With everything a home needs and nothing more, some very good things come in the smallest of packages.
Our region is doing amazing things in architecture, interior design, art, and craft. Furniture in particular is impressive, with some of the best designers and makers collaborating to improve our lives through their very special talent. I think collaboration is key to creating projects that speak directly to the owner, and I am incredibly proud to present Gable House, which was a collaboration with the very fine architects at Folk Architecture (p. 132).
Kitchens and bathrooms have got to be the most personal spaces in any home and are often where any renovation project begins. The chaos of family life around the kitchen bench is what makes a home. Conversely, the bathroom is where we retreat and regroup. In this issue, we look at some of the amazing work being done in these spaces by leading designers including Mim Design, Hecker Guthrie, Adriana Hanna, Daniel Boddam, Mathieson Architects, and Smac Studio (p. 82).
As this is the kitchen and bathroom issue, the profiles (p. 59) start with Josh Niland, that astonishing chef at Saint Peter who is rethinking how we approach fish. In Queensland, we chat with Michael Cook and delve deep into his photographic representations of identity. Naarm / Melbourne designer Ella Saddington of Cordon Salon is a modern-day armour maker, turning this traditional craft into contemporary pieces that I love.
The On Location projects (p. 130) take us on a ride through some of my favourite architects and interior designers.
The work of James Garvan is mind-blowing, with huge white curves and masses of light. Melanie Beynon has created a colourfilled home that is alive with art. Just inland from Byron Bay, Polly Harbison has literally crafted a home from the land, while in Orange in the central west of NSW, Casey Brown Architecture have created the third in a series of permanent camps — love them! There is a great house in Queensland by Nicholas Elias with a huge round swinging door. Flack Studio have us all agog with a hotel that is absolutely chockers with art. Space and light are well served in a great house by Paul Brace, as is House by the Grove by Taliesyn in Karnataka on the west coast of India.
I’ve also selected some of my go-to designers, makers, relaxers, invigorators, and dream pieces for Lightbox (p. 23).
Get ready to dream big.

The principal of Studio Doherty, and this issue’s Guest Editor, Mardi is the darling of residential, retail, and hospitality interior design, where her use of colour in particular defines her projects. Whether bold and adventurous or subtle and soft, her projects always reflect her clients’ lives and aspirations. Described by a client as having X-ray vision, where she’s able to see all that is possible by peeling walls away and creating new spaces, she performs a brick and mortar version of alchemy. Mardi is a regular speaker on interior design ideas and practice and has been a judge for many interior design awards. Moreover, Studio Doherty continues to support new talent through RMIT University’s School of Interior Design’s INDEX graduate exhibition.

In her role as Editor of Habitus Magazine, Gillian brings a twentyyear oeuvre of design writing to the publication. Focusing on architecture, design, art, and interior design, her breadth of knowledge is expansive and generous, with all genres and styles regarded for their own merit. For the highly collectable series, Gillian is working with the best designers in the Indo-Pacific region to create content that is engaged and varied. Moreover, by creating each issue through the lens of her Guest Editor, their unique personality is allowed to shape each issue of Habitus. The result is always surprising.

David has worked in the interior design industry for more than 30 years as a curator, consultant, creative director, and editor. His publishing career began as design editor for Belle magazine and as Editor-in-Chief of Vogue Living Australia (2003–2012), where he elevated Australian designers globally. He was inducted into the Design Institute of Australia Hall of Fame and made an Honouree of the Australian Design Centre. Simon Whitbread is a Northern Beaches–based architectural and interiors photographer with over 15 years’ experience capturing residential and commercial projects across Australia. Raised in the same coastal pocket of Sydney he still calls home, Simon lives with his wife Erin and their four children; Frankie, Asher, Reece and Jude. Simon’s work is shaped by a strong connection to light, landscape, and lived-in spaces, capturing spaces with clarity, atmosphere, and intent. He is drawn to photography for its balance of creative freedom and collaboration, working closely with architects and designers to document considered, well-resolved spaces.
Sarah is always on point as an art, architecture, and design writer. A member of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA), Sarah has most recently embarked on a career as an art advisor following her role as Director, Galleries at Sydney Contemporary. With over two decades’ experience working in the art world, Sarah has previously held positions at the Biennale of Sydney, Liverpool Street Gallery, and Ivan Dougherty Gallery, UNSW. Sarah was a Board Director of Art Month Sydney during its inaugural year, and for many years has been an Asia Pacific Correspondent in the architecture and design media.
Having worked in professional sport for over a decade, Timothy is now the Digital Editor at Indesign. With a focus on architecture, his published writing has included topics from the philosophy of sport to the politics of North Africa. He studied architecture at the University of Sydney, where he was the Managing Editor of CIRCA Journal, and he holds a Master’s degree in English Literature and a Bachelor’s in Philosophy and Politics. Timothy is especially interested in architectural theory and history. Based in Sydney, he divides his time between there, Marrakech, and northern England.

Living and working across Australia, America, Asia, and most recently Mexico, Gina Fairley’s career has spanned exhibition management, curatorial practice, and arts and craft journalism. She has been a contributing editor in Hong Kong, visual arts editor for mastheads in Australia, and has a particular passion for lived sustainable design. She also takes people on extraordinary architectural tours through her role with The Art Gallery of New South Wales.
It was while watching Top Gun as a teenager that Anson decided he wanted to be a pilot, mainly because he wanted to travel the world and have an interesting life. But soon after completing an aviation science degree, flying and wearing a uniform soon lost its appeal. Fast-forward 20 years and he is busy shooting for editorial and advertising clients around the world. “When I’m not on the road with a camera, life at home in Sydney is also amazing (and hectic) with my wife Jody and my three girls Scarlett, Roxie and Olive.”
