EXPLORE THE Y WHY THE Y The Y is an association of people who have committed to put Christian principles into practice through programs that build healthy spirit, mind and body for all people, regardless of their ability to pa . e are a non-profit charita le organization established to provide programs and services to youth, adults and families in order to strengthen the community. The YMCA is funded locally. Funds raised through contributions, endowments and membership fees are used to provide services in Will, Grundy and part of Kendall Counties.

Updating Your Contact Information We ask our members to notify us of any changes in their contact Information, including email, phone or residential address. To update your contact information, please call (815) SAY-YMCA, use the “contact us” link on our website or stop by the Membership Desk during your next visit.

Credits and Refunds Program fees are not refundable. Classes missed due to weather, holidays, illness, acts of God, or choice of participant cannot be made up, credited or refunded. If the YMCA cancels a class due to low enrollment, participants will be issued a credit for a future program. Members who withdraw from a program for medical reasons and present a physician’s order will receive a credit for the remaining classes. When a class needs to be cancelled by the Y, the class will be rescheduled.

All credits are good for one year from the date issued. Members who withdraw from a class for non-medical reasons may be subject to a processing fee.

Insurance The YMCA assumes no responsibility for personal injuries or loss/damage of personal property while individuals are using YMCA facilities. It is recommended that participants make provisions to provide this coverage through their family insurance program. Anyone engaging in new physical activity or who may have health-related issues should consult a physician prior to starting fitness ro tines.

Child Supervision Children under the age of eight must be supervised by an adult at all times when using YMCA facilities.

Children under the age of ten must be supervised by an adult when using the pools. The Kids Corner supervised playroom is available during designated hours for Facility Members, ages six months to seven years old.

Building & Room Schedules The Y schedules rooms in the building to allow or classes and open ti es. Yo can find roo schedules in the facility or posted online by visiting www.jolietymca.org.

Child Abuse Prevention Policy The Greater Joliet Area YMCA is mandated by state law to report any suspected cases of child abuse or neglect to the appropriate authorities for investigation.

Members can also access, view and set reminders or o r ree fitness classes and co nit e ents by signing-up to receiving weekly emails through on o r online fitness sched le. To s scri e visit www.jolietymca.org.

Holidays The YMCA prorates classes on days when the buildings are closed for the following holidays: Easter, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, Christmas Day and New Year’s Day. The Y closes at 1 p.m. on Memorial Day, Labor Day, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

Locker Rooms We encourage members to bring locks to secure their belongings while visiting the Y. Items may not be stored in lockers overnight. The Y does not provide towels. The Y is not responsible for lost or stolen ite s. Children p to the age o fi e a accompany a parent of the opposite sex into the locker room.

Cell Phone Use Policy The use of cameras, video recorders, cell phones and/or any photographic devices is NOT ALLOWED in YMCA locker rooms, changing areas or restrooms. We also ask members to refrain from making or answering phone calls while using the Wellness Center. This is for the safety and privacy of all our members and participants.

No Smoking Policy In the interest of the health and safety of our staff and members, it is the policy of the Greater Joliet Area YMCA to forbid all forms of tobacco in any YMCA facilities or on the grounds of any YMCA property. YMCA grounds include: facilities, parking lots side al s fields par s and paths. To acco products prohibited include, but are not limited to, lit or unlit cigarettes (clove, bidis, kreteks), e-cigarettes, cigars, cigarillos, pipes, hookah products; any smokeless, dissolvable, or inhaled tobacco products, including but not limited to dip, chew, snuff or snus; and all nicotine delivery devices that are not FDA approved as cessation products.

The Greater Joliet Area YMCA reserves the right to terminate facility privileges at any time for inappropriate behavior or conduct detrimental to its members or the organization.

Family Locker Rooms Co-ed family locker rooms are available for members with children and members with special needs who require assistance.

Sauna & Steam Room The co-ed sauna and steam rooms are available for members ages 18 and over. Proper attire is required.

Wellness Center The Wellness Center is available for members ages 16 and over. We ask that members be courteous and p t a a e ip ent hen finished sing it and refrain from talking on their cell phones while in the Wellness Center. Teens (ages 13-15), who have co pleted the ellness Center Certification Class a tilize the cardio and strength achines. or safety reasons, only members ages 16 and over may use the free weights. Food is not allowed in the Wellness Center.

Gym Gym schedules are available at the branches and online at www.jolietymca.org. Times are subject to change due to classes, leagues or special events.

Open Gym: Members, ages eight and older, may participate in activities in the gym during designated times.

Adult Basketball: This time is set aside for adults ages 18 and over to play full court basketball.

The Greater Joliet Area YMCA accepts cash, check, MasterCard, Visa or Discover.

