The fi rst word

There is an incredible richness to the Australian architecture and design industry that I think the rest of the world is really starting to tap into. Each year in Milan or at Maison&Objet in Paris, I am seeing more and more Australian and Asian Pacific designers, artists and makers sitting alongside their counterparts from everywhere in the world. One of my favourite artists is Indivi Sutton, so naturally I had to grab one of her pieces for New York House (p. 136).

Our architects and interior designers are likewise in a belle epoque of incredible work, with SJB’s The EVE Hotel the hottest ticket in Sydney for glamorous accommodation (p. 146). More beachy, but completely fabulous, is Cibaria by Luchetti Krelle (p. 172). Residential architecture continues to shine with great work coming from Studio Doherty (p. 180), Arent&Pyke (p. 196), AM Architecture (p. 164), and a really surprisingly delightful blast of colour from David Langston-Jones (p. 188). Further afield, Yana Molodykh is designing dream interiors in Ukraine and her work is astounding (p. 154).

This is the Kitchen & Bathroom issue, so I have started with Bellevue Hill House (p. 78). It is my second interior for this home and it is interesting to think about what you would change in a do-over. As it turns out, quite a lot. We look at baths, yes baths, who doesn’t love them! (p. 88). We also look at some great bathrooms (p. 97) and kitchens (p. 113) from great designers. They are all completely di erent, but all totally aspirational – architectural eye candy at its best.

I have reserved the profiles for three of my favourite collaborators or colleagues: Myles Baldwin, who I have worked with on many projects over the years (p. 48); Sarah Robson, an artist whose strong work always looks amazing in my more minimalist homes (p. 56); and Jase Sullivan, an interior designer whose work is really making a mark and someone I have been following closely since our paths crossed on homeMADE (p. 66).

There is always so much design going on at this time of year, with products being launched in Milan and elsewhere. I have selected some of my favourites and I hope a varied and interesting cross section of the incredible work taking shape around us (p. 23).

BELLEVUE HILL HOUSE #

One of the most inspiring and thoughtful writers in the realm of architecture and design, Aleesha has written and commentated on every aspect of the creative world shaping our lives for the past ten years. As the previous Editor of Habitus she introduced Australia to a plethora of architects, interior designers, artist, artisans and the shifts in thinking behind these talented makers.

Having fi rst trained and practised as an interior designer, her passion for mid-century design and architecture began while living and working in Berlin. She continues to enrich our world as a contributing writer, with her extraordinary ability for getting to the heart of the issue always impressing.

It was while watching Top Gun as a teenager that Anson decided he wanted to be a pilot, mainly because he wanted to travel the world and have an interesting life. But soon after completing an aviation science degree, fl ying and wearing a uniform soon lost its appeal. Fast-forward years and he is busy shooting for editorial and advertising clients around the world. “When I’m not on the road with a camera, life at home in Sydney is also amazing (and hectic) with my wife Jody and my three girls Scarlett, Roxie and Olive.”

In her role as Editor of Habitus Magazine, Gillian brings a twentyyear oeuvre of design writing to the publication. Focusing on architecture, design, art and interior design, her breadth of knowledge is expansive and generous, with all genres and styles regarded for their own merit. For the highly collectable series of Six, Gillian is working with the best designers in the Indo-Pacifi region to create content that is engaged and varied. Moreover, by creating each issue through the lens of her Guest Editors, their unique personality is allowed to shape each issue of Habitus. The result is always surprising.

Sarah is always on point as an art, architecture and design writer. A member of the International Art Critics Association (AICA), Sarah was most recently Director, Galleries at Sydney Contemporary – Australasia’s premier art fair. In this role she held the curatorial responsibility for Installation Contemporary featuring largescale projects spanning the iconic, heritage-listed Carriageworks. With over two decades’ experience working in the art world, Sarah has previously held positions at the Biennale of Sydney, Liverpool Street Gallery and Ivan Dougherty Gallery, UNSW. Timothy is Digital Editor at Indesign after having worked in professional sport for over a decade. With a focus on architecture, his published writing has included topics from the philosophy of sport to the politics of North Africa. He studied architecture at the University of Sydney, where he was the Managing Editor of CIRCA Journal, as well as holding a Master’s degree in English Literature and a Bachelor’s in Philosophy and Politics. Timothy is especially interested in architectural theory and history. Based in Sydney, he divides his time between there, Marrakech and Northern England.

George is one of Australia’s most beloved writers. With a twentyyear portfolio across fashion and design, her articles covering the Australian fashion industry and the international collections in Milan, Paris, New York and London have been a revelation of sparkling wit. Her work across design and architecture is similarly insightful, with a keen eye for what does and doesn’t work, plus a fearless approach to quizzing her subjects, as both their design and intent come under her gaze. In this issue she throws us into the sunny foodie world of Cibaria by Luchetti Krelle.
