A standing ovation for the arts

Great stories don’t just entertain — they inspire!

OneAmerica Financial ® is proud to stand behind the Indiana Repertory Theatre (IRT), season after season. Our sponsorship is amongst the longest running in community theater nationwide. It’s a legacy rooted in our belief that the arts make our community stronger and better connected.

As the curtain rises on the 2025–2026 season, let’s celebrate IRT’s enduring impact and look forward to another year of imagination and inspiration.

OUR MISSION & VISION

MISSION

Rooted in the heart of Indiana, Indiana Repertory Theatre is committed to building a vital, vibrant, and informed community through the transformational power of live theatre. The Indiana Repertory Theatre produces inclusive, top-quality, professional theatre and community programming to engage, surprise, challenge, and entertain members of the whole community.

VISION

The Indiana Repertory Theatre will welcome the whole community, becoming a place of belonging for an ever-expanding audience of all ages and backgrounds seeking meaningful and enjoyable experiences. Using theatre as a springboard for both personal reflection and community discussion, our productions and programs will inspire our neighbors to learn about themselves and others. As the largest non-profit theatre in the state of Indiana, IRT’s goal is to help make Indiana a dynamic home of cultural expression, economic vitality, and a diverse and engaged citizenry.

SUSTAINING A PROFESSIONAL, RESPECTFUL, INCLUSIVE, & CREATIVE ATMOSPHERE

Producing diverse plays, we strive to provide insight and celebrate human relationships through the unique vision of the playwright. Employing professional artists of the highest quality, we nurture an environment that allows them to grow and thrive on our stages and in our communities.

We foster a creative environment where arts, education, corporate, civic, and cultural organizations collaborate to benefit our community.

INCLUSION & BELONGING

Our community thrives when diverse voices and peoples gather to make, watch, and support theatre.

It is our responsibility as a community resource to open our doors wide, welcoming all to our high-quality, relevant art.

To be an inclusive organization we must seek knowledge and understanding to identify discriminatory practices and increase cultural awareness collaboration with, and learning directly from historically excluded communities.

PRUDENT STEWARDSHIP OF OUR RESOURCES

As a public-benefit organization, we focus on community service, artistic integrity, and creating a range of ticket prices that allow all segments of our community to attend.

Fiscal responsibility and financial security fuel our institutional sustainability. To ensure institutional longevity, we continue to grow our endowment fund as a resource for future development.

Due to union agreements, photography, video, and audio recording are not permitted during the performance. The videotaping of productions is a violation of United States Copyright Law and an actionable Federal Offense.

ACKNOWLEDGING THE LAND

Every community owes its existence and vitality to generations from around the world who contributed their hopes, dreams, and energy to making the history that led to this moment. Some were brought here or removed from here against their will, some were drawn to leave their distant homes in hope of a better life, and some have lived on this land for more generations than can be counted. Acknowledgment of the land which the IRT now occupies is critical to building mutual respect and connection across all barriers of heritage.

We want to acknowledge that what we now call Indiana is on the ancestral lands of many indigenous peoples including the Miami, Piankashaw, Wea, Potawatomi, Kickapoo, Delaware, and Shawnee. We pay respects to their elders past and present. Please take a moment to consider the many legacies of displacement, migration, violence, and settlement that bring us together here today.

This land acknowledgment was created in collaboration with Scott Shoemaker, PhD (Miami Tribe of Oklahoma). Portions of this acknowledgment come from the U.S. Department of Arts and Culture (usdac.us).

ACKNOWLEDGING OUR BUILDING’S HISTORY

The Indiana Repertory Theatre moved to its current site on Washington Street in 1980, renovating and reopening a building that had been shuttered for nearly a decade.

The historic Indiana Theatre was built in 1927, a time when the shameful practice of racial segregation was the standard in movie theatres and public buildings across the United States. The Indiana Theatre building was originally segregated and at some point in its history this practice ceased. Many Indiana residents and their families’ heritage stories recall being treated as less than equal citizens in this building, with some even being barred from entering. We cannot erase this history.

We honor and respect all those who have faced discrimination and harm in this building. We strive every day to make the IRT a place that welcomes all people.

INDIANA REPERTORY THEATRE:

Welcoming the whole community

We strive to celebrate and serve the diverse people and cultures that make up our whole community. The IRT is committed to creating and maintaining a theatre that is inclusive, safe, respectful, and accessible.

Whether you have been coming for years or are here for the first time—welcome to your Theatre!

VALUES

• It is our responsibility as a community resource to open our doors wide, eliminate historical barriers, and welcome all to our high-quality, relevant art.

Dear Audiences,

Welcome to the final show of our season! I have been waiting for years to produce this poignant musical that resonates deeply with the spirit of the Midwest. Our Hoosier neighborly ways make Come From Away one of those rare pieces that feels like home, where the porch light is always left on. Set in the days following 9/11, it tells the true story of a small town in Newfoundland that welcomed thousands of stranded travelers with open arms. Through soaring music and a cast of unforgettable characters, it reminds us of what’s possible through the power of kindness and community. In this story, we see our best selves.

We are also thrilled to announce our 2026-2027 productions! Next season is especially exciting because the IRT will be co-producing works alongside four major regional theatres from around the country. Collaborating with other institutions means we not only welcome new artistic voices to Indianapolis, but we share our work with communities nationwide. While our city is known as a sports hub, we are also home to a vibrant arts scene, and sharing our creative vision from coast to coast helps tell the full story of all Indy has to offer.

