EXPLORE THE Y WHY THE Y The Y is an association of people who have committed to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all people, regardless of their ability to pay. We are a non-profit, charitable organization established to provide programs and services to youth, adults and families in order to strengthen the community. The YMCA is funded locally. Funds raised through contributions, endowments and membership fees are used to provide services in Will, Grundy and part of Kendall Counties.

Updating Your Contact Information We ask our members to notify us of any changes in their contact Information, including email, phone or residential address. To update your contact information, please call (815) SAY-YMCA, use the “contact us” link on our website or stop by the Membership Desk during your next visit.

Credits and Refunds Program fees are not refundable. Classes missed due to weather, holidays, illness, acts of God, or choice of participant cannot be made up, credited or refunded. If the YMCA cancels a class due to low enrollment, participants will be issued a credit for a future program. Members who withdraw from a program for medical reasons and present a physician’s order will receive a credit for the remaining classes. When a class needs to be cancelled by the Y, the class will be rescheduled.

All credits are good for one year from the date issued. Members who withdraw from a class for non-medical reasons may be subject to a processing fee.

Insurance The YMCA assumes no responsibility for personal injuries or loss/damage of personal property while individuals are using YMCA facilities. It is recommended that participants make provisions to provide this coverage through their family insurance program. Anyone engaging in new physical activity or who may have health-related issues should consult a physician prior to starting fitness routines.

Child Supervision Children under the age of eight must be supervised by an adult at all times when using YMCA facilities.

Children under the age of ten must be supervised by an adult when using the pools. The Kids Corner supervised playroom is available during designated hours for Facility Members, ages six months to seven years old.

Child Abuse Prevention Policy The Greater Joliet Area YMCA is mandated by state law to report any suspected cases of child abuse or neglect to the appropriate authorities for investigation.

Holidays The YMCA prorates classes on days when the buildings are closed for the following holidays: Easter, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The Y closes at 1 p.m. on Memorial Day, Labor Day, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Cell Phone Use Policy The use of cameras, video recorders, cell phones and/or any photographic devices is NOT ALLOWED in YMCA locker rooms, changing areas or restrooms. We also ask members to refrain from making or answering phone calls while using the Wellness Center. This is for the safety and privacy of all our members and participants.

No Smoking Policy In the interest of the health and safety of our staff and members, it is the policy of the Greater Joliet Area YMCA to forbid all forms of tobacco in any YMCA facilities or on the grounds of any YMCA property. YMCA grounds include: facilities, parking lots, sidewalks, fields, parks, and paths. Tobacco products prohibited include, but are not limited to, lit or unlit cigarettes (clove, bidis, kreteks), e-cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, pipes, hookah products; any smokeless, dissolvable, or inhaled tobacco products, including but not limited to dip, chew, snuff or snus; and all nicotine delivery devices that are not FDA approved as cessation products.

The Greater Joliet Area YMCA reserves the right to terminate facility privileges at any time for inappropriate behavior or conduct detrimental to its members or the organization.

Building & Room Schedules The Y schedules rooms in the building to allow for classes and open times. You can find room schedules in the facility or posted online by visiting www.jolietymca.org.

Members can also access, view and set reminders for our free fitness classes and community events by signing-up to receiving weekly emails through on our online fitness schedule. To subscribe, visit www.jolietymca.org.

Locker Rooms We encourage members to bring locks to secure their belongings while visiting the Y. Items may not be stored in lockers overnight. The Y does not provide towels. The Y is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Children up to the age of five may accompany a parent of the opposite sex into the locker room.

Private Locker Rooms Co-ed locker rooms are available for members with small children, members with special needs who require assistance, and those members who prefer more privacy.

Sauna & Steam Room The co-ed sauna and steam rooms are available for members ages 18 and over. Proper attire is required.