In most cases, phone registration is accepted for current members when paying by a credit card or electronic funds transfer (EFT). Outstanding balances must be paid before a member will be allowed to register for future programs.

All classes have a maximum and minimum number of participants. When possible, classes will be added to accommodate wait lists and to expand those offerings that are in high demand. Classes below the minimum will be combined when possible, and as a last alternative, will be cancelled.

General Information

KIDS CORNER PLAYROOM Fall Hours Begin August 28

Clothing And Diapers • YMCA staff members are not permitted to change diapers. If a child needs his/her diaper changed, parents will be paged over the intercom system. Parents must use their own diapers and supplies.

• Children must be fully covered on top and bottom at all times while in the Kids Corner play area. All walking children must wear shoes in Kids Corner; bare feet are not allowed.

• Children must be 3 years old or older and potty trained to play in the tunnels. Shoes may only be removed when children are playing in the play tunnels and children must wear socks while in the play tunnels.

Ages 6 months-7 years Monday-Saturday 8:15 a.m.-12:15 p.m.

Monday-Friday 4:15-8:30 p.m.

Sunday 8:30-11:30 a.m.

Let your children crawl through our tunnels and relax in our story area while you ta e ti e or o rsel to get fit. The ll ha e a last pla ing ith other children their age and you can rest assured they are in good hands with our staff. Schedules and hours can and do change based on our members’ needs. Schedules are posted online and are available at the Y.

• We ask that children do not bring toys or electronic devices from home to Kids Corner.

Security

Behavior

• Kids Corner is open to children, ages 6 months to 7 years old. Children may stay in the Kids Corner supervised play area for up to 2 hours each day.

• For safety and security reasons, members must present their membership card when they are checking a child into Kids Corner.

Replacement cards may be purchased at the Membership Desk.

• Children are not allowed in Kids Corner unless they have been checked in by a parent or guardian.

• For the safety and security of all children in Kids Corner, parents will only be allowed past the Check-In Desk to change a diaper.

• Parents/guardians must remain on YMCA property while their children are in the Kids Corner Playroom.

• In the event that a child is displaying unsafe or inappropriate behavior, the Kids Corner staff will use a “time-out” for children two years of age and older, and activity redirection for children younger than two.

• In the event a child hits or bites another child while in Kids Corner, parents will be paged immediately over the intercom system. If this behavior is found to be a continuous problem, that child may be removed from Kids Corner for a period of time.

• If a child begins to cry and cannot be comforted within 10 minutes while they are in Kids Corner, parents will be paged over the intercom system.

• The YMCA staff reserve the right to terminate or suspend Kids Corner privileges for any child who exhibits unsafe or inappropriate behavior.

SUPERVISED ACTIVITY CENTER (Ages 7-17 years)

Sick Children • For the safety and well-being of all members and staff, we ask that members do not bring sick children to the Kids Corner. If a child is not feeling well, becomes sick while in Kids Corner, or is showing signs or symptoms of being sick, parents will be paged over the intercom system.

The YMCA staff reserve the right to determine hether a child is s ficientl sic to e excl ded or removed from the Kids Corner.

Food And Drink • Children may bring a labeled sippy cup, with water only, to drink while in Kids Corner.

• YMCA staff members are not permitted to feed children while they are in Kids Corner.

Activity Center Guidelines (The Activity Center is designed for children, ages 7 years old and up.)

Activity Center Usage

Behavior

• Seven-year-old children must be signed in and out of the Activity Center by a parent or guardian who remains on YMCA property. Sevenyear-old children will not be allowed to leave the Activity Center unattended.

• Children, ages 8 and up, must sign in with the Activity Center attendant. Children, ages 8 and up, do not need to be signed in and out by a parent or guardian.

• During unsupervised hours, families are welcome to use the Activity Center. During this time, children, age 17 and under, will need to be supervised by an adult over the age of 18.

• Teens must abide by the YMCA Character Values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility when visiting the Activity Center.

• All members are responsible for keeping track of their personal items while using the Activity Center. The YMCA is not responsible for lost or stolen items.

• The YMCA reserves the right to suspend Activity Center privileges and limit usage of equipment to members who do not abide by YMCA policies and guidelines.

Computers And Equipment • Teens must sign in when using YMCA computers in the Activity Center. There is a 30 minute limit on all computers when others are waiting.

• Food and drinks are not allowed by the computers or other gaming equipment in the Activity Center.

• All members must sign in to use equipment such as tablets, games and computers in the Activity Center.

• Websites or games depicting violence or inappropriate content will not be allowed to be viewed or played on YMCA computers and tablets.

