EXPLORE THE Y Why the Y The Y is an association of people who have committed to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all people, regardless of their ability to pay. We are a non-profit, charitable organi ation established to provide programs and services to youth, adults and families in order to strengthen the community. The YMCA is funded locally. Funds raised through contributions, endowments and membership fees are used to provide services in Will, Grundy and part of Kendall Counties.

Updating Your Contact Information We ask our members to notify us of any changes in their contact Information, including email, phone or residential address. To update your contact information, please call (815) SAY-YMCA, use the “contact us” link on our website or stop by the Membership Desk during your next visit.

Credits and Refunds Program fees are not refundable. Classes missed due to weather, holidays, illness, acts of God, or choice of participant cannot be made up, credited or refunded. If the YMCA cancels a class due to low enrollment, participants will be issued a credit for a future program. Members who withdraw from a program for medical reasons and present a physician’s order will receive a credit for the remaining classes. When a class needs to be cancelled by the Y, the class will be rescheduled.

All credits are good for one year from the date issued. Members who withdraw from a class for non-medical reasons may be subject to a processing fee.

Insurance The YMCA assumes no responsibility for personal injuries or loss/damage of personal property while individuals are using YMCA facilities. It is recommended that participants make provisions to provide this coverage through their family insurance program. Anyone engaging in a new physical activity or who may have health-related issues should consult a physician prior to starting fitness routines.

Child Supervision Children under the age of eight must be supervised by an adult at all times when using YMCA facilities.

Children under the age of ten must be supervised by an adult when using the pool. The Supervised Playroom is available during designated hours for Facility Members, ages six months to eight years old.

Child Abuse Prevention Policy The Greater Joliet Area YMCA is mandated by state law to report any suspected cases of child abuse or neglect to the appropriate authorities for investigation.

Holidays The YMCA prorates classes on days when the buildings are closed for the following holidays: Easter, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The Y closes at 1 p.m. on Memorial Day, Labor Day, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. Cell Phone Use Policy The use of cameras, video recorders, cell phones and/or any photographic devices is NOT ALLOWED in YMCA locker rooms, changing areas or restrooms. We also ask members to refrain from making or answering phone calls while using the Wellness Center. This is for the safety and privacy of all our members and participants.

No Smoking Policy In the interest of the health and safety of our staff and members, it is the policy of the Greater Joliet Area YMCA to forbid all forms of tobacco in any YMCA facilities or on the grounds of any YMCA property. YMCA grounds include: facilities, parking lots, sidewalks, fields, parks, and paths. Tobacco products prohibited include, but are not limited to, lit or unlit cigarettes (clove, bidis, kreteks), e-cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, pipes, hookah products; any smokeless, dissolvable, or inhaled tobacco products, including but not limited to dip, chew, snuff or snus; and all nicotine delivery devices that are not FDA approved as cessation products.

The Greater Joliet Area YMCA reserves the right to terminate facility privileges at any time for inappropriate behavior or conduct detrimental to its members or the organization.

Building & Room Schedules The Y schedules rooms in the building to allow for classes and open times. ou can find room schedules in the facility or posted online by visiting www.jolietymca.org.

Members can also access, view and set reminders for our free fitness classes and community events by signing-up to receiving weekly emails through on our online fitness schedule. To subscribe, visit www.jolietymca.org.

Locker Rooms We encourage members to bring locks to secure their belongings while visiting the Y. Items may not be stored in lockers overnight. The Y does not provide towels. The Y is not responsible for lost or stolen items. Children up to the age of five may accompany a parent of the opposite sex into the locker room.

Racquetball Court Racquets and racquetballs are available at the Membership Desk at the Smith Family YMCA. Please call ahead for court and equipment availability.

Gym Gym schedules are available at the branches and online at www.jolietymca.org. Times are subject to change due to classes, leagues or special events.

Open Gym: Members, ages eight and older, may participate in activities in the gym during designated times.

Family Gym: We set aside time for families to enjoy activities together in our gym. Children under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult during these times.

Full Court: This time is set aside for adults ages 18 and over to play full court basketball.

