SOME RARE STUDENTS HAVE THEIR 10-YEAR PLAN MAPPED OUT FROM THE FIRST DAY OF HIGH SCHOOL.

They know exactly where they are going to college, what they will study, and what extracurricular activities they will participate in. For everyone else, the seemingly endless number of options feels insurmountable. But good news—with a little bit of introspection and research, choosing the right school becomes easier than you’d think.

GET STARTED “IF YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHERE TO START, just come to a college

fair,” says Tim Sturgeon, admissions director of undergraduate admissions at Bellarmine University. “See what’s available.” You’ll have the opportunity to get up close and personal with a wide variety of options, and you can compare their benefits and opportunities right there without driving to each school.

David Johnson, vice provost of enrollment management for Indiana University, agrees. “At a college fair, you’ll walk up to a table and discover a whole school or learn about a scholarship that you didn’t even know was an opportunity,” he says. “You get things from that in-person research that you don’t get online.”

Although doing some online research is a great place to start, too.

Sturgeon recommends ACT.org and The College Board. Both sites offer tools and guides to help you navigate the complicated process. If you haven’t settled on a major, taking the online quizzes might lead to some options you hadn’t considered. Other resources they provide also help prospective students learn about campus life, find a good college fit, and even explore career possibilities.

Dr. Allison Barber, the chancellor of WGU Indiana, also recommends the Indiana Commission of Higher Education’s website. “They have a calculator that helps students estimate costs of school, and it’s provided by a third party who isn’t trying to get you to enroll in their school,” she says. If you still haven’t chosen what to study, she recommends looking at the list Hoosier Hot 50 Jobs that’s compiled by the Department of Workforce Development every year. It lists a diverse selection of popular career opportunities in Indiana, how much they pay, and what level of education you need for it.

“I always ask people, ‘What passion do you have that can provide a productive career?’” Barber says.

KNOW THYSELF options and have started to get a better idea of what exactly you’re looking for, one of the best things you can do is take time to think about yourself and the type of school that will fit your needs.

“Before you even Google anything, go to your room, shut the door, and ask yourself: What do I want from a school?” says Sturgeon. You should weigh some of the obvious things: Small or big? In-state or out-of-state? Big city or college town? But take some time to get down into the weeds. What do you enjoy doing in your free time? If being outdoors is important, then your school should offer that. What types of clubs or extracurricular opportunities do you enjoy? Does the school have a newspaper? Student theater? Greek life? And of course, you should also consider how much it’s going to cost. Many private schools offer substantial scholarship opportunities, and public schools often come at a price that’s hard to beat.

“I think you find what draws students to a college is often the city or sorority or the football team or a college town,” says Barber. “And for many of our students, the only thing that’s important to them is a respected degree at an affordable price.”

After figuring out what is important to you, do your research. “I find a lot of kids aren’t taking the time to research schools,” says Sturgeon. Barber and Johnson both agree. Dig in deep past the front page of their website to learn about their ethos and the type of faculty who teach there. After learning all that you can from online research and college fairs, it’s time to take the next step and set up a college visit. That’s one of the best ways you can discover the school that feels right for you.

“There are a lot of great schools out there and there are a lot of great students out there. It’s about finding that match,” says Johnson. “Where do you feel comfortable?

Where do you see yourself learning, growing, and thriving? Where do you feel the support as you become the person you’re going to be?”

THE COLLEGE VISIT IS OFTEN ONE OF THE FIRST STEPS ON A STUDENT’S POSTSECONDARY PATH AND A TIME-HONORED RITE OF PASSAGE.

However, the campus visit is more than an opportunity to tour the grounds and collect a souvenir Tshirt. It is an important factor in the student’s school selection and a critical component of the recruitment process, so it’s vital to make the most of it.

ter University, says the campus tour gives students the chance to see themselves at a particular school and determine if it is the best fit for their personality. It may be a standard portion of a college visit, but it is a very important component of the day. Not only does it allow the student to get a feel for the campus’s layout and become familiar with the various buildings and amenities, but it also gives them a chance to see how they may fit into the overall community.

“Some students prefer a smaller campus where they can easily walk everywhere, while others are more at home on a big campus and are comfortable riding a bike or bus,” Chudzynski explains.

John Beacon, senior vice-president for enrollment management, marketing, and communication at Indiana State University, says the more comfortable the student feels during the campus visit, the more likely they are to ask questions. That leads to students who are informed about their decision, confident in their eventual choice, and likely more successful at the school they choose.

