A MESSAGE FROM THE BOARD CHAIR In November, the Board of Directors participated in its annual retreat at the St. Joseph Retreat Center, the same center where our senior retreats are held. The purpose of this time is to improve our board performance, plan for the future, create fellowship, and participate in spiritual renewal. Several years ago, we added this final component to our retreat. We realized that every contingent of Cathedral was involved in some spiritual activity, and we wanted to extend that same gift of time for spiritual reflection to our board. The retreat feedback indicates that it is now one of the most favored sessions. This year, Father Geoffrey, one of our new Holy Cross religious and a mathematics teacher, led our reflection and assisted us in crafting our personal mission statements. He is a dynamic speaker and shared with us that at the end of each math class, he tells his students, "They are children of God and that they are loved." We were so inspired by his presentation and feel blessed that our students interact daily with him and the other religious men and women we have on campus. In September, Dr. Rob Bridges and I were invited to another retreat in LaPorte with leaders of the Holy Cross schools in the Midwest province. Here, we interacted with the Board Chairs and Presidents of each school and discussed best practices, challenges, successes, and Holy Cross' influence in our schools. It was a wonderful opportunity for us to listen and learn from other schools that share our core values and to learn more about the history of the Congregation of Holy Cross. Our reaffiliation with Holy Cross has been a blessing in many ways, and most recently with the brothers and priests who have been assigned to teach here over the last few years. Senior retreat is still a staple experience for our senior class. It is offered several times throughout the year so that any student can attend. It is an overnight retreat meant to provide our students with an opportunity

to form a deeper relationship with God and their fellow classmates. Cathedral now offers an overnight retreat experience for juniors as well. This retreat spans two days; our students are transported to South Bend where they spend time on the campuses of Holy Cross College, Saint Mary's College, and the University of Notre Dame. Students have spiritual reflection, pray, and learn about the history of Holy Cross. It has become a favorite experience for our students during their junior year. Sophomores and freshmen also participate in days of reflection meant to deepen their faith and friendships. As we head into winter here on the Hill, life is busy. We welcomed a large group of potential students to campus during our Fall Open House and many of those 8th graders have already received their admittance box and acceptance letter. We had many successful fall athletic seasons, talented casts for fall shows, great performances at NCYC (National Catholic Youth Conference) by our choirs, and numerous clubs are in full swing for the year. Lastly, we were chosen by Lumen Accreditation to be one of their pilot schools for their new accreditation program for Catholic schools. Recognized by the State of Indiana, they provide an accreditation that allows schools to align their goals for improvement with the Church's vision for Catholic schools' mission and identity. Thank you for all the support you give Cathedral and please keep our students, educators, and board in your prayers.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT I am pleased to report Cathedral remains focused on our Strategic Goals for the 2023-24 school year. Our goals encompass a well-thought-out and resilient roadmap designed to guide us in fulfilling our mission and vision. Here is a quick synopsis of where we stand in our progress:

This past October, 11 educators were able to attend these trips, and described them as "a life-changing experience." We plan to send another group in March, and then again next October. The realization of this goal is thanks to the generosity of Dan '70 and Betsy Brunette. We are also sharing our Holy Cross education work with our fellow Holy Cross schools around the globe. As a part of this same goal, we hosted eight Holy Cross School leaders from Bangladesh and India and plan to host an even larger group in the spring. Meeting and exchanging ideas with others across the world makes us all better learners.

Our Leadership Team decided last summer that we needed to adapt our plan to strategize about a new school-related topic: Artificial Intelligence. AI had emerged on the scene last spring, and as advertised, anyone could ask AI to type any research paper for them. This, of course, horrified educators. Due to this and other related examples, we knew we had to get ahead of AI and even embrace it as a new tool to enhance classroom learning. We prioritized this idea as goal number one for our team this year. Thus far, we have defined AI and clarified its use in our handbook. We have also held numerous Professional Development sessions, discussing the latest uses and ramifications. We will continue gathering information and strategizing on how as a school, we can leverage AI to enhance our mission.

As part of our overall strategic plan, we are refining efforts to raise funds for key projects. These projects include the Lacrosse/Soccer Field at Brunette Park, a new Performing Arts Center on our main campus, and a Wellness Center featuring a new weight room. We must be able to stay ahead of our students' needs, and these three projects are a clear priority. If you have not done so, please consider a gift to one of these studentcentered projects. We also continue to survey and listen to our constituents to constantly stay in tune with the pulse of our student experience.