Wellness Center The Wellness Center is available for members ages 16 and over. We ask that members be courteous and put away equipment when finished using it and refrain from talking on their cell phones while in the Wellness Center. Teens (ages 13-15), who have completed the Wellness Center Certification Class, may utilize the cardio and strength machines. For safety reasons, only members ages 16 and over may use the free weights. Food is not allowed in the Wellness Center.

Gym Gym schedules are available at the branches and online at www.jolietymca.org. Times are subject to change due to classes, leagues or special events.

Open Gym: Members, ages eight and older, may participate in activities in the gym during designated times.

Adult Basketball: This time is set aside for adults ages 18 and over to play full court basketball.

The Greater Joliet Area YMCA accepts cash, check, MasterCard, Visa or Discover. In most cases, phone registration is accepted for current members when paying by a credit card or electronic funds transfer (EFT). Outstanding balances must be paid before a member will be allowed to register for future programs. System credits and promotional codes may be used online.

All classes have a maximum and minimum number of participants. When possible, classes will be added to accommodate wait lists and to expand those offerings that are in high demand. Classes below the minimum will be combined when possible, and as a last alternative, will be cancelled.

Sunday Let your children crawl through our tunnels and relax in our story area while you take time for yourself to get fit. They’ll have a blast playing with other children their age and you can rest assured they are in good hands with our staff. Schedules and hours can and do change based on our members’ needs. Schedules are posted online and are available at the Y.

Kids Corner Guidelines

(Kids Corner is available to Avery Facility Family Members only.)

Security

Behavior

• Kids Corner is open to children, ages 6 months to 7 years old. Children may stay in the Kids Corner supervised play area for up to 2 hours each day.

• For safety and security reasons, members must present their membership card when they are checking a child into Kids Corner.

Replacement cards may be purchased at the Membership Desk.

• Children are not allowed in Kids Corner unless they have been checked in by a parent or guardian.

• For the safety and security of all children in Kids Corner, parents will only be allowed past the Check-In Desk to change a diaper.

• Parents/guardians must remain on YMCA property while their children are in the Kids Corner Playroom.

• In the event that a child is displaying unsafe or inappropriate behavior, the Kids Corner staff will use a “time-out” for children two years of age and older, and activity redirection for children younger than two.

• In the event a child hits or bites another child while in Kids Corner, parents will be paged immediately over the intercom system. If this behavior is found to be a continuous problem, that child may be removed from Kids Corner for a period of time.

• If a child begins to cry and cannot be comforted within 10 minutes while they are in Kids Corner, parents will be paged over the intercom system.

• The YMCA staff reserve the right to terminate or suspend Kids Corner privileges for any child who exhibits unsafe or inappropriate behavior.

• YMCA staff members are not permitted to change diapers. If a child needs his/her diaper changed, parents will be paged over the intercom system. Parents must use their own diapers and supplies.

• Children must be fully covered on top and bottom at all times while in the Kids Corner play area. All walking children must wear shoes in Kids Corner; bare feet are not allowed.

• Children must be 3 years old or older and potty trained to play in the tunnels. Shoes may only be removed when children are playing in the play tunnels and children must wear socks while in the play tunnels.

Toys And Electronic Devices • We ask that children do not bring toys or electronic devices from home to Kids Corner.

Sick Children • For the safety and well-being of all members and staff, we ask that members do not bring sick children to the Kids Corner. If a child is not feeling well, becomes sick while in Kids Corner, or is showing signs or symptoms of being sick, parents will be paged over the intercom system.

The YMCA staff reserve the right to determine whether a child is sufficiently sick to be excluded or removed from the Kids Corner.

Food And Drink • Children may bring a labeled sippy cup, with water only, to drink while in Kids Corner.

• YMCA staff members are not permitted to feed children while they are in Kids Corner.

SUPERVISED ACTIVITY CENTER (Ages 7-17 years) Monday-Friday 3-8:30 p.m. | Saturday-Sunday 8:15 a.m.-2 p.m.

