to participate in YMCA programs, regardless of their ability to pay. Through programming at our four YMCA branches and at locations throughout our community, the Y served more than 9,100 people in 2018 who would not have otherwise had the opportunity to participate in membership and programs.

As a result, children built friendships at summer camp and through our before and after school programs, seniors experienced community, teens set goals for their future while receiving college readiness and career training, and families grew stronger by spending quality time together.

To make all of this possible, the YMCA proudly invested $1.5 million into our members, our community and our future, through scholarship assistance and free community programming.

EXPLORE THE Y WHY THE Y The Y is an association of people who have committed to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all people, regardless of their ability to pay. We are a non-profit, charitable organization established to provide programs and services to youth, adults and families in order to strengthen the community. The YMCA is funded locally. Funds raised through contributions, endowments and membership fees are used to provide services in Will, Grundy and part of Kendall Counties.

Updating Your Contact Information We ask our members to notify us of any changes in their contact Information, including email, phone or residential address. To update your contact information, please call (815) SAY-YMCA, use the “contact us” link on our website or stop by the Membership Desk during your next visit.

Credits and Refunds Program fees are not refundable. Classes missed due to weather, holidays, illness, acts of God, or choice of participant cannot be made up, credited or refunded. If the YMCA cancels a class due to low enrollment, participants will be issued a credit for a future program. Members who withdraw from a program for medical reasons and present a physician’s order will receive a credit for the remaining classes. When a class needs to be cancelled by the Y, the class will be rescheduled.

All credits are good for one year from the date issued. Members who withdraw from a class for non-medical reasons may be subject to a processing fee.

Insurance The YMCA assumes no responsibility for personal injuries or loss/damage of personal property while individuals are using YMCA facilities. It is recommended that participants make provisions to provide this coverage through their family insurance program. Anyone engaging in new physical activity or who may have health-related issues should consult a physician prior to starting fitness routines.

Child Supervision Children under the age of ten must be supervised by an adult or family member at least sixteen years of age at all times when using YMCA facilities. The Kids Corner Supervised Playroom is available during designated hours for Facility Members, ages six months through seven years old.

The accompanying adult or family member must: · Directly supervise any child under the age of eight at all times. · Remain in the building in an accessible area for any child ages eight to ten. · Directly supervise any child under the age of ten when using the pool.

Child Abuse Prevention Policy The Greater Joliet Area YMCA is mandated by state law to report any suspected cases of child abuse or neglect to the appropriate authorities for investigation.

Holidays The YMCA prorates classes on days when the buildings are closed for the following holidays: Easter, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The Y closes at 1 p.m. on Memorial Day, Labor Day, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Cell Phone Use Policy The use of cameras, video recorders, cell phones and/or any photographic devices is NOT ALLOWED in YMCA locker rooms, changing areas or restrooms. We also ask members to refrain from making or answering phone calls while using the Wellness Center.

We also ask members to please refrain from taking photos during classes and demonstrate good judgement and assess the situation/ environment before taking photos at the YMCA. Please remember that it is important to obtain parental consent before taking photos/videos of minors. This is for the safety and privacy of all our members and participants.

No Smoking Policy In the interest of the health and safety of our staff and members, it is the policy of the Greater Joliet Area YMCA to forbid all forms of tobacco in any YMCA facilities or on the grounds of any YMCA property. YMCA grounds include: facilities, parking lots, sidewalks, fields, parks, and paths. Tobacco products prohibited include, but are not limited to, lit or unlit cigarettes (clove, bidis, kreteks), e-cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, pipes, hookah products; any smokeless, dissolvable, or inhaled tobacco products, including but not limited to dip, chew, snuff or snus; and all nicotine delivery devices that are not FDA approved as cessation products.

The Greater Joliet Area YMCA reserves the right to terminate facility privileges at any time for

inappropriate behavior or conduct detrimental to its members or the organization.

Building & Room Schedules The Y schedules rooms in the building to allow for classes and open times. You can find room schedules in the facility or posted online by visiting www.jolietymca.org.

Members can also access, view and set reminders for our free fitness classes and community events by signing-up to receiving weekly emails through on our online fitness schedule. To subscribe, visit www.jolietymca.org.

Locker Rooms We encourage members to bring locks to secure their belongings while visiting the Y. Items may not be stored in lockers overnight. The Y does not provide towels. The Y is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Children up to the age of five may accompany a parent of the opposite sex into the locker room.

