CATHEDRAL HIGHLIGHTS

Field Dedicated on Cathedral's 107th Birthday

Brunette

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT

"You are the light of the world. A city set on a mountain cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and then put it under a bushel basket; it is set on a lampstand where it gives light to all in the house. Just so, your light must shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your heavenly Father." - Matthew 5:14-16

I love this magnificent quote from scripture. I often tell students and adults not to put their light under a bushel basket but let it shine for all to see! Here at Cathedral, I see shining examples of us doing exactly this, and I am happy to share some of these with you.

On December 8, we hosted several hundred Enlace Academy students for our third annual Christmas on the Hill following a beautiful all-school mass, where we shared a little slice of Irish Christmas with our community neighbors. I believe it was a perfect way to celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception! Let it shine!

On December 18, we wrapped up a wonderful first semester with our annual All-Educator Christmas Party, highlighted by Holy Mass, gift-sharing, and a meal with our first-class Educators. Let it shine!

January brought us a new year and another round of J-Term activities, where our students and educators got to experience school in a vastly unique way, whether by traveling near and far, or job-shadowing, or interning closer to home, or by staying at school and learning more about this beautiful place we call home. Let it shine!

2026 will shine a spotlight on the Women of Cathedral's History for the past 50 years! Our 49th annual Shamrauction has a terrific theme, A League of Their Own, which excellently describes the outstanding contributions women have made to our school. I hope to see you there on February 28! Let it shine!

Throughout this year, and for the next 4-5 years, we will be great stewards of a $12 million Lilly Endowment Inc. Grant. The initiatives we will implement include the following:

• Expand College and Career Readiness through year-round experiential learning and increased access to Dual Credit and AP courses

• Strengthening Academic and Social-Emotional Support by expanding our counseling department's multi-tiered system of support

• Enhancing Educator development and retention through the Empowering Educators Initiative, which includes affordable housing for new teachers.

• Build a Health and Wellness Center and a new Performing Arts Studio.

We are incredibly grateful for this grant, which will transform the trajectory of Cathedral students for years to come and further enhance the student experience. Our students and educators and their good works will be "set on a lampstand, where it gives light for all in the house.

Thank you for your prayers and support as we continue to improve Cathedral High and ensure we keep shining our light for all to see! Praise God, and Go Irish!

Humbly and faithfully,

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

It's amazing to think the Jubilee Year of Hope has already passed and that we now find ourselves in 2026—the Semiquincentennial of the United States. Having lived through the Bicentennial of 1976, I find that especially remarkable. This year also marks the beginning of the 50th anniversary of Women at Cathedral. My wife, Elizabeth, was part of the first class of girls to enter the Hill as freshmen. Though she had expected to attend Ladywood–St. Agnes, she quickly came to love Cathedral through cheerleading, tennis, and memorable teachers like Doc Wellman and Glenn Mauger—whose chemistry class she still credits for her success in nursing. Learn more about our 50 Years of Women celebration on our website at gocathedral.com/with-her-leading. We'll also have a special 50 Years of Women section in our next Highlights magazine.

As we begin this new year, we look both ahead with hope and back with gratitude for a semester filled with God's grace and significant momentum. We welcomed 318 new students to Cathedral in the fall of 2025, and they are already contributing in meaningful ways. A small group of freshmen even launched one of our newest clubs—The Success Club. Dr. Bridges and I both enjoyed meeting with them and witnessing the leadership already emerging in our young students.

Our mission of forming students in faith and character has been especially evident this semester. From daily prayer to school liturgies and retreats, our community continues to seek a deeper relationship with Christ. Our focus on our Core Value of Excellence through honor, integrity, and courage reminds us that excellence only matters when it is grounded in moral purpose—a truth Cathedral has championed from the beginning.

Our students continue to shine academically, artistically, and in service and leadership. Athletics, too, brought joy and unity, as our Fighting Irish competed with determination and character, proving once again that sports are a powerful classroom for life, regardless of the final record.