Our second team goal focuses on Diversity and Inclusivity. We have developed a school definition of Diversity and Inclusivity and are actively working on programming to equip our educators, including coaches, with strategies to successfully embrace our diverse community; simultaneously, we aim to foster respect for this diversity. Providentially, our Catholic faith has beautiful language that helps guide our conversations, knowing that every human is created in our Creator's divine image and likeness and is therefore afforded absolute respect and dignity. As a third team goal, we are enhancing our educators' professional and spiritual development. We are allowing educators to grow in their faith by attending faith-based pilgrimages to Rome and Le Mans, the birthplace of the Congregation of Holy Cross.

FALL/WINTER 2023 CATHEDRAL HIGHLIGHTS

For us to continue using Greatness is Calling as our tagline, we must take seriously the development of a culture of continuous improvement. We believe that each day will be our best day yet and that tomorrow will be even better. But having hope without a plan is called a dream, and a plan without the funds is called a wish list. While I like dreams and wish lists, I prefer a well-thought-out and funded strategic plan. Once again, I implore you to support our planned projects if you can financially. Thank you for supporting this wonderful, faith-filled, and resilient school community. With her leading, we shall not tire – Ipsa duce non fatigarus! Faithfully,

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL Cathedral's innovative educators continue to motivate our students to answer the call to greatness every day! After another phenomenal Camp Cathedral summer (thank you, Director of Summer Programs Anthony Ernst), we kicked off the 2023-24 school year with nearly 1,200 students from 72 zip codes and 11 counties! It's humbling to know so many families trust us to educate the hearts and minds of their students. It's a commitment that we don't take lightly. I always tell students they are on the Hill because somebody cares about them. In return, we ask them to use their God-given talents to make our school, our community, and our world a better place. Speaking of making a positive difference in the community, we reinstated our Day of Service on Cathedral's 105th birthday. Special thanks to educator Catherine Wysocki for all her hard work organizing the day, and Director of Transportation Greg Bamrick for his assistance in securing transportation. It was a huge undertaking, but we were blessed to be able to serve at more than 50 agencies throughout central Indiana. I'm happy to report business is percolating in our student-run coffee shop, Johnny Mac's Coffeehouse. Our students take inventory, order supplies, make coffee and teas, and wait on customers. Johnny Mac's Coffeehouse is serving our students by providing high-level authentic opportunities to problem solve and gain practical experience that will serve them well, regardless of their future plans.

As this publication was being prepared, dozens of our students were engaged in internships during our third J-Term. In the past, internships have led to job opportunities for our students. Internships have also sparked interest in students that they never knew they had. J-Term, which is January 9-19 this year, allows Cathedral students to take a break from their usual classes and immerse themselves in a subject of their choosing. J-Term also allows our innovative educators to share their unique gifts and talents apart from the subjects they teach at Cathedral. Watch for pictures and details about this year's J-Term courses in the Spring/ Summer issue of Highlights. I am humbled and grateful to serve as your principal. The Cathedral family includes phenomenal students and families, incredibly generous supporters, and kind and zealous educators. As we enter 2024, we express gratitude for a successful first semester and set our sights on an even better second semester. We look forward to admitting the Class of 2028, for which we received a record number of applications, and hosting the graduation ceremony for the superb Class of 2024. Thank you for your continued support and encouragement. Please continue to keep dear old Cathedral in your prayers. God bless and Go Irish!

CATHEDRAL'S HOLY CROSS FOUNDATION GROWING STRONGER EVERY DAY "Holy Cross will grow like a mighty tree and constantly shoot forth new limbs whose branches will produce others." - Blessed Basil Moreau With great joy, Cathedral welcomed a Holy Cross Priest and a Holy Cross Brother, both with ties to the University of Notre Dame, to the Hill this year. Father Geoffrey Mooney, C.S.C., and Brother Matthew Rehagen, C.S.C., are math teachers who bring zeal to their classrooms and the campus. They and our Holy Cross Chaplain, Father Jomy Mathew, C.S.C., host weekly lunches in the dining hall. The lunches allow students and educators to get to know them and learn more about Holy Cross. Mass is offered several times daily, and Fr. Geoff and Fr. Jomy offer the Sacrament of Reconciliation throughout the semester. In the fall, Cathedral was blessed to host Holy Cross visitors from around the globe, including our beloved former Chaplain, Father Emmanuel Kallarackal. Our visitors hailed from Bangladesh, India, Italy, and South Bend. Cathedral educators enjoyed learning from them as much as they seemed to enjoy learning from us.

