Haftarah Trope Thursdays, 12:00-1:00pm March 3, 10, 17 & 24

Cantor Marer will teach the ancient chant for Haftarah portions, the writings of the Prophets. Learn the trope as it relates to and mirrors that of Torah trope, both in meaning and melody. This class is open to all regardless of musical background.

Taste of Judaism: A URJ Course Tuesdays, 7:00-8:30pm, March 1, 8 & 15

This is a class about which to tell your neighbors and work colleagues. This course is designed for the person just beginning to learn about Judaism and who has had no prior learning or sustained interaction with the Jewish community.

What is

and how do we celebrate?

Purim is a holiday based on the story of Esther from the section of the Tanakh known as Ketuvim (Writings).

It is one of the five megillot (scrolls) along with Ruth, Lamentations, Song of Songs, and Ecclesiastes. Each of these megillot is assigned to a holiday, yet Esther specifically mentions the celebration of Purim. However, as you might guess, there are scholarly debates about the true historical background of this holiday.

Traditionally, Purim is celebrated as the holiday in which we rejoice that the Jews of Persia, in the 4th century BCE, were saved from death by the heroic acts of Queen Esther and Mordechai. The evil Haman (insert “boo”s here) had convinced King Ahasuerus to allow him to “get rid of a problem” in his kingdom. The aloof king gave Haman the power to do so, perhaps not realizing that this meant the genocide of all the Jews in the kingdom on the 13th day of Adar. Ultimately, Mordechai and Esther are able to reveal to the king that she, his beloved wife, is Jewish and that the evil Haman (“boo”) was the one behind the plan. Haman (“boo”) is hung from the gallows that he erected for Mordechai. Although the king’s edict cannot be reversed, the Jews are able to defend themselves.

Thus, on the 14th day of Adar (and the 15th in walled cities), all Jews are supposed to rejoice and send gifts to their neighbors and to the poor. The story of Esther is retold – complete with the command to drown out the name of Haman (which is why we say “boo”).

While the Mishnah gave us the rule that the megillah of Esther should be read in public, the Talmud added that the scroll should be read in public with drinking wine, making merry, and giving gifts (which we read in the scroll of Esther, but there is some question to the dating of this section). We are told to drink so much that we cannot tell the difference between Haman and Mordechai. Since the 13th century, Jews began dressing up and masquerading.

Around the 15th century, the practice of baking hamentashen (Haman’s pockets) began in Europe. The performance of silly plays called Purim shpiels began in the 18th century. Since the 20th century, we have seen street parades in Israel and Purim Carnivals in synagogues across North America.

At IHC, we celebrate Purim as a holiday for every age, yet appropriately for each age.

We typically have a Text Study session on the eve of Purim (this year Wednesday, March 16), an Adult Purim celebration (this year, Friday, March 18 following services), and a family friendly Purim shpiel and carnival that is held as a fundraiser by our youth groups. This year, it is scheduled for Sunday, March 20 but currently, due to COVID-19, it is for religious school students only. Our Sisterhood enables us all to have the sweetness of hamentashen – through their sale of these tasty treats. This year, we will also have our “Jewish Living Holiday Series” class on Purim on Thursday, March 3.

We Celebrate the Bar/Bat Mitzvah of: Maxine Mintz will be called to the Torah on February 19, 2022.

Maxine is a seventh grader and high honor roll student at Creekside Middle School. She plays euphonium for Marching Band and Pep Band, and is a member of Tri-M Music Honor Society. Maxine's parents are Lindsey and Jason Mintz. She has an older sister Rachel and younger brother Bernie.

Sam Grant will be called to the Torah on February 19, 2022.

Sam’s favorite place on earth is GUCI. He loves playing football, basketball, golf, and Taekwondo. The seventh grader also plays alto and baritone saxophone in the Creekside Band at Creekside Middle School. Sam serves as the president of JIFTY at IHC. His parents are Debby Barton Grant and Scott Grant. He has two older brothers- Jonah and Ben. Lucy Goldstein will be called to the Torah on February 26, 2022.

Lucy is a seventh grader and honor roll student at Westfield Middle School. She enjoys soccer and playing clarinet. Lucy also likes doing puzzles and building with Legos. Her parents are Brooke and Rick Goldstein.