Our educators remain the heart of Cathedral. Their creativity, professionalism, and devotion to students shape our culture every day. This semester, they engaged

in meaningful professional formation, including the Educating for Eternity book study and preparation for next year's modified block schedule. Their desire to grow—spiritually, professionally, and personally— strengthens our entire school.

Above all, Cathedral's greatest strength is our sense of family. We have felt that spirit through active parent partnerships, loyal alumni, and the steadfast support of our Board of Trustees.

As we move into this new year, I am grateful for our students, parents, alumni, benefactors, and educators who bring Cathedral's mission to life. May we enter the year with renewed hope, a commitment to excellence, and hearts ready to follow Christ in faith, integrity, service and love.

Thank you for being part of the Cathedral family and for helping us form the next generation of leaders.

May God's peace be with you,

EMPOWERING GREATNESS

ALUMNAE DEVELOP APP TO HELP PEOPLE WHO HELP PEOPLE

Haley Blanchet '18 and Marcelle Blanchet '20 have a lot in common. In addition to graduating from Cathedral, both sisters earned degrees in nursing from Purdue University: Haley in 2022 and Marcelle in 2024. And the commonality doesn't end there. Both sisters work at Children's Hospital Colorado.

"We truly began bonding over nursing—and how deeply it shaped our lives—when we both moved to Denver and were lucky enough to work at the same hospital," said Haley. "Sharing the unique stresses and joys of the nursing world brought us closer, and it opened our eyes to something bigger: countless other nurses just like us were searching for the same sense of community."

As Haley and Marcelle grew closer through their shared experiences, they realized there was room for a platform that supported nurses not just at work, but in their everyday lives. "We wanted to create something that made the day-to-day a little easier while helping nurses connect in meaningful ways," Haley said.

From their vision, the sisters worked with a Denver-based app design team to develop the EightTenTwelve app—an app that helps nurses make connections outside of work, lighten their workload with an easy-to-use calendar, and offer a curated hub of discounts and perks.

"Creating this app has brought Haley and me an incredible amount of joy," said Marcelle. "We've been through so much together, even sharing the rare experience of undergoing the same open-heart surgery just a few years apart, and that journey has made us inseparable. Building something that not only supports our own lives but also gives back to the nursing community that cared for us during our recoveries feels deeply meaningful. There's something truly special about contributing to a tool that can ease the everyday challenges of the very people who once helped us heal."

As of November, 3,000 nurses were using the app. "The app has become a genuinely helpful part of my daily routine," said Marcelle. "It's the first place I go to check my schedule, and being able to share my workdays with others has been so much fun."

Marcelle and Haley are receiving nationwide attention for their innovation. Nurse Mike, the creator of Simple Nursing, has invited Haley and Marcelle to appear on Bedpan Banter, a podcast, in February. Additionally, the sisters participated in Purdue's Nursing Career Fair this past November and are excited to join the Indiana Association of Nursing Students' annual conference in January.

Craig Blanchet, a Social Studies Educator at Cathedral, is understandably one of his daughters' biggest fans. “When I see my daughters in their nursing scrubs or listen to their stories of care for their patients, I can't help but smile,” said Mr. Blanchet. “Nurses are truly unsung humble heroes. I am so proud of Haley and Marcelle for creating EightTenTwelve, an app that supports their nursing community.”

Haley Blanchet and Marcelle Blanchet: two sisters, one app development, countless shared experiences, and thousands of admirers who appreciate their innovativeness, selflessness, and compassion.

You can download the free EightTenTwelve app from your App Store.

EMPOWERING GREATNESS

DR. BRODERICK RHYANT '90: ON A MISSION TO SERVE THE UNDERSERVED

Dr. Broderick Rhyant '90 did not initially envision a career in medicine. His early intention was to pursue law, but after participating in several collegiate mock trials, he realized the legal field was not his calling. Recognizing his passion for people and his desire to make a meaningful impact—particularly within underserved communities—he reconsidered his path. Encouraged his twin brother's mentor, he decided to explore medicine, a decision that ultimately shaped his vocation.

