EXPLORE THE Y WHY THE Y The Y is an association of people who have committed to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all people, regardless of their ability to pay. We are a non-profit, charitable organization established to provide programs and services to youth, adults and families in order to strengthen the community. The YMCA is funded locally. Funds raised through contributions, endowments and membership fees are used to provide services in Will, Grundy and part of Kendall Counties.

Updating Your Contact Information We ask our members to notify us of any changes in their contact Information, including email, phone or residential address. To update your contact information, please call (815) SAY-YMCA, use the “contact us” link on our website or stop by the Membership Desk during your next visit.

Credits and Refunds Program fees are not refundable. Classes missed due to weather, holidays, illness, acts of God, or choice of participant cannot be made up, credited or refunded. If the YMCA cancels a class due to low enrollment, participants will be issued a credit for a future program. Members who withdraw from a program for medical reasons and present a physician’s order will receive a credit for the remaining classes. When a class needs to be cancelled by the Y, the class will be rescheduled.

All credits are good for one year from the date issued. Members who withdraw from a class for non-medical reasons may be subject to a processing fee.

Insurance The YMCA assumes no responsibility for personal injuries or loss/damage of personal property while individuals are using YMCA facilities. It is recommended that participants make provisions to provide this coverage through their family insurance program. Anyone engaging in new physical activity or who may have health-related issues should consult a physician prior to starting fitness routines.

Child Supervision Children under the age of ten must be supervised by an adult or family member at least sixteen years of age at all times when using YMCA facilities outside of a structured YMCA program. The Kids Corner Supervised Playroom is available during designated hours for Facility Members, ages six months through seven years old. The Activity

Center is available during designated hours for Facility Members, ages seven through seventeen.

The accompanying adult or family member must: · Directly supervise any child under the age of eight at all times. · Remain in the building in an accessible area for any child ages eight or nine. · Directly supervise any child under the age of ten when using the pools.

Child Abuse Prevention Policy The Greater Joliet Area YMCA is mandated by state law to report any suspected cases of child abuse or neglect to the appropriate authorities for investigation.

Holidays The YMCA prorates classes on days when the buildings are closed for the following holidays: Easter, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The Y closes at 1 p.m. on Memorial Day, Labor Day, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Cell Phone Use Policy The use of cameras, video recorders, cell phones and/or any photographic devices is NOT ALLOWED in YMCA locker rooms, changing areas or restrooms. We also ask members to refrain from making or answering phone calls while using the Wellness Center.

We also ask members to please refrain from taking photos during classes and demonstrate good judgement and assess the situation/ environment before taking photos at the YMCA. Please remember that it is important to obtain parental consent before taking photos/videos of minors. This is for the safety and privacy of all our members and participants.

No Smoking Policy In the interest of the health and safety of our staff and members, it is the policy of the Greater Joliet Area YMCA to forbid all forms of tobacco in any YMCA facilities or on the grounds of any YMCA property. YMCA grounds include: facilities, parking lots, sidewalks, fields, parks, and paths. Tobacco products prohibited include, but are not limited to, lit or unlit cigarettes (clove, bidis, kreteks), e-cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, pipes, hookah products; any smokeless, dissolvable, or inhaled tobacco products, including but not limited to dip, chew, snuff or snus; and all nicotine delivery devices that are not FDA approved as cessation products.

The Greater Joliet Area YMCA reserves the right to terminate facility privileges at any time for inappropriate behavior or conduct detrimental to its members or the organization.

Building & Room Schedules The Y schedules rooms in the building to allow for classes and open times. You can find room schedules in the facility or posted online by visiting www.jolietymca.org.

Members can also access, view and set reminders for our free fitness classes and community events by signing-up to receiving weekly emails through on our online fitness schedule. To subscribe, visit www.jolietymca.org.

Locker Rooms We encourage members to bring locks to secure their belongings while visiting the Y. Items may not be stored in lockers overnight. The Y does not provide towels. The Y is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Children up to the age of five may accompany a parent of the opposite sex into the locker room.

Private Locker Rooms Co-ed locker rooms are available for members with small children, members with special needs who require assistance, and those members who prefer more privacy.

Sauna & Steam Room The co-ed sauna and steam rooms are available for members ages 18 and over. Proper attire is required.