Lucy has an older brother Joshua.

Owen Simons will be called to the Torah on March 5, 2022.

Owen is a seventh grader at St. John’s School in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Owen enjoys sports, especially football and volleyball. He plays piano and is involved in math club at school. Owen's hobbies include cooking, volunteering with a dog rescue, and traveling around Puerto Rico. His parents are Mary and Eric Simons. He has a younger brother Ari. Emma Meisner will be called to the Torah on March 12, 2022.

Emma is a seventh grader and honor roll student at Clay Middle School. She is an avid runner and participates in cross country and track. Emma also loves baking and volunteering as a member of the National Charity League Carmel chapter.

Her parents are Christopher and Rochelle Meisner. She has a twin brother Benjamin and older brother Maxwell.

Benjamin Meisner will be called to the Torah on March 12, 2022.

Benjamin is a seventh grader at Clay Middle School who participates in soccer as well as cross country, track and basketball. Benjamin is on honor roll and was a top 20 runner in Hamilton County for cross country. His parents are Christopher and Rochelle Meisner. He has a twin sister Emma and older brother Maxwell.

The season of giving extended past Hanukah for the Mitzvah Stitchers. In mid-December the group stitched and donated dozens of items to Indiana Youth Group, Hooverwood Living, The Newcomer School, and The Abbie Hunt Bryce Home. Your Board President Eloise Paul

As 2022 begins...I hope this letter finds you well and staying warm.

I’ll admit there have been more challenges as board president than I ever imagined. Here is one quote that has been helpful to me as we navigated 2021: “People often avoid making decisions out of fear of making a mistake. Actually, the failure to make decisions is one of life’s biggest mistakes.”

You can play a role in helping us move forward in a positive direction: · Please make sure you’ve completed your 2022 commitment and returned it to our office. · Attend our virtual programming—and as soon as conditions permit, in person services, programs, educational opportunities, and events. · Reach out to our committees! You can find information on our website. Our Engagement Committee continues to develop programs based on input from all of you! · Let us hear from you so we can meet your needs! Sisterhood and Brotherhood want you too!

I feel like our heads have been repeatedly spinning as we have had to deal with new information and constantly change course.

We have striven to steer a straight path forward based on informed decisions only to find everything upended again and again.

In closing, I hope that before the end of my term, I will be able to meet in person with our board of directors! It’s hard to believe we’ve only gathered in person three times since I began as your president—and yet, your board has accomplished so much. Kudos to them for their hard work.

We need to be ready for anything. I guess that is life in a pandemic! None of us has a crystal ball (even our Rabbis, so they say….) and so week by week we’ve been making decisions based on what we believe is in our congregants’ best interest regarding health and safety.

My wish for 2022 is to see more of you in person at our Shabbat Services. I’m ready to see you and share a joyful Oneg together.

Although virtual platforms have kept many of us connected, there is nothing so comforting and supportive as seeing each other in our beautiful sanctuary and lifting our voices in song and prayer together.

And yet, we cannot forget the importance of relationship and connection. Those have been hard things to balance and yes, we’ve had to change direction as our environment has changed.

OFTEN!

Rabbi Benzion Klatzko said, “Judaism is not a religion, it’s a relationship.”

Well, to me it’s both.

As I look forward to 2022, it’s finally sunk into me that COVID-19 will be with us in one form or another for the foreseeable future. But I am grateful for the relationships with you I have built over the there are several positives. course of 2021 and look forward to doing more so in 2022, whether on Zoom or in person (fingers crossed). And our amazing new (still “new” until March when he begins his second year) Executive Director, Pete Smithhisler along with the office staff, continue to guide us and run our building.

A Message from...

Your Associate Rabbi Jordana Chernow-Reader

Since the pandemic began I have been asked a version of this question several times. The question is: “How do I live with all of the uncertainty in our lives right now?”

With the rising and falling rates of the pandemic, we are living in challenging and unpredictable times. It can feel like as soon as life begins to go back to “normal” another new variant comes along. When this happens, in person activities become limited and we are filled once again with uncertainty about the weeks and months ahead.

