Hello!

It is with absolute pleasure that I have joined forces with the creative drive of Indesign to cra the 25 Year Anniversary issue. Congratulations!

Exploring the Issue theme of “Celebration”, we asked some of the very first architects, designers, and artists the magazine covered to share a recent project and a few words. The most compelling discovery was the simple fact that great creatives continue to make great work (In Focus p.86), and, that Indesign has been right there supporting them from the start.

Celebrating 25 years of Indesign, we pushed the issue deep into the world of celebration, with joy a deciding factor for every project or person selected for this incredible issue. How we celebrate, the hotels we love, the bars that spark trysts, chefs and artists that make the heart sing, it is, in short, a tribute to everything that a party should be, including the announcement of the INDE.Awards 2025 Winners! (p.19).

The extraordinary architecture and interior design around us is exceptional, and our dear friend Jan Henderson shares her thoughts on our own practice, MOD’s latest project, The Standard, Singapore (In Situ p.130). She also set her pen to celebrate Lane 23 by K2LD in Kuala Lumpur, and profiled the incredible chef, Darren Teoh, also in KL. TuBu in India, by Studio Renesa, is one of the most unusual hospitality projects to emerge and DISSH Armadale, by Brahman Perera, is just gorgeous. TAOA 798 Studio by TAOA in Beijing is a silvery box of infinite beauty, while The Brewery in Sydney by Tzannes sets the bar high for adaptive reuse. A whole new Village in Surry Hills by SJB, ASPECT Studios, and Studio Prineas has emerged, as has the amazingly twisted building, Bundarra, at Moore Park, by Smart Design Studio and Those Architects.

We sat down for conversations with some of my favourite creatives, namely Alicia C. Kirwan, Eric Tobua and Manuelle Gautrand (In Conversation p.186), and profiled some extraordinary characters shaping the world around us, including Dawn Ng, David Hicks, David Sequeira, and the aforementioned Darren Teoh (In Famous p.104).

Happy Birthday Indesign, and congratulations on 25 years of se ing the bar high!

Surry

Undeniably one of the nicest people in the design world, the Singapore-based founder and design director of the Ministry of Design (MOD), Colin Seah, is an acknowledged expert in the world of creatives. Named as Luminary award winner in the INDE.Awards 2024, he has twice been the recipient of Singapore’s highest design accolade, the President’s Design Award. He is also a three-time Grand Prize Winner of the Gold Key Award, the highest international hospitality accolade.

Founding MOD in 2004 with life partner Joy Chan Seah, the practice has gone from strength to strength with 140 projects realised across 30 cities. Moreover, since 2020 Colin has worked with the Singapore Tourism Board to redefine Singapore as a destination. Architecturally trained in the US and now licensed in Singapore, Colin honed his sensibilities working for Rem Koolhaas and Daniel Libeskind. He also spent four years at the National University of Singapore’s Department of Architecture researching design pedagogy and serving as a design critic. In short, he is a superstar of no small order and a delight to work with.

Introducing the Voices of Indesign –

The Celebration Issue

Jovian Lim Photographer

Singapore-based artist and photographer, Jovian Lim, works within the liminal spaces of perception, imbuing each body of work with ethereal qualities that hover between realism and romance. Blurring the line between the simple and sublime, Jovian instils commonplace materials with painterly qualities of consummate beauty. Within his practice, Jovian explores the rarefied forms of expression as a tangential exploration of that which is immutable, stripped of time, space, and particularity. In parallel with his artistic oeuvre, Jovian is a highly regarded architectural photographer and Indesign is beyond thrilled to include this exceptional artist.

The Standard, Singapore, by Ministry of Design, page 132.

German-born founder of Spacelab Design, Sylvia has been the longstanding art director for Indesign, Habitus and Luxury Travel magazines in the Indesign Media portfolio, and many more publications besides. With a sharp eye for editorial design, her art direction in the worlds of architecture, art, and design has led to impressive collaborations around the world. Her architecture and design portfolio includes work across magazines, books, websites, and advertising campaigns. For this special issue of Indesign, she took on the role of writer and sat down in Paris with one of her favourite architects, Manuelle Gautrand.

Jane Rankin-Reid Writer

Tasmanian born writer and art critic Jane Rankin-Reid has been at the forefront of art writing since her heady days in New York during the 1980s through to her continued world travels where art and design are viewed with her sharp gaze. Her work has been published in Le Monde, The Guardian UK and in a number of Australian publications. Her 1980s downtown New York memoir The Colour of Night has been serialised in the UK and the USA.