Wellness Center The Wellness Center is available for members ages 16 and over. We ask that members be courteous and put away equipment when finished using it and refrain from talking on their cell phones while in the Wellness Center. Teens (ages 13-15), who have completed the Wellness Center Certification Class, may utilize the cardio and strength machines. For safety reasons, only members ages 16 and over may use the free weights. Food is not allowed in the Wellness Center.

Gym Gym schedules are available at the branches and online at www.jolietymca.org. Times are subject to change due to programs, leagues or special events.

Open Gym: Members, ages eight and older, may participate in activities in the gym during designated times.

Adult Basketball: This time is set aside for adults ages 18 and over to play full court basketball.

The Greater Joliet Area YMCA accepts cash, check, MasterCard, Visa or Discover. In most cases, phone registration is accepted for current members when paying by a credit card or electronic funds transfer (EFT). Outstanding balances must be paid before a member will be allowed to register for future programs. Facility Members must maintain their memberships throughout the duration of a program in order to pay Facility Member pricing. System credits and promotional codes may be used online.

All classes have a maximum and minimum number of participants. When possible, classes will be added to accommodate wait lists and to expand those offerings that are in high demand. Classes below the minimum will be combined when possible, and as a last alternative, will be cancelled.

GALA

It was truly a night to remember as more than 330 area residents helped the Greater Joliet Area YMCA raise nearly $115,000 at its BE THE GOOD Gala on Saturday, October 12, at the Bolingbrook Golf Club.

Guests enjoyed an elegant evening that included dinner, live entertainment and opportunities to bid on an assortment of silent and live auction items.

Funds raised from the event will benefit the Y’s financial assistance program, helping to ensure that no one is turned away from the organization due to the inability to pay.

Since its inception, the Y’s signature fundraising event has raised more than $1 million to provide financial assistance for membership and programs that benefit families within our community.

Thank you to our generous sponsors who helped make this event possible and to the generous donors who were attendance that night.

This year’s Gala volunteer committee members included: Annie Gretencord, Karen Haas, MaryKay Hrdina, Mark Johnson, Maria Macris, Nick Macris, Alexa Midlock, Kristin Orban, Ryan Peterson, Karen Rouse and Barb Ziegner. Senior Development Director Julie Wilkinson and Annual Giving Manager Brittney Halliday provided staff leadership, with Volunteer and Development Operations Director Dori Fugate playing a key supporting role.

Volunteer Opportunities at the YMCA The generosity of others is at the core of the Y’s existence. It is only through the support of our hundreds of thousands of volunteers and public and private donors that we are able to give back to the communities we serve.

We welcome and appreciate youth in grades 9-12 and adults 18 years or older who would like to volunteer their time and expertise. A background check must be completed before volunteers are allowed to participate in any Y program or activity.

Volunteers will be working together to complete a variety of beautification projects in advance of the YMCA’s busy summer programming season.

Sunday Let your children crawl through our tunnels and relax in our story area while you take time for yourself to get fit. They’ll have a blast playing with other children their age and you can rest assured they are in good hands with our staff. Schedules and hours can and do change based on our members’ needs. Schedules are posted online and are available at the Y.

Kids Corner Guidelines (Kids Corner is available to Greater Joliet Area YMCA Facility Family Members

only.)

• YMCA staff members are not permitted to change diapers. If a child needs his/her diaper changed, parents will be paged over the intercom system. Parents must use their own diapers and supplies.

• Children must be fully covered on top and bottom at all times while in the Kids Corner play area. All walking children must wear shoes in Kids Corner; bare feet are not allowed.

• Children must be 3 years old or older and potty trained to play in the tunnels. Shoes may only be removed when children are playing in the play tunnels and children must wear socks while in the play tunnels.

• Kids Corner is open to children, ages 6 months to 7 years old. Children may stay in the Kids Corner supervised play area for up to 2 hours each day.

• For safety and security reasons, members must present their membership card when they are checking a child into Kids Corner.

Replacement cards may be purchased at the Membership Desk.

• Children are not allowed in Kids Corner unless they have been checked in by a parent or guardian.

• For the safety and security of all children in Kids Corner, parents will only be allowed past the Check-In Desk to change a diaper.

