The entire IHC community is invited to take part in this wonderful evening which will include a special guest speaker during Shabbat services.

IHC Family News We Celebrate the B'nai Mitzvah of: James Beisel will be called to the Torah on August 6, 2022. He is entering eighth grade at Fall Creek Junior High. James loves playing soccer, bike riding, and golfing. James participates in the school robotic and math club.

He likes collecting things such as trading cards and fidgets. James is on the Honor Roll.

His teachers recognized him as student of the month for his positive attitude and love for learning. His parents are Katherine and Jason Beisel. James has two younger sisters-Olivia and Sara.

Joel Kaprove will be called to the Torah on August 13, 2022. He is entering seventh grade at Carmel Middle School. He enjoys spending time with friends and watching movies. Joel was proud to be selected to give the class speech for his fifth grade graduation. His father is Matthew Kaprove. His mother is Amanda Lucas. Joel has two sisters-Bethanie and Caroline.

Simon Kahn will be called to the Torah on August 20, 2022. He is entering seventh grade at Creekside Middle School where he has had many academic and leadership successes. He plays the trombone for the Creekside Band.

Simon enjoyed his first season running track, but basketball remains his favorite way to spend his time, along with spending time with his friends in person or on FaceTime. His proud parents are Brian and Emily Kahn. Simon has two brothers-Noah and Eli. His grandparents are Shelley and Marshall Kahn, Ellen and Bob Briggs, as well as, Rose and Phil Quandt.

A Message From Your Clergy This year. I want to look at the story through the lens of failure. I don’t want to see Abraham as the faithful servant of God, whose blind obedience is rewarded with God’s love. Instead, let us explore Abraham’s flaws, his failings and his misconceptions. His is a failure to listen, a failure to advocate for his family.

He fails in his understanding of God’s command, and he fails his son completely. They never speak to each other again.

“Do not raise your hand against the boy, for now I know that you fear God” Once again, we turn our thoughts to the end of the long days of summer, towards new beginnings of the fall and a new Jewish year.

I look forward to just about everything about our High Holy Days, even grappling with challenging texts which always seem to shed new light on the problems plaguing our world. But there is one text I struggle with so much each year, I will admit to wondering, from time to time, why we continue to read it.

God calls to Abraham and says – you know that son I finally granted you? The one who is the very embodiment of the promise I just made to you that your future is secure?

Well, now I want you to willingly give that son back to Me, as a test.

This is a terrible deal, Abraham. We implore you not to take it. Does God really demand these sorts of tests of loyalty? Are there deeper layers to uncover, which might soothe the shock we feel? In one of my favorite interpretations of this text, we are told that Abraham has failed, already and completely from the first moment by misunderstanding what God is asking him to do.

In the text God says, “Go to the land of Moriah, and offer [Isaac] up, lift him up to one of the heights I will show you.” Understandably, Abraham assumes his child is to be sacrificed. But what God actually asks him to do is to elevate him. The verb “to slaughter for sacrifice” doesn’t show up until Abraham reaches for his knife atop the mountain.

The Sages point out that wherever in Torah the word "Lord" (YHVH) is used, it refers to God’s attribute of mercy. And wherever God (Elohim) is used, it refers to the attribute of justice. They remind us that these two divine attributes are both holy. But without the one balancing the other our world could not exist. A world ruled by strict justice could not account for the second chances each of us needs and deserves.

And a world ruled only by mercy would never hold us accountable for our actions. We need both.

In the first half of the Akedah narrative, the term used for God is Elohim, the God of justice and retribution (Gen 22:1-10). In the latter half, YHVH, Lord is used to refer to the Divine (ibid 11-19). Each appears exactly five times in the text. It is as if the Torah is communicating something to us between the lines of the story. This lesson weaves itself throughout the tale, and illuminates something truly special – something we are desperate to hear on Rosh Hashanah.

