PUBLISHER'S LETTER Dear Book Enthusiasts, Every issue we put together feels like a fresh journey, but this one holds a truly special place in our hearts. As we look ahead to the American Library Association (ALA) event, we find ourselves surrounded by storytellers, innovators, and boundary-pushers who remind us exactly why we fell in love with the written word in the first place. When Sara Fanfarillo announced her debut fantasy novel, Everlasting, to now being featured on the cover of Printed Word Reviews says a lot. Having an indie debut get that level of prominent spotlight, especially one focusing on the complex structure and atmospheric world-building of her book, is a huge win for a young author. Everlasting has been picking up serious momentum, taking home multiple accolades including the NYC Big Book Award. In addition, Printed Word Reviews chose Everlasting as a feature editorial review in this month's magazine and eNewsletter. Seeing Fanfarillo’s work recognized like this is an incredible nod to her storytelling, especially for a "coming-of-truth" novel that prioritizes deep, layered mystery over standard fantasy pacing. Definitely a moment worth celebrating! Books are more than just ink on paper or pixels on a screen; they are connections. They bridge the gap between generations, as you will see in our deep dives with the brilliant Sara Fanfarillo. They bridge the gap between theory and raw human emotion, highlighted beautifully by Nancy Regas’s insights into the heart of school counseling. And sometimes, they bridge the gap between silence and a newfound voice, a theme powerfully embodied by Terence Ang's groundbreaking, world-first poetic audiobook. From mastering the high-stakes world of negotiation with Jim Reiman to exploring the very frontiers of human consciousness with Victoria Basil, this issue is a celebration of the sheer scope of independent publishing. We are also incredibly proud to share the visual joy of the NYC Big Book and Independent Press Awards Ceremony, celebrating the creators who keep our industry vibrant and brave. Thank you for being part of this community. We invite you to turn the page, explore these extraordinary voices, and join the conversation. Until next time, keep on reading,

T
he GAB TALKS had the pleasure of chatting with Sara Fanfarillo about her debut novel, Everlasting, a 2025 New York Big Book Award Distinguished Favorite in Fantasy. At just eighteen years old, Sara has already emerged as a captivating new voice in Young Adult fantasy literature. The award-winning author brings a rare blend of emotional depth, imagination, and authenticity to the fantasy world. In this exclusive interview, Sara opens up about the inspiration behind her acclaimed debut novel, her creative process, the themes of identity and belonging woven throughout her story, and the personal journey that transformed a teenage dream into an internationally recognized success.
Our followers are so intrigued by you! You flew in from Italy with your family to join us at 2026 BookCAMP and the Independent Press Awards Gala. Can you give a glimpse into your background? Sara: I grew up in Italy, where I was surrounded by that unmistakable sense of beauty woven into everyday life. I started writing at a young age, long before I fully understood that it could become something meaningful beyond myself. It began with short stories, which gradually evolved as I continued to explore ideas, emotions, and characters over time. Writing has always felt like a very natural part of my life rather than something I consciously set out to pursue. Over the years, it has grown alongside me and become a way for me to reflect and create meaning through storytelling. My family has played a very important role in my journey, always supporting and encouraging my creativity. Being able to travel with them for events like BookCAMP and the NYC Big Book Award/Independent Press Awards Gala feels incredibly full circle and deeply meaningful to me.

You began writing at the age of 17, published your debut novel, Everlasting by 18. It has earned several awards including a Distinguished Favorite in the 2025 New York City Big Book Award. What first inspired you to write Everlasting?
