Service. Values. These are just some of the reasons parents choose Baltimore’s independent schools for their children.

Deciding whether to send a child to an independent or public school is one of the most important decisions a parent can make. When weighing the cost benefit of an independent school, parents say they consider the promise of challenging academics, higher expectations, and more opportunities in the arts, athletics, extracurriculars, and leadership.

Just as importantly, according to moms and dads, Baltimore independent schools closely attend to the values and character of their students. Whether inspiring the spirit of giving, kindness, honor, or integrity, Baltimore independent schools look to educate the whole child, students and parents agree, shaping responsible community members who care about the world.

For students, small class sizes make the Baltimore independent school classroom an intellectual home and a place for bonding. According to the Association of Independent Maryland Schools, the average studentfaculty ratio is 8:1. Students feel like they are front and center, and the environment leads to strong ties both with faculty and fellow students.

“My son’s headmaster came to his wedding,” says one father who sent five sons to Baltimore independent schools. “The impact [the headmaster] has had on him has enriched his life. The relationships he formed with both friends and faculty will last forever.”

Even the most nurturing teachers can set the bar high for their students, challenging them to rise to their full potential. High behavioral and academic standards may seem like a lot of pressure to put on young people, but students learn invaluable lessons.

“I wasn’t a great student at [the Baltimore independent school] I attended,” says one recent graduate. “I struggled, but when I went to college, I thrived and made the Dean’s List. I had written a 30-page paper. I was used to lots of reading. I could see that many students had not been prepared like me, and I was grateful my school had pushed me.”

While academic rigor has long been a hallmark of an independent school education, in recent decades, community service has become a distinctive feature of the private school education as well.

“I could see that many students at the university I attended had not been prepared like me, and I was grateful that my school had pushed me.”

“Community service made me realize that going to [an independent school] is about more than just the good grades and the hard work,” says one recent grad. “It’s also about learning to help others.”

One junior at a local independent school adds, “Some of the clubs I participate in are community-service oriented. Through these clubs I am completing service that is not part of my requirement, but I do it in hopes of making the world a better place. A lot of

clubs at my school involve service because it is something that is important to our mission and the student body.”

Baltimore independent schools take the drive toward excellence seriously, but they also know how to kick back, be silly, and let the kids be kids. Goofy traditions, clubs, and extracurricular groups ensure kids unbind from being college bound.

“The spirit at [my school] is one of the many reasons I love my school. Students are always supporting each other whether it is in athletic or academic settings.

The student sections are a huge tradition and they are how we show our support,” says a senior at a local boys school.

“We do this thing called Silent Night during one basketball game per season. Everyone comes in normal attire (not decked out in spirit wear) and is completely quiet until the sixth point of the game. After the sixth point is scored everyone goes crazy cheering, and the rest of the

While cheering for teams acts as a community builder at most schools, it isn’t for everyone. Clubs keep this junior engaged.

Despite strict admission criteria, Baltimore independent schools strive to cultivate the most capable students, capitalizing on efforts toward racial, ethnic, and economic diversity. Schools are meant to emulate the world at large. In recent years, area schools have expanded their global initiatives to include students from every corner of metropolitan Baltimore as well as foreign exchange students from Europe, Asia, and South America.

“Student life at [my school] wouldn’t really exist without clubs,” he says. “Everything we do is put on through different clubs and groups. One group organizes all of the athletic events, music clubs organize assemblies. Ambassador’s Club gets people interested in the school. There are also a lot of diversity-oriented clubs or clubs that are focused on raising awareness about causes. Those are also really important to student life.

“I do clubs because they give me the opportunity to get outside of my grade,” he adds. “Clubs like the art and music clubs are fun because it’s what people are passionate about. The Acoustic Music Club is awesome because everyone has the same motive, playing music, but there’s a really wide range of instruments and musical tastes so everyone brings something

or over 100 years, ROLAND PARK COUNTRY SCHOOL has been dedicated to the intellectual and moral development of its students. A college preparatory school for girls in kindergarten through grade 12, with a coed preschool, RPCS has a current enrollment of 613 students. The school is committed to providing students with An Education Above through a strong, versatile academic program taught by award-winning faculty in a genuinely supportive community.

RPCS strives to prepare its students for life through academic and extracurricular opportunities in the arts, athletics, service, and leadership. The strength of the school’s curriculum can be traced back to 1963, when it became Maryland’s first girls’ school to establish a chapter of the Cum Laude Society.

Technology and STEM research is integrated into the classroom at all ages, with a one-to-one laptop program for Grades 6-12. The STEM Institute at RPCS uses an interdisciplinary approach and problem-based curriculum to provide Upper School students with the tools to pursue interests in and prepare for careers in the STEM disciplines. Students cultivate gardens around their campus and participate in music, art, dance, drama, and lifetime fitness programs throughout the school year. In the Upper School, students have extensive opportunities in the visual and performing arts, including studio art, ceramics, and photography classes, as well as three auditioned performance ensembles. RPCS girls are also athletes, competing in 16 different sports as part of the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland. The school has a state-of-the-art athletic facility featuring two turf fields, an indoor rowing tank, and a fitness center with a year-round strength and conditioning coach.

Finding the Money

Don’t be turned off by the price tag. We explore ways to pay for an independent school education.

o often, sticker shock stops families before they even take a tour of Baltimore-area private schools. As tuition at some schools creeps toward $30,000, it’s no wonder.

At that price, an independent school education would seem only within reach of the area’s wealthiest families.

Fortunately, that’s not the case.

At most area independent schools, between 20 and 30 percent of the student body receives some form of financial aid. The assistance may come in the form of need- or merit-based aid provided by the school, or from independent sources that fund scholarships and grant programs. While there’s no hardand-fast rule on how to obtain aid, families’ best bet is to explore all the possible options available to them.