The sages see the Akedah as a story of God’s presence moving from the Throne of Justice to the Throne of Mercy. Abraham’s actions move God away from Elohim and towards YHVH; God realizes that while we all may deserve strict judgement, that we are worthy of divine mercy, as is everyone. God’s mercy inspires our own mercy – for ourselves, and for one another. Only by showing mercy – compassion, empathy, thoughtfulness to one another, do we move this world a notch closer to perfection. And in that mission, there is no room for misunderstanding.

High Holy Days 5783: Five Things to Know Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation wants to make sure our members and their guests are ready to enter the year 5783 in a manner that is more similar to pre-pandemic times.

Below are five things you need to know about marking the High Holy Days with IHC. Our services will be offered in person and on livestream via the IHC website or Facebook Page.

Select services will also be broadcast live on WICR 88.7-FM. We have made the decision that everyone must be registered to attend in person services for the High Holy Days. Registration will not be available at the door. Unregistered guests are welcomed to join us via livestream. We thank you in advanced for understanding these safety and security protocols.

Online registration will open to members in good standing starting August 22. Registration will be open to the public starting September 12. Use ShulCloud to complete your online registration.

Who Is IHC? A Spotlight on Our Volunteers IHC is nothing without our members, especially those who tirelessly put in the time and effort into our community.

In this issue of the Kulanu, we want to highlight four of these dedicated volunteers so you can get to know who they are, in their own words, and what drives them to give back to our temple.

Rhonda Berns is always willing to jump in to help and offer support to those who need it. She spends time helping in the Sisterhood Gift Shop. She also has stepped up to help with Oneg Shabbat and does a wonderful job with keeping our temple beautiful with projects like the planters on the steps of the South entrance.

How long have you been a member of Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation? I have been a member since I can remember. My family lived at 70th and Meridian and we walked to temple for High Holidays. That's when the congregation parked on the street!

Why did you decide to be a part of the IHC community? Member of IHC since childhood...

Consecration in 10th Street temple and onward.

What motivates you to volunteer your time at IHC? I am truly enjoying my retirement and giving of my time came easily to temple. Gardening in the pots around the building, onegs, Sisterhood events and the Gift Shop to name a few.

What is a story or memory about IHC that you reflect fondly on, or like to share with others?

Harvey Gaddie was such a dedicated employee and I enjoyed being in his company. I had many delightful milestones when growing up and now more to come with my grandkids.

Andy Ball wears many hats at temple, sitting on the House and Finance committees and being part of Brotherhood. His expertise and knowledge was incredibly helpful in tackling necessary building repairs during the pandemic.

How long have you been a member of Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation?

30 years this summer Why did you decide to be a part of the IHC community? Well, that’s a funny story. When we moved here from Texas in late summer of 1992, we came from a Conservative Shul in Dallas. We thought our daughter, Michelle, would start Hebrew school a year later at a Reform congregation and thus give us time to get to know the city, people, etc. Then we found out that the BJE served all congregations… However, we have remained members because of the friends we have made and because of the Rosh Hashanah Retreat, which is like no other.

What motivates you to volunteer your time at IHC? I was raised by parents and grandparents who volunteered and instilled a sense of giving back to the community in me.

What is a story or memory about IHC that you reflect fondly on, or like to share with others?

All of the Rosh Hashanah Retreats over the years (20+); Brotherhood making latkes for religious school; and the time a former Brotherhood member brought pepperoni pizza when we were setting up the sukkah.

When I think of IHC, I think of... Lots of friends

When I think of IHC, I think of... I cherish going to Shabbos Services. It gives me time to reflect on the week and catch my breath!

Outside of IHC, what do you do? During the day, you can find me playing Maj, pickleball, kayaking, and volunteering at the Maurer (BJE) library, Congregation Beth Shalom Bingo and my newest fun thing...working for a well-known caterer as a server. What a blast! I would be remiss if not to mention my time spent with my Noblesville and Florida little ones!

Outside of IHC, what do you do?