So the question remains, how do we live our daily lives when we do not know what the future will bring. Luckily for us, Judaism provides answers to this question. One approach to living with unpredictability comes in the form of the Hebrew word “hineini.”

“Hineini” can be translated as “I am here/present/ready to take on what is being asked of me.” This word is used often in significant moments in the Torah. For example, in Exodus 3, when God calls out to Moses in the burning bush, Moses answers “hineini.”

What I find the most interesting and relevant to our lives today, is that Moses says “hineini” to God without knowing what is being asked of him. It is inspiring to me, that Moses says “hineini” without knowing what the path in front of him will be. As God explains to Moses that he is being asked to free the Israelite people from slavery, then Moses says “who am I.” After Moses wonders if he is ready for the challenge ahead of him, he becomes an icon of leadership in Jewish tradition.

I think this is the same process that many of us go through in our lives. Often we need to be ready for what is coming before we know what is being asked of us. When this happens, we can wonder, who am I or how am I going to rise to this new challenge? We might not be sure we have the inner strength to meet the unexpected, but like Moses we find a way to say hineini.

We do not know what lies ahead of us or what the next months will bring, but I know that together we can get through it. I have been so impressed in my time at IHC by ways this community has responded to challenges. Both in person and virtually, we have come together to pray, to study, and for lifecycle events. The IHC community continues to celebrate Jewish holidays, to support each other in difficult moments, and to share in each other’s joys.

The IHC committees do inspiring work and the IHC Board guides our congregation building for a thriving future. The IHC clergy and staff make it a priority to be hineini for our congregational family.

Whatever the future brings, we will be hineini for ourselves and each other, and we can get through it together. I believe that as the IHC community, we are hineinu – we are here/present/ready to meet the future together.

"Are you ready to go?”

Anyone who’s ever had a sibling, been in a relationship, had kids, or attempted to get a group moving understands that this question is almost always answered with “just about.” Or worse, “yes, but.”

Our ideas and definitions of “being ready” vary widely. When starting a project or activity, I don’t always feel “ready to go.” But I push through and find the energy and focus necessary to complete it.

So, my fellow Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation families, colleagues, and friends I ask you, “Are you ready?”

To connect with others in purposeful action that helps advance our Jewish ideals?

To build bridges into our community; extending our reach to others who need us?

To focus our energy in addressing critical issues and needs within our own community?

To support each other as we face individual challenges?

To respond to various calls for action, to crisis, to friends in need?

I am thankful that I have talented clergy partners to navigate this leadership journey. I am grateful for the vision, direction, and support provided by our board of directors, most especially our president Eloise Paul. My colleagues are truly dedicated to the future success of IHC. They make coming to work a joyful experience.

I appreciate and value each of you. Your investment in IHC has created a wonderful legacy that we will pass to the next generation. You matter…in all ways.

A Temple History: 2020 This March marks two years since our world changed in ways we never could have imagined.

As we reflect and remember the lives lost and the lives forever altered during the COVID-19 pandemic, we also look back at how the IHC community rose to the challenges of unprecedented times. IHC librarian Evelyn Pockrass recalls what unfurled within our congregation in the year 2020.

March

On March 4, a message was sent to IHC congregants noting the congregation was taking steps to be certain the building's surfaces were cleaned thoroughly and that our leadership was monitoring the situation closely. We were told that, as of February 28, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had said that currently there was “low” risk for an outbreak in the United States. Within a short period of time, circumstances changed completely and the members of IHC, along with the rest of the country, were about to experience a once-in-a-century event: a global pandemic.

By March 12, we learned that beginning Sunday, March 15, all programs in the building would be suspended until April 12.

It was hoped that programming would be resumed by mid-April. The following day we were told the Early Childhood Center (ECC), the Jewish Learning Program (Religious School), all Youth Groups, task forces, and committee meetings would be going online if possible. The building was being closed to all congregants and visitors.

IHC became a virtual congregation on March 19. “We Are Here for You.” became an oft-repeated sentiment not only for our members but throughout the city, state, and country. We were going to help “flatten the curve” (remember that phrase?).

Starting March 20, services would be live-streamed.

