Introduction Art Galleries Association, Singapore (AGAS) is proud to launch our ART IN MOTION event, which focuses on making gallery visits easy and accessible to foreign visitors and locals alike.

AGAS is a non-profit organisation comprising 28 leading art galleries in Singapore. Established in 1996, it is committed to the development of visual arts and the gallery trade in Singapore. We are the industry body that governs professional and ethical gallery practice in Singapore and serve to increase public awareness of the roles and responsibilities of art dealers. It is the duty of AGAS and its members to promote art appreciation in the community, thereby enhancing the value and understanding of art and culture in Singapore.

Gallery owners are met with the constant challenge of developing audiences for their places of business. AGAS aims to address this challenge by developing an annual event – ART IN MOTION – to coincide with Singapore Art Week. During this week, AGAS will entice local and foreign art audiences to commercial gallery spaces throughout Singapore – essential spaces for discovery and discourse in the visual arts ecology. We believe that creating such opportunities is invaluable to galleries here in Singapore.

ART IN MOTION will feature exhibitions, artist talks, art installations, and live art demonstrations held in and around all our participating galleries.

Whether you are a collector, an artist, an art enthusiast, or just someone curious to learn more about our AGAS art galleries in Singapore, ART IN MOTION provides a platform to meet your needs.

02 Introduction

We are delighted to welcome you to the first edition of ART IN MOTION. Involving 13 galleries dotted around the island of Singapore, this unprecedented coordination of activities during Singapore Art Week builds up to a free guided bus tour of galleries over the weekend. This project reflects the AGAS mission to promote art appreciation to communities, thereby enhancing the value and understanding of art and culture in Singapore.

Features of this year’s ART IN MOTION includes a launch function inaugurated by international artist Tatsuo Miyajima at Les Bouchons Rive Gauche at Robertson Quay, a temporary public artwork Perfect Day installed at Loof rooftop bar in the Bras Basah Cultural Precinct, an emerging artist pop-up gallery at ARTSPACE@Helutrans in Tanjong Pagar Distripark, an art film screening by Cai Lei at Linda Gallery in Dempsey Hill, and a host of talks, brunches, and cocktail functions in various locations around Singapore throughout the week.

Singapore is historically and geographically positioned as the centre of South East Asian art and culture and is a key driver in the collection, education, and dissemination of art and its histories in the region. Surrounded by diverse art communities reflected in the range of its gallery offerings, ART IN MOTION presents a fresh, wide-ranging, and current view of Singapore’s art scene for collectors, art professionals, and art enthusiasts alike.

We sincerely thank the Singapore Tourism Board for their support, as well as all our partners who have helped make ART IN MOTION a success. Tatsuo Miyajima

Tatsuo Miyajima is one of Japan’s foremost sculptors and installation artists. Employing contemporary materials such as electric circuits, video, and computers, Miyajima’s supremely technological works have centred on his use of digital light-emitting diode (LED) counters. “Time connects everything,” says Miyajima. “I want people to think about the universe and the human spirit.” Miyajima, born in 1957, lives and works in Ibaraki, Japan. Recent exhibitions include Ullens Center, Beijing (2011); Museo D’arte Contemporanea Rome (2004); Artsonje Center, Seoul, (2002); Hayward Gallery, London (1997).

Tatsuo Miyajima is the ART IN MOTION 2014 guestof-honour and will be represented by Lisson Gallery at Art Stage Singapore 2014.

Sleepless in Bedok, Hong Sek Chern, 2013

Established in 1991, Art-2 Gallery functions as a contemporary art gallery and art consultancy. Specialising in contemporary sculpture, paintings and ceramics, the gallery is known for promoting a high standard of art from the Southeast Asian region through its bold exhibitions and commissions. One of the only galleries to specialise in public sculpture and three-dimensional work in Singapore, Art-2 Gallery has been a consultant on several high profile art projects, working from conception to installation of artworks.