Wellness Center The Wellness Center is available for members ages 16 and over. We ask that members be courteous and put away equipment when finished using it and refrain from talking on their cell phones while in the Wellness Center. Teens (ages 13-15), who have completed the Wellness Center Certification Class, may utili e the cardio and strength machines. For safety reasons, only members ages 16 and over may use the free weights.

The Greater Joliet Area YMCA accepts cash, check, MasterCard, Visa or Discover.

In most cases, phone registration is accepted for current members when paying by a credit card or electronic funds transfer (EFT). Outstanding balances must be paid before a member will be allowed to register for future programs.

All classes have a maximum and minimum number of participants. When possible, classes will be added to accommodate wait lists and to expand those offerings that are in high demand. Classes below the minimum will be combined when possible, and as a last alternative, will be cancelled.

Lock-ins are available on Friday nights and Saturdays depending on location. Doors will be locked at 10 p.m. and pick-up times vary by branch. Overnight rentals include the first two hours of open pool time.

A maximum of 75 participants will be allowed in the pool.

FACILITY RENTALS AT THE YMCA Y facilities, including gyms, pools and outdoor recreation areas, are available to rent for special events and overnight lock-ins for schools, churches and scouts.

SUPERVISED PLAYROOM

PARENTS’ NIGHT OUT

Healthy parents are happy parents. Let your child have fun at the while you take time for yourself to get fit.

There is no need to call ahead. Parents must remain in the facility while their children are in the playroom.

Ages 6 months-8 years

Parents’ ight Out (P O) is held on the first Friday of each month to give parents some much-needed time to themselves while their kids have fun at the Y. Under the supervision of YMCA staff, kids get to play games, eat pi a and swim in our lap pool.

Holiday Shop and Drop Attention all parents! If you’re in need of a little time to yourselves, sign the kids up for our special Holiday Shop and Drop at the YMCA! We encourage you to take this opportunity to spend the afternoon holiday shopping, baking or wrapping presents. We will keep your kiddos entertained while creating holiday crafts, watching movies and playing gym games. Pre-registration is required and all participants must be potty trained.

CRAFTS & CREATIONS Make it a Creative Play Date Do you have a knack for arts and crafts? Do you love creating fun projects? Join The Artsy Bunch, a monthly arts and crafts club, for the creator in you.

Meet with an instructor and start designing your masterpiece. This program will culminate in an art exhibit featuring club member creations.

Programming runs from August to May. A $45 non-refundable registration fee (per family)*, the first of 10 installment payments and YMCA membership fee (if applicable) is due upon registering. The remaining nine payments are paid via automatic withdrawal from a checking account.

Debit and credit cards also accepted. Participants may start attending four business days after the day registration is completed.

As part of its Kid Zone program, the Galowich and Smith Family YMCAs provides recreational before and after school activities for students at schools in the Joliet, Troy, Rockdale and Minooka school districts. Children do arts and crafts, play games, develop friendships and learn lessons that will last a lifetime.

On select full days out of school, registered participants may spend the day with friends and the Kid Zone staff at the YMCA. Pre-registration is required. Please note: Refunds cannot be given to those who later are unable to attend. All participants should dress for the weather and bring a lunch, two healthy snacks, drinks, swimsuit and towel.

Youth Basketball League

ACHIEVE MORE TOGETHER AS A TEAM When kids play sports, they get more than just exercise. Besides being physically healthier, they have higher self-esteem and a healthier body image. Kids who play sports perform better in school, develop better interpersonal skills, and work better in groups.

The Y Youth Sports program maximi es the positive effects of playing sports by emphasi ing healthy competition and promoting teamwork. The Y focuses on the life lessons that can be learned from sports, and coaches strive to instill a positive self-image in each player. Most importantly, in the YMCA league, everyone plays and everyone wins!

Divisions Jr. YBL (Ages 4-Kindergarten) Games will be played Saturday mornings at the Galowich Family YMCA, Smith Family YMCA or Heritage Trail Elementary School.

Grades 1-2 and 3-4 Games will be played Saturday mornings at the Galowich Family YMCA, Smith Family YMCA, Heritage Trail or Troy Crossroads Elementary School.