Also, as part of our Strategic Goal to enhance our educators' spiritual and professional development, Cathedral designed annual Holy Cross Formation experiences. This fall, five educators traveled to Rome, where they were Fr. Emmanuel's guests at the Holy Cross House. In addition, Cathedral sent six educators to Le Mans, France, the birthplace of the three branches of Holy Cross. (Please see the story on page 7.) Cathedral is proud of her Holy Cross roots and joyfully embraces the Holy Cross Motto, Ave Crux, Spes Unica Hail the Cross, our Only Hope.

HOLY CROSS PILGRIMAGES Cathedral Educators Embark on the Journey of a Lifetime One of the goals of Cathedral's Leadership team is to enhance the spiritual, professional, and well-being of our educators. Thanks to the generosity of Dan '70 and Betsy Brunette and the establishment of the Dan '70 and Betsy Brunette Educator Investment Award, Cathedral is able to provide life-changing Holy Cross pilgrimages for educators. Two groups were blessed to embark on their pilgrimage this fall. Five educators (Jennifer Hollis, Kathy Pivonka, Jonathan Kane, Kim Carver, and Joellen Desautels) traveled to Rome and stayed at the Holy Cross House with our wonderful former Chaplain, Father Emmanuel. The group attended daily mass and prayer in the chapel. Highlights included the Papal Audience and getting very close to Pope Francis. They also experienced Mass at St. Peter's Square in several languages. As wonderful as these moments were, they were not what stood out the most. “Father Emmanuel was gracious and energetic, making sure we experienced as much of our faith as possible,” says Carver. “However, the moments that stand out came in surprising moments which were small, peaceful, and beautiful, filled with those three words – happiness, love, and faith. From the beauty of the many churches and their collected pieces of art, true miracles created and curated by the Church, to the people of many nationalities praying, kneeling, and worshipping in different languages yet with the same fervent faith, there was never a moment when we were not reminded of the spiritual fervor which created the beauty we were surrounded by daily."

Our six Cathedral educators pose in front of the tomb of the Founder of Holy Cross Blessed Basil Moreau.

Six of our educators (Katie Lewis, Mark Matthews, Maribeth Cloud, Kathy Darnell, Jennifer Shevlin, and Anthony Ernst) traveled to France to visit the birthplace of Holy Cross. Among the highlights of their trip was praying at the tomb of Blessed Basil Moreau, the founder of the Congregation of Holy Cross. "I am so filled with joy and love after a fantastic ten days with the Cathedral Holy Cross Pilgrimage,” says Ernst. “Throughout the journey, I learned, experienced, and changed my perspective of how Holy Cross has been playing a part throughout my entire life. I was raised Catholic in Vincennes, which was influential in the story of Holy Cross coming to America. I was then the recipient of providence in being called to teach at Cathedral 22 years ago. Since that time, I have learned the history of Holy Cross with all my connections, and now I have gained so much more from my time in France! However, there is also a deep spiritual peace that I have gained… one that I have a hard time putting into words… it is truly holy. I cannot wait to share this experience with everyone… with my fellow educators… and most importantly with my students." More pilgrimages are being planned for the future, and we are immensely grateful to Dan '70 and Betsy Brunette for ensuring these life-changing experiences are available for our educators. “Zeal is the great desire to make God known, loved, and served, and thus to bring knowledge and salvation to others. Teachers who possess it fulfill the duties of their profession with enthusiasm, love, courage, and perseverance.” - Blessed Basil Moreau, Founder, Holy Cross

PEOPLE HELP THE PEOPLE A Reflection – By Caroline Schilling '24 I am a big fan of helping others. Strangers, friends, anyone. I want people to know they can count on me to help and that I am someone to lean on. This summer, I was blessed with the opportunity to do just this: help the people of Abakaliki, Nigeria – more specifically, the students and staff of Kassie Braun Memorial Schools (KBMS). KassieKares, a nonprofit organization created by Kassie's parents, Chalene and Dave, carries out a similar mission with the goal to help enhance lives worldwide. Kassie Braun '15 had a large passion for travel and using her blessings to help people all over the globe. This opportunity and contribution is one I do not take lightly.

welcome us to their school. Mr. Fogel, a science teacher, collaborated with students and staff to benefit their science program. You might be confused by the extent of the conversation Fogel and I had. It started with, "Hey Caroline, I want (which means need) you to go to Africa with me this summer." I was shocked! I didn't know exactly how to respond. This single statement was then followed by, "I will talk to your mom. Come see me this week, and we will continue this conversation." Little did I know, he had already talked to the Brauns, and would soon extend the invitation to my mom and me.

