Description Trientine (TriLaWil), manufactured by Laurus Labs Ltd is a chelating agent. It is used for the treatment of Wilson’s disease (hepatolenticular degeneration) in patients intolerant to medicine called Penicillamine. The medication should be used when continued therapy with Penicillamine is no longer possible due to intolerable or life-endangering side effects.

Limitation(s) of use: Unlike penicillamine, Trientine (TriLaWil Capsule) is not recommended in cystinuria or rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Trientine is not indicated to treat biliary cirrhosis.

Dosage and Side Effects The recommended initial dosage of Trientine Capsule is 500 mg to 750 mg per day for pediatric patients and 750 mg to 1,250 mg per day for adults given in divided doses 2, 3, or 4 times daily. Dosage may be increased to a maximum of 2,000 mg per day for adults or 1,500 mg per day for pediatric patients aged 12 or less.

The daily dosage of Trientine (TriLaWil) needs to be enhanced only if the clinical response (CR) is not apt or the free serum copper concentration is constantly beyond 20 mcg/dL. The optimal long-term dosage (maintenance) needs to be specified at 6 to 12-month intervals Take Trientine on an empty stomach, at least 60 minutes before a meal or 120 minutes after a meal, and at least 60 minutes apart from any other medication, food, or milk. The capsules need to be swallowed whole with the help of water and must not be chewed or opened.

The most common side effects of trientine hydrochloride may include stomach pain, heartburn, loss of appetite, general ill feeling, black/tarry stools, mouth sores, cracking, skin flaking, or thickening.
