WEDDING DAY is one of the happiest days of your life, but it can also be one of the most stressful. With so many elements to plan and coordinate and thousands of options to choose from, every minor detail becomes a major decision. It’s enough to turn even the sweetest girl into a raging bridezilla.

However, your wedding does not have to be overwhelming, and you don’t have to micromanage the minutae. Experts say there are a number of ways you can utilize your vendors to lessen the stress and enjoy the first day of the rest of your lives. From bundling services to simplified settings and keeping the lines of communication open, wedding professionals are ready to help

you create the day of your dreams. After all, this is not their first trip down the aisle. They know the ropes, and they can help you turn your wedding into an affair to remember.

MINDING THE MONEY Without question, weddings are expensive, and if there is one thing that can cause a bride’s stress level to skyrocket, it’s cost.

Although many couples probably have a very specific vision of what they want their big day to look like, often that vision does not line up with the budget.

Jordan Allen, director of catering and certified wedding planner at the Indianapolis Marriott North, says its important for brides to determine how much money they have to spend and where they want to spend it. For some, it’s the ceremony itself. For others, it’s the photography, and still others concentrate on the food or entertainment. The important thing is to keep costs in mind and realize where you have to cut back in order to have those elements you really want.

“So many brides are concerned with doing things the way they have seen it done on Pinterest or TV and that’s not a reality for many people,” she says. “I tell brides to set a budget and then make a list of what is important for their special day in order of most important to the least. That way, if you have to cut things because of the budget, you are not skimping on those things you need to enjoy the greatest day of your life.”

Another way brides can mitigate stress is to bundle services so there is only one vendor and, therefore, only one point of contact. Although vendors are professionals who know what they are doing and will work tirelessly to make each wedding perfect, coordinating with all of them can be as much fun as herding cats. If you can cross off multiple items on your list with one vendor, it is always better than crossing off just one item.

After serving as a caterer for a number of years, Jeremy Brown saw firsthand what à la carte pricing could do to a bride’s bottom line. There were a number of add-ons that caused costs to quickly accumulate, and in 2014 he decided to do something about it.

vice providers in Indiana and serves 6,000 people each week. They offer a number of menu options, have a rehearsal dinner space in Noblesville, provide cutlery and plates for every event, have multiple fun add-ons (like photo booths), and can work with local rental firms to provide additional services.

“Your wedding day is one that goes by so quickly, and you really should enjoy it,” he says. “When you work with a vendor who can provide multiple services or connect you with reliable professionals, you don’t have to worry about everything as much.”

Most hotels and wedding venues also offer various packages that can include everything from ceremony, rehearsal, and reception sites to overnight rooms, bar service, and catering.

Allen says about half of her brides take advantage of the Marriott’s ceremony sites so they do not have to organize transportation from one venue to another and know everything is right where they need it. By bundling services, brides can rest assured knowing that everyone onsite knows the lay of the land and is prepared for nearly any issues that might come up.

“Packages make it so much easier,” she says, “It saves you money and gets you the best deal.” Look for a place that bundles bar service for the entire evening, hors d’oeuvres, and dinner. Also try to find a package that includes things like chairs, tables, linen options, and even centerpieces. It saves so much time and money, and it’s one less thing for you to do. When you try to find the best deal on each individual item, you are subject to more nickel–and–diming taxes and fees.

Brown also encourages brides not to cut corners too much. While his prices are competitive, he is neither the cheapest nor the most expensive. Often people think they can save a buck or two by buying certain items themselves, but these savings are usually not worth the time or energy involved.

He also says to guard against those vendors who low-ball their offers because sometimes those estimates wind up being too good to be true.

“You want to know that your vendors are reliable and that they have experience. So many people think, Oh, I can cook, so I can be a caterer. That’s not the case. Make sure they have a license, insurance, and that they know what they are doing. The ultimate stressor is for a vendor not to show up,” he says.

SWEATING THE SMALL STUFF Of course, no matter how much planning goes into an event, it’s only natural for a bride to worry, especially when something happens beyond her control that can throw off the entire game plan. In some cases, a couple can become so married to an idea they cannot imagine it unfolding any other way.

Alyssa Andreanopoulos is the special events manager for Indiana Landmarks. She knows brides invest a lot of time, energy, and money to create their perfect day, and they can drive themselves crazy over the tiniest details.

“I have seen brides get the most upset when something like cocktail hour has to be moved inside due to rain or heat,” she says, noting that brides can avoid stress by being flexible. “If something happens—it begins to rain or the start time gets pushed back—then they should just roll with it and enjoy their special day. In the end, you are marrying the love of your life, and that is the only detail that actually matters.”

Unless you are having a very small event, a wedding coordinator is a must. This insures that you only have one point of contact and that they have the resources to secure what you need at the price you can afford.

“It cuts down on so much of the stress,” she says. “You tell the coordinator your vision, and they help you make it happen. They communicate with all the other vendors and deal with problems you won’t even know existed.”

TRUSTING THE PROS In order to feel confident on your wedding day, make sure you vet vendors well in advance. You cannot assume anything, but if you read the reviews, meet the individual inperson, and feel comfortable with their work, there is no reason not to trust that your event will go smoothly.

James Gucinski, owner of Lakeside Entertainment, says while he appreciates brides who can give him an idea of the kind of music they enjoy and any special songs they want to have played, there is no reason to micromanage the playlist. The reception is the part of the evening when the couple should be spending time with their family and friends, not looking over everyone’s shoulder.