Sleepless in the City by Hong Sek Chern 13 January to 29 January 2014

The starting point for this series of oil paintings by Hong Sek Chern is the etching “The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters” (1797–1798) by Francisco Goya. The artist is fascinated by the notion of the unknown and irrational in the so-called ‘rational’ act of sleeping. For this show, the paintings showcase scenes and states of persisting after sleeplessness. Instead of showing dreamscapes that elude sleeplessness, the paintings depict snippets of day scenes – the void deck of HDBs, hawker centres, the Singapore Riverside and other parts of the city. The depicted site is usually inspired by news articles featuring events such as petty crime, traffic offences and disputes, which could be possible causes of sleeplessness. The gestures and expressionist strokes intrude or recede to suggest the constant struggle between accessing the external, objective reality whilst negotiating the internal, subjective individuality.

Art Plural Gallery is a unique space dedicated to modern, contemporary art and design in the heart of Singapore’s cultural district. Founded by Swiss art dealer Frédéric de Senarclens, this innovative platform nestled in a four-storey Art Deco heritage building presents solo and group exhibitions, installations, public art projects, conferences, and art publications.

Flux – Collective Exhibition 17 January to 28 February 2014

Flux is an important collective exhibition underlining the plural identity of the gallery, bridging East and West and fostering dialogue between cultures, temporalities and artistic expressions and mediums. Flux aims to visit the flow of energy stirring the creative languages of the selected contemporary artists.

The exhibition pays tribute to the creative selection of the gallery featuring works by Fabienne Verdier, Bernar Venet, Ian Davenport, Pablo Reinoso, Chun Kwang Young, Doug and Mike Starn, Nan Qi and Fu Lei.

Art Seasons was founded in September 2001 by Terry Lee, an ardent art fan and collector, with a mission to explore and promote contemporary Chinese and Asian art. Art Seasons has been dedicated to presenting talented Asian artists for more than ten years. Placing strong emphasis on showcasing new and interesting works, Art Seasons has come to be associated with only the best of contemporary Asian Art. With a particular interest in the contemporary visual arts of China, it is one of the first galleries in Singapore to promote contemporary Chinese work.

Solo Exhibition by Zaw Win Pe 16 January to 15 February 2014

Zaw Win Pe is a successful artist from Myanmar who works mainly in oil and/or acrylic that he applies by palette knife onto the canvas. In his abstract depictions, he captures a distinct sense of place and intrinsic identity. Most of Zaw’s landscapes are influenced by his visits to the North Eastern State of Shan. Through his visual commentaries, he presents a unique and intimate opportunity to explore some of the rich complexities of Shan State’s diverse socio-cultural environments. Zaw lays emphasis on the emotive quality of a painting by focusing on colours as an effective agent of expression.

Impressionist Contemporary – An exhibition of 4 modern Singapore Artists 13 January to 31 January 2014

On exhibition will be the works of four of Singapore’s leading contemporary artists: Lim Tze Peng, Goh Beng Kwan, Choy Weng Yang and Terence Teo. Their works represent the best of the various developments of the abstract impressionist style. Windowshop is a cabinet of curiosities like no other. Scoured, bartered, haggled, coaxed, stripped, painted and polished, thousands of objects hand-picked from local junk stores, homes, shops and nostalgia collectors unique to this day and age form a peculiar collection of tailor-made, brass-titled furniture pieces. Each title tells a story of the objects within. By symbolically translating the collector’s control of the world through a miniature, indoor reproduction, Windowshop takes a look at the psychological, cultural and aesthetic value of “things”, and the visual language which the latter forms. The works shed light on the human fascination with keeping things, and begs us to question that which is truly priceless.

Gajah Gallery explores the diverse concerns of contemporary Southeast Asia through art from the region. Established in 1996, Gajah Gallery is dedicated to the promotion of Southeast Asian Contemporary Art with a particular emphasis on the Indonesian Contemporary Art, exclusively representing some of Indonesia’s leading contemporary artists.