Activity Center Guidelines (The Activity Center is designed for children ages 7 and older and is available to Avery Facility Members only.)

Activity Center Usage

Behavior

• Seven-year-old children must be signed in and out of the Activity Center by a parent or guardian who remains on YMCA property. Sevenyear-old children will not be allowed to leave the Activity Center unattended.

• Children, ages 8 and up, must sign in with the Activity Center attendant. Children, ages 8 and up, do not need to be signed in and out by a parent or guardian.

• During unsupervised hours, families are welcome to use the Activity Center. During this time, children, age 17 and under, will need to be supervised by an adult over the age of 18.

• Teens must abide by the YMCA Character Values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility when visiting the Activity Center.

• All members are responsible for keeping track of their personal items while using the Activity Center. The YMCA is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

• The YMCA reserves the right to suspend Activity Center privileges and limit usage of equipment to members who do not abide by YMCA policies and guidelines.

Computers And Equipment • Teens must sign in when using YMCA computers in the Activity Center. There is a 30 minute limit on all computers when others are waiting.

• Food and drinks are not allowed by the computers or other gaming equipment in the Activity Center.

• All members must sign in to use equipment such as tablets, games and computers in the Activity Center.

• Websites or games depicting violence or inappropriate content will not be allowed to be viewed or played on YMCA computers and tablets.

• Only YMCA staff members are allowed to change games on the gaming consoles or download new games onto YMCA tablets.

Kids, do you need a break from your parents? No problem! Bring your friends and have a blast at the Y with our cool counselors on Friday nights!

Join us for a variety of activities such as games, sports, movies and arts and crafts. Pre-registration is required at least 48 hours in advance.

Kids Night Out is open to Community Members, so bring a friend!

Family nights are held once a month and offer a great opportunity for families to come out to the Y and spend some time with each other, while also getting to know other Y families!

DHS funds are accepted. Financial assistance is available for those who do not qualify for DHS funds. Programming runs from August to May. A $45 non-refundable registration fee (per family)*, the first of 10 installment payments and YMCA membership fee (if applicable) is due upon registering. The remaining nine payments are paid via automatic withdrawal from a checking account. Debit and credit cards also accepted. Participants may start attending four business days after the day registration is completed.

Child Care BRIGHT NEW BEGINNINGS Pint Size Pupils is designed to help your young learner develop to their fullest potential. Through a variety of fun activities that include both structured and open play, our dedicated staff members teach, model and reinforce the Y’s Christian character values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

Preschool & Kindergarten Enrichment Program This program is designed for preschool and kindergartenaged children, ages 3-6. The focus will be on developing socialization skills, as well as introducing colors, shapes, letters and numbers. Children will participate in learning activities, craft projects, music, gym play and more.

KID ZONE

Days Out Of School On select days out of school, children in grades K-8 are invited to spend the day with friends and Kid Zone staff at the C.W. Avery Family YMCA. All participants should dress for the weather, bring a sack lunch, a drink, snacks, a swimsuit and a towel. Please note: Refunds will not be given to those who are unable to attend. The registration deadline is 48 hours prior to the day off school.

Become certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding.

Students will learn professional responsibilities, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED and Lifeguarding.

Pre-requisites It is required for participants to be able to complete the following pre-requisites: • Must be able to complete a continuous 300-yard swim • Must be able to tread water for two minutes without hands • Must complete a timed swim to retrieve a ten-pound object from under ten feet of water To schedule a pre-test with the Aquatics Director, please call (815) 782-0514. The pre-test can be taken for free before registering for the class. Participants who register without taking the pre-test in advance will be charged a $50 deposit if unable to pass the pre-test on the first day of class.

This is a blended learning course that uses a combination of in-person and online training. Optional training/testing for Waterpark Lifeguard certification is available for an additional fee. Refunds will not be given for students who do not successfully complete the class. Class must have a minimum of three participants in order to run. Upon successful competition, certificates will be emailed.