Grades 5-6 Games will be played Saturday mornings at the Galowich Family YMCA, Smith Family YMCA or Troy Crossroads Elementary School.

American Red Cross Lifeguarding The can help you become certified in American Red Cross Lifeguarding.

Students will learn professional responsibilities, First aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED and Lifeguarding.

Pre-requisites: It is recommended that participants are able to complete the following pre-requisites prior to registering for the class: • Must be able to complete a continuous 300-yard swim • Must be able to tread water for two minutes without hands • Must complete a timed swim to retrieve a ten-pound object from under ten feet of water To schedule an appointment with the Aquatics Director, please call your local branch.

Refunds will not be given for students who do not successfully complete the class. Class must have a minimum of three participants in order to run.

Additional certificates trainings will be available at the end of each class: Anaphylaxis & Epinephrine Auto Injector, Blood Borne Pathogens, and Administering Emergency Oxygen.

Attendance at every class is mandatory.

STRONG SWIMMERS

CONFIDENT KIDS In Y classes, not only are you taught how to swim in a caring way, but you also learn about yourself, about safety and rescue skills and about water activities you can enjoy for a lifetime.

THERE’S AN AQUATICS PROGRAM FOR EVERYONE. GENERAL POOL RULES OPEN SWIM: All members may participate in activities in the pool during open swim. All children (under 16) will be swim tested. Children (under 10) must be accompanied by an adult on the pool deck. Children who do not pass the Yellow or Blue swim test, must also be accompanied by an adult in the water.

LAP SWIM: There is always one lane available for lap swimming for members. Children, who pass the blue test, are permitted in the lap lanes and must be swimming laps. Swimmers in the lap lanes must swim continuous laps without stopping so as to not interfere with others sharing the lap lane.

POOL POLICIES SWIM TEST POLICY Children under 16 years of age will be swim tested by the guard on duty and will be required to wear the appropriate wristband for the duration of their visit. Testing MUST be done with every visit.

BLUE & YELLOW SWIMMERS under 10 years of age MUST have at least one supervising parent in the pool area at all times at a ratio of one adult to every three children.

RED SWIMMERS MUST have at least one parent IN THE WATER at all times at a ratio of one adult to every three children. Red swimmers shorter than 4 feet, 6 inches must wear a Coast Guard Approved otation device, and must be supervised by a parent in the water at a ratio of one adult to every two children.

BLUE WRISTBAND TEST Blue swimmers must be able to jump in the deep end, tread water for 10 seconds and swim to the shallow end of the pool using a hori ontal swim stroke without stopping or having assistance.

Blue wristband swimmers are permitted to swim in the shallow and deep ends of the pool.

YELLOW WRISTBAND TEST Yellow swimmers will be asked to enter the pool at the guard chair and swim to the shallow end of the pool using a hori ontal swim stroke without stopping or having assistance. Yellow wristband swimmers are not permitted past the 5 foot marker. The Yellow Test must be done without a life jacket.

RED WRISTBAND TEST All swimmers under 16 years of age who do not pass Blue or Yellow Swim Tests will be issued a Red wristband. Red swimmers MUST wear a life jacket at all times if they are shorter than 4 feet, 6 inches tall. Red swimmers are not permitted past the 4 foot marker.

PLEASE NOTE: Lifeguards may not always be able to give swim tests during busier times.

LIGHTNING AND THUNDER POLICY The pool and pool deck will be closed and cleared of all members in the event of lightning or thunder, and shall remain closed until 30 minutes after the last sighting.

YMCA Swim Lesson Policies and Procedures 1. The first day of each session is reserved for swim testing and evaluations. All appropriate changes will be made to ensure quality instruction for your child. If you have a question about your child’s swim level after the first day of class, please speak to your child’s instructor.

2. Children will be moved up to the next level once all of the skills in the previous level have been mastered.

Many skills in certain levels are dependent on physical development, strength and coordination. Please remember that each child is unique and develops at his or her own rate, and that progression through these levels varies greatly.