Chalene Braun said, "Like Kassie, who felt at one with the universe as she gazed at the stars from the deck of her global voyage, these trips remind us of the importance not only to send our positive thoughts to the universe and to God, but also to take action, as she did. Across continents, we connect, and in our shared acts of kindness, we become stars in a constellation of goodwill, illuminating the world with compassion." Earlier this year, Mr. Howard Fogel approached me with a specific favor. Fogel is someone I can lean on for help, and I first met him during my sophomore year chemistry class – a class that I had been nervous and hesitant about but turned out to be my best and favorite Cathedral class thus far. This specific interaction with Fogel would lead to the most fulfilling week of my life and relationships that will last me a lifetime. Upon arrival at the Kassie Braun Memorial School, students joined their guests to show them around and

the ability to embrace challenges and high expectations, think critically, and express my thoughts with clarity. These strengths allowed me to perform well not only in the courses required for my biological sciences major but also in the courses required for Notre Dame's core curriculum and for my theology minor." Konesco says she has always enjoyed most of her classes, so choosing her favorite Cathedral class is tough. She says she had many fantastic teachers at Cathedral, including Dr. Brooks, who nurtured her passion for biology. "I loved AP Biology with Dr. Brooks," Konesco says. "I remember being so excited in her class as I was introduced for the first time to some of the intricate mechanisms underpinning life." Anthony Ernst was also one of her favorite teachers. "I loved AP European History with Mr. Ernst, partly because European history is awesome and partly because Mr. Ernst is awesome. He is a great storyteller, and I remember always being engaged during his class."

ANABEL KONESCO '19 NAMED VALEDICTORIAN AT NOTRE DAME Says Rigorous Cathedral Courses Prepared Her Well Anabel Konesco '19 admits she harbored "nervous anticipation" when she embarked on her first semester at the University of Notre Dame in 2019. Her nerves quickly settled, however, when she realized how well her Cathedral teachers prepared her to excel. "During that first semester—thanks to AP Biology with Dr. (Aarti) Brooks, AP Chemistry with Mrs. (Vicki) Roessler, and AP Calculus with Mr. (Rick) Shadiow—I found myself already well-versed in many of the topics covered in my introductory-level courses," says Konesco. "While this familiarity provided a helpful starting point, as my courses delved into more specialized areas in subsequent semesters, I came to realize that the true strength of Cathedral's education extended beyond the mere acquisition of content. Cathedral instilled in me qualities far more valuable— 10

FALL/WINTER 2023 CATHEDRAL HIGHLIGHTS

Konesco graduated from the University of Notre Dame in January 2023 and was named Valedictorian of the Biological Sciences Class. She works as a medical scribe at Oak Street Health in Speedway and plans to begin medical school in the summer/fall of 2024. She's been accepted into the Indiana University School of Medicine and has interviewed with several other schools. She is still deciding on a speciality and says she's going into medical school with an open mind and many opportunities to explore various specialties. "Just like Cathedral, Notre Dame is a Holy Cross institution. At both schools, the nurturing of my heart was prioritized alongside that of my mind. Through my holistic, Holy Cross education, I have cultivated a profound and comprehensive understanding of human wellbeing and flourishing. This unique perspective has fostered within me a steadfast commitment to patientcentered care and will empower me to appreciate the multidimensional nature of health in each of my patients in whatever speciality I choose." It's quite clear that Anabel Konesco is an exceptional young lady who got her foundation at two extraordinary Holy Cross schools. Congratulations, Anabel!