Youth Basketball League

ACHIEVE MORE TOGETHER AS A TEAM When kids play sports, they get more than just exercise. Besides being physically healthier, they have higher self-esteem and a healthier body image. Kids who play sports perform better in school, develop better interpersonal skills, and work better in groups.

The Y Youth Sports program maximizes the positive effects of playing sports by emphasizing healthy competition and promoting teamwork. The Y focuses on the life lessons that can be learned from sports, and coaches strive to instill a positive self-image in each player. Most importantly, in the YMCA league, everyone plays and everyone wins!

Divisions Jr. YBL (Ages 4-Kindergarten) Games are played on Saturdays at the C.W. Avery Family YMCA. Grades 1-2 Games are planned to be played on Friday evenings at a Plainfield school.

Grades 3-4 Games are planned to be played on Thursday evenings at a Plainfield school.

Grades 5-6 Games are planned to be played on Friday evenings at a Plainfield school.

Grades 7-8 and 9-12 Games are planned to be played on Tuesday evenings at a Plainfield school or Saturday mornings at the Galowich Family YMCA, Smith Family YMCA or at our Troy location. This division will play against teams from across our association throughout the season.

Teams in grades 5-12 will play in a tournament at the end of the season against teams from across our YMCA association.

Ages 6-7 Participants will swim 25 yards in the lap pool, ride their bike one mile and run or walk a half mile.

Participants are required to bring their own bicycle and helmet. Race/road bikes will not be allowed on the kids course. Please use a mountain bike. The bike and run are held on a closed course around Ira Jones Middle School.

The event will begin shortly after the Mini Tri (ages 12 and up) is underway. The estimated start time is 8:45 a.m.

Floor Hockey is a great introduction into the world of hockey! In this class, we will focus on the importance of passing, stick handling and shooting.

THRIVE Dance Team Auditions • August 24-25 THRIVE is an award-winning community dance team based at the C.W. Avery Family YMCA. As a part of THRIVE, dancers of all ages get the opportunity to: • Learn and develop skills across various dance styles, including ballet, jazz, tap and contemporary, among others.

• Receive guidance from dance instructors who embrace the YMCA core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility.

• Perform at local events, community expos and the THRIVE Showcase.

New dancers may audition for one of the four performance dance level groups: Bronze, Silver, Gold and Platinum. Experienced dancers are invited to audition for THRIVE’s award-winning competitive dance levels: Elite and Diamond Elite.

Friday, August 24 5:30-7 p.m.

Experienced dancers who would like to audition for competition levels are required to attend. Solo choreography will be the focus. Dancers will need to present a 60-second solo in a dance style of their preference.

Saturday, August 25 11 a.m.-1 p.m.

Dancers of all ages and skill levels are invited to attend. Dancers will learn a short choreographed piece and present what they learned in a group setting. All participants make the team and will be placed in levels based on their ability. Competition level dancers will present more advanced choreography.

Audition Packets Audition packets will be available at the Y on Friday, August 24 between 5 and 7 p.m. Packets must be completed prior to auditioning on Saturday, August 25.

Intro to Hip-Hop Dance

Ballet Level 2 Technique

Using popular music as a soundtrack, participants will learn basic hip-hop and jazz dance movements and techniques.

Ages 6-9 Mondays 4:45-5:30 p.m.

This class is a continuation of Ballet: Level 1 Technique, but it includes more advanced barre work, center and combinations. Dancers will work on body placement and arm positions.

Ballet Level 1 Technique Ballet is the base for almost all other styles as it allows dancers to develop strength, flexibility, poise, grace and confidence. This class will introduce dancers to the basic fundamentals of ballet including movements with feet turned out, body mechanics, stretching and more complex combinations.

Students will also do center floor work as well as basic barre work. Some ballet experience is helpful.

Ballet Level 3 Technique A continuation of Levels 1 and 2, this class features more advanced technique. Students will learn more refined barre and floor work, more complex choreography and more challenging techniques. Instructor approval is required to register for this class.

