4WD HINTS & TIPS

TIP 1: TRAINING FOR THE UNPREPARED - Off road driving is an activity that is inherently dangerous and you will need to take appropriate care and precautions. We recommend that anyone who is considering some serious off road travel that coud include recovery situations to undertake an appropriate, professionally run training course that are available nationwide. If that isn’t for you, talk with friends that are practiced at off road driving - a trip with someone that is experienced will teach you a lot.

TIP 2: DRIVING IN DRY SAND - Sand is not a fixed description by any means. There are differences with how you would approach a dry fine sandy track as opposed to a damp hard packed beach. The dryer and finer your sandy track, the more your vehicles mass will sink – that is your tyres will displace more sand and push further below the surface.

What does this effect cause?

Greater resistance and a reduced vehicle clearance.

How do I allow for this?

The correct tyre pressure is important. Use a gauge and set your tyres to 25 to 20 PSI uniformly if you are finding that you are getting bogged. But, otherwise approximately 3/4s to 2/3s of your road driving tyre pressure should be acceptable. This will increase the surface area of the tyres, and therefore spread the downward force of your vehicle over a greater area. This in turn increases the potential grip of your tyres whilst reducing the depth to which they will sink into the soft sand.

How to approach tough tracks

In terms of approaching a track that appears to be a challenge, what you want to avoid is losing momentum and wheel spin. So generally approach tough track areas in 2nd gear low range, and keep your revs in the 2,500 to 2,750 range. Second gear will generally allow for excellent application of power without creating too much wheel spin if you overexert.

What if I start to spin my wheels?

If you hit a point where you lose your momentum and may be becoming bogged, applying more forward power may simply make your problem worse, not better. In soft sand you often need to go backwards to go forward – try reversing out of your bog. Remember that wheel spinning is just digging the hole deeper.

And, if that doesn’t get you out – don’t be afraid to put your hand up early for being snatched out by a travelling companion or passing vehicle. The deeper the bog (often caused by continually trying in vain) the tougher the snatch will be on your vehicle and your friends.

TIP 3: MAKING SNATCHING OUT OF A RECOVERY SITUATION

EASIER ON YOUR VEHICLE - Using a snatch strap to recover vehicles can become quite run of the mill for any 4WDer. But, we need to remember that the act of snatching out a vehicle can be quite hard on the vehicle itself. There are a couple of things you can do:

Use an Equaliser Strap

An equaliser strap does a couple of things. Firstly, it reduces the chance of a shackle giving way during the recovery and becoming dangerous to bystanders. Secondly, it transmits the power of the snatch across the whole of the vehicles width, creating a better environment for that vehicle to be removed from the bog. Finally, it reduces the chance of repeated snatching creating uneven stress on vehicle frames.

Vary the snatching point

If possible you should have multiple recovery attachment points on the front and rear of your vehicle. Vary the point to which you attach for a snatch and this will reduce stresses created over time

TIP 4: LOADING YOUR VEHICLE - One of the critical mistakes a lot of us make is overloading our vehicle for a holiday and not considering the effects. 4WDers particularly can be a little lax when it comes to placing weight above the natural centre of our vehicles gravity. That is, overloading roof racks with at times hundreds of kilograms of gear. So here are some tips to consider:

Packing with weight in mind

Consider packing your lighter items into water and dustproof sacks and placing those onto the roof rack. Get the heavier items into the back of your vehicle. Also, once you are packed, have a serious look at suspension and tyres of your vehicle – if they are seriously compressed – you are overloaded.

Towing a trailer is a better option than overloading your vehicle

Talk to an experienced 4WDer and they will tell you an appropriately packed 4WD and box trailer will travel better than an overloaded 4WD. It seems like towing the trailer should be worse right?

Well the added set of tyres and axles by adding the trailer spreads the load, thus reducing the downward pressure on the soft ground overall and minimises the resistance the vehicle has to work through the move forward. Most simple semi-off-road trailers only weigh about 200kgs anyway.