“Every school has its own unique personality,” he says. “If students can discover where they feel welcome and comfortable, the likelihood of a good fit and ultimate persistence on to graduation will increase dramatically.”

Another important part of the campus visit is a one-on-one meeting with an admissions counselor. That is the student’s chance to get down in the weeds about the school and ask any and all questions that they have. Admissions counselors are the student’s primary resource for information about the school and their admissions process, and they are well versed on the institution’s programs, academics, and financial aid information. Plus, if they don’t know the answer, it’s their job to connect you to the person who does.

“The role of an admissions counselor is to be an advocate and serve prospective students throughout the college search process,” says Alessa Tracy, senior admissions counselor with Grace College & Seminary. “We are here to troubleshoot any questions they have and help them determine what school may be right for them.”

Admissions counselors can help arrange a tour with a student guide, discuss a student’s academic standing in order to let them know what they expect from a prospective freshman, offer an overview of costs and any financial aid one may qualify for, and make sure you know about important deadlines.

It’s important to take advantage of the tours, meetings, and presentations one will participate in on a campus visit, because it’s your chance to make the best decision the first time around. While there’s nothing wrong with transferring, “it can be a painful process, so it’s best to make the right choice the first time,” Chudzynski says.

Does the school have the major you are interested in?

If so, make an appointment to meet with a faculty member in that department.

What about the school’s student job placement record following graduation? Students will pay more than $50,000 for a four-year degree; make sure that investment pays off.

How are you expected to pay for this? Find out what types of financial aid is available, what you can expect to pay out-of-pocket, if you are eligible for any scholarships, and what type of work-study opportunities may be available.

What support services are available to the student to ensure academic success? See if the school provides academic tutors, personal counselors, wellness facilities, clubs, career advisors, and other methods to help students stay the course.

it’s time to take the next step on the post-secondary journey: completing the application for admission.

Although it is not the only component of the selection process, it is an important one, primarily because it is the most personal. Institutions use the application to get to know the students who apply, gauge an individual’s desire to attend that school, and decide whether each person will be a good fit on campus.

number of things a school takes into consideration. Naturally, academic record is key, but they also want to see if a student took a rigorous course load and whether they stepped out of their comfort zone.

For example, an art student who took a tough math course displays a desire for a comprehensive education. Schools are looking for wellrounded individuals who took part in extracurricular activities and would be an asset to their campus atmosphere.

“We are looking for balanced individuals who are eager to grow and be part of our campus community,” says Rachel Schmidtke, director of recruitment for DePauw University. She says schools are not just looking for students who will be good representatives for a fouryear period but alumni who will be part of the school community for years to come.

And while schools often look for students who have dabbled in a little bit of everything, they also value students who display dedication to activities they are passionate about and ones who have sought out leadership roles in their communities. A student’s transcript can’t possibly convey all of that information which is what makes other sections of the application so important.

“Universities are not always able to meet or interview every candidate for admission, so it’s important for students to take the college admission application seriously and represent themselves in the best way possible,” says Luann Brames, director of freshman admission at Marian University. “Marian University takes a holistic approach in reviewing candidates for admission to the university and considers high school and college transcripts, standardized test scores, personal statements, and letters of recommendation.”

If a university requires an essay, students need to give themselves ample time to complete it—taking time to understand the question or writing prompt, brainstorm about the topic, and reflect on what to say is important. Students should outline their story so that it is easy to follow, write it in their voice, and ask others to proofread it for comprehension, clarity, and critique. Schools often receive essays with easily avoidable mistakes like incorrect grammar or spelling, failing to meet the required word count, or not submitting an essay in the requested format. This part of the application can often make or break a student’s chances, and it is an opportunity to stand out from the other applicants.

“The application and essay allow students to express their person-

ality and helps us get to know them in a way that highlights who they are beyond their transcripts,” says Schmidtke.

Of course not every candidate will get into every school they’ve applied to and there are a number of reasons why. Lori Greene, vice president for enrollment management at Butler University, says it could be that they applied to a highly competitive program and the academic standards are not met by their qualifications. Or they could be a solid candidate and the pool for that particular cycle was more competitive than usual, so they get put on a wait list. Some students present records that are very solid overall but include a dip in grades one semester that needs to be explained.

“In this case, the university may choose to defer the student to see grades from another semester to ensure the student is back on track,” explains Greene. “In the end, it just depends on how competitive all of the candidates are that particular cycle because there are limited seats available each year.”

Ultimately, the college application is the way for a student to raise their hand and indicate why they want to attend a particular college or university. It is your moment in the spotlight so it’s important to make the most of it.