Experts agree families should start directly with the school to which a student is applying.

School-based financial assistance

Families needn’t be intimidated to inquire about financial aid. In fact, most schools have entire departments devoted to matching prospective students with financial assistance.

“Every AIMS school is eager to make an education at its school available to any student for whom that school would be a good match,” says Peter Baily, executive director of the Association of Independent Maryland Schools, an organization that represents approximately 120 independent schools in Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Need-based aid

One way to increase access to a private school education, of course, is to make tuition affordable to families who can’t otherwise afford it. To meet the goal, a school first determines how much a family can afford to pay.

The process typically involves review by a school-based committee of an online form completed by parents.

The form poses questions about income, assets, and other factors related to personal finances. The schools also evaluate families’ personal income based on tax returns. The number of children a family has in school and other financial-related factors also contribute to a school’s decision regarding a financial assistance award.

“Occasionally, I’ll get that inquiry from people wanting an income level as a guide [to financial aid rewards]. Because of the variations involved, I’m not able to give them a number,” says Steve Birdsall, director of admissions and financial aid at McDonogh School, which provides financial assistance to more than 20 percent of its student body.

Resources for Financial Assistance Baltimore Educational Scholarship Trust (B.E.S.T.)

The Baltimore Educational Scholarship Trust, or B.E.S.T., in partnership with 19 independent member schools, recruits and supports through the admissions process, academically ambitious African-American students with financial need from the Baltimore area. B.E.S.T. works with children in grades five and above whose family incomes are below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. besttrust.org 410-752-2225

Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore Scholarship Programs and Funds

Several scholarship programs and funds exist to support Baltimore-area students interested in attending local Archdiocese and independent Catholic schools. An explanation and links to each of these programs can be found on the Archdiocese of Baltimore website. archbalt.org/schools/affordability

The Children’s Scholarship Fund Baltimore

The Children’s Scholarship Fund Baltimore is a privately-funded organization providing renewable partial tuition scholarships to low-income children in Baltimore City for private and parochial elementary schools (grades K-8). The fund does not restrict scholarships based on type of school.

Scholarship recipients are selected by a random drawing from among qualified applicants; about two percent of applicants are awarded scholarships and all eligible children in selected families receive scholarships, which average between $1,250 and $1,500 per child and are based on family size, family income, and school. csfbaltimore.org 410-243-2510

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation’s Young Scholars Program

The Young Scholars Program provides support during high school to low and moderate-income high school students who demonstrate academic and extracurricular excellence. Students apply to the program during the seventh grade and receive funding for high school. The program provides academic support and mentoring in addition to financial support, which may include support for summer programs, music and art instruction, and computers and software or other learning tools and experiences. Approximately 75 scholars are selected from among more than 1,000 applications each year. More than 90 percent of scholars have an adjusted gross income of less than $60,000. jkcf.org 703-723-8000

Knott Scholarship Funds

The Knott Scholarships offer full tuition, regardless of need, to academically talented elementary and high school students applying to Baltimore Catholic schools.

“Knott Scholarships are based primarily on outstanding academic achievement.

The Samuel Ready Scholarships

Samuel Ready Scholarships provide scholarship funds to six Baltimore-area independent schools: The Bryn Mawr School, Friends School, Garrison Forest School, Institute of Notre Dame, Roland Park Country School, and St. Paul’s School for Girls. The scholarships are awarded to girls who show strong academic promise and who otherwise might be unable to afford tuition. Samuel Ready Scholarships, Inc. does not make individual grant decisions. Interested applicants must apply directly to the supported schools for admission. DOLLARS & SENSE Although some schools may use the same online financial aid forms to determine a family’s level of need, they don’t always reach the same conclusions or offer the same amount of tuition assistance. The bottom line? There’s no single cookie-cutter formula that determines precisely how much, if any, tuition assistance a school will offer.

Merit-based aid

Just as two schools may offer the same family very different aid packages, the availability of merit-based awards can vary significantly between one educational institution and another.

“Merit-based awards are notably less prevalent than financial-based awards…when schools have merit-based awards as part of their programs, they work very carefully to find recipients of those awards who will lead to enhancing the overall quality of community life within the school,” says AIMS’ Baily.

Merit-based awards provide a welcome perk to families who wouldn’t otherwise qualify for financial aid. In some cases, a generous merit-based award offered to a prospective student can serve as the deciding factor when a family is torn between two or more schools.

As Baily notes, merit-based awards are far less prevalent than financial-based assistance; in fact, many area independent schools offer none.

A few schools that do include St. Paul’s School in Brooklandville and The Boys’ Latin School of Maryland in Baltimore.

St. Paul’s boasts a robust merit-based

scholarship program in both its middle and upper schools. New incoming ninth graders can apply to the Kinsolving Scholars Program, which awards $8,000 merit-based scholarships by academic achievement, leadership qualities, character, and service to school and community. Similarly, St. Paul’s awards merit-based scholarships to a small number of middle school applicants as part of the Middleton Scholars program. Recipients of this program are awarded $4,000 per year. Boys’ Latin School offers the Otis Read Scholarship, which awards $7,000 to select new middle school students. Recipients are awarded by “high academic achievement, strong personal integrity, and outstanding involvement in the life of the community,” according to the school’s website.

As with all aspects of the financial assistance process, parents should inquire early in the application process about whether the school they’re considering offers merit-based aid and, if so, how to apply for it.

Outside sources of financial assistance

While a school’s financial aid or admissions department is a great place to start an inquiry about financial assistance, it’s by no means the only source. Several scholarships and financial assistance programs are available to Baltimore-area students according to need and merit. Finding them requires persistence, strong research skills, and patience. Our sidebar, Resources for Financial Assistance, provides information on some of the most generous and reputable local sources of financial assistance outside of individual private schools themselves.