Hoosiers, who were not in “essential” work as defined by the state, were asked to stay home. IHC staff would be working remotely wherever possible. The last full workday in the building was March 16, but staff would be available by phone or email. Leadership would be working on new and creative ways to maintain their connection with congregants. They were adhering to the guidelines of the CDC and in touch with congregations in Indianapolis as well as congregations within the Reform Movement.

Cantor Aviva Marer arranged for a virtual Meditative Musical Healing event on March 24. Rabbi Roxanne Shapiro gave a tutorial on using Zoom, the online connection program new to many but the link for individuals and institutions to converse with family, friends, congregants, and business associates. Modern technology became a lifeline in the months to come.

April

The curve did not flatten, and in April there was a flurry of cancellations of in-person programs and events: b’nai mitzvah celebrations had to be re-thought and rescheduled, LAF (Life After Fifty) programming went online, Mitzvah Stitchers and others were sewing masks, ECC teachers were making videos that could be accessed at any time. Parents and families of school-age children were encountering the challenges and opportunities of having their children learning virtually at home.

Often adults were homebound, too, working remotely, with some facing temporary or permanent layoffs.

Gradually, we were hearing of more and more cases of citizens contracting, some dying, of what came to be called COVID19. But April also brought the celebration of Passover. How could we observe the family oriented seder? Some followed CDC guidelines of not having indoor gatherings of more than 10 people; others experimented with a virtual seder in the hope that next year they would be able to gather in person again. The IHC YouTube channel allowed staff and congregants to display skills by offering several videos about the holiday.

May

May brought warmer weather, a brief reprieve in the COVID-19 surge and the hope for the easing of restrictions such as mask wearing and social distancing. Staff would come to the building more frequently but, aside from financial business concerns, most staff worked primarily from home. Activities such as Shabbat services, Jewish Learning Program, Hebrew Intensives, and Derech Torah continued online. Meetings and programs were held virtually. That included most committees, Jewish Book Club, and Adult Education classes. On Sunday, May 17, IHC’s annual meeting was conducted virtually. Marc Katz was our outgoing president and Eloise Paul became the new IHC president for the Board of Directors.

A COVID-19 Emergency Fund appeal began to help sustain the congregation financially. At the end of the month, on May 29, we held our farewell Shabbat for Rabbi Scott Fox who was leaving for a pulpit in Long Beach, California. An online Confirmation and Shavuot service took place May 30.

June

In June, President Eloise Paul encouraged congregants to join committees, Stefanie Shapiro joined the staff as the Learning Experience Coordinator (a combination of a few past positions: including coordinating the Derech Torah program – Debbi Kasper had retired from that post – and the Hebrew Intensives setup). Some committee meetings and Thursday “Coffee With the Clergy” meetings were scheduled in June as we took a little breather and started wondering in earnest about fall programming, particularly when the Early Childhood Center would reopen and the plan for the upcoming High Holy Days.

July

We looked to the Back to the Building committee for guidance.

At first they met weekly and later were able to hold fewer meetings. Members of the committee measured and assessed the needs for the sanctuary to be safe for the clergy to conduct services and with a limited number of attendees (based on local governmental directives). They arranged for N95 masks, trained volunteers as greeters, initiated policies about entering and exiting the building for the ECC to reopen, etc.

In July, we welcomed Rabbi Jordana Chernow-Reader as our new Associate Rabbi. President Paul let us know that a strategic planning committee had been formed and was conducting a listening campaign throughout July. One or more of each of these meetings would be focused on individual topics: cultural arts, engagement, fiscal, Israel, lifelong learning, philanthropy, social justice, and worship/ritual. Sisterhood had a cocktails and conversation event that featured a Woman’s Survival guide, there was an adult education course on prayerbook Hebrew, and Tot Shabbat was held online every Friday morning. IHC was looking for a new accounting assistant. Adrienne Aronson-White kindly took on that position the following month.

On July 11, a message from President Paul informed us that the listening campaign clearly reflected congregants’ wishes for more transparency and better communications. We had applied for a government loan. Federal requirements kept changing, but thanks to the efforts of Kathy Madvig, Accounting Manager, we did receive the loan. It had cut expenses by several hundred thousand dollars but, were still looking to end the year about $300,000 in the red. Therefore, we were having another appeal for funds and already had a challenge grant.