KAYLA BROOKS '20 – WORLD TRAVELER DESTINED FOR GREATNESS Kayla Brooks '20 is quite the world traveler. She spent eight weeks this summer interning in London, England, for Welsh Labour, a Member of Parliament. Her long list of responsibilities included researching policy issues, responding to her parliament member's emails, and drafting and editing social media flyers, press releases, and other official statements. She also had the honor of observing and taking detailed notes during meetings with representatives from different parliamentary systems, such as the Trinidad and Tobago Parliament members. Brooks says, "Cathedral has a curriculum that leaves you more than prepared for college. I particularly flourished in my social studies and language arts classes, and

it was those classes where I developed a passion for civics and public policy. Classes like Three Sectors, AP Human Geography, US History, and AP Language and Composition were fundamental to my passion for civic engagement, international affairs, and public speaking." In addition to her time in London, Brooks traveled to Israel and the Palestinian territories on an IU-sponsored trip in August. Brooks says one of her favorite parts about the trip were being welcomed into a Kibbutz (an intentional community traditionally based on agriculture) and learning about the Israeli experience of living so close to Gaza. Her visit was roughly two months before the October 7 Hamas attack on Israel. "I'm so heartbroken for both Palestinians and Jews everywhere, and I hold compassion for both in this tragedy," says Brooks. "No innocent civilian should be a casualty in this fight. I hope there is a solution that centers humanity." Brooks is majoring in international relations with a concentration in human rights and international law, and journalism with a concentration in public relations. After graduating from IU in May 2024, she plans to pursue a Master of Public Administration and eventually work as a civil servant within a government department or agency. Your Cathedral family congratulates you, Kayla! We know you will continue to answer the call to greatness wherever you land. FALL/WINTER 2023 CATHEDRAL HIGHLIGHTS

ADMISSION UPDATE - WELCOME CLASS OF 2027! The Class of 2027 has 302 students who come from 70 different grade schools. Cathedral's entire student body of nearly 1,200 represents 164 different grade schools. Go Irish!

What attracted freshmen to Cathedral High School?

AB B IE YOUSAF '27 “I ask my parents all the time if there will be any way I can ever repay them for their sacrifices. Repeatedly, they reply with the same thing: “Live the happiest life you can.” Right now, what I can do to make my parents happy and make them regret nothing is to do well in school, and doing well in school will help me live a good, happy life. I believe Cathedral High School will help me do so and guide me to happiness in life.”

AMARIYA FORB E S ' 27

ASHTON BAKER ' 2 7

“I chose Cathedral High School for many reasons. One of them being how Cathedral High School is not just a school but a family. Cathedral has had my eyes fixated on it since I was a little girl. I have always envisioned being a part of the Irish family at the school. This is how much Cathedral has had an effect on me. I have always been welcomed by the hospitable and amazing community.”

“Cathedral's theme of Greatness is Calling propels me to do all things with determination. When I visited Cathedral, I witnessed all of these things and this is why our family chose Cathedral for the next four years.”

T H E HIG H S C HOOL SELEC TI O N PRO CESS The High School Selection Process is excellent preparation for the experience of choosing a college: the sooner you begin learning about your school options, the more opportunities you will have to experience campuses and find the right fit for your child! As early as kindergarten, students can attend Camp Cathedral on the Cathedral High School campus. It's a wonderful opportunity to get to know the school and meet great educators and coaches. Visit CampCathedral.com in February for a list of summer camps for the summer of 2024. Also, in elementary and middle school, consider attending school events to learn about the culture and traditions of the school. This can include theatre, choir, orchestra, band, and sports. Join the mailing and email lists of schools your family is interested in by contacting the admissions office. This will ensure you receive invitations to events and important information about the school. Cathedral's admissions office can be reached at admissions@gocathedral.com or 317.968.7309.

CHRISTMAS ON THE HILL A Miracle On 56th Street Friday, December 8, was a magical day on the Hill. After our All-School Mass for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, Cathedral hosted her first-ever Christmas on the Hill. Roughly 300 kindergarten through third-grade students from Enlace Academy came to Cathedral to decorate cookies, play games, see some of their favorite cartoon characters, and meet Santa and Mrs. Claus. Members of the Classes of 2023 and 2024 were paired with a student, while underclassmen helped at different stations throughout the day. Each Enlace student left the Hill with a gift and a heart full of Christmas spirit. Cathedral students also enjoyed the day of hands-on, authentic learning and sharing the joy of Christmas with the Enlace students. We thank educators Lisa Finn, Katie Lewis, and Aly Saum '12 Weaver for coordinating such an amazing day. We'd also like to thank Andrew Christiansen '99 and The Crabby Apple Family Orchard and Market for their generosity. In addition, thank you to our friends at Indy Characters & More LLC, who added so much joy to the day. It's hard to capture the magic of Christmas on the Hill in a few pictures, so we encourage you to scan the QR code to watch a heartwarming video created by educator Marc Quaranta and his broadcast students.

