EXPLORE THE Y WHY THE Y The Y is an association of people who have committed to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all people, regardless of their ability to pay. We are a non-profit, charitable organization established to provide programs and services to youth, adults and families in order to strengthen the community. The YMCA is funded locally. Funds raised through contributions, endowments and membership fees are used to provide services in Will, Grundy and part of Kendall Counties.

Updating Your Contact Information We ask our members to notify us of any changes in their contact Information, including email, phone or residential address. To update your contact information, please call (815) SAY-YMCA, use the “contact us” link on our website or stop by the Membership Desk during your next visit.

Credits and Refunds Program fees are not refundable. Classes missed due to weather, holidays, illness, acts of God, or choice of participant cannot be made up, credited or refunded. If the YMCA cancels a class due to low enrollment, participants will be issued a credit for a future program. Members who withdraw from a program for medical reasons and present a physician’s order will receive a credit for the remaining classes. When a class needs to be cancelled by the Y, the class will be rescheduled.

All credits are good for one year from the date issued. Members who withdraw from a class for non-medical reasons may be subject to a processing fee.

Insurance The YMCA assumes no responsibility for personal injuries or loss/damage of personal property while individuals are using YMCA facilities. It is recommended that participants make provisions to provide this coverage through their family insurance program. Anyone engaging in new physical activity or who may have health-related issues should consult a physician prior to starting fitness routines.

Child Supervision Children under the age of eight must be supervised by an adult at all times when using YMCA facilities.

Children under the age of ten must be supervised by an adult when using the pools. The Kids Corner supervised playroom is available during designated hours for Facility Members, ages six months to seven years old.

Child Abuse Prevention Policy The Greater Joliet Area YMCA is mandated by state law to report any suspected cases of child abuse or neglect to the appropriate authorities for investigation.

Holidays The YMCA prorates classes on days when the buildings are closed for the following holidays: Easter, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The Y closes at 1 p.m. on Memorial Day, Labor Day, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Cell Phone Use Policy The use of cameras, video recorders, cell phones and/or any photographic devices is NOT ALLOWED in YMCA locker rooms, changing areas or restrooms. We also ask members to refrain from making or answering phone calls while using the Wellness Center. This is for the safety and privacy of all our members and participants.

No Smoking Policy In the interest of the health and safety of our staff and members, it is the policy of the Greater Joliet Area YMCA to forbid all forms of tobacco in any YMCA facilities or on the grounds of any YMCA property. YMCA grounds include: facilities, parking lots, sidewalks, fields, parks, and paths. Tobacco products prohibited include, but are not limited to, lit or unlit cigarettes (clove, bidis, kreteks), e-cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, pipes, hookah products; any smokeless, dissolvable, or inhaled tobacco products, including but not limited to dip, chew, snuff or snus; and all nicotine delivery devices that are not FDA approved as cessation products.

The Greater Joliet Area YMCA reserves the right to terminate facility privileges at any time for inappropriate behavior or conduct detrimental to its members or the organization.

Building & Room Schedules The Y schedules rooms in the building to allow for classes and open times. You can find room schedules in the facility or posted online by visiting www.jolietymca.org.

Members can also access, view and set reminders for our free fitness classes and community events by signing-up to receiving weekly emails through on our online fitness schedule. To subscribe, visit www.jolietymca.org.

Locker Rooms We encourage members to bring locks to secure their belongings while visiting the Y. Items may not be stored in lockers overnight. The Y does not provide towels. The Y is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Children up to the age of five may accompany a parent of the opposite sex into the locker room.

Private Locker Rooms Co-ed family locker rooms are available for members with children and members with special needs who require assistance.

Sauna & Steam Room Co-ed locker rooms are available for members with small children, members with special needs who require assistance, and those members who prefer more privacy.

Wellness Center The Wellness Center is available for members ages 16 and over. We ask that members be courteous and put away equipment when finished using it and refrain from talking on their cell phones while in the Wellness Center. Teens (ages 13-15), who have completed the Wellness Center Certification Class, may utilize the cardio and strength machines. For safety reasons, only members ages 16 and over may use the free weights. Food is not allowed in the Wellness Center.