Abstraction and Refinement: Chinese Ink Paintings 17 January to 9 February

Gajah Gallery is honored to showcase four of China’s most acclaimed avant-garde ink artists: Gu Gan (b. 1942), Qiu Deshu (b. 1948), Wang Tiande (b. 1960) and Wei Ligang (b. 1964). Displaying the influences of both Western abstraction and the Chinese calligraphic tradition, these four abstract ink pioneers have transformed the visual language of Chinese painting into new gestures of “ink” expressionismtearing, conceptualizing, burning, and extracting. Without dispelling the influence the past, in his own way, each artist strives to strives to break down the barriers of traditional ink painting to evoke a more universal significance.

Galerie Belvedere, established in March 1996, is a Singapore art gallery with an international dimension. The gallery deals mainly in contemporary paintings and sculptures from Europe and Asia. It specialises in providing suitable artworks to corporate buyers and has a comprehensive range of art and services.

Grand Masters of Art Exhibition 13 January to 8 February 2014

Galerie Belvedere Singapore presents an exhibition of museum quality paintings by Asian Masters. The collection features first-generation Singapore artists such as Lee Man Fong, Chen Wen Hsi, Cheong Soo Pieng, and Sun Yee who had exhibited at the Salon des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1953. There are colonial paintings by Richard Walker and W M Clyde of Singapore scenes in 1949–1953. Highlights of the exhibition include paintings by Chinese master Xu Beihong, Indo-European painters AdrienJean Le Mayeur and Antonio Blanco, and Indian artist Sakti Burman, together with 18th Century Indian miniatures.

Singapore native Stephanie Tham founded Galerie Steph in 2007 to showcase both modern and contemporary Asian artists. Since its founding, Galerie Steph has presented numerous exhibitions featuring Pablo Picasso, Joan Miro, Henri Matisse, Marc Chagall, Fernando Botero, Mithu Sen, Nobuyoshi Araki and others.

Stephanie was educated at Christie’s New York and developed professional expertise at a leading New York gallery before returning to establish Galerie Steph.

She also helped organise artist Fernando Botero’s first-ever Singapore exhibition and is an expert on his works.

Galerie Steph will be presenting two solo exhibitions: Currents Flow, Fall, Calm, Curl by Zhang Chun Hong

Her new works in Currents: Flow, Fall, Calm, Curl are inspired by the Pacific Ocean and Chinese Yellow River. Zhang examines the element of water with a series of large charcoal drawings and Chinese fine-style ink paintings that depict ocean waves, river currents and waterfalls from a distance. However, on closer look, each stroke becomes a strand of hair. Zhang combines hair and water to create a beguiling interplay between illusion and reality.

Sweet Surrender comprises abstract paintings made between 2006 and 2013, tracing the evolution of Ray’s experiments with abstract painting. Her abstractions take multiple layers of paint, built up over time, until the surfaces vibrate with colour and impasto. These works can take months, sometimes even years, to arrive at their final state. Through the first studies to more recent works, this selection reveals a trajectory of formal and conceptual concerns that highlight both the playful nature of the experiments, and also their deeper, more philosophical roots.

Curated by Kult, Kampong Beat & Clear Edition & Gallery (Tokyo), this multimedia exhibition gets under the surface of living in modern Asia.

Chinese artist Cai Lei reflects his love for nature in the materials he uses in his artworks and recreates these materials, giving them a new life. The artist’s intent is to provoke emotions and thus reflections on the facts of existence that are often avoided such as the passing of time and its consequences. The exhibition is the artist’s first solo exhibition in Singapore.

A Cultural Medallion recipient and a pioneering figure of sculpture in Singapore, Han Sai Por’s stone sculptures are a recognisable feature in our cityscape. Her collaboration at STPI had led her to explore paper as a sculpting agent, stretching its potential to possess volume and tactility. Nature-inspired forms and forest motifs are given fresh treatment through the use of new techniques like etching, woodblock printing, paper casting and paper pulp molding. These are a continual expression of her ongoing connection with nature in today’s urban landscapes.