ANS W ER I NG TH E C A LL TO GRE AT N E SS Congratulations to Ted Karras '11 and Terry McLaurin '14 on being nominated for the NFL Walter Payton Man of the Year! Each NFL team selects one player for the award, and two of this year's nominees are members of the Cathedral family! Karras and McLaurin represent the Holy Cross Value of Excellence on the football field and, more importantly, in their communities. The Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year Award is the NFL's most prestigious honor. It acknowledges NFL players who excel on the field and demonstrate a passion for creating a lasting positive impact, beyond the game, in their communities. The Bengals nominated Karras for his work with Village of Merici, Inc. Village of Merici is a non-profit living community and service provider for adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Karras is the creator of The Cincy Hat and The Indy Hat, with all the proceeds from hat sales going to the Village of Merici. He works closely on this endeavor with another Cathedral graduate, Matt Renie '11. Renie's mom is the Executive Director of the Village of Merici. McLaurin founded the Terry McLaurin Foundation, which provides educational and social support, health and wellness assistance, and mentorship to aid children in succeeding in school and society. the foundation site, they run outreach activities like the annual Terry McLaurin Birthday Celebration and events celebrating back to school, Thanksgiving, and the Christmas season, and additionally have launched the "Dream Catchers Fund." Dream Catchers helps fulfill special requests for disadvantaged kids that most take for granted. This includes sports equipment, a band instrument, art supplies, dance lessons, or even college application fees. As this publication was going to print, we learned that Karras won the fan vote! As a result, the Village of Merici will receive a $35,000 donation! Congratulations to Karras and the Village of Merici! The NFL will recognize the nominees during the week leading up to Super Bowl LVIII. The 2023 Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year winner will be announced during NFL Honors, a primetime awards special on CBS on Thursday, February 8. Also, each nominee will receive up to a $55,000 donation, and the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year winner will receive a $250,000 donation to the charity of his choice. Sports Wraps Boys Cross Country

The idea was to develop, improve, and compete. Cathedral High School boys cross country did all three in 2023, achieving an encouraging measure of postseason success with an eye on the future. “We grew as a team; we got better overall,” Jason Moyars said. Moyars, in his third and final season as the Irish boys cross country coach, said a young Cathedral team, made up largely of freshmen and sophomores, improved throughout the 2023 season and peaked as the season drew to a close. The Irish not only turned in a strong regular season with 13 runners registering personal bests at the All-Catholic Meet, but they also advanced through the Section 17 meet to qualify as a team for the Regional 4 meet. The team finished fifth at sectionals.

Girls Cross Country

“I couldn't be happier with how this year went,” said Head Coach Brian Gross. Irish girls cross country finished second in 2023 in the All-City Meet and third in the All-Catholic Meet before turning in an impressive performance in the sectional meet to advance to regionals. The Irish were led by a strong senior class, with Lucy Marquart '24 qualifying as an individual for the state meet. “They have had just such a phenomenal role in shaping and devising what our culture is in the program,” Gross said of the senior class. “That was the No. 1 success I'd say we had this year: Establishing a healthy culture that is trying to develop and help young ladies become lifelong runners. We're definitely on that track now and we're looking for that as a beacon of success.” "We have a number of outstanding young ladies,” Gross said. “It's just a tremendous opportunity to work with these kids. I'm excited for next year. If their best running happens in the next four years, we failed. We're looking at what our success looks like over the next 10 years."

Football

It's nothing new for Cathedral High School football to have a memorable and successful season. They yet again made a deep postseason run in 2023 and remained one of Indiana's premier high school football programs. “We're definitely in a healthy spot,” Irish football coach Bill Peebles '88 said. The Irish, who have won 14 Indiana state championships, finished the 2023 season 8-4, with all four losses to top teams in the state. They finished No. 4 in the Class 6A Indiana Football Coaches Association rankings and lost to Ben Davis, 27-24, in a Class 6A regional playoff. The Irish's four losses came to Ben Davis (No. 2 6A), Bishop Chatard (No. 1 3A), Center Grove (No. 1 6A) and Brownsburg (No. 3 6A). Ben Davis won the Class 6A state title and beat Center Grove in the semi-state round after beating Brownsburg in a sectional semifinal. Chatard won the Class 3A state title. “The three best teams in the state this year, we saw them all at one point or another,” Peebles said. “We were competitive and just fell short in all three situations.” The Irish won the Class 6A, Sectional 6 title with a 20-3 victory over Lawrence North.

