Born from the disciplined ingenuity of the South Pacific, this issue of Indesign explores how working within real limits is unlocking new forms of innovation, blending advanced tools, material knowledge, and cultural intelligence. Around the world, economic pressure, climate volatility, resource scarcity, and rapid technological change are transforming the conditions in which creative work is made. AI is redrawing authorship and agency. Time compresses. Resources tighten. Constraint has shifted from a limitation to a catalyst. It is emerging as a powerful force that sharpens thinking and redefines creative value. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the wealth of diversity and quality seen in the INDE.Awards (p. 19), where projects from across the region are gathered and given the high praise and status they have earned. This issue not only celebrates the outstanding projects of the year but looks back on 10 years of the INDE.Awards’ Best of the Best (p. 44). The projects explored in this issue are drawn from the region as exemplars of what and how architecture reflects the culture of the various regions within the Indo Pacific (from p. 106). They are as diverse as 90 Devonport Road, a workplace in Tauranga, Aotearoa, by Warren and Mahoney that nurtures respect and pride, and a resort drawing on Yurt architecture on the Xinjiang grasslands of the Tian Shan mountains, that reinforces the significance of traditional typologies. From Suzhou, we have a remarkable theatre etched from the remains of a factory by Wutopia Lab, while in India, Architecture Discipline has reimagined Ziya at the Oberoi as a silvery oasis. In Australia, place and culture are given precedence with fjcstudio’s new studio in Australia Square, Flinders Motel by Tate, the new Footscray Hospital by COX and BLP, and the brilliant Potter Museum of Art by Woods Marsh — all exploring architecture at the confluence of experimentation and rigour. The significance of embedded culture in projects is unprecedented, and we look at two unique practices’ ability to shape understanding and respect, with profiles on Haumi in Aotearoa and Jirra Lulla in Australia (p. 92). The spotlight on cultures of the region continues with our own thoughts about what makes us change and how we use those catalysts to both address concerns and take new directions, while Cairo-based designer Louis Barthélemy gives us his thoughts on the need for repatriation and restitution (p.156). Finally, when asked to nominate people, products, art, lighting, and furniture for the In Short section, we went straight to the collaborators and artisans we admire most and have worked with over the years or hope to work with in the future (p. 56). That said, there were far too many exceptional designers to include everyone, and what we realised in the process was the absolute abundance of talent and creativity our region has to offer. Andrew is a Principal at Warren and Mahoney and Chairperson of the Board. An accomplished and awarded architect, he is recognised for his design leadership and ability to shape outcomes through collaboration and strong conceptual clarity across complex projects. His recent appointment as an independent director to the New Zealand Green Building Council reflects his commitment to advancing sustainable design practices and technologies to positively influence the future of environmentally responsible development in the built sector.
Barrington Gohns is a Principal and Australian Head of Design at Warren and Mahoney. Working within the realities of constraint, he brings a collaborative and designled approach to shaping architecture that is grounded in place. His work combines strategic thinking, material intelligence, and collective process to turn complexity into clarity, delivering outcomes that are purposeful, resilient, and enduring.

Obsessed with the work of British fashion icon John Galliano, he gained his first position at Dior under the helm of Galliano at 20. Since then, he has launched his own textiles range while working as a designer for many of the major houses including Gucci, Ferragamo, Christian Louboutin, and Pierre Frey.
