As we work to create an inclusive and welcoming theatre, we must consider the many legacies of displacement, migration, violence, and settlement that bring us together at our Theatre. What we now call central Indiana is on the ancestral lands of many indigenous peoples, including the Miami, Piankashaw, Wea, Potawatomi, Kickapoo, Delaware, and Shawnee. We pay respect to their elders, both past and present. The Indiana Theatre, where we now produce, was originally built as a segregated movie house in the 1920s. While many of us do not recall this time, the history of that segregation must be named as we invite our whole community into our theatre.

IRT LEADERSHIP BENJAMIN HANNA

SUZANNE SWEENEY

Ben is in his fourth season as IRT’s Margot Lacy Eccles Artistic Director, following six years as the company’s Associate Artistic Director. At IRT he has directed The Play That Goes Wrong, Little Shop of Horrors, Clue, Fahrenheit 451, The Book Club Play, A Christmas Carol, and Elephant & Piggie’s “We Are in a Play!,” among others. This season he directs The Da Vinci Code.

Suzanne is a 28-year veteran of the IRT and leads with Benjamin Hanna as co-CEO of the company, where she oversees its administrative functions. During her tenure, the IRT has raised $20 million for its Front and Center campaign and another $5 million for the renaming of the Upperstage Theatre to the Janet Allen Stage, renovated the Upperstage Lobby and restrooms as well as the Artistic Administration offices, and secured a long-term lease for the building with the City of Indianapolis.

As a director, educator, and community engagement specialist, Ben is guided by the belief that access to high-quality theatre helps build creative, empathetic people and healthy communities. Across his career, he has focused on building the next generation of artists and audiences by creating and advocating for multigenerational, multicultural, and family-oriented programming. Prior to his role at IRT, he spent five years at Berkeley Repertory Theatre and directed shows at the Bay Area Children’s Theatre. In his native Minnesota, he served on the education staff of Penumbra Theatre Company and was an artistic associate at Children’s Theatre Company. He is the recipient of the prestigious Theatre Communications Group Leadership University Award funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and is a graduate of the Stanley K. Lacy Leadership Program—Class XLVI. Ben holds a degree in theatre arts from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. He fell in love with telling stories at the age of eleven at the Prairie Wind Players community theatre in rural Minnesota, and he continues to create for his favorite audience: his five nieces and nephews.

Suzanne was elected Treasurer of the National League of Resident Theatres, where she serves as a board member. She has been a three-time panelist for Shakespeare in American Communities in cooperation with Arts Midwest. She was the treasurer of Irish Fest for nine years, a member of the board of directors and treasurer of the Day Nursery Association (now Early Learning Indiana) for three years, and treasurer of IndyFringe. Suzanne is a graduate of the College of William & Mary and Indiana University. She has worked in finance in Washington, DC; Texas; Germany; Hawaii; and New Zealand. She is an alum of the Stanley K. Lacy Leadership Program (Class XXXI). She lives in Lockerbie and spends some of her downtime in Huntley, Illinois, with her partner, Todd Wiencek.

DEAR AUDIENCES, Thank you for joining us as we launch our 54th season with The Da Vinci Code! We could not imagine a more thrilling way to begin.

In its stage adaptation, The Da Vinci Code brings to life the famous landmarks and culture of the best-selling novel and blockbuster film. IRT’s historic theatre is the perfect setting for building the ingredients of a great mystery: ancient history, questions of faith, murder, technology, art, and a race against time. It is a big, exhilarating story, and we are delighted to share it with you. This production also marks the beginning of three exciting co-productions this season, allowing artists and artistry created right here in Indianapolis to reach audiences around the country. In January, The Da Vinci Code heads to Cleveland Play House. Our fall production of Kim’s Convenience continues that spirit of collaboration in a three-city production (or a “tri-pro”, as we call it) with Everyman Theatre in Baltimore and Portland Center Stage in Portland, Oregon. Directed by our Associate Artistic Director, cara hinh, this warm family comedy (with a Netflix sitcom of the same name!) reminds us that home can be the place where our buttons are pushed the most, but it’s also the place where we are best known. As the weather chills, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol returns, and we are thrilled to welcome back many treasured local actors and introduce audiences to a few new carolers. It’s always a joy to fill our stage with snow, spirits, music, and the familiar faces that make this Indianapolis tradition feel like coming home. In January, we’ll present the 2026 Pulitzer Prize-winning Purpose, a dynamic new play about a prominent Black family whose public ideals collide with private ambitions. We are proud to co-produce this timely work about loyalty and legacy with Cincinnati Playhouse in the Park. Make way for the March sisters in Spring. Jo, Meg, Beth, and Amy come to IRT in Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women. This cherished novel has remained so because of its generous heart: four sisters dreaming boldly, arguing passionately, loving fiercely, and discovering who they might become. Finally, we will close the season with the Golden Age musical classic, Guys and Dolls. Romance, gamblers, showgirls, and irresistible music will send us into summer with a celebration of the great American musical. Across all six productions, we continue our commitment to telling a spectrum of stories for the wonderfully varied communities we serve. We hope you will make this season your own. Bring a friend. SECRET-KEEPING IN THE INFORMATION AGE: A LOST ART? by Claire Wilcher, Education & Artistic Associate “Everything that has happened tonight, someone has been watching it all.” The words that Captain Bezu Fache utters to his colleague in The Da Vinci Code may not seem like an obvious theme of this globally known story. Of the tens of millions of readers of Dan Brown’s 2003 novel, many would easily cite the evident concepts: Faith vs dogma, the divine feminine, legends and lineage... all topics that have been studied by critics, scholars, and consumers alike. Of course, these themes still exist in the stage adaptation created by Wagstaff and Abel in 2024, but condensing 454 pages of a massive cultural zeitgeist into a two-act stage play is a puzzle that Robert Langdon himself would struggle to solve. And so, the IRT’s production of The Da Vinci Code takes you on a treasure hunt of ancient legends and art history with a fresh take that brings this early 2000s blockbuster into the information overwhelm of 2026: when everyone has access to information, how and why do we keep the most important secrets? Everyone has a tiny computer in their pocket these days. Our constant access to immediate information often leaves little room for the process of discovery. Even the characters in The Da Vinci Code are not above a shortcut: SOPHIE. (into her phone) Alexander Pope, a knight interred. LANGDON. You’re asking Siri?!