Girls Golf

This was a good season and a good start. Cathedral High School girls golf had a competitive season under first-year coach Nick Jamell '13 in 2023, advancing to the second round of the postseason after a solid regular season. The Irish were a senior-laden team in 2023, and the experience mattered. "I think it was a really good first season as a head coach," Jamell said. "I can't ask for much more, I don't think." The Irish advanced to the regional tournament with a second-place finish in the Cathedral Sectional at Maple Creek, shooting 395 as a team and finishing two shots behind sectional champion Heritage Christian. The Irish ended the season the following week with a sixth-place 366 at the Lapel Regional at the Edgewood Golf Club.

Girls Soccer

This was one of the best seasons in program history by any measure. That was true for Cathedral High School girls soccer throughout the season, and it was true despite the Irish falling two victories short of their ultimate goal. “This team really accomplished quite a bit,” Irish girls soccer coach Marc Behringer '84 said. The Irish finished the 2023 season 15-5-2, ranked No. 6 in the Indiana Soccer Coaches Association Class 3A rankings. They won city, sectional, and regional titles before losing in the Class 3A semi-state round, 1-0, to Bloomington South. “It's a disappointment when you've got a team that's good enough to win the whole tournament at the end, but that's not always in your control,” Behringer said. “But this particular group did some really amazing things that no team that I've had before has done.” Behinger said of the semi-state loss, “My own view was we were the superior team in that particular match. That's the more difficult thing. Nothing directed poorly at Bloomington South at all—they did what they needed to do to win the match. All credit to them, but I've spoken to my players about it and they really did feel that, 'Boy, we at least should have won one more match and gotten to play in the final.''

Boys Soccer

The pain was real. The success and progress were, too. Cathedral High School boys soccer took yet another strong step forward in 2023. The result was a wildly successful postseason run that ended in disappointment but with perspective, too. “It's disappointing on one hand, but overall, you want to focus on how far we got this year and all the positives and successes,” Irish boys soccer coach Joel Russell said. The positives and successes were many. The Irish not only finished the 2023 season 17-5-2, but they also advanced to the Class 3A state championship game – their first state-title game appearance since 2010. They lost there, 2-0, to two-time defending state champion Noblesville. “There are exciting times ahead for us,” Russell said. “We like what we have coming back. We're going to miss the seniors we lost. These guys have been with me all four years. Now you start to talk about the transition of the program.” “The question is, can we continue to be at the standard or raise the standard that we want to set as a program? We're taking those strides to be the top boys high school program in the state of Indiana.”

Boys Tennis Cathedral High School boys tennis, a young team playing a typically difficult schedule, turned in yet another competitive season with postseason success in 2023. That made it a satisfying season. It also made it one that could lead to a strong future. “It was a solid season,” Irish tennis coach Jeff Giles said. The Irish played 12 of 14 matches against Top 25 teams in 2023, finishing with a 12-10 overall record. They won the Section 27 tournament, marking their first sectional title since 2010. They beat Covenant Christian, 5-0, in the Region 7 semifinal before losing to longtime rival and perennial power North Central, 3-2, in the regional final. “We played some really strong competition again, as is the case every year,” Giles said. “We just kind of battled through those and toughened ourselves for the postseason.” The Irish not only won the City title again in 2023, they finished second in the Buckley Division at the prestigious 25th John Shirley Men's Tennis Invitational at North Central. They also finished as the runner-up in the early September Carroll Invitational.

Girls Volleyball Cathedral High School girls volleyball, a longtime state power, reestablished that reputation in 2023. The Irish did so against one of the state's best schedules and bonded memorably as a team. That made the season special as the Irish moved back to state prominence. “I think we moved the needle,” Karrie Quenichet said. The Irish girls volleyball program in Quenichet's second season as head coach did that and more, finishing with a 29-5 record and advancing to the regional tournament at Greenfield-Central. The Irish lost in a semifinal there, 3-2, to Yorktown. “We didn't want to disappoint the Cathedral community,” Quenichet said. “They've all been so supportive because of the way we played and how fun we were to watch. People were feeling like I was, they wanted it to last longer.” The Irish finished the regular season No. 2 in the Indiana High School Volleyball Coaches Association Class 4A rankings.