Private Locker Rooms Coed family locker rooms or unisex restrooms are available for members with children and members with special needs who require assistance or a private changing space.

Sauna & Steam Room Co-ed locker rooms are available for members with small children, members with special needs who require assistance, and those members who prefer more privacy.

Wellness Center The Wellness Center is available for members ages 16 and over. We ask that members be courteous and put away equipment when finished using it and refrain from talking on their cell phones while in the Wellness Center. Teens (ages 13-15), who have completed the Wellness Center Certification Class, may utilize the cardio and strength machines. For safety reasons, only members ages 16 and over may use the free weights. Food is not allowed in the Wellness Center.

Gym Gym schedules are available at the branches and online at www.jolietymca.org. Times are subject to change due to classes, leagues or special events.

Open Gym: Members, ages eight and older, may participate in activities in the gym during designated times.

Adult Basketball: This time is set aside for adults ages 18 and over to play full court basketball.

The Greater Joliet Area YMCA accepts cash, check, MasterCard, Visa or Discover. In most cases, phone registration is accepted for current members when paying by a credit card or electronic funds transfer (EFT). Outstanding balances must be paid before a member will be allowed to register for future programs. System credits and promotional codes may be used online.

All classes have a maximum and minimum number of participants. When possible, classes will be added to accommodate wait lists and to expand those offerings that are in high demand. Classes below the minimum will be combined when possible, and as a last alternative, will be cancelled.

Y facilities, including gyms, pools and outdoor recreation areas, are available to rent for special events and overnight lock-ins for schools, churches, scouts and other non-profit organizations.

Lock-ins and Overnight Rentals Lock-ins are available on Friday nights and Saturdays depending on location. Doors will be locked at 10 p.m. and pick-up times vary by branch. Overnight rentals include the first two hours of open pool time. A maximum of 75 participants will be allowed in the pool.

Before and After School Youth Enrichment Program As part of its Kid Zone program, the Galowich and Smith Family YMCAs provide recreational before and after school activities for students at schools in the Joliet, Troy, Rockdale, Elwood, Laraway, Union and Minooka school districts. Children do arts and crafts, play games, develop friendships and learn lessons that will last a lifetime. Participants must be five years old before they attend Kid Zone or K-Kidz.

Days Out Of School On select days out of school, children in grades K-8 are invited to spend the day with friends and Kid Zone staff at the Galowich and Smith Family YMCAs. All participants should dress for the weather, bring a sack lunch, a drink, snacks, a swimsuit and a towel. Please note: Refunds will not be given to those who are unable to attend. The registration deadline is 48 hours prior to the day off school.

Financial assistance is available for those who do not qualify for DHS funds.

Programming runs from August to May. A $45 non-refundable registration fee (per family)*, the first of 10 installment payments and YMCA membership fee (if applicable) is due upon registering. The remaining nine payments are paid via automatic withdrawal from a checking account. Debit and credit cards also accepted.

Participants may start attending four business days after the day registration is completed.

New Evening Program

One of the Y’s most beloved programs, Teen Achievers provides area high school students with the guidance and support they need to discover their identities, embrace their passions, and become their best selves. Building upon the successes of the Y’s school-based Teen Achievers programs, Teen Achievers Assembly (TA2) will provide area high schools students with an alternate evening program at the Galowich Family YMCA. Students will learn to manage their stress, time, and emotions, and learn about the importance of making confident and wise decisions during their high school years. With the support of the Y’s TA2 team, students will learn about life after high school and receive the encouragement to, not just complete 12th grade, but to be truly prepared for whatever comes next.

SKILLS FOR LIFE American Red Cross Lifeguarding Courses Become certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding. Students will learn professional responsibilities, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED and Lifeguarding.

Pre-requisites It is recommended that participants are able to complete the following pre-requisites prior to registering for the class: • Must be able to complete a continuous 300-yard swim • Must be able to tread water for two minutes without hands • Must complete a timed swim to retrieve a ten-pound object from under ten feet of water To schedule a swim test with the Aquatics Director, please call your local branch.

Refunds will not be given for students who do not successfully complete the class. Class must have a minimum of three participants in order to run. Additional certificates/trainings will be available at the end of each class: Anaphylaxis & Epinephrine Auto Injector, Blood Borne Pathogens, and Administering Emergency Oxygen. Attendance at every class is mandatory.