• Parents/guardians must remain on YMCA property while their children are in the Kids Corner Playroom.

• In the event that a child is displaying unsafe or inappropriate behavior, the Kids Corner staff will use a “time-out” for children two years of age and older, and activity redirection for children younger than two.

• In the event a child hits or bites another child while in Kids Corner, parents will be paged immediately over the intercom system. If this behavior is found to be a continuous problem, that child may be removed from Kids Corner for a period of time.

• If a child begins to cry and cannot be comforted within 10 minutes while they are in Kids Corner, parents will be paged over the intercom system.

• The YMCA staff reserve the right to terminate or suspend Kids Corner privileges for any child who exhibits unsafe or inappropriate behavior.

• We ask that children do not bring toys or electronic devices from home to Kids Corner.

Sick Children • For the safety and well-being of all members and staff, we ask that members do not bring sick children to the Kids Corner. If a child is not feeling well, becomes sick while in Kids Corner, or is showing signs or symptoms of being sick, parents will be paged over the intercom system.

The YMCA staff reserve the right to determine whether a child is sufficiently sick to be excluded or removed from the Kids Corner.

Food And Drink • Children may bring a labeled sippy cup, with water only, to drink while in Kids Corner.

• YMCA staff members are not permitted to feed children while they are in Kids Corner.

Activity Center Usage

Behavior

• Seven-year-old children must be signed in and out of the Activity Center by a parent or guardian who remains on YMCA property. Sevenyear-old children will not be allowed to leave the Activity Center unattended.

• Children, ages 8 and up, must sign in with the Activity Center attendant. Children, ages 8 and up, do not need to be signed in and out by a parent or guardian.

• During unsupervised hours, families are welcome to use the Activity Center. During this time, children, age 17 and under, will need to be supervised by an adult over the age of 18.

• Teens must abide by the YMCA Character Values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility when visiting the Activity Center.

• All members are responsible for keeping track of their personal items while using the Activity Center. The YMCA is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

• The YMCA reserves the right to suspend Activity Center privileges and limit usage of equipment to members who do not abide by YMCA policies and guidelines.

Computers And Equipment • Teens must sign in when using YMCA computers in the Activity Center. There is a 30 minute limit on all computers when others are waiting.

• Food and drinks are not allowed by the computers or other gaming equipment in the Activity Center.

• All members must sign in to use equipment such as tablets, games and computers in the Activity Center.

• Websites or games depicting violence or inappropriate content will not be allowed to be viewed or played on YMCA computers and tablets.

• Only YMCA staff members are allowed to change games on the gaming consoles or download new games onto YMCA tablets.

FA CPR w/ Water Park Option

Become certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding. Students will learn professional responsibilities, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED and Lifeguarding.

Participants are required to complete a pre-requisite swim test in order to participate in the lifeguard class. Prerequisites may be completed prior to registration for free. Participants who register without taking the pre-test in advance will be charged a 50% deposit if unable to pass the swim test on the first day of class. The pre-requisite swim test includes the following skills: • Must be able to complete a continuous 300-yard swim • Must be able to tread water for two minutes without hands • Must complete a timed swim to retrieve a ten-pound object from under 7-10 feet of water.

Valid email is required to participate. This is a blended learning course that uses a combination of in-person and online training. Online coursework can take up to 7 hours to complete, and will be emailed out within 3 business days of registration.

To schedule a swim test with the Aquatics Director, please call 815-782-0514. Cancellations within two weeks of class start date will receive a 50% refund. Attendance at every class is mandatory. No refunds will be issued for students who do not successfully complete the class. Class must have a minimum of three participants to run.

Optional training/testing for Waterpark Lifeguard certification is available for an additional fee.

JUNIOR LIFEGUARD PROGRAM BECOME A JUNIOR LIFEGUARD AND AQUATIC AIDE

Ages 10-14

The Y’s Aquatics Leadership Program allows tweens and teens (ages 10-14) to step inside the world of lifeguarding and learn lifesaving skills (including first aid and CPR), experience real-life scenarios, participate in team-building exercises and assist in teaching swim lessons.

TWO LEVELS AVAILABLE INTRO CLASS

First time participants should register for the “Intro” program. To enroll in this class, participants must take a swim test and complete a one-page essay prior to the first day of class. For more information and to set up the swim test, please contact the Aquatics Director at your branch.