“My twin brother, Roderick, has always aspired to be a physician, and I am incredibly proud of him for achieving that dream,” Broderick shared. “Roderick is now practicing medicine in Georgia. My journey was different, but one constant is the profound preparation I received from my Cathedral education.”

Broderick, who prefers to be addressed by his first name rather than his professional title, earned his medical degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine in 1998. He subsequently completed his residency through the Family Medicine Residency Program at the Indiana University School of Medicine, followed by a fellowship in Underserved Medicine through the Indiana University Department of Family Medicine.

He is a Family Practice Physician and currently serves as Chief Physician Executive at the Eskenazi Health Thomas and Arlene Grande Campus (named after Thomas Grande '70 and his wife Arlene) on Indianapolis's east side. Although he has held numerous leadership positions, he emphasizes that his work is not about titles but about service. “It is not about me. It is about what I can do to serve others, especially the underserved.”

He credits Cathedral for nurturing that spirit of service. “I believe that caring for others is rooted in faith, and Cathedral's educators are profoundly faith-filled individuals. There is a distinctive spirit within that community, one that promotes the importance of loving and supporting others.”

In his role at Eskenazi Health Center Grande, Broderick focuses on expanding healthcare access for underserved populations.

Please scan the QR code for more information about Eskenazi Health Thomas & Arlene Grande Campus.

The state-of-the-art facility provides the community with enhanced primary and specialty care options. “What you see in this facility is a reflection of our mission and values. Our approach to healthcare is centered on relationships. Our staff cares deeply about people and remains committed to the mission. Our goal is to provide compassionate care that treats the whole person.”

“We strive to support our patients by addressing all factors that influence health, including transportation, literacy, and nutrition. It is about forming meaningful relationships with patients and offering support with kindness and compassion.”

Cathedral is proud that an alum is leading important work on the city's east side, and we are grateful to partner in that effort through Brunette Park, Brunette Field, and future initiatives rooted in our Holy Cross values.

Broderick's lifelong aspiration has been to serve marginalized communities. While he may not be advocating in a courtroom, he is fiercely dedicated to championing wellness and health equity on Indianapolis's east side—working tirelessly to improve the health of residents, one patient at a time.

NINE STUDENTS PREPARING TO JOIN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

We are proud to celebrate nine Cathedral students who are in the process of joining the Catholic Church. Cathedral offers an OCIA (Order of Christian Initiation of Adults) Class, taught by one of our Holy Cross educators, Fr. Geoff Mooney, C.S.C. Fr. Geoff said, "These students are blazing a trail here at Cathedral and serve as witnesses to our core values of Hope, Zeal, and trust in God's Providence." The students were welcomed as Catechumens (Unbaptized) and Candidates (Baptized, Non-Catholics) during an AllSchool Mass in November.

Congratulations to the following students, pictured left to right:

Candidates - Lilyana Shirley '28, Tyler Neucks '26, Alice Michael '28, and Nolan McCracken '26. Catechumens - Adny Paluciano '26, Kendall Moe '26, Jordan McLinn '28, Landon Hughes '26, and Jackson Harvey '26. Standing behind each Candidate and Catechumen is their sponsor, or a mentor who filled in for a sponsor who was unable to make it to Mass.

When asked why they felt called to join the Catholic Church, Adny said, “I was in a horrible accident my freshman year. Mr. (Dave) Neeson came to visit me, and once I got back to school, I started spending my lunch period in Mr. Neeson's and Mr. Pifer's (Campus Ministry) office. Mr. Neeson really inspired me. The Catholic faith feels like home. I love Cathedral, and I love Holy Cross.”

What one word do these students use to describe the Catholic Church?

Loving - Accepting - Truth - Forgiving - Encouraging - Diverse - Universal

“The Catholic Church is so welcoming,” Tyler said. “Ever since the All-School Mass, I've had so many people tell me they're excited for me.”

Jackson added, “I was very nervous during Mass, and I'm sure I wasn't the only one. But during Mass, I felt like a tremendous weight was coming off my shoulders.”

“These students inspire me every day,” said Father Geoff. “I am amazed by their courage to take this step at their age.”