3. The Aquatics Department reserves the right to cancel and/or combine classes due to low enrollment.

4. In the event of a pool closure due to weather, sanitary closure, or acts of God, a water safety lesson will be taught outside the pool. Credits, refunds or make ups are not offered in place of safety classes.

5. Participants that withdraw from a swim class for medical reasons will receive a YMCA credit for the remaining classes if the request is accompanied by a doctor’s note.

All credits are valid for one year.

In stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action.

AQUATIC SPORTS & GAMES

Has your child ever wondered what it’s like to be a lifeguard or swim instructor?

Would your child be interested in learning lifesaving skills, including CPR and First Aid? Would they enjoy helping teach younger kids how to swim? If yes, your child may enjoy our Aquatic Leadership track.

In this Aquatic Sports & Games track, your child will learn basic water polo skills, such as shooting, passing and goalkeeping in a fun team environment. They will learn how to paddle and steer a canoe, as well as about boating and waterfront safety.

Other water sports and games included will vary, possibly including an in-water version of quidditch!

Is your child aged 12-14? Can your child retrieve a 10 pound object from the bottom of the deep end? Can your child also tread water for two minutes without using their hands?

Semi-Private Swim Lessons Two or more students of the same swimming ability may request semi-private lessons with our expert instructors.

Instructors may be requested, however availability may vary. Schedules must be arranged with the Aquatics Director. Semi-private swimming lessons begin one week after group swimming lessons. Two registrations for semi-private lessons must be made with two semiprivate swim lesson participants. These two participants must go at the same time with the same instructor for each class.

Adaptive Swim Lessons Our adaptive swim lesson program is designed for children with special needs. Each session starts one week after group swim lessons. The goal of this program is to provide basic water instruction and water safety skills in a therapeutic manner with the needs of each individual participant in mind. Participants may be placed individually or with other participants. In order to ensure that each participant is placed in the proper setting, instructor approval is required in order to register.

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps adults at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes reduce their risk for developing the disease by taking steps that will improve their overall health and well-being.

Featuring a CDC-approved curriculum, this yearlong program includes 16 weekly sessions, plus additional bi-weekly and monthly sessions, in a classroom-based setting. Our goal is to help you reduce your body weight by seven percent and increase your activity level to 150 minutes per week.

Adults with a BMI of 25 or above, who are at risk or have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, are eligible to participate.

Are you having trouble making baskets close to the rim? Are you not finishing your lay-ups as frequently as you should This class will focus on the necessary skills needed to master the art of close-range shooting on the basketball court.

WATER FITNESS These classes are all FREE to Facility Members.

The goal of Flowing Forms is to reduce stress while increasing strength and exibility. Our certified instructor will guide you through traditional yoga poses incorporated into an aquatic environment. The water allows for greater stability, while at the same time providing more resistance.

H2O Cardio Core In this class, you will perform exercises similar to those in the regular H2O Cardio class, but in shallow water only.

We incorporate workouts that keep your feet on the pool oor in order to increase your balance and core strength.

Rusty Hinges Taught by longtime instructor Angie Manheim, this water fitness program will benefit those who suffer from oint or mobility problems, are recovering from surgery, or simply need a slow, gentle form of exercise. Wave Walkers This impact-free workout in the deep end of the pool is excellent for men and women of all ages who want a challenging cardio workout that also develops muscular strength training and toning. Resistance exercises using bungees hitched to oat belts will be included. Participants must be comfortable swimming in the deep end without a otation device.

Volunteers at the Greater Joliet Area YMCA: • Lead our Board of Directors, Board of Trustees, Committees and Branch Advisory Councils • Raise funds to ensure the Y is accessible to all members of our community • Plan our annual Giving Gala • Coach our youth sports teams • Motivate and support youths in our teen programs to help them build the character strengths, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, smart life choices, and the pursuit of higher education and goals • Participate in opportunities to give back and support our neighbors through community service projects and events Our volunteers also play an important role in the success, quality and quantity of the programs we offer. The YMCA has been called the “alphabet soup” of social service because we address a variety of needs through our innovative and values-driven programming.
