IHC Family News We Celebrate the B’nai Mitzvah of: Delilah Hastings, who will be called to the Torah on January 13, 2024. She is a seventh grade student at Carmel Middle School. Delilah enjoys crafts, ice skating, playing viola, and talking with her friends. Her parents are Sara & Jeff Hastings. She has an older brother- Gabriel. Delilah’s grandparents are Judi & Chet Hastings.
We Celebrate: Sharon & David Baldwin, who became grandparents to Benjamin Parker Baldwin, born on October 12. Benjamin is also greatgrandson of Thelma Feldman. Benjamin's parents are Andrew and Jeannie Baldwin. The birth of Naomi Claire, daughter of Abbe & Evan Bayless, on November 30. Naomi's grandparents are Patty & Gary Goodman. The Jewish calendar records four specific days designed to be celebrated as “New Year’s Days”: The beginning of Tishrei - Rosh Hashanah The date for the tithing of animals The month of our liberation from Egypt The beginning of the cycle of growth for the trees. These dates collectively help us think about the themes of rebirth, renewal, and recycling which exist all around us. The world pulses through cycles of growth and decay, life and death. In truth, we know that our lives are governed by the same principles, although we spend a tremendous amount of energy denying it. Our bodies and our souls need rest, renewal, and downtime in order to function most clearly, and to bring enthusiasm and purpose to our work and our relationships. In her beautiful book, Wintering, Katherine May writes, “Life meanders like a path through the woods. We have seasons when we flourish and seasons when the leaves fall from us, revealing our bare bones. Given time, they grow again.“
Judaism’s great gift is to put us in greater contact with the seasons of our lives Kabbalah Shabbat’s joy, Passover’s phrenetic song and Hanukkah’s warm glow. These are times when we seek the creative energy and symbiosis of friends, family and treasured colleagues. Yet there are other times - Shabbat afternoon stretching out into the evening, Sukkot’s intimacy and warmth, Elul’s month of reflection, even Tisha B’Av’s sorrow, and the Counting of the Omer, when we… winter. These are times when we retreat into a more private space to refuel, to nourish through self-care, and to center ourselves. The beginning of a new secular year provides us the same access to a new beginning, and a new chance to restore. Perhaps for you this will be a month of connection with friends and family. And perhaps for you this is the time of wintering. Whatever it needs to be for you, may you feel your soul being nourished, and may you enter into 2024 feeling more ready to share your gifts with your community and the world.

Hiddur Mitzvah: Beautifying the Mitzvah: Glass Seder Plate Sunday, March 10, 2:00-4:00pm Join us for a session to beautify/enhance Passover with a beautiful fused glass seder plate. IHC Foundation: Growth for Now and the Future
In 1856, a small group of Jewish families desired to build a spiritual home for Reform Jews in Indianapolis. Their hunger for a Jewish community resulted in individuals coming together to provide financial generosity and a volunteering spirit. The combined labors of these visionaries created Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation (IHC) -- a place for praying and learning, celebrating and comforting, playing and eating … together. After 167 years, IHC remains a vibrant center for Jewish life in Indianapolis, thanks to the vision of those founding families and the contributions of those who came after them. Nowhere is our temple’s long, deep history more prevalent than the hallway lined with pictures of past Confirmation and Consecration classes, former clergy and leadership. These snapshots remind us of where our congregation was, and what motivates us to keep growing. To further insure the temple’s growth well into the future, the IHC Foundation (Foundation) was formed in 1977. The Foundation is a Section 501(c)(3) tax-qualified organization. Its purpose is to hold, invest, and grow assets exclusively for the benefit of IHC.
In conjunction with IHC’s annual operating funds, our congregation is fortunate to receive Foundation funds to support programs and operations. For example, distributions from Foundation’s restricted funds support the Jewish Learning Program, social justice, building operations, IHC Circles, as well as support for interfaith individuals and families within IHC. IHC can also pursue sacred friendships with our multifaith partners in the greater Indianapolis area. These opportunities, paired with support for necessary building repairs and maintenance (such as contributing to the new roof or parking lot renovations) guarantee IHC will be here for your children, your grandchildren, and generations of people to come. As you map out your charitable giving in the year ahead, please know a gift to IHC Foundation is another way to support your Jewish home. Kabbalat Shabbat service Fridays at 6:15pm Shabbat Morning Service Saturdays at 10:30am Join us for Oneg Shabbat following our Friday evening services (or before services on the second Shabbat of the month). It is a mitzvah to sponsor an Oneg Shabbat, whether it is for a special occasion (b'nai mitzvah/baby naming/anniversary) or just because you want to step up to help! Shabbat Morning Torah Study Saturdays at 9:00am Led by IHC clergy, the group is guided through the weekly Torah portion text seeking understanding of the teaching for the time and discussing its message for today.