Your storyline is layered. You have referred to it as a journey of discovery, often deeply personal. What makes the story and the world of Everlasting unique compared to other YA Fantasy novels? Sara: I think what makes Everlasting truly stand out is how closely fantasy is tied to emotional truth. The world isn’t designed just for spectacle, but it reflects the characters’ fears, desires, and inner struggles, so the setting becomes an extension of their emotional journeys. I wanted the story to feel immersive but also intimate, where the stakes are not only external but deeply personal. At its core, it’s about identity, about who you become when everything familiar starts to collapse. The emotional tension was a crucial factor to me, because I wanted readers to feel connected to the characters on a human level, not just follow the plot, but truly feel what they’re going through. What drew you specifically to the Young Adult fantasy genre? Sara: YA fantasy has this incredible freedom. You can explore huge themes, such as identity, grief, destiny, and power through imaginative worlds that make those emotions feel heightened and unforgettable. Teen years are such an intense period of transformation, and fantasy mirrors that perfectly. I also love how Young Adult readers connect so passionately with stories and characters. They don’t just read books, they live inside them! You have said that writing is like “Following a trail where you can see part of the path but not all of it.” How does this relate to your writing process? Sara: That quote describes my process perfectly because I rarely know everything from the beginning. I usually start www.IndependentPressAward.com
Did you draw inspiration from your own experiences and encounters? Sara: Absolutely. Not in a literal sense, but emotionally, yes. I think every writer leaves traces of themselves in their work. Experiences, conversations, hopes, and even small moments that might seem insignificant at the time can all shape a story in unexpected ways. A lot of Kendall’s emotional journey came from questions I was asking myself. Those feelings didn’t translate into the story as direct events from my life, but more as emotional echoes that influenced how I understood the characters and their choices. I didn’t set out to mirror my own experiences, but I do think the honesty of those emotions naturally found their way into the writing. Were there specific themes that were most important for you to explore in Everlasting? Sara: Identity was probably the biggest theme I wanted to explore in this book. I was really interested in what happens when someone starts to feel disconnected, like they’re moving through life without a clear sense of who they are anymore. Alongside that, I also focused a lot on belonging. That need to find a place where you feel seen and understood came up again and again in the story. For me, it’s closely tied to the idea that growth doesn’t always look gentle or comfortable; sometimes it comes through painful transformation, where you lose parts of yourself before rebuilding the most honest version of who you are.
The Gab Talks with Sara Fanfarillo
Sara: I always dreamed of writing a book, but I knew I needed an idea that would truly stay with me. The inspiration for Everlasting came during a time when I was reflecting on what it means for something to be “lasting”. That word stuck with me, and I began exploring it through fiction. As I wrote, the idea naturally expanded into a larger story with its own world and characters. I quickly realized it had more depth than I originally expected, so I continued developing it over time. After more than a year of writing and revising, Everlasting was published. What began as a simple reflection eventually grew into my debut novel.
with emotions, fragments of scenes, or certain character dynamics. Then I follow instinct. Some parts are carefully planned, but other parts reveal themselves while I’m writing. It’s almost like discovering the story at the same time as the characters. Sometimes the most meaningful moments are the ones I never expected to write.
The main protagonist is Kendall. As you developed his character, did you have a clear vision of who he was from the start or did he evolve? Sara: Kendall evolved constantly. I knew his emotional core very early on, but the more I wrote about him, the more complex he became. He surprised me a lot! Some of his choices, fears, and strengths only appeared once I placed him in difficult situations. That’s one of my favorite parts of writing characters, you can let them become real enough to challenge your original plans. Should readers look for hidden details or easter eggs in the book? Sara: Definitely. I love planting subtle details and symbolic references, as well as small moments that gain new meaning later in the story. Some clues are emotional

rather than “plot-related”. I wanted rereads to feel rewarding because there are connections that readers might only notice the second time around.
silence, to contradictions. It’s made me more empathetic and more introspective. I’ve also learned that creativity often comes from vulnerability. The moments we try hardest to hide are sometimes the ones that connect most deeply with others.
Are there particular authors, myths, or fantasy worlds that influenced your writing?
What was the biggest challenge you faced while writing your debut novel?
Sara: I’ve always loved fantasy that doesn’t rely only on imagination, but also carries emotional depth. Mythology in general has inspired me a lot because myths often feel timeless and symbolic. I’m also inspired by stories that create immersive worlds while still keeping the characters emotionally grounded. More than specific influences, I think I’m drawn to works that leave you feeling changed after experiencing them.
Sara: Writing a debut novel at a young age can feel overwhelming because there’s always doubt. I constantly questioned whether I was capable of creating something meaningful and whether the story would actually connect with readers. On top of that, I was still learning the basics of structure, pacing, and discipline while trying to finish a full-length work. One of the biggest challenges was pushing through those moments of uncertainty when everything felt like it wasn’t good enough or would never come together. Learning to keep writing anyway was probably the hardest part, but also the most important. It taught me that progress often comes from persistence rather than certainty. How did it feel the first time you held the finished book in your hands?