Gym Gym schedules are available at the branches and online at www.jolietymca.org. Times are subject to change due to classes, leagues or special events.

Open Gym: Members, ages eight and older, may participate in activities in the gym during designated times.

Adult Basketball: This time is set aside for adults ages 18 and over to play full court basketball.

The Greater Joliet Area YMCA accepts cash, check, MasterCard, Visa or Discover. In most cases, phone registration is accepted for current members when paying by a credit card or electronic funds transfer (EFT). Outstanding balances must be paid before a member will be allowed to register for future programs. System credits and promotional codes may be used online.

All classes have a maximum and minimum number of participants. When possible, classes will be added to accommodate wait lists and to expand those offerings that are in high demand. Classes below the minimum will be combined when possible, and as a last alternative, will be cancelled.

• All groups must provide adult chaperones for their events.

• Reservations must be finalized four weeks in advance to ensure adequate staffing.

• Facilities are available by appointment only.

Lock-ins are available on Friday nights and Saturdays depending on location. Doors will be locked at 10 p.m. and pick-up times vary by branch. Overnight rentals include the first two hours of open pool time.

A maximum of 75 participants will be allowed in the pool.

FACILITY RENTALS AT THE YMCA Y facilities, including gyms, pools and outdoor recreation areas, are available to rent for special events and overnight lock-ins for schools, churches and scouts.

Outdoor Movie Night • Halloween Edition

PARENTS’ NIGHT OUT Parents’ Night Out (PNO) is held on the first Friday of each month to give parents some much-needed time to themselves while their kids have fun at the Y. Under the supervision of YMCA staff, kids get to play games, eat pizza and swim in the pool.

Pre-registration is required. All participants must be potty trained.

KID ZONE

Before and After School Youth Enrichment Program As part of its Kid Zone program, the Galowich and Smith Family YMCAs provide recreational before and after school activities for students at schools in the Joliet, Troy, Rockdale, Elwood, Laraway and Minooka school districts. Children do arts and crafts, play games, develop friendships and learn lessons that will last a lifetime. Participants must be 5 years old by September 1.

DHS funds are accepted. Financial assistance is available for those who do not qualify for DHS funds.

Programming runs from August to May. A $45 non-refundable registration fee (per family)*, the first of 10 installment payments and YMCA membership fee (if applicable) is due upon registering. The remaining nine payments are paid via automatic withdrawal from a checking account. Debit and credit cards also accepted. Participants may start attending four business days after the day registration is completed.

KID ZONE

Days Out Of School On select days out of school, children in grades K-8 are invited to spend the day with friends and Kid Zone staff at the Galowich and Smith Family YMCAs. All participants should dress for the weather, bring a sack lunch, a drink, snacks, a swimsuit and a towel. Please note: Refunds will not be given to those who are unable to attend. The registration deadline is 48 hours prior to the day off school.

Kindergarten Before and After School Recreational Program The Galowich and Smith Family YMCA’s K-Kids program is designed for children attending morning and afternoon Kindergarten. We provide a fun and unique program where children will do activities that emphasize fine motor skills through arts & crafts and gross motor skills through gym games. Participants must be 5 years old by September 1.

SKILLS FOR LIFE American Red Cross Lifeguarding Become certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding. Students will learn professional responsibilities, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED and Lifeguarding.

Pre-requisites It is required for participants to be able to complete the following prerequisites: • Must be able to complete a continuous 300-yard swim • Must be able to tread water for two minutes without hands • Must complete a timed swim to retrieve a ten-pound object from under ten feet of water To schedule a pre-test, contact an Aquatics Director: Galowich (815) 744-3939, ext. 320 (815) 726-3939, ext. 417 Smith The pre-test can be taken for free before registering for the class.

Participants who register without taking the pre-test in advance will be charged a $50 deposit if unable to pass the pre-test on the first day of class.