While French police officers Fache and Collet track their suspects via GPS, they can also tap into the cameras at the Louvre. Silas, who hunts for the treasure himself, sends a cell phone video to his revered “Teacher.” Across Europe, characters in The Da Vinci Code leave their mark on screens, search engines, texts, voicemails. Everyone has access to the internet. So why don’t they just Google the big secret? For that matter, why not boil down all 105 chapters of the novel with one clever social media post? Perhaps the answer lies in the shared human experience of memory, belonging, and an immense wish for privacy amid information overload. Sophie’s most useful tool isn’t her phone–it’s the memory of her grandfather. Langdon’s is his enthusiasm for history and the mysteries therein. Psychological author YKY Sadek says, “When every move is under surveillance, the real revolution occurs in the mind.” When we think beyond what we are shown on a screen and tap into past experiences rather than GPS trackers, we can fully engage with the puzzles and secrets we seek to understand. This desire for secret-keeping could also explain the continued appeal of The Da Vinci Code. The play’s director, Benjamin Hanna, muses, “The technological advances of the last 23 years since the novel was released are awe-inspiring, yet alarming. Our jewelry tells us our heartrate and sleep quality, our phones show us who is at the front door from 3,000 miles away. Dare we, as trackable as we all are, dream of anonymity? Is being trusted with a secret the last great achievement in privacy?” If you ask me, a secret society of artists and scientists who love puzzles sounds pretty darn fun these days. 13

BENJAMIN HANNA | Director Benjamin Hanna is beginning his fourth season as the IRT’s Margot Lacy Eccles Artistic Director, after six years as associate artistic director. He has previously worked with Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Children’s Theatre Company, Penumbra Theatre, Seattle Children’s Theatre, Steppingstone Theatre, and the Bay Area Children’s Theatre. THE COMPANY ROB JOHANSEN | Fight Choreographer Rob has been a fight choreographer for 28 years, which matches the number of Romeo and Juliet’s he has choreographed! He is in NO RUSH to get to 30. Rob’s favorite genre to choreograph is comedy. Some of his most treasured choreography occurred on the IRT stage, including The 39 Steps, The Miracle Worker, Boeing Boeing and his most treasuredThe Game’s Afoot (where he got to carry around his wife, Jen for an hour...she plays a really great dead body!). Rob is a passionate worker at the Indianapolis Humane Society. If you are looking for a pup, please rescue one from a shelter. CLAIRE WILCHER (she/her) | Dramaturgy & Intimacy IRT stage credits: Dennis/Perkins in The Play That Goes Wrong, Brittany/Alice in The Folks at Home, Mrs. Peacock in Clue, and Granny in Town Mouse, Country Mouse. Claire works full-time as the Education & Artistic Associate and serves as the resident intimacy consultant for both the IRT and Summer Stock Stage. Claire holds an MFA from Michigan State University in Acting, with specializations in pedagogy, intimacy direction, and body politics and intersectionality in theatre. She is a certified intimacy director through IDC Professionals.

MARIEL GREENLEE (she/her) | Movement Mariel Greenlee, from Vestal, NY, performed professionally with Dance Kaleidoscope for 15 years, then served on their board for the following six years. She continues her work in dance as a freelance choreographer and teaching artist. She has choreographed more than 100 professional works locally and regionally. She has been awarded grants and recognition from both the Indy Arts Council and Indiana Arts Commission. She currently serves on the boards of the IAEN and Indianapolis Ballet. She is the founder of The Indy Dance Council, dedicated to lifting up the footprint of dance in Central Indiana. JULIA GUICHARD (she/her) | Dialect Coach Julia Guichard is professor of theatre and associate dean of the College of Creative Arts at Miami University. She holds a BFA from DePaul and an MFA from Penn State and is certified in the Alexander Technique through Alexander Technique International. She has worked as a dialect coach for the Cincinnati Playhouse, Cincinnati Shakespeare Company, the KNOW Theatre, and Ensemble Theatre. She is delighted to return to IRT where previous credits include The Play That Goes Wrong and The 39 Steps.

ERIN ROBSON-SMITH (she/her) | Stage Manager Since moving to Indianapolis, Erin has had the pleasure of working with IRT and its incredible staff. Favorite local and regional productions include A Christmas Carol and The Paper Dreams of Harry Chin, with the IRT; The Hotel Nepenthe and Love Bird with Phoenix Theatre; The Convent with Summit Performance; Julius Caesar with Indy Shakes; The Magnificent Fall with JoJo TomBilBen; Sometimes a Great Notion with Portland Center Stage. Erin spent the summers of 2008 and 2009 working with the JAW Festival at Portland Center Stage, and in 2024 stage managed for New Harmony Project’s inaugural PlayFest Indy. 18