While some scholarship and aid programs aim to give deserving students the support they need to attain a strong education at any independent school, others—such as those affiliated with a specific religious organization—seek to make available to students an education that espouses specific philosophies and values. The Archdiocese of Baltimore offers a prime example. Through individual Catholic schools as well as programs run by or partnering with the Archdiocese, families interested in having their children attend a Catholic school have numerous options for defraying the cost of tuition.

“I always tell families: Check all your options. I would not let the cost be a deterrent to applying to a Catholic school because there are a lot of programs out there to assist families,” says Lauren Robinson, director of marketing for the Archdiocese of Baltimore.

This advice applies to all independent schools in Baltimore. Financial assistance is available to many families in several forms, and it’s typically up to families to initiate the process.

That said, independent schools are becoming increasingly aware of the soft economy’s significant impact on families’ financial circumstances and ability or willingness to pay full tuition. Consequently, they invite families from a range of financial backgrounds to apply for tuition assistance.

“If you never apply, you’ll never know,” McDonogh’s Birdsall wisely reasons. ●

Christopher Post

The Boys’ Latin School Christopher Post became The Boys’ Latin School’s headmaster in 2008, but his work there began 25 years earlier when he interned at BL while pursuing his B.A. in history at Johns Hopkins University. Since then, he has received his Master of Arts from Boston University and, as a career educator, he has taught, coached, advised, and mentored at independent boys’ schools in the Mid-Atlantic.

Headmaster Post’s professional experiences have focused on what is best for boys, providing an environment in which “boys feel at home, safe to pursue their academic curiosities, develop their talents and challenge themselves over and over again.” It all begins with an outstanding faculty, he says, and he commits himself to finding and keeping his “second to none” teachers. “They put in long hours to get to know each boy, help him discover his talents, and strive to help him be his very best.”

The native New Englander and former Capitol Hill staffer steps out of his role as headmaster each week through the fall to lead a series of ninth grade ethics and values seminars that focus on instilling honor and integrity. His teaching role goes hand in hand with what he most values as an educator: developing a young man’s character.

Headmaster Post leads Boys’ Latin to be a place that values each boy as an individual, encourages him to do his best, welcomes him into a strong community of “brothers for life,” and where “good boys grow to be great men.”

Andrew Holmgren Calvert School

Andrew Holmgren, Calvert School’s seventh headmaster, is thankful for each day spent at his school. At his core, he is a teacher. Holmgren serves not only as Calvert’s headmaster but also as a middle school advisor, a Latin teacher, and the coach of the Mighty Bees football team.

These facets of his job highlight Holmgren’s career and the steps that led him to Calvert. He began as a Latin teacher and football, hockey, and baseball coach in Fairfield, Connecticut, where he also served as academic dean and director of admission during his 11-year tenure. From there, he was the middle school head at Collegiate School in Manhattan for five years, before going to Calvert.

At Calvert, Holmgren can put into effect the educational values most important to him — knowing each child as an individual and cultivating a sense of community throughout the school. These principles are derived from Holmgren’s own school experience, and they guide his leadership of Calvert.

“Next to my family, my teachers were the single most important people in my life,” he says.

As an educator, Holmgren sees the unique talents of each of his students but also understands that they are united by common traits: curiosity and kindness. He believes that these qualities help to make a student a good fit for Calvert. With this in mind, Holmgren strives to “create a safe, caring, and academically challenging environment where boys and girls can learn, grow, and enjoy childhood.”

Matt Micciche

Friends School of Baltimore There’s a reason Matt Micciche, head at Friends School of Baltimore since 2005, still finds his work so fulfilling. “The atmosphere of inquiry and respect – and the belief that the right kind of education can make the world a better place — is ingrained in our school’s DNA,” he says.

“Particularly in this time of rapid change, I see in Friends School students the openness, critical thinking, and creativity to make sense of the deluge of information that surrounds us and to use it in meaningful ways for themselves and their communities.”

A graduate of Amherst College, Micciche has master’s degrees from Tufts University and Middlebury College. Helping Friends School to refine and articulate the outcomes it seeks for its students has been a priority throughout his term.

“We are extremely intentional about nurturing in our students the specific skills, knowledge, and habits of mind they’ll need to thrive in and shape the dynamic world in which we live. Truly enduring learning comes from giving students meaningful experiences within and beyond our campus, and helping them see the relevance and power of their education,” he says. When he talks about Friends students, Micciche includes his own in that equation. He and his wife Frances have second, fourth, and seventh graders at Friends. “It’s a joy to have them with me at school,” he says.

“They are a very personal reminder of how crucial it is that my colleagues and I know, love, challenge, and support every child every day.”

Kim Roberts

Garrison Forest School In 2014, Kim Roberts began her inaugural year as Garrison Forest’s tenth head of school. She immediately felt embraced by the community, something she feels is characteristic of her new school and home. As a day and boarding school, Garrison Forest is a 24/7 school community that many of its faculty, including Roberts, call home. As a result, teachers get to know students deeply. Garrison Forest’s day/boarding environment is unique among Baltimore Independent Schools. Roberts’s own independent school education made Garrison Forest a natural fit for her.

“I attended an all-girls day/boarding school... and the experience was the most formative educational experience of my life,” she says.

Roberts went on to earn a B.A. and an M.A. in English Literature from the University of California, Berkeley and Mills College, as well as a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia. Most of her teaching experience occurred at the collegiate level. It was the sense of community, however, that drew her back to independent school life. “At my all-girls school, I felt cared for on a deep level by my teachers. That is exactly what Garrison Forest does. I can’t imagine a better way to dedicate my life.”