This is your opportunity to spend time with our coaches to learn new drills, improve your swimming skills and meet members of the JETS family.

The Y Youth Sports program maximizes the positive effects of playing sports by emphasizing healthy competition and promoting teamwork. The Y focuses on the life lessons that can be learned from sports, and coaches strive to instill a positive self-image in each player. Most importantly, in the YMCA league, everyone plays and everyone wins!

DIVISIONS

When kids play sports, they get more than just exercise. Besides being physically healthier, they have higher self-esteem and a healthier body image. Kids who play sports perform better in school, develop better interpersonal skills, and work better in groups.

Jr. YBL (Ages 4-Kindergarten) Games will be played Saturday mornings at the Galowich Family YMCA, Smith Family YMCA or Heritage Trail Elementary School.

Grades 1-2 and 3-4 Games will be played Saturday mornings at the Galowich Family YMCA, Smith Family YMCA, Heritage Trail or Troy Crossroads Elementary School.

Grades 5-6 Games will be played Saturday mornings at the Galowich Family YMCA, Smith Family YMCA or Troy Crossroads Elementary School.

This fun and fast-moving class teaches preschool-aged children the basics of soccer: base dribbling, passing, ball handling, kicking and trapping.

The Y’s karate program is taught by the internationally certified instructors.

Students are trained in basic and advanced karate skills, including mental and physical fitness, Kata (forms), punching, kicking, stances, blocking, Kumite (sparring) and self defense against multiple attackers.

STRONG SWIMMERS

CONFIDENT KIDS In Y classes, not only are you taught how to swim in a caring way, but you also learn about yourself, about safety and rescue skills and about water activities you can enjoy for a lifetime.

THERE’S AN AQUATICS PROGRAM FOR EVERYONE. GENERAL POOL RULES OPEN SWIM: All members may participate in activities in the pool during open swim. All children (under 15) will be swim tested. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult on the pool deck. Children who do not pass the Yellow or Blue swim test must also be accompanied by an adult in the water.

LAP SWIM: There is always one lane available for lap swimming for members. Children, who pass the blue test, are permitted in the lap lanes and must be swimming laps. Swimmers in the lap lanes must swim continuous laps without stopping so as to not interfere with others sharing the lap lane.

POOL POLICIES SWIM TEST POLICY Children under 15 years of age will be swim tested by the guard on duty and will be required to wear the appropriate wristband for the duration of their visit. Testing MUST be done with every visit.

BLUE & YELLOW SWIMMERS under 10 years of age MUST have at least one supervising parent in the pool area at all times at a ratio of one adult to every three children.

RED SWIMMERS MUST have at least one parent IN THE WATER at all times at a ratio of one adult to every three children. Red swimmers shorter than 4 feet, 6 inches must wear a Coast Guard Approved flotation device, and must be supervised by a parent in the water at a ratio of one adult to every two children.

BLUE WRISTBAND TEST Blue swimmers must be able to jump in the deep end, tread water for 10 seconds and swim to the shallow end of the pool using a rudimentary front crawl stroke without stopping or having assistance. Blue wristband swimmers are permitted to swim in the shallow and deep ends of the pool.

YELLOW WRISTBAND TEST Yellow swimmers will be asked to jump into the pool at the guard chair and swim to the shallow end of the pool using a horizontal swim stroke without stopping or having assistance. Yellow wristband swimmers are not permitted past the 5 foot marker. The Yellow Test must be done without a life jacket.

RED WRISTBAND TEST All swimmers under 15 years of age who do not pass Blue or Yellow Swim Tests will be issued a Red wristband. Red swimmers MUST wear a life jacket at all times if they are shorter than 4 feet, 6 inches tall. Red swimmers are not permitted past the 4 foot marker.

PLEASE NOTE: Lifeguards may not always be able to give swim tests during busier times.

LIGHTNING AND THUNDER POLICY The pool and pool deck will be closed and cleared of all members in the event of lightning or thunder, and shall remain closed until 30 minutes after the last sighting.