• Only YMCA staff members are allowed to change games on the gaming consoles or download new games onto YMCA tablets.

The C.W. Avery Family YMCA’s before and after school progra ser es children in all lainfield District 202 elementary schools. Children do arts and crafts, play games, develop friendships and learn lessons that will last a lifetime.

On select days out of school, children in grades K-8 are invited to spend the day with friends and Kid Zone staff at the C.W. Avery Family YMCA. All participants should dress for the weather, bring a sack lunch, a drink, snacks, a swimsuit and a towel. Please note: Refunds will not be given to those who are unable to attend. The registration deadline is 48 hours prior to the day off school.

LIFEGUARDING COURSE Featuring First Aid and CPR Instruction (with Water Park Option)

The purpose of the American Red Cross Lifeguarding Course is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to prevent, recognize and respond to a atic e ergencies and to pro ide care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over.

Participants must pass a pre-test, including a 300-yard swim, two minutes of treading water without the use of hands, and a timed swim to retrieve a 10-pound object from under 7.5 feet of water. At the end of the course, participants will test for Red Cross i eg ard irst Aid and C A D certifications.

A $50 deposit will be kept for participants who fail to pass the pre-test on the first da o class. articipants can sched le a FREE pre-test 2 weeks or more before the start date of the class.

Youth Basketball League

ACHIEVE MORE TOGETHER AS A TEAM When kids play sports, they get more than just exercise. Besides being physically healthier, they have higher self-esteem and a healthier body image. Kids who play sports perform better in school, develop better interpersonal skills, and work better in groups.

The Y Youth Sports program axi izes the positi e e ects o pla ing sports e phasizing healthy competition and promoting teamwork. The Y focuses on the life lessons that can be learned from sports, and coaches strive to instill a positive self-image in each player. Most importantly, in the YMCA league, everyone plays and everyone wins!

Divisions Jr. YBL (Ages 4-Kindergarten) Games are played on Saturdays at the C.W. Avery Family YMCA. Grades 1-2 Games are planned to be played on rida e enings at a lainfield school.

Grades 3-4 Games are planned to be played on Th rsda e enings at a lainfield school.

Grades 5-6 Games are planned to be played on rida e enings at a lainfield school.

Masters Swimming

Our Masters Swim Team welcomes the ardent swimmer or tri-athlete who is looking to improve his/her swimming endurance and technique in a team environment. Workouts will focus primarily on the o r co petiti e stro es tter backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle.

All participants must be strong swimmers and should be able to complete 50 yards of all four of the competitive strokes.

Participants will swim an average of 2,500-3,500 yards at each workout.

Dancers of all ages and skill levels are invited to attend. Dancers will learn a shorty choreographed piece and present what they learned in a group setting. All participants make the team and will be placed in levels based on their ability. Competition level dancers will also present their solo pieces.

Audition Packets Audition packets will be available at the Y on Friday, August 25 between 5 and 7 p.m. Packets must be completed prior to auditioning on Saturday, August 26.

STRONG SWIMMERS

CONFIDENT KIDS In Y classes, not only are you taught how to swim in a caring way, but you also learn about yourself, about safety and rescue skills and about water activities you can enjoy for a lifetime.

THERE’S AN AQUATICS PROGRAM FOR EVERYONE. GENERAL POOL RULES OPEN SWIM: All members may participate in activities in the pool during open swim. All children (under 16) will be swim tested. Children (under 10) must be accompanied by an adult on the pool deck. Children who do not pass the Yellow or Blue swim test, must also be accompanied by an adult in the water.

LAP SWIM: There is always one lane available for lap swimming for members. Children, who pass the blue test, are permitted in the lap lanes and must be swimming laps. Swimmers in the lap lanes must swim continuous laps without stopping so as to not interfere with others sharing the lap lane.

POOL POLICIES SWIM TEST POLICY Children under 16 years of age will be swim tested by the guard on duty and will be required to wear the appropriate wristband for the duration of their visit. Testing MUST be done with every visit.

BLUE & YELLOW SWIMMERS under 10 years of age MUST have at least one supervising parent in the pool area at all times at a ratio of one adult to every three children.

RED SWIMMERS MUST have at least one parent IN THE WATER at all times at a ratio of one adult to every three children. Red swimmers shorter than 4 feet, 6 inches must wear a Coast G ard Appro ed otation de ice and st e supervised by a parent in the water at a ratio of one adult to every two children.

BLUE WRISTBAND TEST Blue swimmers must be able to jump in the deep end, tread water for 10 seconds and swim to the shallo end o the pool sing a horizontal s i stroke without stopping or having assistance.

Blue wristband swimmers are permitted to swim in the shallow and deep ends of the pool.