When readers turn the last page, what emotions should linger and what questions should stay with them? Sara: I hope readers finish the book feeling emotionally moved and reflective, carrying both hope and unease with them. I want there to be a lingering sense that the story isn’t really over inside them, but continues to unfold in their thoughts and feelings long after the final page. More than anything, I’d love for it to leave them with a little more courage to let life happen as it is, without always trying to control or shape every outcome, and to find meaning in that openness.
Sara: Surreal. There’s really no other word for it. Seeing something that once existed only in my mind become a physical book was emotional in a way I wasn’t expecting. It felt like proof that imagination can become real if you keep working at it hard enough.
Why do you think fantasy stories resonate so strongly with teen readers today?
You’re such an inspiration to young authors! What advice can you offer aspiring young writers who dream of
Sara: Fantasy gives shape to emotions that are otherwise difficult to explain. Teen readers are navigating identity, pressure, loneliness, expectations, and change. Fantasy externalizes those struggles in powerful ways. Entire worlds can reflect emotional realities. It allows readers to feel seen while also escaping for a little while.
publishing their first book? Sara: Don’t wait for permission to start creating. Your age does not determine the value of your voice. Read constantly, write consistently, and allow yourself to be imperfect while learning. Also, don’t compare your timeline to anyone else’s. Every writer develops differently. The most important thing is to stay honest in your storytelling and keep going even when self-doubt appears.
What has writing taught you about yourself and the way you view the world? Sara: Writing taught me to pay attention, to emotions, to people, to www.IndependentPressAward.com

If Everlasting were adapted into a film or TV series, who would play Kendall? Sara: That’s such a tough question because Kendall feels very personal to me, and I’d want the portrayal to stay true to his emotional depth. More than anything, I’d look for someone who can capture both his vulnerability and his intensity, someone who can say just as much through silence, expression, and subtle movement as through dialogue. Someone with an ability to portray quiet, internal conflict. Authenticity would matter more to me than any specific name. I’d want whoever plays Kendall to fully understand who he is on an emotional level and bring that to life in a believable way. What is one thing readers would be surprised to learn about you? Sara: One thing that might surprise readers is how ordinary my writing environment actually is. People often imagine a very romantic or perfectly curated setup, but most of the time I write in very simple, everyday spaces, with a lot of notes around me. It’s less about inspiration striking in a dramatic moment and more about learning to stay open to it whenever it arrives. Most surprisingly, I often don’t feel like I have everything figured out while I’m writing. I’m usually discovering the story in real time, alongside the characters, which means a lot of uncertainty is ptart of the process rather than something I’ve fully resolved before I begin. Some of my best story ideas come at the worst possible times, like late at night or in the middle of doing completely ordinary things, when I’m not actively trying to think about writing at all. I’ve learned to keep notes everywhere because if I don’t write them down immediately, I’ll lose that spark and never quite get it back the same way! Can readers expect a sequel or more stories set in this world? Sara: Yes! There’s definitely more to explore. The world of Everlasting still has many secrets, unresolved threads, and stories waiting to be told. I’m very excited about where things could go next… As our conversation with Sara came to an end, one thing became unmistakably clear, her storytelling is driven not only by imagination, but by emotional honesty and quiet introspection. With Everlasting, she has crafted more than a fantasy novel; she has created a deeply personal exploration of identity, transformation, and belonging that continues to resonate with readers around the world. As readers eagerly await what comes next in the world of Everlasting, one thing is certain, Sarah is only at the beginning of a remarkable literary journey, and her voice is destined to leave a lasting mark on the fantasy genre for years to come.