For the past year, I have served on the Board of Directors of the Indy Fringe Theatre and volunteered with the organization for about 10 years. I have been a volunteer for about 20 years at the Indianapolis Art Center where I work with students in the sculpture studio while also working on my own metal sculptures. In addition, I volunteer at Newfields and the Eiteljorg Museums. Last July, I retired from AT&T and haven’t looked back!

is heavily involved in Sisterhood, currently serving as VP of Social Action. She leads several Tikkun Olam initiatives, most notably food drives and a school supply drive for students at Greenbriar Elementary. Over the years, she has also volunteered her time in the Sisterhood Gift Shop.

sits on several committees at temple including the House, Back to the Building, and Finance. Her involvement has been extensive over the years from being a part of Mitzvah Stitchers and serving on the temple's renovation committee.

How long have you been a member of Indianapolis Hebrew Congregation? I joined IHC in the mid 1970s.

Why did you decide to be a part of the IHC community? I had attended services with friends for years, even though I was raised at different local synagogues. After graduating from college and working for a few years, I made the decision to become part of the IHC community for many reasons, but most importantly because as a young person I was welcomed with open arms.

What motivates you to volunteer your time at IHC? Giving back has always been important to me. Volunteering to help children and their families with necessities that most of us take for granted is my passion. Our Sisterhood Social Action Committee has given me the opportunity to involve many others who share the same ideals.

What is a story or memory about IHC that you reflect fondly on, or like to share with others?

There are many memories happy and sad, but the best one is our wedding in 1988 officiated by Rabbi Jon Stein and Cantor Janice Roger.

When I think of IHC, I think of... family, friendship and Sisterhood.

Outside of IHC, what do you do? Now that I am retired, I find that I am busier than when I was working. I love baking and cooking, especially trying new recipes. Unfortunately, I collect cookbooks that now number in the hundreds!

Other pastimes include working jigsaw puzzles, reading, cross stitch, and my latest find, Boggle puzzles. In addition to the volunteering that I do through Sisterhood, I have formed a very diverse group of individuals who help support McKinney Vento children in Washington Township by providing school supplies, food, clothing, and holiday surprises. I love traveling with my husband including yearly road trips and cruising.

How long have you been a member of IHC? 55 years Why did you decide to join IHC? When we moved to Indy from Chicago in 1967, one of the first things we did was join IHC. We wanted to become a part of the Jewish community and found IHC the place to start on that path.

What motivates you to volunteer your time at IHC? The deep feeling I have for IHC. What is a story or memory about IHC that you reflect fondly on, or like to share with others?

My joyful experience as a member of the first adult b’nai mitzvah class.

When I think of IHC, I think of... my religious home.

Outside of IHC, what do you do?

Enjoying the company of my daughter and my friends, reading, knitting, travelling and volunteering keeps me quite busy.

Temple Library As always, the summer seems to have “flown by” and we are returning to our program year routines. The library is trying to consolidate some of our collection, and we need your help in doing so.

Please keep an eye out for IHC Temple Library books. We are talking about books with spine labels that may be covered with yellow or red protective labels (children or youth books) or plain white labels, some with a colored dot (books for adults or teens). If the numbers or writing on the labels haven’t faded, then they should be written in ink – not typed. There should be a book pocket in each book as well. If you have such a book, or books, at home, please return it/them as soon as possible. Best part - there is no fine!

Note that we, rarely, can add donated books to the collection. What we are looking for now are books already part of our collection.

Evelyn Pockrass, Librarian Upcoming Jewish Book Club Selections The Jewish Book Club is a great way for book lovers to enjoy getting to know each other through lively discussion about great books with Jewish and literary value. The book club has been meeting on Zoom at 12:00pm on the second Tuesday of each month. You can read full book descriptions for each title here.

Reading the name of a loved one on a yahrzeit is a way to honor them, their lives and their memory. Jewish tradition teaches that the memory of one who has lived righteously lives on for blessing. We hope the memories of your loved one will bring you consolation and lighten your grief on their yahrzeit.

When a yahrzeit is observed, there is a Jewish custom to give tzedakah. This can be a donation to your favorite charity. If IHC is the charity of your choice, there is a full list of our tzedakah funds at ihcindy.org/give
