PUBLISHER'S LETTER Hello Readers, The holiday season is a favorite time of year for my family. It means time together, a respite from the usual hustle and bustle of work and school, and a chance to truly reconnect and recharge. We have a treasure trove of beloved traditions; and for us, it’s Thanksgiving to Christmas Eve as the highpoints of the season. The Thanksgiving feast means eating all day with family, while friends drop in to visit. Then, the hunt for the perfect Christmas tree and trimmings, to the chaotic but fun cookiebaking marathon. The house is always filled with the comforting scents of pine, cinnamon, and hot cocoa. All this downtime has led me to discover great reads I don't usually allow myself to indulge in, and that got me thinking. With so many standouts from the award programs, I was wondering what these award-winning authors would recommend to me as a holiday gift, so I asked. The result was this month’s article “The Ultimate Gift: Award-Winning Authors Share Their Holiday Book Picks.” I received dozens of submissions on what book they would gift and why, and I’m sharing those with you in this issue of Printed Word Reviews’ Holiday Gift Guide. I’ve included this year’s NYC Big Book Award winners and distinguished favorites to help you with your shopping list, as there is a book for anyone and everyone who you need a gift for. Although 15 major categories, we’ve broken it down to very specific kinds of reads, guaranteeing the perfect reading match for those you are gifting. As I mentioned in my last letter, the NYC Big Book Award continues to attract high-quality books from all over the world. Our 2025 winners include "What is My Legacy?" by Martin Luther King III, Arndrea Waters King, Marc Kielburger, and Craig Kielburger, as well as "Modernist Bread at Home" by Nathan Myhrvold, all very appropriate gifts this year. The call for the Independent Press Award entries is fast approaching. If you're an author or publisher looking to gain recognition, visit www.independentpressaward.com for more details. Lastly, BookCAMP 2026 on April 24-26 promises to be bigger than ever. We’ll be celebrating the NYC Big Book and the Independent Press Award recipients, as well as connecting with publishing experts. Reserve today at www.ipabookcamp.com/tickets. Until next time, keep on reading,

Reservations: A Samantha Wright Crime Series by Theresa Janson

Crime fiction, Thriller, Contemporary Romance ISBN: 979-8998812705 “Theresa Janson’s thriller “Reservations” weaves together elements of crime, suspense, and romance, making it ideal for readers who appreciate complex plots and resilient female protagonists. The novel centers on FBI profiler Samantha Wright, who is driven by a personal mission to capture a serial killer who previously eluded her late mentor.

was twistedly obsessed with her.

The story is set against the cold, stark landscape of Indian reservations, primarily Ashland, Montana, during a harsh winter. Sam is not only hunting a killer who targets young boys on the reservation but is also battling her past. Nightmares haunt her, sprouting from a prior case where she was attacked and captured by a killer who

Arriving in Ashland, Sam’s determination to solve the current case is unyielding, despite the complex jurisdictional dynamics between the FBI, Tribal Police, and local law enforcement. She takes residence at The Lodge, owned by Will Little Bear, a Cheyenne guide and tracker. Will quickly becomes an essential, though unexpected, ally. As Sam and Will delve into the chilling evidence—the tortured, mutilated bodies of the victims—they uncover disturbing patterns. The killer’s profile suggests someone with an intimate knowledge of the reservations. Sam’s innovative theories, including the use of peyote, intensify the hunt.

The aftermath focuses on Sam’s gradual recovery and Will’s unwavering support. Their deepening bond is cemented by a poignant moment when Sam is honored with an induction into the Cheyenne Tribe, receiving the name “She who stands with the warriors.” The strength they find in each other is tested when a threatening note and a lock of her own hair arrive, suggesting the killer or an accomplice may still be at large.

“Reservations” concludes with an affirmation of healing and enduring love. Will’s promise to marry Sam despite the ongoing threats highlights their unwavering resilience. The narrative is more than a crime story; it is a profound exploration of human endurance and the transformative power of connection.

ULTIMATE Gift

My favorite holiday novel is “The Legend of Holly Claus” by Brittney Ryan. Not only are the story, characters, and illustrations beautifully nostalgic in the vein of classic Christmas tales like “The Nutcracker” and “The Tailor of Gloucester,” but in 2005, Ryan invited young readers to write letters to “Holly Claus, The Royal Palace, The City of Forever, The Land of the Immortals,” and then wrote back as Holly, the daughter of Santa Claus, herself, adding an element of joyful interactivity.