August

August saw the re-opening of both the Gift Shop, with concierge service available, and the ECC. It was announced that all High Holy Day services would be virtual. For the Yom Kippur Yizkor service, Brotherhood would make the Elmer Wolhfeld Memorial Book accessible online with a limited number of printed copies. High Holy Day prayerbooks could be borrowed from the temple. Due to COVID-19, the Family Promise program (Interfaith Hospitality Network) could not be offered in the building, but apartments were being secured for homeless families and we were asked to donate specific items.

Angela Eubanks became the interim director of the ECC (Taryn Fartouh had resigned). Other programs continued online, mostly on Zoom. Happy news – on August 1, the congregation celebrated another previously postponed event, the baby naming of Sofia Eve Marer (now a one-year-old), daughter of Jim and Cantor Aviva Marer.

September

September featured more online offerings including all sessions of the Jewish Learning Program. For the upcoming start of 5781, our resilient, creative clergy and staff provided congregants and the community with a virtual Selichot service featuring Nefesh Mountain. There were several online High Holy Day services, four drive-in parking lot Shofar services at various sites in Indianapolis and Carmel, and a Yom Kippur Healing Service, among others.

Communal services at the North and South cemeteries were not held.

Virtual programming flourished, as did COVID-19 – another surge of cases developed. Despite successful results of initial vaccine testing by certain pharmaceutical companies, it still would be a while before we would see the end of this pandemic. Nonetheless, we celebrated Sukkot and Simhat Torah online in October encompassing a Sisters in the Sukkah event, new Lunch and Learn programs, a pet blessing Shabbat, Music in Bloom, youth group activities and programs.

On October 21, President Paul and Rabbi Krichiver let us know that Dan Silien, our executive director, had informed the Board he would be leaving. Dan sent a note to the congregation thanking us for the work we do and for the opportunity to have been a part of IHC for the past few years.

His responsibilities were split between staff and laity for the next several months. Matt Hastings, Youth Engagement Coordinator assumed the main responsibility for building issues. Eloise Paul took on many of the other questions that arose during this period while a search committee worked online to find candidates for the executive director position.

Programs and activities moved along at a steady pace despite all the recent changes. Families of b’nai mitzvah children were given the option of having in-person observances with restrictions on the number of attendees, the requirement to wear masks and social distance. Others opted to wait until sometime in 2021 when they hoped restrictions would be eased.

There were four weekly programs on "Jews and Race: What Black Lives Matter Means to Jews", starting October 29, and in November Rabbi Krichiver participated in a discussion about Indiana Jews versus the KKK. An Oneg Shabbat Zoom games session was held after the Thanksgiving Shabbat service. A traditional Thanksgiving celebration itself was not the usual holiday gathering for family and friends.

To further the goal of being here for one another, there was a series of adult education offerings entitled "Audacity of Hope: Using the Psalms to Connect", starting December 1. The Brit Olam committee sponsored a program on "Eviction: Poverty and Profit in the American City". LAF offered Around the Jewish Table programming and a Hanukkah blood drive was scheduled, Sisterhood held a Super Sunday in-store shopping event at the Gift Shop. A Hanukkah drive-thru happened in the South parking lot where sweets and treats were distributed. WFYI, the local PBS station, aired a documentary, “To Know Your Neighbors,” that included a mention of IHC. As the virtual Hanukkah celebrations faded and the secular year drew to a close, the clergy, staff and the board of directors wished the entire IHC family a happy, healthy and safe New Year. Now we could reflect on what an unusual year 2020 had been, what 2021 would be like with the onset of mass vaccinations, and wonder if the pandemic ever would end. What challenges would lie ahead for ourselves, our country and the world as we entered 2021? ~Watch for A Temple History: 2021 in a future issue of the Kulanu.

Temple Library The Hebrew calendar year 5782 is a leap year and that means there are two months with the name of Adar. To differentiate, we refer to them as Adar I and Adar II. What do we do when the fourteenth of Adar is the date we normally celebrate and observe Purim?