Everlasting by Sara Fanfarillo Fantasy. • ISBN: 978-1035872183 A sheltered boy raised in isolation by a secretive father must follow a mysterious key and map through deadly, time-bending worlds to uncover his true bloodline and stop a hidden force threatening both his family and reality. The debut novel from Sara Fanfarillo, “Everlasting,” is an atmospheric foray into the “puzzle-box” subgenre of Young Adult fantasy. It is a story that prioritizes the internal architecture of its world, moving through layers of time, memory, and physical thresholds over the traditional high-action beats of modern YA. For readers who enjoy speculative fiction that demands careful attention and rewards the reconstruction of a fractured history, Fanfarillo offers a haunting, high-concept quest. The novel begins with a classic Gothic trope: the isolated protagonist kept in a “gilded cage” under the guise of protection. Kendall, raised in seclusion by his father, Mr. Rosenvelt, is a character defined by his lack of context. When his father vanishes, the story effectively transforms into a sensory-heavy odyssey. Fanfarillo excels at creating a sense of claustrophobia and displacement. As Kendall moves from the “invisible messages” in his mother’s paintings to a submerged door beneath a lake, the reader feels his disorientation. The use of “locked thresholds” and “memory loss” serves as a clever narrative device, mirroring Kendall’s own psychological journey as he transitions from a sheltered child to a proactive seeker of truth. At the heart of the book is a complex system of magical engineering involving lunar cycles and literal keys. The worldbuilding is notably non-linear. Rather than a standard hero’s journey, the plot operates like an unfolding tapestry beginning with layered timelines. For example, the intersection of Kendall, his father, and the mysterious “Master” across different eras elevates the story from a simple rescue mission to a temporal mystery. Next, the revelation that Kendall’s family was involved in a failed attempt to cure a supernatural disease adds a layer of moral ambiguity. The tragedy isn't just a monster to be defeated, but a generational mistake that must be reconciled. Lastly, the introduction of Lock, the weary map-maker, provides a necessary anchor for the narrative, grounding the more abstract “moon-driven crossings” in a human struggle for survival and navigation. The conflict with the Kronelfield line provides the necessary external pressure for the Rosenvelt family drama. By tying the disaster on “human soil” to the manipulation of this rival bloodline, Fanfarillo raises the stakes from a private family matter to a global catastrophe. Kendall’s realization that he was a “design” rather than just a son is a poignant turning point that successfully transitions the character into his final, more mature form. The book's greatest strength—its complexity—may also be its highest hurdle for some. The “fragmented memory” and “shifting eras” require a reader who is comfortable with ambiguity. The middle act, involving ice tunnels and visions, leans heavily into surrealism. Readers who prefer fast-paced, combat-oriented fantasy might find the slowburn philosophical exploration of the “temporal fractures” challenging. Fanfarillo’s prose is highly descriptive, focusing on the feel of the environments, for example, the desert heat, the cold of the tunnels, and the ethereal pull of the moon. “Everlasting” is an ambitious debut that signals a promising new young voice in speculative fiction. It is less a “coming-of-age” story and more a “comingof-truth” story. By the time Kendall reaches the central passages where his bloodline and the temporal fractures converge, the payoff is a satisfying sense of structural wholeness. “Everlasting” is ideal for fans of: “The Starless Sea" by Erin Morgenstern, the intricate puzzles of Dark (Netflix), and classic portal fantasies that explore the heavy cost of magic.

World-First: Singaporean Author Terence Ang, a Stroke Survivor with Aphasia, Clones Voice for Poetic Audiobook
In a historic convergence of assistive technology and creative resilience, Singaporean author Terence Ang has become the first stroke survivor with aphasia to reclaim his voice through an artificial intelligence (AI) audiobook.
"Writing gave me a voice when words felt out of reach, but this audiobook allows me to truly be heard again," says Terence Ang. "To hear my own voice delivering these poems of resilience and survival is profoundly emotional. It is proof that technology, when guided by the human heart, can heal and bridge the gaps left by trauma. Bringing this project and Thunderstroke to the global stage at the ALA is a dream I never thought possible when I was in the hospital bed."
Ang suffered a life-altering stroke in 2020 that left him with aphasia, a condition that severely impairs a person's ability to speak and write. Despite these immense communication barriers, Ang continued to express his journey through writing and art. Now, he has taken a groundbreaking step forward with the release of his new poetry audiobook, Brokenness Becomes Beautiful.
The launch of Brokenness Becomes Beautiful arrives amid significant global recognition for Ang’s work. His recent companion book, Thunderstroke: A Poetry Memoir Inspired by a True Story, which blends raw poetry with vivid illustrations of stroke recovery, was recently named a "TOP Pick" by Printed Word Reviews and to be featured prominently at this year’s American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference.
Using cutting-edge voice-cloning technology from ElevenLabs, Ang successfully generated a digital replica of his original voice. The resulting audiobook allows his cloned voice to directly narrate his own deeply personal poems of survival, vulnerability, and healing. The achievement marks a profound shift in the narrative surrounding AI, moving the conversation away from automation and toward the preservation of human identity and dignity.
Ang’s milestone offers a powerful beacon of hope for the millions of stroke survivors and individuals living with speech impairments worldwide, proving that technology can restore what was thought to be lost. Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/21oplbL4B6rwlzinhYijCa