Please join us in praying for these students as they continue preparation for baptism, confirmation, and the Holy Eucharist at the Easter Vigil in April. May they continue to feel welcomed and loved during their journey toward full communion with the Catholic Church.

"While we prepare useful citizens for society, we shall likewise do our utmost to prepare citizens for heaven." - Blessed Basil Moreau, Congregation of Holy Cross.

HOLY CROSS PILGRIMAGES

Year Three of Holy Cross Pilgrimages

"Zeal is the great desire to make God known, loved, and served, and thus to bring knowledge of salvation to others." - Blessed Basil Moreau, Founder of Holy Cross.

Thanks to the generosity of Dan '70 and Betsy Brunette, a third group of Cathedral educators participated in Holy Cross pilgrimages this fall. We are grateful that these educators have a renewed spirit of zeal, which they can now share with their students and fellow educators.

Top photo: The educators who traced our Holy Cross roots in France included Irene Wilson, Mary Ann White ‘11, Mark Matthews, Maribeth Malarney '86 Cloud, Matt Cannaday, John O'Hara '02, and Elliot Hershberger-Gray. The group also visited historical sites, including the Normandy American Cemetery at Omaha Beach, where this photo was taken.
The Rome pilgrims included Rose Egan, Karen Hovanec, John Streiff '09, Kim Jamell, and Brother Matt Rehagen, C.S.C. These pilgrims attended a Papal audience, visited the Sistine Chapel, and made it through four Holy Doors.
The group also attended Mass at Notre-Dame de Paris.
Father Jomy Mathew, C.S.C., accompanied the educators to France, where he offered Mass at the Tomb of Holy Cross Founder Blessed Basil Moreau.

FALL SEMESTER HOLY CROSS AWARD WINNERS

Congratulations to the exceptional students who received a Holy Cross Award this semester. Educators nominated students for living out the Holy Cross Core Values.

The Blessed Moreau Award is given to students who demonstrate leadership and serve their community. The Saint Brother André Bessette Award is bestowed upon students who are role models for their classmates, are involved in student activities, and provide generous service to others.

Quinn Braun ‘26 - Top Ten Finish in High School Hustle

Congratulations to Quinn Braun '26 on earning a Top Ten Finish in the Indiana High School Hustle and being awarded $10,000!

The High School Hustle program encourages young entrepreneurs to launch businesses while still in high school. After representatives visited Cathedral during lunch to promote the competition, Quinn was inspired.

This summer, Quinn launched QTB Services LLC, a hands-on business offering a wide range of services, including gutter cleaning, window washing, lawn care, furniture moving, pressure washing, interior car detailing, photography/videography, and the construction of portable pitching mounds.

"Gutter cleaning was my most lucrative hustle, but it was tough," Quinn shared. "I was competing against big companies, so I had to market myself and provide customers with premium service. I learned that hard work beats talent when talent doesn't work hard."

Quinn's hard work paid off—he earned more than $30,000 in just two months, finishing 5th out of 2,100 students statewide. He and the other nine top finishers split the $100,000 grand prize. He will use his $10,000 prize to fund his college education.

Since winning his huge award, Quinn has been named the Student Founder of High School Hustle at Cathedral. “The net worth of the individuals I have gathered as mentors equates to billions of dollars. One mentor alone has a net worth of around 10 billion dollars.”

Quinn aspires to be a firefighter but also plans to keep a side hustle. This, however, wasn't always his dream. He initially wanted to be an attorney. During his J-Term, he felt what he described as a “quiet nudge” to be a firefighter. “I felt the call to serve, help, and protect,” says Quinn. “There is honor in firefighting; having the courage to serve others, wanting nothing in return. Honor grows out of faith, and every Cathedral teacher, coach, and staff member has helped shape that understanding.”

If you'd like to learn more about Quinn's business, please visit his website at qtb.services.com and consider signing up to be a High School Hustle Mentor to help guide exceptional young people like Quinn.

High School Hustle Needs Mentors!