At Garrison Forest, she both shares her knowledge and connects with students in a variety of ways, including a new “Shark Tank” student innovation incubator.

“When learning matters for them, then the learning sticks,” she says. For Roberts, this means both traditional learning and building life skills of perseverance and collaboration.

Notre Dame Preparatory School

The Park School of Baltimore

Sister Patricia McCarron, SSND, Ph.D, was appointed Notre Dame Preparatory School’s head in 2005 and it felt as if she had come full circle.

Thirty years before, she began her career there as a math teacher. Subsequently, she received a master’s degree from Loyola University and Ph.D. in educational and administrative policy from Catholic University then worked as a teacher and associate academic dean at Notre Dame of Maryland University.

All of her experiences have been united by a common theme: educating young women to transform the world. This mission defines Notre Dame Prep, which the School Sisters of Notre Dame founded in 1873 for this purpose.

At NDP, girls are educated through service and spirituality. Sister Patricia believes that along with its signature uniform, this idea defines NDP and distinguishes its students.

“There is a spirit about the place…that has endured for nearly 150 years,” she says. “Everyone here embraces the mission and lives it.”

This spirit pervades Notre Dame Prep’s academics, spirituality, and expansive service programs. Showcasing the mission are the girls whose “energy, spirit, care for others, and sense of wonder inspire us daily.”

As the daughter of educators, Sister Patricia comes to her profession naturally.

Having attended a SSND school herself, she understands how education changes lives. She believes that NDP is a school where a student can “be her best, do her very best…and have fun,” sentiments that have spelled success for Notre Dame Prep and that Sister Patricia is poised to carry on.

When Park School hired Dan Paradis to be head of school in 2008, it was his commitment to the school’s fundamental beliefs in equality, diversity, and inclusion that convinced the board he was the right person for the job.

Paradis graduated from Princeton University and earned his master’s degree from Brown. As the product of a top-notch education himself, he recognized and valued Park’s academic rigor paired with its dynamic approach to learning.

The best possible education for students, he believes, relies on good scholarship combined with kindness, moral conviction, and active participation in our democracy. Paradis considers his role as the leader of this progressive agenda to be most important.

Caroline Blatti

Roland Park Country School This summer, Caroline Blatti began her tenure as head of school at Roland Park Country School.

She has been primed for the job since her days as a student at an all-girls preparatory school in New Jersey. Blatti brings teaching, coaching, and leadership experience to her new role. It gives her a unique understanding of girls’ development and what is needed to mold young women into strong, capable leaders.

Blatti received her undergraduate degree from Princeton University and her MA from University College London. She taught high school English for ten years and coached middle and upper school girls in basketball and track and field. Before coming to Baltimore, Blatti served as upper school head of Hutchison School in Memphis, TN. While there, she was also the founding director of Hutchison Leads, a girls’ leadership program she researched, designed, and implemented. She hopes to incorporate these principles into her new role, forging connections between RPCS students and area leaders and professionals.

Blatti believes strongly in all-girls’ education and credits her own teachers with instilling her sense of confidence and self-esteem.

“I understood what it’s like when a teacher opens up a doorway to new ideas and an exciting educational journey begins,” she says.

Blatti looks to build on RPCS’s tradition of academic excellence and its commitment to honor students’ individual journeys, while providing the 21st century skills they need to succeed in the real world.

Dave Faus

St. Paul’s School Few leaders of Baltimore independent schools can boast the independent school credentials of Dave Faus, St. Paul’s School’s head of school, who came to the school in 2013 with 35 years of experience in private school education. With a degree from Kenyon College and graduate study at the University of Pennsylvania, he began his career as a history teacher and coach before his appointment as upper school head and assistant head of school at St. Stephens and St. Agnes School. In 2005, he was named head of Falmouth Academy in Cape Cod where he forged partnerships with local oceanography and marine biology institutions.

He brings his vast leadership experience to St. Paul’s where he has expanded international exchanges, strengthened artistic programs, and expanded the use of technology. These enhancements capture Faus’s belief in educational balance: strong academics countered with opportunities for athletic competition, artistic expression, spiritual growth, and quality time with friends and family.

Underlying his philosophy is the importance of the teacher-coach model. For Faus, lessons taught on the playing field like discipline, responsibility, hard work, and sportsmanship, reinforce what students learn in the classroom.

“As a longtime teacher-coach myself, I understand how valuable that relationship can be, particularly for adolescents,” he says. “When it’s done right, there is no more powerful or mutually beneficial relationship between a student and teacher.

“The relationships that I had as a student with my teachers and coaches transformed my life, and I never wanted to do anything else as a career.”

Penny Evins

St. Paul’s School for Girls Penny Evins, St. Paul’s School for Girls’ head of school, has experienced all levels of school administration. As a former guidance counselor, ethics, and debate teacher, cross-country coach, and lower and middle school division head, Evins understands the nuances of independent schools. At SPSG, she augments her role as head of school by serving as an advisor and assisting with the cross-country program. Evins believes, “All of us who work in schools are teachers, no matter our role.”

The belief underscores the importance of community. For Evins, community stems from partnerships with students and their families.

Through these connections, Evins believes that each student at SPSG is known, valued, and held to her best. Evins credits the school’s environment of love and support and mission of inclusion and compassion for making this possible.

“By combining a total focus on the individual student with total support for our entire community of students, our young women are energized and empowered to explore their boundaries and live beyond them,” she says.

Evins values the reflective, student-led community time that occurs at SPSG each week. It fosters whole-school cohesiveness and a strong bond between all members of the SPSG community.

Mrs. Gazin has been my English teacher, LAUNCH teacher, adviser, and study hall proctor over the past few years, but most importantly she has been a second mother to me. I feel comfortable talking to Mrs. Gazin about everything and anything.