Valid email is required to participate. This is a blended learning course that uses a combination of in-person and online training. Online coursework can take up to 7 hours to complete, and will be emailed out within 3 business days of registration.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding Review Course

CPR/FA/AED/ Certification Class This class is an American Red Cross certification class for Adult and Pediatric CPR, AED, and First Aid. Youth Basketball League

ACHIEVE MORE TOGETHER AS A TEAM

The Y Youth Sports program maximizes the positive effects of playing sports by emphasizing healthy competition and promoting teamwork. The Y focuses on the life lessons that can be learned from sports, and coaches strive to instill a positive self-image in each player. Most importantly, in the YMCA league, everyone plays and everyone wins!

DIVISIONS

When kids play sports, they get more than just exercise. Besides being physically healthier, they have higher self-esteem and a healthier body image. Kids who play sports perform better in school, develop better interpersonal skills, and work better in groups.

Jr. YBL (Ages 4-Kindergarten) Grades 1-2 and 3-4 Grades 5-6 Games will be played Saturday mornings at the Galowich Family YMCA, Smith Family YMCA or a local school in the school districts we serve.

Grades 7-8 and 9-12 Games will be played on Tuesdays evenings at a Plainfield school or Saturday mornings at the Galowich Family YMCA, Smith Family YMCA or another location to be announced.

This division will play against teams from across our association throughout the season.

Teams in grades 5-12 will play in a tournament at the end of the season against teams from across our YMCA association.

Game times/days are subject to change due to gym availability.

SWIMMING FURTHER FASTER Joliet YMCA JETS Swim Team One of the area’s most historic youth swimming clubs, the Joliet Y JETS Swim Team is a year-round developmental competitive swimming program that offers instruction and training for swimmers, ages five and up. Swimmers of all ages will learn the importance of teamwork, sportsmanship and setting and achieving goals while developing their competitive swimming skills. The JETS Swim Team supports the YMCA’s mission of building strong kids, strong families and strong communities, and our professional team of coaches strive to not only build strong swimmers but caring, honest, respectful and responsible children and young adults.

Anyone between the ages of 5 and 18 can join the JETS Swim Team. To make the beginning level of the team, swimmers must be able to swim one length (25 yards) of the pool comfortably and confidently without a flotation device. All JETS Swim Team participants must have a YMCA Facility Membership.

A member of both YMCA and USA Swimming, the JETS participate in a variety of meets throughout the year, although competition is not mandatory.

The team practices up to six days a week at four locations throughout Will and Grundy Counties.

Swimmers are encouraged to attend practices and work hard, but there are not mandatory practice attendance requirements.

GOGGLE UP In Y classes, not only are you taught how to swim in a caring way, but you also learn about yourself, about safety and rescue skills and about water activities you can enjoy for a lifetime.

THERE’S AN AQUATICS PROGRAM FOR EVERYONE. GENERAL POOL RULES OPEN SWIM: All members may participate in activities in the pool during open swim. All children (under 15) will be swim tested. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult on the pool deck. Children who do not pass the Yellow or Blue swim test must also be accompanied by an adult in the water.

LAP SWIM: There is always one lane available for lap swimming for members. Children, who pass the blue test, are permitted in the lap lanes and must be swimming laps. Swimmers in the lap lanes must swim continuous laps without stopping so as to not interfere with others sharing the lap lane.

POOL POLICIES SWIM TEST POLICY Children under 15 years of age will be swim tested by the guard on duty and will be required to wear the appropriate wristband for the duration of their visit. Testing MUST be done with every visit.

BLUE & YELLOW SWIMMERS under 10 years of age MUST have at least one supervising parent in the pool area at all times at a ratio of one adult to every three children.

RED SWIMMERS MUST have at least one parent IN THE WATER at all times at a ratio of one adult to every three children. Red swimmers shorter than 4 feet, 6 inches must wear a Coast Guard Approved flotation device, and must be supervised by a parent in the water at a ratio of one adult to every two children.

BLUE WRISTBAND TEST Blue swimmers must be able to jump in the deep end, tread water for 10 seconds and swim to the shallow end of the pool using a rudimentary front crawl stroke without stopping or having assistance. Blue wristband swimmers are permitted to swim in the shallow and deep ends of the pool.