It's not a full-time or weekly commitment. The program just needs real people with real experience who can share what they know - even if it's just by text or a short call once a month.*

Most students aren't taught how to build or sell, but they're ready to start!

High School Hustle gives them that chance, but they can't do it without people who've already been where the students are trying to go.

If you're an entrepreneur, creative, or just someone who remembers what it was like figuring out the real world… you're exactly who we need.

Scan the QR code and sign up to mentor a student today!

*You're matched with one or two students.

*Join us for a kick-off lunch if you're available.

*Stay in touch with your students by text, a call, or short updates.

*Help your student hit the first $100 in revenue with the hustle.

Each Enlace student was partnered with one of our seniors, and treated to a petting zoo, face painting, cookie decorating, Christmas caroling, and so much more! Special thanks go to Cathedral educators Lisa Finn, Katie Lewis, and Aly Saum '12 Weaver for leading the effort to bring Christmas joy to our friends from Enlace.

Sports Wraps

Boys Cross Country

Cathedral High School boys cross-country had a solid season in 2025, with a young team performing in strong fashion and setting a tone for the future. That sort of season was needed, and the Irish delivered.

“A huge step forward for the boys,” Brian Gross called the '25 season.

The Irish in Gross' second season as boys cross-country head coach ran well in the postseason, with solid finishes at the sectional, city, and All-Catholic meets, and with a team that featured strong upperclassmen and a strong freshman class.

The Irish finished seventh at the Section 17 meet at Mount Vernon High School in West Fortville.

“We have a good program here. We're going to be competitive. We're going to be going after it, but also, we're going to focus on developing upstanding men and women. I think that message is getting through.”

Flag Football

Cathedral High School flag football progressed in 2025, establishing a strong foundation in a developing sport— and doing so in a successful and memorable fashion.

The future is bright for this program, and the present was productive and fun.

“It was a good growth year,” Irish flag football coach Eric Bruns said.

Irish flag football in 2025—its second season as a program in the second season for flag football in Indiana—finished with a 6-3 record. The program grew in numbers and success, improving throughout an eightgame regular season before a 47-34 loss to Shortridge in the first round of the postseason.

The eight-game regular season marked a five-game increase from the program's 2024 inaugural season. Interest also grew, with 21 girls participating throughout the season.

Also, Cathedral has her first flag football All-State player! Congratulations to senior Arynn Garrard!

Football

Cathedral High School football in 2025 overcame a slew of key injuries, delivered many memorable moments, and remained one of the state's elite programs. "Our kids were resilient and tough," Bill Peebles '88 said.

The Irish in Peebles' eighth season as head coach finished 7-4 in 2025, losing to New Palestine 20-15 in the Class 5A, Sectional 13 title game.

"They played really hard, and we could've won the game," Peebles said. "We made too many mistakes against New Pal. You can't make mistakes against a really good team. We were resilient and played hard." New Pal went on to win the Class 5A state championship.

"We overcame a lot of adversity and may have overachieved in a lot of situations this season," Peebles said. Our kids fought."

The Irish not only beat Warren Central in 2025, but they also beat Class 6A perennial power Center Grove for a second consecutive season – that program's lone regularseason loss in '25.

Girls Cross Country

They were deep, talented and successful.

This was Cathedral High School girls cross-country in 2025—a season in which a tradition-rich program built on its history with an eye on the future, with a strong season and postseason.

“It was a really good season,” Brian Gross said.

The Irish in Gross' third season as girls cross-country coach ran with a mix of experience and youth in 2025, and a strong team continued its tradition of strong performances in the sectional and regional meets.

“I'm just so excited the way they responded to the challenge,” Gross said.

The Irish girls finished fourth at the Section 17 meet at Mount Vernon High School and 13th at the Regional 4. The Irish also turned in third-place finishes at the AllCatholic and City meets.

Girls Golf

Youth was a big part of 2025 Cathedral High School girls golf, with an experienced team and a boost from a seriously talented freshman, turning in a memorable season with postseason success and a foundation laid.

“It was a great season,” Nick Jamell '13 said.