Tell us a little about one of the special traditions distinctive to your school.

One special tradition we have is our Named Scholars Luncheon. Because Boys’ Latin has such a strong alumni group, there are many people in the community who provide financial help to students who may not have been able to attend BL without help.

The luncheon is a time when we can interact and give thanks to those who are giving us this opportunity of a lifetime.

JIMMY, a senior and “lifer” at BL, is the student body vice president and a member of the varsity tennis, squash, and volleyball teams, as well as a member of the National Honor Society and a Williams Scholar. He reflects on the school where he has spent the last 12 years.

What was your favorite class and why?

My favorite class was AP Lit. Mr. Dagenais, my AP Lit teacher, made it his goal to bring us up to an equal level with him while talking about literature. He made us think on our own with extremely difficult works of literature in creative and abstract ways, encouraging any type of “brain blast” that we might have that might help further our understanding of the work.

What two adjectives describe your school?

Adventurous and tight.

How do you show your school spirit?

I try to show my school spirit in every way possible.

What makes your school unique?

The brotherhood at Boys’ Latin is truly unmatched. We are a small high school of 300 guys, yet we consistently show up to sporting events with the biggest and loudest cheering sections. We are extremely supportive of our robotics team and anyone in the BL community who puts themselves out there. For example, after every informal “Performance Wednesday” during lunch in the Student Commons, the whole high school stands and cheers.

What will you miss the most when you graduate?

I will miss everything about Boys’ Latin, but I will definitely miss my classmates, teammates, and faculty the most. I will also miss high school baseball because there is nothing like representing your school and playing along side your best friends.

I am going to miss knowing everyone’s name and face and being so close to everyone, including teachers, at BL.. I guarantee that there is no college that will replicate the sense of this wonderful small community that is Boys’ Latin, where every teacher, whether you have had them or not, knows your name, wishes you good luck before your sporting event or extracurricular activity, and even sometimes sings Happy Birthday to you during lunch.

I believe the community as a whole is what makes BL special. With only 70-80 students per grade, I have developed a connection with not only everyone in my grade, but everyone in the entire upper school. Family is a group of people that would do anything for you, and that is why I consider all the kids at BL my brothers.

The only way to describe the kids at my school would be to call them family. These guys are truly my brothers in every sense.

Mrs. Walters, my gym teacher, has had a big impact on me. She’s also my “coach” every morning before school at Walking and Running Club. I’ve already completed 125 miles this year (see the beads on my shoes!?).

How do you show your school spirit?

We get to dress up in green and gold on Spirit Days and come together with the entire school for cheers, games, and a lot of dancing and singing.

Tell us a little about one of the special traditions distinctive to your school.

Every year, the fifth grade class goes to Echo Hill for a week of camping and awesomeness. I just got back and the food was amazing. I was the first girl to climb 40 feet up and zip line down.

What is your favorite tradition at your school?

I love Bryn Mawr’s annual Bazaar, held every year before Gym Drill! There are tons of games, rides, and it’s fun to see all of my friends.

My English teacher, Ms. Jansen, has had a significant impact on my life.

Ms. Jansen’s infectious enthusiasm has an uplifting effect on our class, leading to lively debates and discussions.

How do you show your school spirit?

On game days, I dress in my gold and white uniform and pull my hair up with a Bryn Mawr bow. My teammates and I gather together, arm-in-arm, and rock back and forth shouting our cheer at game time.

Tell us a little about one of the special traditions distinctive to your school.

Gym Drill is a very special tradition at Bryn Mawr that has been taking place for 112 years. On the first Saturday in May, the middle and upper schools perform dances that have been practiced the entire year. The dances are inspired by cultures all over the world and come to life through costumes and props.

When you leave your school, what will you miss the most?

I will definitely miss my friends the most.

We have so many good times together and they make coming to school in the morning something I look forward to every day.

How would you describe the kids at your school?

Bryn Mawr is this amazing community of smart, ambitious young women. It is a true sisterhood — we are individually different in many ways, but we’re bound by a similar drive and motivation, no matter what we’re pursuing.

Fifth grader KATLYN has attended Calvert School since Sixth Age. She is an artist, a gymnast, and a two-time recipient of the Lower School Girls’ Physical Education Cup. She explains why she loves her school.

Mrs. Thompson, my art teacher. She always has a smile on her face even when she is having a bad day. She is fun to be around and allows us to express who we are in a creative way.

Fun and challenging.

What food are you excited to see on the school cafeteria menu?

Brunch. Sausages and bacon with syrup- YUM!

What is your favorite tradition at your school?

The end of the year assembly. We have a challenge called March Reading Madness when the lower school librarian announces which grade reads the most books. The school awards the Lower School Girls’ Physical Fitness Cup to the girl who can do the most pull-ups, sit-ups and run the fastest. I won it two years in a row!

How would you describe the kids at your school?

Funny. Kind. Supportive. They are there for me. If I am having a bad day, the girls cheer me up and give me a hug!

CHARLIE, a Calvert eighth grader, describes the many

ways his school has cultivated his varied interests in the arts, athletics, and the humanities.

What is your favorite class?

English and history. Both were fun, interesting classes with great teachers.

I read some really good books in English and enjoyed learning about the American Revolution.

How do you show your school spirit?

I wear lots of Calvert clothes outside of school. I play on the squash and tennis teams. I also participate in the middle school musical. This year, I was Donkey in our production of Shrek the Musical, Jr.. I also sing during special assemblies.

What makes your school unique?

Calvert is unique because it ends in eighth grade.

When students are in middle school, we get to be the leaders of the school. It also makes us cherish the time that we have here because we know things change when we leave for high school.