Art Seasons Gallery is pleased to host the Myanmar Contemporary Art Talk.

Myanmar master painter, art historian and art critic, U Tin Win will talk about Myanmar contemporary art. The programme will include the understanding and appreciation of Myanmar contemporary art from cultural, geographical, and historical perspectives, collecting and exhibiting Myanmar contemporary art, as well as a gallery tour for the solo exhibition by contemporary artist Zaw Win Pe from Myanmar. Aside from offering a platform for discussions about Myanmar contemporary art, the talk also invites audiences to engage directly with works of art in the gallery.

Expansion by Li Shan. The exhibited works, curated by renowned curator Gao Minglu, has never been seen before by the public. As most of the works in this series were incomplete when they were destroyed during the cultural revolution, Li Shan paints his early works by memory. This is an exhibition anticipated by many collectors.

Galerie Steph & Ikkan Art Gallery FRATERNIZE featuring Tan Peiling Opening Reception: Tuesday, 14 January 2014, 5:00pm

FRATERNIZE is an initiative by ARTSPACE@Helutrans, Galerie Steph and Ikkan Art to provide young Singaporean artists with a platform for experimentation.

Encouraged to intervene into the industrial warehouse space offered by ARTSPACE@Helutrans, the artist is given free reign of a gallery for a site-specific installation. This edition introduces Tan Peiling, an interdisciplinary artist that finds compelling ways to channel our perception and understanding of reality by immersing the audience in a carefully constructed environment. There will be a walkthrough on 18 and 19 January at 2.30pm.

Tan Peiling will be presenting The Blind Witness (2014).

In year 2027, port leasing in Keppel Harbour will be terminated and relocated to Tuas while Keppel Bay will be transformed into a new waterfront city. With the constant relocation and redevelopment of spaces in Singapore, how does that transform our view of place and non-place? How do we reconcile these experiences other than through documenting them as visual archives? In an obsessively visual culture, does the absence of vision affect one’s experience of the event?

The Blind Witness looks at the possibility of representations of events as aural archives. The exhibition space will be transformed into a site for witnessing the relocation of Keppel Harbour through a light and sound installation.

Join us in the exhibition talk led by pioneering figure of sculpture in Singapore, Han Sai Por and STPI Chief Printer Eitaro Ogawa as they take audiences through the material explorations and sources of inspiration in Moving Forest.

STPI Artist Talks, held on the first Saturday of a new exhibition launch, is an avenue for artists to share with audiences ideas behind works produced in collaboration with STPI’s workshops.

Chan Hampe Galleries + Loof Perfect Day by Dawn Ng Perfect Day is an eye-popping light signage installation of the Chinese idiom 风和日丽 (feng he ri li). Perched on top of the Loof rooftop bar at Odeon towers, the sign draws bold theatrical design cues from karaoke (KTV) pub signages that proliferate seedier parts of the city. It sits in bold juxtaposition to the elegant, white-gloved backdrop of Raffles Hotel, and shines in electric defiance against the stormiest monsoon months of the year in Singapore, spanning January to March. As such, Perfect Day is both a wry parody of the manufactured happyclappy wonderlands, which KTVs present, and a rebellious beacon of optimism hoisted into the sky.

Beyond the obvious meaning of the idiom, which literally translates to ‘a breezy and beautiful day’, the four characters is also the first idiom that all ChineseSingaporeans are taught to start any essay with, be it a tale of love, drama, tragedy, adventure or fantasy. In this way, it serves as a Chinese counterpart to the ‘happilyever-after’ expression in Western fairytales. The cocktail of childhood conformity, hope and nostalgia embedded in these four Chinese characters, serve as a secret code, which opens the door of time travel to all who chance up it, drawing them back to a past where all narratives began with a perfect day.

At once happy, bright, naïve and wistful, Perfect Day is meant to bring exactly what it says to the viewer – that precious, some kind of wonderful sight.