The Irish in Jamell's third season as head coach turned in second-place finishes in the City Tournament and the Section 18 tournament in 2025, with freshman Mallory Jaske emerging as a front-line player for the present and future.

Jaske, after winning the City title with a score of 74 at South Grove, shot 93 to finish third at the sectional tournament at Maple Creek Golf Club.

“It was a great start to her career, for sure,” Jamell said.

The Irish as a team shot 403 to finish as runner-up at the sectional, with junior Abby Mattingly '27 shooting 100 followed by sophomore Maddy Turner '28 at 101, senior Addie Pantzer '26 at 109 and senior Katie Boggs '26 at 114. Turner also medaled at the city tournament. It was a postseason that successfully capped the careers of core seniors while providing quality experience for returning players.

Boys Soccer

That the 2025 Cathedral High School boys soccer season didn't end the way Irish wanted didn't make it unsuccessful. They played with heart against a tough schedule, remaining a state power. Even if it wasn't easy.

“It was a fun group,” Joel Russell said. “I wish we could have given these guys a little bit more. It's tough to navigate the schedule we had and to stay positive. This team had something to prove. I'm happy with how our team came together.”

The Irish, playing with a smaller-than-usual roster in Russell's sixth season as coach, spent the 2025 season ranked in the top 20 in the state. The boys defeated Covenant Christian 3-1 for the City Championship. The Irish beat Herron 6-0 in the first round at sectional before losing 2-2 to Lawrence North, 5-4 in penalty kicks in the semifinal. They finished the season 10-6-3.

“I could appreciate the growth of our players,” Russell said. “I think we had more in our tank. Our season prepared us for a run. We were ready. It's just disappointing we just didn't catch a break in the penalty.”

Girls Soccer

Cathedral High School girls soccer in 2025 continued its long tradition as an elite, front-line program. More importantly, as Marc Behringer '84 saw it, the '25 Irish played with rare – and exemplary – heart.

“On the whole, I would say this team was quite successful,” Behringer said.

The Irish in Behringer's 30th season as head coach lost to perennial power Carmel, 3-0, in the Class 3A, Section 9 semifinal. They finished the 2025 season 14-3-2 and No. 10 in the Class 3A Indiana Soccer Coaches Association rankings.

They also finished the regular season ranked No. 24 nationally by MaxPreps.

“I'm as proud of this team as any other I've had because this team faced challenge after challenge throughout the course of the season,” Behringer said. “Their belief pulled us through every time.”

The Irish in 2025 beat Noblesville and Carmel in the same season for the first time, also winning the 2025 City Championship and the Carmel Invitational.

Boys Tennis

Irish boys tennis in Jeff Giles' fifth season as coach played one of the state's most difficult regular-season schedules in '25 before moving through the postseason and qualifying for the semi-state round for a second consecutive season.

Qualifying for semi-state again was an accomplishment that Giles called “worth pointing out, because the program hasn't been to that state round since 2005.”

“It has been 20 years since we even had an opportunity to knock on the door to get to state,” Giles said. “We were a

little underappreciated and under-ranked for the second half of the year. We had one bad loss. We rallied from there and started to get better. We're always looking for that affliction point, and that was it for this season.

“We dropped out of the Top 30. I knew we were better than that, so to end up in the Top 16 in the state by making it to that semi-state round was really a big accomplishment for the program.”

Girls Volleyball

The Irish stayed true to their objective and persevered. Cathedral High School girls volleyball did this impressively in 2025, facing adversity throughout another successful season as one of the state's most tradition-rich programs.

“I love these girls,” Karrie Quenichet said. “We've been working on being a family, and that came to fruition. We saw the benefits of that this year.”

The '25 Irish spent Quenichet's fourth season as head coach ranked high in the state, sweeping their way to the Section 26 title with 3-0 victories over Shortridge and Bishop Chatard despite injury and illness. They finished the season 23-10 and ranked No. 2 in the state in Class 3A, losing to eventual state champion Roncalli, 3-1, in the Greenfield-Central regional.

The Irish beat Roncalli twice during the regular season— at Roncalli and in the final of the Providence Invitational four days later.