When you leave your school, what will you miss the most?

Definitely my classmates. I have been with many of them for a very long time but some of my closest friends actually came in fifth and sixth grade.

It feels like I have known them much longer.

DELIA, a senior, is a member of the a capella group The Pleiades, a softball player, and the manager of the boys varsity basketball team. She shares what makes Friends School of Baltimore so special to her.

Which teacher has made the biggest impact on your life and how? Which coach?

A teacher who has influenced my life is Ms. Countess. She has been my Latin teacher since freshman year and she has done so much for me. She teaches me more than just Latin, and I’m appreciative of that. Coach Holley, the boys’ varsity basketball coach, has had an impact on my life, too. I manage the team and ever since freshman year, he has shown that he really cares about teaching us life lessons. Much of his advice has changed the way I look at different situations.

What is your favorite class?

I love all of my music classes but my favorite academic class is math.

Vibrant and interesting.

How do you show your school spirit?

I show my school spirit by playing softball, singing with The Pleiades, heading the Black Awareness Club, and just participating in everything that I am able to. If I didn’t love my school and have school spirit, I would not want to share my school with everyone I know!

What makes your school unique?

We are generally very different from other schools in Baltimore, even the other private schools. Our dress code, and routines (Meeting for Worship, Collection, Convocation), are two main things that make Friends School unique.

Also, whenever I talk to people about what they would expect from our school, a lot of times, they describe something like a typical Catholic school. We do honor the Quaker values, but we are very different from a Catholic school.

WILL is a member of the Friends School of Baltimore’s

Class of 2017, a three-sport varsity athlete, and head of Believe in Tomorrow, a student-led organization that benefits children with cancer. As a Friends “lifer,” he reflects on what his school means to him.

Ms.Saudek has had the biggest impact on my life. She has helped me become a better writer and she’s a great mentor to me and to my friends. Coach Cooper took difficult skills and plays and made them easier to understand. He was a great teacher on the field.

What is your favorite class?

I loved my seventh-grade geography class. It was a lot of work, but I learned a lot. In the upper school, my favorite class was Great Civilizations because Mr. Seiler made it exciting to be in class and the material was appealing to me.

By playing in all three sports seasons and being proud of my teams. We went to the playoffs in all three sports this year.

JORDAN, a senior at Gilman School, created Dunks for Diabetes, a fundraiser inspired by a friend and begun as part of his bar mitzvah. After five years, the event has expanded to three locations and raised over $19,000.

PIYUSH, a member of the Gilman School Class of 2020, has been a saxophonist since the third grade as well as a competitive volleyball and tennis player.

Mr. Christian has had a big impact on my life ever since I had him as my ninth grade English teacher. He taught me how to think and ask questions like I had never done before. He also coached me on JV basketball sophomore year, and he continues to have an impact on my Gilman experience.

My fifth grade teacher Mr. Xanders (we call him Mr. X) had a humongous impact on my life as a student and as a person. He taught me to excel in classes and in life and helped me overcome my shyness. My tennis coach Mr. Digges has given me a helping hand and has been available if I needed someone to talk to.

What makes your school unique?

Gilman is unique because it is challenging academically, yet it also encourages well-rounded students with multiple skills. This diverse range of talents and passions helps create a very spirited school community.

Tell us a little about one of the special traditions distinctive to your school.

Silent Night is definitely one of the most distinctive traditions at Gilman. Nearly the entire student body dresses in costume and attends a Friday night varsity basketball game. Until the sixth point is scored by Gilman, everyone in the student section sits down and is absolutely silent, even during warm-ups and introductions. When the sixth point is scored, everyone goes crazy for about five minutes straight, and we continue cheering loudly for the rest of the game. It is also tradition to have a costume contest at halftime and to sing “Silent Night” after the third quarter. It is by far one of the most fun Gilman events each year and the whole student body looks forward to it.

The community and the people.

How do you show your school spirit?

I play in three musical groups and have been in the student council and on the honor committee. I try to help in any way I can, which is what school spirit represents — a helping hand.

At Gilman, there is a brotherhood between the students in your grade and the students in other grades. The Gilman Five: honor, respect, humility, integrity, excellence, our code of ethical conduct, also makes our school special.

Each and every student should be honorable, humble, show integrity, respect everyone, and show excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts.

What is your favorite tradition at your school?

My favorite tradition so far has been Super Gras in the Middle School. We have a chariot race honoring the Latin classes. There is a merit auction, where kids win prizes based on merits they earn for things like making a strong effort in class or being especially helpful. We have a tug-of-war competition between the homerooms and awards are given to students who show spirit and excellence.

I love Ms. Emily and Ms. Patricia. They take care of me and they help me learn.

The teacher that has had the largest impact on my life is Mr. Elliot. He has gotten me increasingly interested in science and his understanding of it can answer most of my questions. When I am wondering about science, I think: “Hmm, I wish Mr. Elliot were here…he would know the answer.”

My favorite subject is chemistry, and researching elements and atoms .

Which teacher has made the biggest impact on your life and how? Which coach?

The teacher who has had the biggest impact on me is Mr. Maggio. In his class, I learned about other religions and gained a deeper understanding of my faith. He also seemed to take a genuine interest in me as a person and a student-athlete. The coach who has had the greatest impact on me is Coach Brant Hall. He is a big reason why I chose to attend Loyola Blakefield. As a coach, he has challenged me to be my best, both on and off the field. He doesn’t just coach football players, he molds young men. He’s been there for me through some of the hardships I have endured, especially when my mom was going through breast cancer.

Close-knit and family.

How do you show your school spirit?

Pep rallies and sporting events are fun ways to demonstrate school spirit. Another way is by participating in events like Operation Welcome Home. It’s awesome to come together as a school to serve others or to thank others for their service for us.

