IN STATE OR OUT? PUBLIC OR PRIVATE? YOU HAVE MYRIAD QUESTIONS TO THINK ABOUT WHEN CHOOSING A COLLEGE OR UNIVERSITY. HOW A SCHOOL MEETS YOUR ACADEMIC NEEDS SHOULD BE CONSIDERED FIRST.

W WHEN CHOOSING A COLLEGE, students might be tempted to pick a school with a great football team or the one with lots of extracurricular activities or a strong service mentality. While these considerations may be important to the student, parents like to remind their offspring that they’re going to college to study first. Finding the right academic environment can mean the difference between muddling through the semester and feeling passionate about the subject matter.

We asked Lori Greene, Butler University’s vice president for enrollment management, and Rashad Smith, the University of Southern Indiana’s director of undergraduate admissions, to give us some tips on how stu-

dents can navigate the college landscape to find a school that fits their learning style and academic needs.

MAJOR WORK A school can be one of the best in the region. But if it doesn’t offer a student’s preferred subject matter, perhaps it’s necessary to look elsewhere.

“I think first and foremost they need to think about what they’re interested in studying,” Greene says. “I’ve seen students go through and choose an institution that has everything else, but it doesn’t have the sub-

ject they want to study.”

Not every student may have a major in mind, Smith says. Maybe they have a few ideas they would like to explore, or maybe they know they want to pursue some area of study, but they’re not sure how it translates to a major. Those who are undecided should look for a school that has a strong program in place for helping students make this decision. For instance, the University of Southern Indiana has its University Division, which includes the Center for Exploring Majors.

“The whole concept is for students to have the ability to explore majors, to work on academic skills, and have tutoring and tests to determine where they fit,” Smith says.

WORKING IN THE CLASSROOM Some students like intimate classroom settings, with professors asking questions and encouraging dialogue. Others prefer to work alone, learning from lectures and independent study. Many like something in between.

Greene suggests students reflect on their high school experiences for answers.

“Look at the academic environment they’re coming from,” Greene says. “Ask themselves, How do I learn best? Am I better off in lectures or with lively discussion or research components?

Do I prefer classes that are writing intensive?”

Most college websites will list a studentto-faculty ratio, which can be a good starting point, Smith says. The student/faculty ratio at the University of Southern Indiana is 17:1, which suggests smaller class sizes. But students may find themselves in larger lecture halls during certain classes, especially those general education courses required for several majors. Even at large schools, class sizes tend to shrink as students progress through their studies and focus more on their core subjects.

ACCOMMODATING ISSUES Many of today’s campuses have programs in place to assist students who struggle with learning issues or disabilities. Students are advised to check out these programs before they choose a school to ensure they’re plugging into the necessary channels for success.

“Families should ask about the process for requesting accommodations,” Smith says.

“They need to find out if documentation is required and how long it takes to get an answer. Generally, they can ask at the admissions office, but it is not usually handled in the admissions office. They should ask to be directed to the office where they can discuss their child’s needs.”

Sometimes a simple Google search such as “What college is best for (fill in the major)?” can unearth schools that might not be on a student’s radar. After a few college tours, the choice may become obvious.

“Students naturally start to narrow it

down,” Greene says.

As far as the football team and the social life go, don’t discount their importance. A good social fit can complement the right academic environment, creating the perfect marriage.

“In this day and age, truly it’s both [academic and social],” Greene says. “There has to be a balance there.”

CAN YOU AFFORD COLLEGE? Look beyond the published price and get inventive to reduce post-secondary education costs.

THE PUBLISHED PRICE OF A COLLEGE may seem out of reach, but don’t let that stop you from investigating your dream school. There are many ways to reduce costs.

“For Manchester University, the published price would be around $40,000,” says Adam Hohman, Manchester’s assistant vice president for enrollment and marketing.

“But an average family would pay maybe 40 percent of that.”

The doorway to financial aid is the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid; fafsa.gov). It determines a student’s eligibility for many scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study programs. Here’s a breakdown of the different types.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND GRANTS. Grants, such as the Frank O’Bannon Grant and the Federal Pell Grant, and scholarships are “free” money. Scholarships can be school-specific or general, and there are a ton of them online.

“Apply early and often for scholarships,” says Stan Werne, director of financial aid at Vincennes University. “Even the little ones add up.”

Schools can offer academic scholarships and auxiliary awards ranging from athletic to band scholarships.

“It’s all about diving into the opportunities at each school,” Hohman says. And don’t forget local sources, such as community foundations, businesses, and parents’ employers.

LOANS. Loans must be repaid. Undergraduates are eligible for two types of U.S. Department of Education loans—subsidized (interest-free to students) and unsubsidized (students pay interest). Borrow only what you absolutely need based on your cost of attendance.

“And if you can pay on your loan while you’re in school, even if it’s just the interest, do it,” Werne says. “It can make a big difference later on.”

Private loans, generally more expensive than federal ones, can also be used to finance school expenses. Their terms can vary significantly, but schools can provide families with education to help them determine the best course.

WORK-STUDY PROGRAMS.