YELLOW WRISTBAND TEST Yellow swimmers will be asked to enter the pool at the guard chair and swim to the shallow end o the pool sing a horizontal s i stro e without stopping or having assistance. Yellow wristband swimmers are not permitted past the 5 foot marker. The Yellow Test must be done without a life jacket.

RED WRISTBAND TEST All swimmers under 16 years of age who do not pass Blue or Yellow Swim Tests will be issued a Red wristband. Red swimmers MUST wear a life jacket at all times if they are shorter than 4 feet, 6 inches tall. Red swimmers are not permitted past the 4 foot marker.

PLEASE NOTE: Lifeguards may not always be able to give swim tests during busier times.

LIGHTNING AND THUNDER POLICY The pool and pool deck will be closed and cleared of all members in the event of lightning or thunder, and shall remain closed until 30 minutes after the last sighting.

New n sso Swim Leulum Curric YMCA Swim Lesson Policies and Procedures 1. The first da o each session is reserved for swim testing and evaluations. All appropriate changes will be made to ensure quality instruction for your child. If you have a question about your child’s swim le el a ter the first da o class please speak to your child’s instructor.

2. Children will be moved up to the next level once all of the skills in the previous level have been mastered.

Many skills in certain levels are dependent on physical development, strength and coordination. Please remember that each child is unique and develops at his or her own rate, and that progression through these levels varies greatly.

3. The Aquatics Department reserves the right to cancel and/or combine classes due to low enrollment.

Make-up Lessons and Swim Credit 1. One make up class may be accommodated per session if schedules allow. Either 24 hours notice, or a doctor’s note, must be provided in order to schedule a make up. Make up lessons will take place in other classes running with open slots during the same 5-week session, and may not always be available. Credits or refunds will not be given in place of make up lessons.

2. In the event of a pool closure due to weather, sanitary closure, or acts of God, a water safety lesson will be taught outside the pool. Credits, refunds or make ups are not offered in place of safety classes.

3. Participants that withdraw from a swim class for medical reasons will receive a YMCA credit for the remaining classes if the request is accompanied by a doctor’s note.

All credits are valid for one year.

4. All program fees are non-refundable.

In stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action.

Has your child ever wondered what it’s like to be a lifeguard or swim instructor?

Would your child be interested in learning lifesaving skills, including CPR and First Aid? Would they enjoy helping teach younger kids how to swim? If yes, your child may enjoy our Aquatic Leadership track.

In this Aquatic Sports & Games track, your child will learn basic water polo skills, such as shooting, passing and goalkeeping in a fun team environment. They will learn how to paddle and steer a canoe, as well as about boating and waterfront safety.

Other water sports and games included will vary, possibly including an in-water version of quidditch!

Is your child aged 12-14? Can your child retrieve a 10 pound object from the bottom of the deep end? Can your child also tread water for two minutes without using their hands?

ADVANCE & ENHANCE YOUR LIFE Diabetes Prevention Program

The YMCA’s Diabetes Prevention Program helps adults at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes reduce their risk for developing the disease by taking steps that will improve their overall health and well-being.

Featuring a CDC-approved curriculum, this yearlong program includes 16 weekly sessions, plus additional bi-weekly and monthly sessions, in a classroom-based setting. Our goal is to help you reduce your body weight by seven percent and increase your activity level to 150 minutes per week.

Adults with a BMI of 25 or above, who are at risk or have been diagnosed with pre-diabetes, are eligible to participate.

The generosity of others is at the core of the Y’s existence.

It is only through the support of our hundreds of thousands of volunteers and public and private donors that we are able to give back to the communities we serve.

Volunteers at the Greater Joliet Area YMCA: • Lead our Board of Directors, Board of Trustees, Committees and Branch Advisory Councils • Raise funds to ensure the Y is accessible to all members of our community • Plan our annual Giving Gala • Coach our youth sports teams • Motivate and support youths in our teen programs to help them build the character strengths, skills and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, smart life choices, and the pursuit of higher education and goals • Participate in opportunities to give back and support our neighbors through community service projects and events • Help facilitate our Kid’s Triathalon.

Our volunteers also play an important role in the success, quality and quantity of the programs we offer. We welcome and appreciate anyone 16 years of age or older who volunteers his or her time and expertise. A background check must be completed before volunteers are allowed to participate in any Y program or activity.

The YMCA has been called the “alphabet soup” of social service because we address a variety of needs through our innovative and values-driven programming. Last year, the four-branches within the Greater Joliet Area YMCA answered 8,000 calls for help in the form of $1.1 million in scholarship assistance to make our facilities, programs and services accessible for all. Each year, that need grows. And yet our arms open wider.