Once participants successfully complete all training requirements, they will receive a Jr. Lifeguard T-shirt and whistle.

VARSITY CLASS

Returning participants (ages 12-14) should register for the “Varsity” program. At this level, participants will be asked to volunteer 20 hours throughout the session as a junior lifeguard and/or swim aide. Varsity participants will receive a Junior Lifeguard T-shirt and whistle that should be worn to all volunteer shifts.

SWIMMING FURTHER FASTER Joliet YMCA JETS Swim Team One of the area’s most historic youth swimming clubs, the Joliet Y JETS Swim Team is a year-round developmental competitive swimming program that offers instruction and training for swimmers, ages five and up. Swimmers of all ages will learn the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship and setting and achieving goals while developing their competitive swimming skills. The JETS Swim Team supports the YMCA’s mission of building strong kids, strong families and strong communities, and our professional team of coaches strive to not only build strong swimmers but caring, honest, respectful and responsible children and young adults.

Anyone between the ages of 5 and 18 can join the JETS Swim Team. To make the beginning level of the team, swimmers must be able to swim one length (25 yards) of the pool comfortably and confidently without a flotation device. All JETS Swim Team participants must have a YMCA Facility Membership.

A member of both YMCA and USA Swimming, the JETS participate in a variety of meets throughout the year, although competition is not mandatory.

The team practices up to six days a week at four locations throughout Will and Grundy Counties.

Swimmers are encouraged to attend practices and work hard, but there are not mandatory practice attendance requirements.

How can I learn more about the JETS?

JETS SPRING SWIM CLINIC This is great opportunity to learn more about the JETS and to meet our team and coaching staff.

Throughout the week, coaches will be evaluating swimmers for team placement. A YMCA membership is not required to participate in the clinic.

GOGGLE UP In Y classes, not only are you taught how to swim in a caring way, but you also learn about yourself, about safety and rescue skills and about water activities you can enjoy for a lifetime.

THERE’S AN AQUATICS PROGRAM FOR EVERYONE. GENERAL POOL RULES OPEN SWIM: All members may participate in activities in the pool during open swim. All children (under 15) will be swim tested. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult on the pool deck. Children who do not pass the Yellow or Blue swim test must also be accompanied by an adult in the water.

LAP SWIM: There is always one lane available for lap swimming for members. Children, who pass the blue test, are permitted in the lap lanes and must be swimming laps. Swimmers in the lap lanes must swim continuous laps without stopping so as to not interfere with others sharing the lap lane.

POOL POLICIES SWIM TEST POLICY Children under 15 years of age will be swim tested by the guard on duty and will be required to wear the appropriate wristband for the duration of their visit. Testing MUST be done with every visit.

BLUE & YELLOW SWIMMERS under 10 years of age MUST have at least one supervising parent in the pool area at all times at a ratio of one adult to every three children.

RED SWIMMERS MUST have at least one parent IN THE WATER at all times at a ratio of one adult to every three children. Red swimmers shorter than 4 feet, 6 inches must wear a Coast Guard Approved flotation device, and must be supervised by a parent in the water at a ratio of one adult to every two children.

BLUE WRISTBAND TEST Blue swimmers must be able to jump in the deep end, tread water for 10 seconds and swim to the shallow end of the pool using a rudimentary front crawl stroke without stopping or having assistance. Blue wristband swimmers are permitted to swim in the shallow and deep ends of the pool.

YELLOW WRISTBAND TEST Yellow swimmers will be asked to jump into the pool at the guard chair and swim to the shallow end of the pool using a horizontal swim stroke without stopping or having assistance. Yellow wristband swimmers are not permitted past the 5 foot marker. The Yellow Test must be done without a life jacket.

RED WRISTBAND TEST All swimmers under 15 years of age who do not pass Blue or Yellow Swim Tests will be issued a Red wristband. Red swimmers MUST wear a life jacket at all times if they are shorter than 4 feet, 6 inches tall. Red swimmers are not permitted past the 4 foot marker.

PLEASE NOTE: Lifeguards may not always be able to give swim tests during busier times.

LIGHTNING AND THUNDER POLICY The pool and pool deck will be closed and cleared of all members in the event of lightning or thunder, and shall remain closed until 30 minutes after the last sighting.

