Our Heritage Indiana State University was founded in 1865 as a normal school to prepare the state’s teachers. Indiana State is a doctoral/research university with a history of serving a diverse student body. The University’s strong commitment to service learning has earned it the Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching. Indiana State offers more than 180 major/minor options in five colleges, and its commitment to experiential learning helps prepare its graduates for success in their careers.

The Academic Procession The academic regalia, which adds interest and color to the Commencement procession, is as old in history as are universities—that is, more than eight hundred years old. The academic hood, which is worn as an adornment today, served a practical purpose in days of unheated classrooms and cold sleeping quarters.

During the traditional academic procession, the gown and hood indicate the degree held by the wearer or the one about to be received. The hood is lined with the official color or colors of the college or university conferring the degree. Graduates of certain institutions wear gowns in the color of the university. The doctoral gown is faced down the front with velvet panels and has three velvet crossbars on each sleeve. The velvet may be black or may be the color which represents the field in which the degree was conferred. Since the degrees earned by the faculty of Indiana State University represent many colleges and universities in the United States and abroad, with a wide range of degree fields, the variety of attire forms a bright and colorful pattern. The Commencement processional of faculty symbolizes recognition for their contributions to the University through awards, faculty rank, and years of service. It begins with full professors/librarians, followed by associate professors/associate librarians, assistant professors/assistant librarians, and ends with instructors, each group arranged according to their years of service.

Commencement Attire Doctoral Degree Doctoral candidates and graduates from Indiana State University wear blue robes with black velvet facing down the front and three crossbars of the same color on the bell-shaped sleeves. Hoods are blue, lined with blue satin with white satin chevrons and are edged with velvet trim in colors related to the discipline. Doctor of Athletic Training—Sage green Doctor of Health Science—Hunter green Doctor of Nursing Practice—Apricot Doctor of Philosophy—Dark blue Doctor of Physical Therapy—Teal matinee Doctor of Psychology—Gold Candidates may wear a black tam with gold tassel.

Master’s and Advanced Degree Master’s and the Educational Specialist degree hoods for Indiana State University are blue, lined with blue satin with white satin chevrons and are edged with velvet trim in colors related to the discipline.

Undergraduate Degree Indiana State University bachelor’s degree holders or candidates wear a blue gown and a blue mortarboard with a blue and white tassel.

Graduates of the Honors College wear blue hoods, edged in black velvet, lined with blue satin with white satin chevrons.

Commencement Mace

Scholarship Honors Those students graduating with a scholarship index of 3.90 or higher will be graduated Summa Cum Laude. Those with a scholarship index between 3.70 and 3.89 will be graduated Magna Cum Laude. Those with a scholarship index between 3.50 and 3.69 will be graduated Cum Laude. Recognition of these special honors will be made in appropriate fashion at the Commencement ceremonies and on the diplomas.

SPRING 2025 COMMENCEMENT

The original mace was replaced in 2010. A new mace was designed and produced by Mark Joseph Clauss, mechanical technologist and lecturer in Indiana State University’s Bailey College of Engineering and Technology. The mace is made of cherry hardwood with a replica of the University’s Presidents Medallion embedded at the top. The medallion is a four-inch gold medal with 36 blue sapphire gemstones and the official University seal at the center.

A Commencement mace has been carried in every Commencement ceremony since 1966. The original mace was a gift to Professor Caleb Mills, State Superintendent of Public Instruction in Indiana from 1854-1857. Mills, who earned the title of “Father of Public Education,” was instrumental in the establishment of Indiana State Normal School—now Indiana State University. The original mace was actually a walking cane decorated with blue and white silk ribbons representing the school’s colors.

Graduate Commencement Speaker Tamanda Chitalo

At Indiana State, Tamanda completed her clinical internship with Hamilton Center, Inc. in Terre Haute, where she provided individual and family therapy using evidence-based practices. Her dedication, empathy, and skill earned her a prestigious fellowship with Fathers’ Uplift in Boston, Massachusetts, where she was recognized as one of the inaugural fellows.

SPRING 2025 COMMENCEMENT

Tamanda is currently part of the third cohort of the African American Board Leadership Institute, affiliated with the United Way of the Wabash Valley. In addition to her academic and professional commitments, she enjoys reading, traveling, cooking, and attending live music events.

A proud first-generation college student, Tamanda exemplifies resilience, perseverance, and a strong commitment to personal and professional growth. After graduation, she plans to pursue her License in Social Work (LSW) and continue serving individuals and families as a therapist. Her long-term goal is to earn a doctorate and further contribute to the field of social work through leadership and scholarship.

Nick Bement

Fred Crawford built a 30+ year career as a financial executive with deep operational and boardroom exposure within the life and health insurance industry. Fred is a seasoned business leader with a proven track record of leading complex financial, investment, and risk management organizations, including oversight of significant business units.

A native of Terre Haute, Nick Bement is graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Legal Studies with minors in Political Science and Sport Marketing & Revenue Generation from the Honors College at Indiana State University. As an engaged campus leader and Summa Cum Laude graduate, Nick has made a lasting impact on student life through his dedication to service, leadership, and academic excellence.

Fred joined Aflac Incorporated in 2015 as Executive Vice President and CFO, was promoted to President and COO in 2022, and later served as executive advisor before retiring in September 2024. During his tenure, Aflac’s market capitalization more than doubled, and he played a key role in strategic initiatives such as Japan Post’s investment, acquisitions in the U.S., and the expansion of direct-to-consumer offerings. He also oversaw the launch of a corporate venture platform, a reinsurance entity in Bermuda, and a tech hub in Belfast. Fred’s experience spans regulatory and investor relations, with strategic oversight of insurance investment platforms at both Aflac and Lincoln Financial Group. He spent a year in Japan leading market strategies and served on the Board of the American Council of Life Insurers. Prior to Aflac, he held senior financial roles at CNO Financial Group, Lincoln Financial Group, and Bank One Corporation. Fred earned a Bachelor of Science in Business at Indiana State University, and an MBA from the University of Iowa. Fred serves on the Dean’s Advisory Council for the Scott College of Business at Indiana State University. Fred sits on the Board of the University of Iowa Center for Advancement and is an Executive in Residence with the Vaughan Institute of Risk Management and Insurance at the University of Iowa.

During his time at Indiana State, Nick served as the President of the Student Government Association (SGA) for the 2023–2024 academic year, where he focused on advancing student success initiatives and promoting mental health awareness across campus. He also served as the President of The Pi Kappa Alpha Fraternity in 2024 and was honored with the Fraternity and Sorority Life Legacy Medal of Distinction for his outstanding leadership and contributions to the campus community. Nick completed several internships during his undergraduate career, including a summer in Washington, D.C., where he worked for then–U.S. Senator and current Indiana Governor Mike Braun. These experiences, combined with his academic training, have fueled his passion for public service and the law. After graduation, he will attend the Indiana University Maurer School of Law in Bloomington, Indiana. A proud and faithful Christian, Nick gives all glory to his Savior and credits his faith as a guiding force in his journey. He is deeply grateful for the experiences, friendships, and opportunities he found at Indiana State and looks forward to beginning his next chapter as an engaged and loyal alumnus.