STRONG SWIMMERS

CONFIDENT KIDS In Y classes, not only are you taught how to swim in a caring way, but you also learn about yourself, about safety and rescue skills and about water activities you can enjoy for a lifetime.

THERE’S AN AQUATICS PROGRAM FOR EVERYONE. GENERAL POOL RULES OPEN SWIM: All members may participate in activities in the pool during open swim. All children (under 15) will be swim tested. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult on the pool deck. Children who do not pass the Yellow or Blue swim test must also be accompanied by an adult in the water.

LAP SWIM: There is always one lane available for lap swimming for members. Children, who pass the blue test, are permitted in the lap lanes and must be swimming laps. Swimmers in the lap lanes must swim continuous laps without stopping so as to not interfere with others sharing the lap lane.

POOL POLICIES SWIM TEST POLICY Children under 15 years of age will be swim tested by the guard on duty and will be required to wear the appropriate wristband for the duration of their visit. Testing MUST be done with every visit.

BLUE & YELLOW SWIMMERS under 10 years of age MUST have at least one supervising parent in the pool area at all times at a ratio of one adult to every three children.

RED SWIMMERS MUST have at least one parent IN THE WATER at all times at a ratio of one adult to every three children. Red swimmers shorter than 4 feet, 6 inches must wear a Coast Guard Approved flotation device, and must be supervised by a parent in the water at a ratio of one adult to every two children.

BLUE WRISTBAND TEST Blue swimmers must be able to jump in the deep end, tread water for 10 seconds and swim to the shallow end of the pool using a rudimentary front crawl stroke without stopping or having assistance. Blue wristband swimmers are permitted to swim in the shallow and deep ends of the pool.

YELLOW WRISTBAND TEST Yellow swimmers will be asked to jump into the pool at the guard chair and swim to the shallow end of the pool using a horizontal swim stroke without stopping or having assistance. Yellow wristband swimmers are not permitted past the 5 foot marker. The Yellow Test must be done without a life jacket.

RED WRISTBAND TEST All swimmers under 15 years of age who do not pass Blue or Yellow Swim Tests will be issued a Red wristband. Red swimmers MUST wear a life jacket at all times if they are shorter than 4 feet, 6 inches tall. Red swimmers are not permitted past the 4 foot marker.

PLEASE NOTE: Lifeguards may not always be able to give swim tests during busier times.

LIGHTNING AND THUNDER POLICY The pool and pool deck will be closed and cleared of all members in the event of lightning or thunder, and shall remain closed until 30 minutes after the last sighting.

YMCA Swim Lesson Policies and Procedures 1. The first day of each session is reserved for swim testing and evaluations. All appropriate changes will be made to ensure quality instruction for your child. If you have a question about your child’s swim stage after the first day of class, please speak to your child’s instructor.

2. Children will be moved up to the next stage once all of the skills in the previous level have been mastered.

Many skills in certain levels are dependent on physical development, strength and coordination. Please remember that each child is unique and develops at his or her own rate, and that progression through these stages varies greatly.

3. The Aquatics Department reserves the right to cancel and/or combine classes due to low enrollment.

Make-up Lessons and Swim Credit 1. One make up class may be accommodated per session if schedules allow. Either 24 hours notice, or a doctor’s note, must be provided in order to schedule a make up. Make up lessons will take place in other classes running with open slots during the same 5-week session, and may not always be available. Credits or refunds will not be given in place of make up lessons.

2. In the event of a pool closure due to weather, sanitary closure, or acts of God, a water safety lesson will be taught outside the pool. Credits, refunds or make ups are not offered in place of safety classes.

3. Participants that withdraw from a swim class for medical reasons will receive a YMCA credit for the remaining classes if the request is accompanied by a doctor’s note.

All credits are valid for one year.

4. All program fees are non-refundable.

Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidencebuilding experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision.