My favorite tradition at Loyola would have to be the Turkey Bowl. I have wanted to play in that since I was in first grade and I have been fortunate enough to participate the last two years. Hopefully, we will win it this year!

The part of Loyola that I will miss the most is all of it – the community, the teachers, my coaches, my friends, and teammates. Loyola is truly like no other.

JULIA, a senior at NDP, is the incoming Student Council President and founder of the Ukuladies, a student group that plays the ukulele as part of its community outreach. As she approaches graduation, she reflects on what her school has meant to her.

Mr. Peri, as any of his students can tell you, is a walking legend. He embraces the individuality and special talents of each girl, and that validation ignites enthusiasm to learn as well as a strong work ethic in his students.

How do you show your school spirit?

You don’t have to create your own school spirit, it is there waiting for you. There’s a spirit about this place.

What is your favorite tradition at your school?

Tree Trim! At Christmastime, we sit in the foyer singing carols and afterward we eat cookies in the cafeteria, Santa pays a visit, and we don tacky sweaters. It’s great to be in a room where everyone is unapologetically happy.

When you leave your school, what will you miss most?

The gifts I have been given at NDP are endless, but the one I will miss the most is the undeniably incredible community.

It is the only place I have known where individuality and togetherness are so intertwined. One person’s accomplishments are victories to us all.

Sixth grader JACOB is excited about middle school and all it has to offer. In the lower school, he participated in the bell choir and was a member of the Roots Squad, an afternoon activities class that meets at McDonogh’s Roots Farm to plant, harvest, and help out in the barn. He is proud to be part of the McDonogh Family.

ALEXANDREA, a freshman, has been at McDonogh since pre-first. During middle school, she participated in leadership and diversity groups, competed in the Math Olympiad and Mathcounts, and saddled up for the riding team. She is looking forward to upper school and shares what makes McDonogh special.

My third-grade teacher, Mrs. Bitz, has had the greatest impact on my life because she is always fun and caring toward everyone. She makes learning incredible.

Science is my favorite class because it is fun, different, and interesting. I really liked the Chesapeake Bay unit. We did a project that taught us how to make clean water from muddy water.

There are many things that make McDonogh unique. The Roots Farm that produces fresh fruit and veggies for the Maryland Food Bank, the swimming pool, the horse barn, the athletic fields, the special events, and all the pride that everyone has make McDonogh a very special place.

Aquapalooza! We slip and slide down the big hill at the beginning of the school year to celebrate our summer reading challenge.

It’s really fun!

My eighth-grade math teacher, Mr. Little, has had a big impact on me. He has not only taught me math, but he has taught me valuable life lessons that will serve me well in the next chapter of my life as an upper schooler. Always with a smile on his face, Mr. Little defines what a teacher should be: an educator and a friend.

Enthusiastic and inclusive.

What makes your school unique?

The vast opportunities. For example, last year I built and programmed a robot to complete certain tasks like throwing a ball and picking up objects.

What is your favorite tradition at your school?

The Holiday Assembly. Every year, the whole school comes together to celebrate before winter break. The lower, middle, and upper school choirs sing, the Middle School Dance Ensemble performs, various bands play, and to tie it all together, teachers and students act out a skit from one of the most popular movies of the year.

How would you describe the kids at your school?

We live by the McDonogh Character Compass, which showcases the words respect, responsibility, honesty, kindness, and service. These words truly define all the kids at the school.

SCHOOL SPIRIT

SYDNEY, a senior at St. Paul’s School for Girls, has been involved in all aspects of school life including serving as three-time class president, an honor board member, admissions ambassador, and varsity soccer player. She explains the importance of her school.

Which teacher has made the biggest impact on your life and how?

My French teacher, Madame Soudry. She has been my teacher since fifth grade and has pushed me to near-fluency in French. Not only is she outstanding in class, but she has also become someone I confide in outside the classroom.

What is your favorite class?

French has always been my favorite class. My French classes have been incredibly enjoyable and filled with challenging coursework. This class has always been my constant throughout middle school and high school and has created in me a drive to continue learning languages. I was given the opportunity to travel to France this past March with my class; it was one of the best experiences of my life.

Which two adjectives best describe your school?

Community-oriented and spirited.

How do you show your school spirit?

I always try to go “all out” in everything I do. Whether I’m dressing up for Green and White competitions during spirit week, playing a sport each season, or being a part of various clubs such as the SGA and Model UN, I strive to be active and enthusiastic in all aspects of my school experience. I have been class president for the past three years and will serve in that role as a senior this year.

When you leave your school, what will you miss most?

Having been at SPSG for eight years and on this campus for 12, it’s hard to choose just one thing I’ll miss. I love every aspect about my school, but I think I’ll miss the community the most. SPSG has always been there to encourage me to do my best, push me outside of my comfort zone, congratulate me on my successes, and support me in my times of need.

NICK, a 2016 St. Paul’s graduate, was captain of the varsity crew and cross country teams. After taking a gap year to study Arabic in Morocco on a U.S. State Department scholarship, he will attend Brown University.

Which teacher has made the biggest impact on your life and how? Which coach?

Mr. Darrell is the definition of what we call a St. Paul’s Gentleman. He shows you how to treat others with respect, to listen to what they say, and to make them feel like they matter. My crew coaches, Mr. Stollenmeyer and Senor Ponce, inspired me by demanding I put forward my maximum effort. I had never rowed a stroke before coming to St. Paul’s and they worked with me to get better every practice over four years.

What makes your school unique?

I think it’s the opportunity it gives every student to try whatever he wants. You don’t have to come in being an expert at something to have a chance to participate. St. Paul’s lets you discover things you want to do, then helps you succeed at them. The best example of that for me was crew, where I went from being a complete novice as a freshman to captain as a senior, with an opportunity to continue rowing in college.