YELLOW WRISTBAND TEST Yellow swimmers will be asked to jump into the pool at the guard chair and swim to the shallow end of the pool using a horizontal swim stroke without stopping or having assistance. Yellow wristband swimmers are not permitted past the 5 foot marker. The Yellow Test must be done without a life jacket.

RED WRISTBAND TEST All swimmers under 15 years of age who do not pass Blue or Yellow Swim Tests will be issued a Red wristband. Red swimmers MUST wear a life jacket at all times if they are shorter than 4 feet, 6 inches tall. Red swimmers are not permitted past the 4 foot marker.

PLEASE NOTE: Lifeguards may not always be able to give swim tests during busier times.

LIGHTNING AND THUNDER POLICY The pool and pool deck will be closed and cleared of all members in the event of lightning or thunder, and shall remain closed until 30 minutes after the last sighting.

YMCA Swim Lesson Policies and Procedures 1. The first day of each session is reserved for swim testing and evaluations. All appropriate changes will be made to ensure quality instruction for your child. If you have a question about your child’s swim stage after the first day of class, please speak to your child’s instructor.

2. Children will be moved up to the next stage once all of the skills in the previous level have been mastered.

Many skills in certain levels are dependent on physical development, strength and coordination. Please remember that each child is unique and develops at his or her own rate, and that progression through these stages varies greatly.

3. The Aquatics Department reserves the right to cancel and/or combine classes due to low enrollment.

Make-up Lessons and Swim Credit 1. One make up class may be accommodated per session if schedules allow. Either 24 hours notice, or a doctor’s note, must be provided in order to schedule a make up. Make up lessons will take place in other classes running with open slots during the same 5-week session, and may not always be available. Credits or refunds will not be given in place of make up lessons.

2. In the event of a pool closure due to weather, sanitary closure, or acts of God, a water safety lesson will be taught outside the pool. Credits, refunds or make ups are not offered in place of safety classes.

3. Participants that withdraw from a swim class for medical reasons will receive a YMCA credit for the remaining classes if the request is accompanied by a doctor’s note.

All credits are valid for one year.

4. All program fees are non-refundable.

Has your child ever wondered what it’s like to be a lifeguard or swim instructor?

Would your child be interested in learning lifesaving skills, including CPR and First Aid? Would they enjoy helping teach younger kids how to swim? If yes, your child may enjoy our Aquatic Leadership track.

In this Aquatic Sports & Games track, your child will learn basic water polo skills, such as shooting, passing and goalkeeping in a fun team environment. They will learn how to paddle and steer a canoe, as well as about boating and waterfront safety.

Other water sports and games included will vary, possibly including an in-water version of quidditch!

REDEFINE YOUR HEALTH • TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE Diabetes Prevention Program The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps adults at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes reduce their risk for developing the disease by taking steps that will improve their overall health and well-being. Featuring a CDC-approved curriculum, this yearlong program includes 16 weekly sessions, plus additional bi-weekly and monthly sessions, in a classroom-based setting. Our goal is to help you reduce your body weight by seven percent and increase your activity level to 150 minutes per week.

Adults with a BMI of 25 or above, who are at risk or have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, are eligible to participate.

Diabetes Self Management Program Designed for people with diabetics, pre-diabetics and caregivers, this FREE 7-week program will provide you with valuable information and tools for self-managing your diabetes. You will learn how: • Healthy eating can improve your condition • To create an exercise program that works for you • To improve communication with your family, friends, and healthcare providers • To develop weekly goals to help manage your condition • To develop problem-solving strategies to help cope with pain, fatigue and frustration • To gain support and encouragementfrom others living with ongoing health conditions.

Blood Pressure Self-Monitoring Program With the support of a trained Healthy Heart Ambassador, participants in this four-month program will learn how to lower their blood pressure by developing healthier eating habits, and gain a better understanding of blood pressure management.

FITNESS CONSULTATIONS

Climbing Iconic Buildings of the World Join the YMCA for this unique fitness challenge, designed for members of all fitness levels. This 8-week program will challenge you to climb the tallest and most recognized buildings in the world as a way to embrace a healthy lifestyle.

Participants will log stairs climbed with a tracking card and earn prizes along the way. At the end of the 8-week challenge, prizes will be awarded to the top three finishers with the most floors climbed.

IGNITE YOUR PASSION Volunteer Opportunities at the YMCA The generosity of others is at the core of the Y’s existence. It is only through the support of our hundreds of thousands of volunteers and public and private donors that we are able to give back to the communities we serve.