Parents accompany children in stage A, which introduces infants and toddlers to the aquatic environment through exploration and encourages them to enjoy themselves while learning about the water.

In stage B, parents work with their children to explore body positions, floating, blowing bubbles, and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.

Students learn personal water safety and achieve basic swimming competency by learning two benchmark skills:

Students develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water in stage 1. This stage lays the foundation that allows for a student’s future progress in swimming.

In stage 2, students focus on body position and control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water.

In stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action.

Students in stage 4 develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn the breaststroke kick and butterfly kick.

Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke.

In stage 6, students refine stroke technique on all major competitive strokes, learn about competitive swimming, and discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle.

Has your child ever wondered what it’s like to be a lifeguard or swim instructor?

Would your child be interested in learning lifesaving skills, including CPR and First Aid? Would they enjoy helping teach younger kids how to swim? If yes, your child may enjoy our Aquatic Leadership track.

In this Aquatic Sports & Games track, your child will learn basic water polo skills, such as shooting, passing and goalkeeping in a fun team environment. They will learn how to paddle and steer a canoe, as well as about boating and waterfront safety.

Other water sports and games included will vary, possibly including an in-water version of quidditch!

Is your child aged 12-14? Can your child retrieve a 10 pound object from the bottom of the deep end? Can your child also tread water for two minutes without using their hands?

AQUATIC LEADERSHIP PROGRAM BECOME A JUNIOR LIFEGUARD AND AQUATIC AIDE The Y’s Aquatics Leadership Program allows tweens and teens (ages 10-14) to step inside the world of lifeguarding and learn lifesaving skills (including first aid and CPR), experience real-life scenarios, participate in team-building exercises and assist in teaching swim lessons.

TWO LEVELS AVAILABLE INTRO CLASS First time participants should register for the “Intro” program. To enroll in this class, participants must take a swim test and complete a one-page essay prior to the first day of class. For more information and to set up the swim test, please contact Aquatics Manager Dan Chambers.

Intro participants will receive a Junior Lifeguard t-shirt and whistle after completing training halfway through the session.

VARSITY CLASS Returning participants (ages 12-14) should register for the “Varsity” program. At this level, participants will be asked to volunteer 20 hours throughout the session as a junior lifeguard and/or swim aide.

Varsity participants will receive a Junior Lifeguard t-shirt and whistle that should be worn to all volunteer shifts.

Swimmers do not need to be YMCA Facility Members to participate in the clinic. At the completion of the clinic, swimmers who wish to join the team will be given a group placement along with registration materials.

Swimmers must be able to complete 25 yards (one length of the YMCA pool) comfortably and confidently without a flotation device. If you are unable to make the clinic, an evaluation can be scheduled at any point of the year, and mid-season registration is possible if approved by the head coach.

FitStart is a program designed for the new exerciser or those who have trouble sticking to a workout program.

Throughout the 12-week program, participants will meet with a Fit Coach up to four times. During these meetings, your workouts will be evaluated and, as your fitness level increases, so will your workout intensity. The first session will consist of cardio. Your second and third sessions will introduce you to strength training equipment and the fourth session will review and make sure you are comfortable with your new fitness plan. FitStart is not personal training, but your coach will help you determine and meet your goals.

STAYING ACTIVE FOR LIFE

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps adults at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes reduce their risk for developing the disease by taking steps that will improve their overall health and well-being.

Featuring a CDC-approved curriculum, this yearlong program includes 16 weekly sessions, plus additional bi-weekly and monthly sessions, in a classroom-based setting. Our goal is to help you reduce your body weight by seven percent and increase your activity level to 150 minutes per week.

Adults with a BMI of 25 or above, who are at risk or have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, are eligible to participate.

Designed for adults of all fitness levels, this program aims to improve endurance, strength, balance and flexibility. Of all Enhance®Fitness’ multiple benefits though, the one that matters most is that it’s a great time.