YMCA Swim Lesson Policies and Procedures 1. The first day of each session is reserved for swim testing and evaluations. All appropriate changes will be made to ensure quality instruction for your child. If you have a question about your child’s swim stage after the first day of class, please speak to your child’s instructor.

2. Children will be moved up to the next stage once all of the skills in the previous level have been mastered.

Many skills in certain levels are dependent on physical development, strength and coordination. Please remember that each child is unique and develops at his or her own rate, and that progression through these stages varies greatly.

3. The Aquatics Department reserves the right to cancel and/or combine classes due to low enrollment.

Make-up Lessons and Swim Credit 1. One make up class may be accommodated per session if schedules allow. Either 24 hours notice, or a doctor’s note, must be provided in order to schedule a make up. Make up lessons will take place in other classes running with open slots during the same 5-week session, and may not always be available. Credits or refunds will not be given in place of make up lessons.

2. In the event of a pool closure due to weather, sanitary closure, or acts of God, a water safety lesson will be taught outside the pool. Credits, refunds or make ups are not offered in place of safety classes.

3. Participants that withdraw from a swim class for medical reasons will receive a YMCA credit for the remaining classes if the request is accompanied by a doctor’s note.

All credits are valid for one year.

4. All program fees are non-refundable.

In stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action.

Has your child ever wondered what it’s like to be a lifeguard or swim instructor?

Would your child be interested in learning lifesaving skills, including CPR and First Aid? Would they enjoy helping teach younger kids how to swim? If yes, your child may enjoy our Aquatic Leadership track.

In this Aquatic Sports & Games track, your child will learn basic water polo skills, such as shooting, passing and goalkeeping in a fun team environment. They will learn how to paddle and steer a canoe, as well as about boating and waterfront safety.

Other water sports and games included will vary, possibly including an in-water version of quidditch!

AQUATIC LEADERSHIP PROGRAM BECOME A JUNIOR LIFEGUARD AND AQUATIC AIDE The Y’s Aquatics Leadership Program allows tweens and teens (ages 10-14) to step inside the world of lifeguarding and learn lifesaving skills (including first aid and CPR), experience real-life scenarios, participate in team-building exercises and assist in teaching swim lessons.

TWO LEVELS AVAILABLE INTRO CLASS

First time participants should register for the “Intro” program.

To enroll in this class, participants must take a swim test and complete a one-page essay prior to the first day of class. For more information and to set up the swim test, please contact the Aquatics Director at your branch.

Intro participants will receive a Junior Lifeguard t-shirt and whistle after completing training halfway through the session.

VARSITY CLASS

Returning participants (ages 12-14) should register for the “Varsity” program. At this level, participants will be asked to volunteer 20 hours

throughout the session as a junior lifeguard and/or swim aide.

Varsity participants will receive a Junior Lifeguard t-shirt and whistle that should be worn to all volunteer shifts.

REDEFINE YOUR HEALTH TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE Diabetes Prevention Program The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps adults at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes reduce their risk for developing the disease by taking steps that will improve their overall health and well-being.

Featuring a CDC-approved curriculum, this yearlong program includes 16 weekly sessions, plus additional bi-weekly and monthly sessions, in a classroom-based setting. Our goal is to help you reduce your body weight by seven percent and increase your activity level to 150 minutes per week.

Adults with a BMI of 25 or above, who are at risk or have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, are eligible to participate.

Holiday Weight Maintenance Challenge November 12 - January 5 • $25 Ages 16 and Up Our eight-week Holiday Weight Maintenance Challenge will help you get in shape and keep the weight off this holiday season. We have a great plan to help you adopt healthy eating and exercise habits while saying ‘No’ to those tempting holiday cravings. Are you up for the challenge?

If you can maintain your weight within 2 pounds for 8 weeks, you will receive your money back in the form of a YMCA voucher that can be used towards any fitness program, including personal training. If you gain more than 2 pounds during this eight-week challenge, your $25 fee will be donated in your name to the Y’s Annual Giving Campaign.
