As we work to create an inclusive and welcoming theatre, we must consider the many legacies of displacement, migration, violence, and settlement that bring us together at our Theatre. What we now call central Indiana is on the ancestral lands of many indigenous peoples, including the Miami, Piankashaw, Wea, Potawatomi, Kickapoo, Delaware, and Shawnee. We pay respect to their elders, both past and present. The Indiana Theatre, where we now produce, was originally built as a segregated movie house in the 1920s. While many of us do not recall this time, the history of that segregation must be named as we invite our whole community into our theatre.

Ben is in his fourth season as IRT’s Margot Lacy Eccles Artistic Director, following six years as the company’s Associate Artistic Director. At IRT he has directed The Play That Goes Wrong, Little Shop of Horrors, Clue, Fahrenheit 451, The Book Club Play, A Christmas Carol, and Elephant & Piggie’s “We Are in a Play!,” among others. This season he directs The Da Vinci Code.
Suzanne is a 28-year veteran of the IRT and leads with Benjamin Hanna as co-CEO of the company, where she oversees its administrative functions. During her tenure, the IRT has raised $20 million for its Front and Center campaign and another $5 million for the renaming of the Upperstage Theatre to the Janet Allen Stage, renovated the Upperstage Lobby and restrooms as well as the Artistic Administration offices, and secured a long-term lease for the building with the City of Indianapolis.
Margot Lacy Eccles Artistic Director
As a director, educator, and community engagement specialist, Ben is guided by the belief that access to high-quality theatre helps build creative, empathetic people and healthy communities. Across his career, he has focused on building the next generation of artists and audiences by creating and advocating for multigenerational, multicultural, and family-oriented programming. Prior to his role at IRT, he spent five years at Berkeley Repertory Theatre and directed shows at the Bay Area Children’s Theatre. In his native Minnesota, he served on the education staff of Penumbra Theatre Company and was an artistic associate at Children’s Theatre Company. He is the recipient of the prestigious Theatre Communications Group Leadership University Award funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and is a graduate of the Stanley K. Lacy Leadership Program—Class XLVI. Ben holds a degree in theatre arts from the University of Minnesota Twin Cities. He fell in love with telling stories at the age of eleven at the Prairie Wind Players community theatre in rural Minnesota, and he continues to create for his favorite audience: his five nieces and nephews.
Managing Director
Suzanne was elected Treasurer of the National League of Resident Theatres, where she serves as a board member. She has been a three-time panelist for Shakespeare in American Communities in cooperation with Arts Midwest. She was the treasurer of Irish Fest for nine years, a member of the board of directors and treasurer of the Day Nursery Association (now Early Learning Indiana) for three years, and treasurer of IndyFringe. Suzanne is a graduate of the College of William & Mary and Indiana University. She has worked in finance in Washington, DC; Texas; Germany; Hawaii; and New Zealand. She is an alum of the Stanley K. Lacy Leadership Program (Class XXXI). She lives in Lockerbie and spends some of her downtime in Huntley, Illinois, with her partner, Todd Wiencek.