This award isn’t free. The student has to earn it by working part-time while in school. Programs vary from campus to campus.

DO THE HOMEWORK Most families don’t have the time or the budget to personally visit every university that sounds appealing. Fortunately, many tools exist to help students narrow their lists of potential campus homes. My College Op-

Transfer AP and dual-degree credits earned in high school, and take the maximum credit hours—generally 15 or 18—allowed per semester. And check out accelerated programs, such as Manchester’s Fast Forward, which allows students to graduate in three years.

“There are affordable options for undergraduate degrees in Indiana,” Hohman says.

ACADEMICS AREN’T THE ONLY FACTOR IN BEING A SUCCESSFUL UNDERGRAD. WHAT HAPPENS OUTSIDE THE CLASSROOM CAN MAKE OR BREAK YOUR COLLEGE EXPERIENCE.

IT’S NOT DIFFICULT TO IMAGINE incoming freshmen, in the excitement of the moment, glossing over what exactly it means to be away at college. Reality sets in, and they realize they’re in a strange environment, often miles from home, and may not know a single person. Meals and laundry are suddenly their responsibilities. It can be lonely and overwhelming. They might even doubt if going to school was the right decision after all.

Fortunately, colleges and universities offer many solutions and avenues of support to help students integrate socially.

“We really want to help students feel like

they belong here,” says Libby Spotts, associate dean and director of the Office of Student Conduct at Indiana University Bloomington.

“We want to do that pretty quickly because we know it can help a student succeed.”

PRIOR TO ENROLLING Students’ first priority should be that a school offers coursework that meets their academic goals. But the campus environment should also be one in which a student can thrive socially. It takes both.

“A big component of picking a college is

making sure the fit is right,” says Keri Ellington, dean of student success and retention at Franklin College. “Students and their families shouldn’t take this decision lightly.”

Big campuses typically have large classes and a huge array of extracurricular opportunities. This environment may be stimulating to some, but just too much for others. Smaller campuses offer a more intimate setting where students practically know everyone, and while this atmosphere may be comfortable to some, others may find it boring. There are also bustling urban campuses, laidback rural campuses, residential campuses, and commuter campuses.

When you tour a school, ask lots of questions—especially of other students. Ellington suggests asking them what’s fun to do on campus and what interesting opportunities are offered, including off-campus internships and study-abroad programs.

Spotts, also the interim director of Student Life and Learning at IUB, says it’s important that potential students envision how they see themselves engaging as a student, and then ask if they can do that at each campus they visit. The dormitory will be your new home.

Can you see yourself living there? Also ask if the campus offers a club you find interesting, whether it’s spikeball or accounting.

“At the end of the day, it’s up to the student to decide what it is they need and want from their college experience,” Spotts says.

PARTICIPATION AND ENGAGEMENT ARE KEY

room buildings, the student health center, bus stops, and other important places before classes start.

The roommate experience is new ground for many incoming freshmen. It involves some give-and-take and even difficult conversations—like when an early riser is paired with a night owl. But ironing out the little things, like visitor hours, room temperature, and when to turn the lights out, can make a huge difference in students’ happiness quotients, health, and grades.

“Take time to build a community in your residence hall,” Spotts says. “That’s usually your first opportunity for peer interaction.”

IF IT ISN’T WORKING “The biggest thing students can do if they are struggling is to reach out,” Ellington says.

“Every college and university has the resourc-

es and support structures in place to help students who don’t feel like they fit in or aren’t sure the college is for them.”

Franklin College’s Student Success Team creates individualized plans for students who are struggling academically, financially, or socially. At Indiana University, Student Life and Learning helps connect people who share the same interests and hosts a Student Involvement Fair with info on campus organizations. And if students are dealing with academic problems, stress, and other issues, the IU Health Center provides free and confidential counseling sessions.

Adjusting to college life doesn’t happen overnight, but planning ahead and understanding what it takes to be successful can help ease the change.

“We know getting involved in an organization quickly or even having a job on campus are two things that can help make the transition go more smoothly,” Spotts says.

Students who get involved outside the classroom are more likely to do well academically and graduate in four years than those who don’t participate. Franklin College feels that these endeavors are so crucial to the student experience that the school labels them “co-curricular” rather than “extracurricular” activities.

“Co-curricular offerings help students feel that they are part of something bigger than themselves,” Ellington says. “They also create learning opportunities and support groups that help students navigate through the end of college.”

All kinds of activities and organizations are available to students—sports-related, academic-based, volunteer/civic engagement, student media, religion, niche interests, and special events. Indiana University offers more than 750 registered, student-led organizations and clubs, but if you don’t find exactly what you’re looking for, they’ll help you start your own group.

FAMILIARITY AND COMFORT COUNT Becoming acquainted with the campus ahead of time can alleviate anxiety and make students feel more at home. Take time to familiarize yourself with dining halls, class-

publish and present research at conferences at places like Cambridge and Harvard; and travel the globe for academic studies, mission work and performances, including a recent appearance by the IWU Chorale at Carnegie Hall in New York City.