YMCA Swim Lesson Policies and Procedures 1. The first day of each session is reserved for swim testing and evaluations. All appropriate changes will be made to ensure quality instruction for your child. If you have a question about your child’s swim stage after the first day of class, please speak to your child’s instructor.

2. Children will be moved up to the next stage once all of the skills in the previous level have been mastered.

Many skills in certain levels are dependent on physical development, strength and coordination. Please remember that each child is unique and develops at his or her own rate, and that progression through these stages varies greatly.

3. The Aquatics Department reserves the right to cancel and/or combine classes due to low enrollment.

Make-up Lessons and Swim Credit 1. One make up class may be accommodated per session if schedules allow. Either 24 hours notice, or a doctor’s note, must be provided in order to schedule a make up. Make up lessons will take place in other classes running with open slots during the same 5-week session, and may not always be available. In stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action.

In stage 6, students refine stroke technique on all major competitive strokes, learn about competitive swimming, and discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle.

Once in the program, your child will automatically be registered for the next session. If they move up a class level, we will transfer them to the correct class for you! Your timeslot will never change until your child is ready to transfer from Stage 5 to Stage 6, at which time they may need to move up or back by 30 minutes depending on when the class is offered. Payments will be drafted on the fourth Monday of each session for 5-week classes, or on each Thursday for 1-week classes.

Swimming is not only life skill that everyone should learn, but it’s a great way to exercise and improve your health. This basic swim course will help new swimmers feel comfortable in and moving through the water, with a focus on water safety.

MOVING FOR BETTER BALANCE Moving For Better Balance is a 10-week evidence-based group exercise program developed by researchers at the Oregon Research Institute. The program, based on the principles of Tai Ji Quan, is led by a qualified instructor. Students will learn eight Tai Ji Quan forms modified especially for falls prevention.

The program works to improve balance, muscle strength, flexibility and mobility, to enhance overall physical health, which leads to better functioning in daily activities. ADVANCE AND ENHANCE YOUR LIFE TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR DIABETES Diabetes Self Management Program Designed for people with diabetes, pre-diabetes and caregivers, this FREE 7-week program will provide you with valuable information and tools for self-managing your diabetes. You will learn how: • Healthy eating can improve your condition • To create an exercise program that works for you • To improve communication with your family, friends, and healthcare providers • To develop weekly goals to help manage your condition • To develop problem-solving strategies to help cope with pain, fatigue and frustration • To gain support and encouragement from others living with ongoing health conditions.

Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program With the support of a trained Healthy Heart Ambassador, participants in this four-month program will learn how to lower their blood pressure by developing healthier eating habits, and gain a better understanding of blood pressure management.

Program participants will be required to: • Measure and record their blood pressure at home at least two times per month • Attend two personalized consultations per month with a Healthy Heart Ambassador • Attend monthly nutrition education seminars To participate in the program, participants must: • Be diagnosed with high blood pressure • Not have experienced a recent cardiac event • Not have atrial fibrillation or other arrhythmias FREE & • Not be at risk for lymphedema o p en to the Ages 18 and Up c o m munity January 6-May 2 Blood pressure monitor included for those in need.

FitStart

Ages 16 and Up January 9-March 19 Thursdays • 7-9 p.m. • $180/$260 Are you looking to make changes to your eating and activity habits? Are you ready to lose weight, gain muscle and feel great? If so, this 10-week challenge is for you. This workshop will help you make lifestyle changes that will improve the quality of your life. In addition to weekly workout and nutrition education with a personal trainer, participants will receive workout plans, mid-week check-ins and weekly weigh-ins. All participants will be pre and post tested (test include girth measurements, body fat percentage). Week 1 is an intake week that will include initial fitness testing.

FitStart is a program designed

for the new exerciser or those who have trouble sticking to a workout program. Throughout the 12-week program, participants will meet with a Fit Coach up to four times. During these meetings, your workouts will be evaluated and, as your fitness level increases, so will your workout intensity. The first session will consist of cardio. Your second and third sessions will introduce you to strength training equipment and the fourth session will review and make sure you are comfortable with your new fitness plan. FitStart is not personal training, but your coach will help you determine and meet your goals.