From bestseller to blockbuster to the IRT stage: we begin with The Da Vinci Code, a gripping, globe-spanning thriller that follows symbologist Robert Langdon as he deciphers hidden clues in famous works of art, racing against time to uncover a secret that could change history. Next is Kim’s Convenience, a warm and sharply funny portrait of a Korean-Canadian family running a neighborhood store. Many of you may know this as a Netflix series, but it started as a wonderful stage play! We continue our annual holiday tradition with Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, where Ebenezer Scrooge is taken on a journey through his past, present, and future. Filled with theatrical magic, music, and heart, Indy’s favorite festive production celebrates the possibility of redemption and the joy of human connection.

In the new year, we’re proud to present Purpose, the 2025 Pulitzer Prize–winning drama—a richly layered and intimate exploration of a prominent Black family grappling with legacy, faith, and long-buried truths. We’ll also bring the literary classic Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women to life, following the March sisters as they grow up, chase their dreams, and navigate love and loss. We close with our largest musical in decades—one of Broadway’s greatest hits, Guys and Dolls. Bursting with iconic songs like “Luck Be a Lady” and “Sit Down You’re Rockin’ the Boat,” this show will send you out of the theatre tapping your toes and humming these nostalgic numbers.

As we conclude our 53rd season, I want to thank our longtime donors and season ticket members—your support makes our work possible. And to those joining us as first-time patrons for ComeFromAway, we hope this is just the beginning!

THE WRITERS

Irene Sankoff & David Hein

Irene Sankoff and David Hein, book and lyrics, are the Olivier Award winning, Tony and Grammy nominated, Canadian writing team behind the worldwide award-winning hit musical Away, currently playing to more than 100 countries on Apple TV+ and around the world. Their first show, My Mother’s Lesbian Jewish Wiccan Wedding, based on David’s mother’s true story, has won Best Musical awards across North America, with Sankoff and Hein performing in many productions. Together, they have written for Disney, Netflix, Warner Bros., HBO, and the CW, as well as Marvel Comics and the Canadian government. They are the recipients of the Four Freedoms Good Neighbor Award and the Meritorious Service Cross of Canada which recognizes Canadians’ exceptional accomplishments.

COMMUNITY

It is hard to imagine that this year is the 25th anniversary of September 11th. It was one of those days in our history where we remember exactly where we were and what we were doing when we got the news. It remains one of my most terrifying and uncertain moments. Yet, in that moment when humanity was being tested, I also remember humanity rising to the occasion. Never before, and not in the same way since, have I seen communities come together the way they did in 2001. Strangers extended hands to strangers to build new communities; through this awful tragedy, we all found ways to have hope again.

Community and hope are two of the strongest driving forces in my work. When first stepping into this project, I found myself tentative, and treating it with precious gloves. However, the more I dug in, I found it to be anything but precious. With every page turn, these characters—based on and inspired by real humans—shed more of their skin and bared their hearts and souls. With those characters as guides, I found my storytelling coming to life—much as the characters in the show do.

I’m honored to be making my IRT debut with Come From Away, and to be bringing along some of my personal community to Indiana to help me tell this story. It’s been a joy to meet and collaborate with new folks; the cast and crew and creatives, as well as the people of Indiana, who have given me the privilege of expanding my community and my heart. Our wish is that everyone who joins us leaves the Theatre with a new sense of hope. At a time in our country where we are not always in agreement, maybe you’ll take a moment to see strangers with fresh eyes, and find those that come from away.

Some of the real-life people who inspired the characters in Come From Away.

HOW COME FROM AWAY WAS CREATED

Writers Irene Sankoff and David Hein were somewhat familiar with the story of how the town of Gander rallied around the come-from-aways in the days following September 11, 2001. However, it was when they attended a benefit concert in Gander on the ten-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks that they realized the full depth of the story and discovered that they needed to put the story on stage.

The concert, held at the Gander Hockey Rink, felt like a reunion for those who were there in 2001. Many of the “plane people” returned to Gander for the event, and everyone in attendance at the concert was up on their feet dancing to the music, including corporate executives from large commercial airlines. The style of music played at the concert, which is very specific to the region, inspired Hein and Sankoff to write much of their score with that same sound and the same kinds of instruments.

With the help of the Canadian government, Hein and Sankoff stayed in Gander for a month, interviewing residents and returnees alike, speaking with each person for four to five hours at a time. Residents offered homecooked meals to eat, places to stay, and personal stories to share, and Sankoff and Hein even got “screeched in” (the local tradition that welcomes visitors). The writers were overwhelmed with stories of human connection, goodness, and generosity. Even after isolating themes and condensing many stories, the first draft of the show was five hours long. Thanks to the help and guidance of director Christopher Ashley, they boiled the story down until it was much closer to the one-hour-andforty-minute version that you see today.

As a way of saying thank you to those who shared their stories, Sankoff and Hein presented one of the first performances of Come From Away in the town of Gander—on the same hockey rink as the ten-year anniversary concert—as a benefit concert to fund local charities. The show continued its development with productions at La Jolla Playhouse in San Diego, California, Seattle Repertory Theatre, Ford’s Theatre in Washington,

DC, and at the Royal Alexandra Theatre in Toronto, Canada, before the musical opened on Broadway at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre in 2017, playing for 1670 performances. According to American Theatre magazine, Come From Away is the most-produced play in regional theatres this season, with 23 productions.

“We’re taking two groups of protagonists: We’re taking the people coming to a strange place, but we’re also taking the people who live in the strange place, and showing how they were both changed, and they both came together. That’s what makes us whole is realizing that it’s not us and them, it’s all of us.”