THE

ULTIMATE Gift The book I would recommend that deeply moved me is An Unfinished Love Story, by Doris Kearns Goodwin. I am always captivated when I hear her speak, but to get a personal glimpse of the powerhouse couple that she and her husband Dick were was incredible. Not to mention, you felt as if you were present during the 1960s and 1970s. Also, you listen to great speeches, but never think about where they came from. The role of a speech writer is so intense, and some of the greatest, most lasting speeches were written by Richard Goodwin. Especially, with our nation in such turmoil and the misrepresentation of history, this is a mustread chronicle of their lives, their love story, their brilliance, and mutual respect for one another, as well as the Kennedy & Johnson administrations. With historical backdrops and fantasy, “Labyrinth of Shadows: The Witch’s Rebirth Part I” is a spellbinding journey into a world where ancient magic collides with the rise of Christianity. Set in the early fifth century, the story brings together the historical events of the Merovingian dynasty’s rise with mythology and supernatural powers. The book kicks off with the Hun invasion, forcing the Sicambrian Franks, led by Merovech, to migrate. This turmoil sets the stage for a young witch’s arrival, a figure whose ancient powers are said to challenge even the most powerful magical bloodlines. At the heart of the story are several fascinating characters: Merovech, the Frankish leader; the Witch, who holds a destiny-altering secret; and Clovis, a young boy destined for either greatness or destruction. As the story progresses, we are introduced to Merona, a baby whose birth signals an impending change. We follow her journey as she grows, hones her powers, and, with the guidance of Murdach and the Morrigan, prepares to face her greatest challenge.

Welcome to the NIC Zoo

Colorscapes

by Paige Pedroli

by Lee Woodman

Childrens Board Books. Independently Published. ISBN: 979-8218307080

Poetry. Shanti Arts Publishing. ISBN: 978-1962082860

In a heartwarming journey through the NIC-Zoo, a collection of animal babies learns that every unique life is worth the wait as they grow stronger and prepare to soar into their new beginnings.

“Colorscapes,” is the sixth volume in Lee Woodman’s celebrated “Scapes” series, and it presents a profound, vibrant meditation on the world of color. Far from being a simple catalogue of hues, this collection of poetry transforms color from a mere visual phenomenon into a deep exploration of human emotion, history, and cultural narrative.

“Welcome to the NICU-Zoo” is a tender and necessary children’s board book by Paige Pedroli, inspired by her own family’s experience as a two-time NICU mom. This heartwarming story re-imagines the often intimidating environment of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit as a cozy, temporary haven for animal babies, the “NIC-Zoo,” providing a message of hope and understanding for both children and their parents.

Woodman, a poet with a background rooted in an international childhood and a career at prestigious institutions like the Smithsonian and the Library of Congress, brings a rich, interdisciplinary perspective to her work. The book begins with a preface that beautifully traces her lifelong fascination with colors, influenced by the intense palette of her childhood in India and her later studies in art history. This scholarly yet intimate foundation sets the stage for a collection that is both highly accessible and deeply nuanced.

The story centers on various baby animals who hatch or are born early and require specialized care. Instead of a sterile hospital, they are admitted to the brightly envisioned NIC-Zoo, colorfully illustrated by Elena Hernandez, a nurturing place where dedicated caring nurses help them grow strong. The rhyming narrative follows the gradual progression of time, patiently detailing how each unique baby receives individualized care. The book beautifully addresses the need for patience during recovery, a reality many NICU families face.

The core thesis of “Colorscapes” is that colors are inextricably intertwined with our emotions, histories, and cultural narratives. Woodman supports this idea by devoting each poem to a specific color or nature theme, offering diverse and unique perspectives…

The tone is consistently gentle and suitable for bedtime reading, making complex emotions accessible. The book is ideally suited for a child reader demographic of ages 4–8, though its primary audience extends beyond that to include NICU siblings and the parents reading to their babies. For an older sibling, the NIC-Zoo framework provides a concrete, non-scary metaphor for the hospital, helping them understand why their new brother or sister can’t

What truly sets “Colorscapes” apart is its masterful unique blend of poetic expression and scholarly insight. Woodman doesn’t just describe colors; she investigates them. She draws upon historical references, scientific facts, and vivid personal anecdotes, giving the reader a comprehensive understanding of each color’s symbolic weight. The popular style ensures the work is not intimidating, making it easy for a broad audience to connect with the material without sacrificing intellectual depth.

come home yet. The narrative progression is reassuring and cyclical. The climax arrives not in drama, but in joyful readiness: when the babies are finally healthy, they fly or hop off to their own home, carrying the NIC-Zoo as a cherished memory of the care they received. Key illustrated scenes, such as the initial early arrival and the final departure, will undoubtedly resonate deeply with families who have lived this journey.

“Colorscapes” is an essential read for poetry enthusiasts, art historians, and anyone with a sincere interest in the cultural and emotional dimensions of colors. Readers will benefit from gaining both a deeper, more profound appreciation for the vivid hues that surround them and a greater understanding of how these colors subtly influence our perceptions and feelings every day.

“Welcome to the NICU-Zoo” is more than just a sweet story; it is a therapeutic resource wrapped in a comforting tale. By transforming a challenging

This collection, along with the “Scapes” in the series, is highly recommended for those who seek to enrich their knowledge of art and color theory through the moving, metaphorical lens of poetry. It’s a book that reminds us to look— really look—at the chromatic landscape of our lives.

medical setting into an imaginative, safe space, Paige Pedroli validates the feelings of parents while providing a hopeful narrative for children. This book is a valuable addition to any family’s library, particularly those seeking comfort and understanding during or after a NICU stay.