A NOTE FROM IRT'S JAMES STILL PLAYWRIGHT-IN-RESIDENCE,
JESSICA HUANG
Hi friends! I’m writing to you from Chicago, on our final day of rehearsal, as the fabulous design team at Timeline Theatre puts the finishing touches on The Birth of the Pill, my newest premiere. We open tomorrow. By the time you read this, this play, which I have been developing for seven years, will have officially met its audience. I am so nervous and so excited. Bringing a new play into being is an act of faith. And trust. And obsession. For me, new plays are born of insomnia. Coffee. Electrolytes. A strange diet of fruit, charcuterie and pickles. Reams of paper. Killed darlings. Late night phone calls. Tequila. Ink cartridges. Early morning phone calls. More reams of paper. The occasional revived darling. A team of trusted advisors. A company of adventurous actors. A very full recycling bin. Together we create something ephemeral and permanent. And then the day after opening, I go home, and the acting company begins the second half of their enterprise—building on the work we did in rehearsal, this time in collaboration with you, our beloved audience. But in this moment before the play’s birth, I feel connected across time and space—to the shared aspirations and anxieties and hopes of other writers in the moments as they near the end of their play’s incubation. I am imagining Ins Choi at the Toronto Fringe Festival, or at Soulpepper Theatre where he was an ensemble member, bringing the remarkable, funny, poignant Kim’s Convenience to life. As you watch his play today, imagine him watching the final light cues…. Imagine him—having also directed the production (how did he do it???) at the Toronto Fringe—offering final notes and adjustments. Imagine the cast (which ALSO included Ins—how did he DO it??) feverishly memorizing the final line changes. Imagine that moment when the play met its first audience, the moment the first time everyone knew how special it was. Making a play is hard. Making a new play is very hard. Making a new play about non-dominant culture, an unfamiliar story, that represents your community… is an act of faith. For me, fortunately, being a Playwright-in-Residence takes a bit of the guesswork out of the equation. Even with this process in Chicago, I’ve been so grateful to continue to have conversations with the artistic minds at IRT, and I’ve been able to consider this new play from the perspective of budgeting, season planning, marketing, education, etc. And speaking of connections, although the premiere and commission for The Birth of the Pill was in Chicago, I also developed it with IRT as part of New Plays Indy presented by The New Harmony Project in 2024. And the wonderful cara hinh, whose work you are about to enjoy, directed a developmental workshop of the play at the Playwrights’ Center in Minneapolis. So here on the eve of opening my new play, speaking across time and space to you, I am celebrating connection—to IRT, and to a new play that premiered in 2011, became a hit tv show and then part of the canon of Asian theater. What a blessing to be in community together. 12
FROM THE DIRECTOR "I am SUCH a Janet” was the first thought I had while reading through the script of Kim’s Convenience. And by that I mean; like a child who always fights with their dad about everything but in a fun and loving kind of way that may not always look fun and may actually involve a lot of screaming but it's because they both love each other and don’t know how to say it in a simple way? Because they both think that getting louder will make their point clearer to others? Because they are two sides of the same coin? Because they are both people who learned to be tough to make it in the world in the careers and lives that they chose? If that made complete sense (or no sense at all to you)—maybe you’ve got a bit of Janet in you too. Whenever anyone asks me, “why do you make art?” the answer always ends up being some kind of version of—for my dad, for my mom, for my sister, my friends...but, ultimately it always just boils down to this: I make art for my family. And by that, I mean, not for them to enjoy; rather, for us to be understood. I want a piece of art that will remind me to be grateful for the journeys that my recent and decadesaway ancestors made, giving up the lives they knew and understood to come to this country. I want a piece of art that will remind me that we all come from messy and complicated people. I want a piece of art that will remind us that the power of storytelling lies in specificity. In cultural details, we still find universality. I know that some of you in the audience may not come from an Asian Immigrant family where language, shame, and culture all clash and mix in the most beautiful ways, but I know that you come from your own messy and complicated people who all tried their best to live and love in the ways that they knew how. I am so proud to be from the people and places that made me who I am. My hope for everyone who sees this show is that after spending some time with the Kim family and the community they serve and love, you can share some of the lessons of care and compassion with your own neighbors. We all need each other to make it through. “Ok, see you!” cara hinh, Associate Artistic Director, and Director of Kim's Convenience 13

TODAY, WE’RE ASKING YOU TO JOIN US AS A FIRST-TIME DONOR AND HELP UNLOCK THE FULL $25,000 CHALLENGE. Your support will help launch a much-needed upgrade to the sound equipment in IRT’s OneAmerica Financial Stage. Since moving into our home in 1980, sound technology has advanced dramatically. Modern equipment will allow audiences to hear every word, every note, and every moment with greater clarity and connection. This challenge match will help initiate the first phase of a larger effort to modernize IRT’s Mainstage sound system. Reaching this goal will allow planning and implementation to begin, with improvements potentially beginning as early as Guys and Dolls in spring 2027. This investment will enhance the experience for all who attend IRT, including thousands of students who participate in our beloved Student Matinee Program each season. From first-time theatergoers to longtime subscribers, everyone deserves the best possible experience.
Be part of the next chapter at Indiana Repertory Theatre. Give today. Turn every $1 into $2.50. Help every story be heard.