Tell us a little about one of the special traditions distinctive to your school.

On the very first day of school each year, the seniors and the brand new kindergarten students plant a tree together. A little plaque gets placed next to the tree in honor of the kindergartners, and that’s their tree for the next 13 years at St. Paul’s.

I think that’s a neat way to welcome little kids to school and make them feel like part of the community.

What is your favorite tradition at your school?

We have Chapel once a week and the exchange of peace is great. Hundreds of guys are shaking hands, and people walk from one end of the chapel to the other to shake hands with teachers. The chaplain usually cuts it off after a few minutes because it could go on for a half-hour if he didn’t.

When you leave your school, what will you miss most?

I’ll miss the entire community — the feeling that students and teachers here all know me, and care about how I’m doing.

Service learning lessons

Service to the community is as much a part of independent school curriculum as reading, writing, and arithmetic. Learn about the ways local students give.

or many Baltimore independent schools, community outreach is more than just a requirement; it is an essential part of the academic experience. Parochial and progressive schools like Notre Dame Preparatory School and The Park School of Baltimore have always made community service a part of their programs, but now virtually every independent school incorporates community service into its curriculum, encouraging students to discover a passion for serving.

At most independent schools, community service begins

in the lower school. McDonogh School, which has a long history of community service, first graders, for example, read and discuss books about homelessness then create care packages for those in need. After reading The Shoe Shine Girl, third graders set up stands and shine shoes for donations to charitable causes.

Bridget Collins, director of religious studies, character, and service at McDonogh, explains that the school’s “Character Compass” represents its values — including honesty, respect, kindness, and responsibility — but that service is at the center. “It’s not just having kids be a part of giving,” she says, “but rather to teach them to always have the desire to give as part of their DNA.”

Calvert lower and middle school students join forces to help others on Buddy Days.

“We go into all of it with the idea that we have as much to gain as to give.”

At Calvert School, one favorite program is Buddy Days, which happen twice a year and pairs middle and lower school students to work on a service-related project initiated through a partnership between Calvert and outside organizations like Meals on Wheels and Operation Paperback. The program is just one of several community-service programs Calvert offers.

to 40 hours of service and upper schools require 40 to 60 hours. Students fill the requirement with a creative mix of direct service and fundraising. At Roland Park Country School, middle schoolers take on individual projects as well as one for each grade level. One class at Gilman School, for example, initiated a letter-writing campaign to Congress about food insecurity.

“The students are becoming more aware of others outside of themselves and having more empathy and compassion for others, and really … feeling empowered to make a difference,” Pam Ossmus, academic dean at Calvert, says.

“One principle important to the mission of the school since its founding is the idea of building young men of character,” says Donell Thompson, director of community service at Gilman. “Part of that idea includes how students can create a better environment and do work in the community to make things better.”

Teachers guide service learning in the lower school, but once students reach the middle and upper schools, they become more self-directed as they seek to fulfill service requirements.

GIVING side of school, such as counseling at Camp St. Vincent, and volunteering at the Baltimore Humane Society, Paul’s Place, Art with a Heart, and other nonprofits. By upper school, the students have been exposed to many organizations and are expected to follow their interests in service.

“If they have a passion or love, we try to encourage them to share that with others,” Lora Peters, sixth-grade science teacher and community service coordinator at Bryn Mawr, says.

Upper school students take on a range of experiences.

Summer outreach trips give students the opportunity to travel to communities in need and serve hands-on.

Friends School of Baltimore has taken its Habitat for Humanity club to projects in Oregon and Mississippi, and Bryn Mawr School takes students to the Pacific Northwest to work with the Canadian First Nation and to the Dominican Republic to teach young students English.

Summer service trips at St. Paul’s School draw dozens of boys into service. One popular annual trip takes students to Delaware to work with The Way Home, an organization that works with recently released prison inmates trying to get back on their feet.

A unique aspect of community service at St. Paul’s, explains Nate Sell, upper school chaplain, is its service learning council. The council, comprised of upper school representatives from each grade, reviews student service projects, hours, and reflections and approves them for the necessary 60-hour, one-project-per-year requirement.

“We try and have it be more student-led,” Sell says of the process.

Many schools further promote service learning through grants and awards. At Bryn Mawr, the Broadus Award is given annually to two students and their organizations of choice. Garrison Forest School’s Jenkins Fellows Program funds a half dozen summer student community service projects all over the world.

Similarly, Gilman provides the Civic Engagement and Service Learning Grant, which is awarded to two students each year to fund outreach projects. One recipient, Nirakar Pandey, has used his grant to launch Orchcessories.

provides the students with accessories to maintain their instruments as well as the opportunity to participate in master classes on campus with current Gilman musicians.

“They spend maybe two and a half hours on campus just basically doing an orchestral jam session,” Thompson says.

One common goal of the service learning programs at area schools is developing a relationship that extends beyond graduation.

Matt Micciche, head of Friends School, explains that Friends hopes to deepen and sustain relationships with organizations where the school’s students volunteer like Micah House and the McKim Center.

“We go into all of it with the idea that we have as much to gain as to give,” Micciche says. “It’s not a sense that we will come in and make everything better as much as being there, looking for ways to be of service that are guided by the needs and the thinking of the people who are there already rather than coming in with our idea of what should happen and what it should be.”

Ultimately, these and other independent schools strive to show students the value of doing for others. Many of these students far exceed their service requirement for graduation because they find something meaningful in the work they do helping others outside their immediate community.

“The idea is for them to walk across the stage at graduation with this burning desire in their hearts to do the greatest possible amount of good,” Collins says. ●
