana State Library.

Undergraduate Ceremony
Lydia Ann Cope
Lydia Cope, from Greenwood, Indiana, is graduating from Indiana State University with degrees in Aviation Management and Cybercriminology and Security Studies with a concentration in Cybercrime. A proud third-generation Sycamore, she has been a dedicated leader and advocate throughout her time at Indiana State University.

Cope served as a peer coach with the Student Success Center, an events assistant at Cunningham Memorial Library, and an Orientation and Blue Team Leader for New Student Orientation. She founded and led the Crochet Club and was a four-year member of Alpha Sigma Alpha, holding leadership roles including Ritual and Housing Chair and Education Director. She was also first runner-up in the Miss Indiana State University Pageant, advocating for human trafficking awareness.
Under Secretary Jenner’s leadership, the state of Indiana and local schools have celebrated a number of successes in K-12 education, including:
• Literacy rates increasing for four consecutive years, including the largest-ever single-year increase in 2025;
• Chronic absenteeism rates improving for three consecutive years;
• The unanimous adoption of new high school diploma requirements that allow increased flexibility for students to personalize their journey;
• The highest Indiana high school graduation rate on record;
• Creating a comprehensive teacher supply and demand marketplace, matching educators with open positions and recruiting new teachers to the profession; and
• Transparently measuring school and student outcomes that matter most for parents, families, and educators with the Indiana GPS Dashboard.
A former teacher, district leader, and higher education vice president, Dr. Jenner earned her MBA in Educational Leadership in Summer 2017. She lives in Madison, Indiana, with her husband and twin daughters.
Professionally, Cope gained experience as a student intern with the Human Trafficking Intelligence Unit and OUR Intelligence Unit, analyzing digital threat patterns and supporting cybercrime prevention. She also studied abroad at Edge Hill University in the United Kingdom, where she explored international cyber policy and made lasting memories with friends. Cope’s achievements have been recognized through the Myrl O. Wilkinson Scholarship, the Thelma F. Mills Award, and the Hildegard Pang Library Scholarship.
After graduation, Cope will begin her career as a research analyst for the Indiana State Department and plans to attend the Indiana University McKinney School of Law. She is grateful for the support of her parents, her friends, the Indiana State University faculty and staff, and the Lord’s guidance throughout her journey.

National Anthem
Oh! say, can you see, by the dawn’s early light, What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, thro’ the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof thro’ the night that our flag was still there.
Oh! say, does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
Alma Mater
Out upon the swelling breezes, let our voices ring As to thee, our Alma Mater, heartfelt praise we sing.
Though the years to come may part us, Friends and comrades true, ISU, our Alma Mater, here’s our pledge to you.
