F

rom my very first meeting with Rob Price, Owner and CEO of Gatekeeper Press, I knew I was in the right place. The conversation felt familiar. More importantly, I felt seen. Rob understood my vision and trusted me to help guide Gatekeeper Press into its next phase of growth. At the time I joined, Gatekeeper Press was entering its tenth year. What struck me immediately was that despite nearly a decade of success, the company had never aggressively promoted its status, values, or offerings. That alone spoke volumes. Much of Gatekeeper Press’ growth came from word of mouth, author referrals, and genuine reviews. My role as Director of Marketing and Business

Development was not to reinvent anything, but to thoughtfully amplify something that was already working with integrity. My first year was intentionally quiet. I spent that time learning the culture and listening closely to our author family. I sat in on countless intake calls with both new and returning authors, each arriving with a story and a dream for their next book. What surprised me most was how personal the experience remained at every level. Every author had direct communication with the owners, Rob Price and Tony Chellini. In today’s automated world, that kind of access is rare. It is also a true reflection of what “Where Authors Are Family” means in practice, not just in words. What concerned me, however, was the broader publishing landscape. The industry has grown increasingly predatory. Many authors came to us guarded, fearful, and uncertain. Some had been misled by vanity presses. Others had been outright scammed. Many arrived after paying less for promises that resulted in lower quality work than expected. These conversations were often heavy, and they reinforced an important truth: authors are

not looking to be convinced. They are looking to be protected and informed. That realization shaped my mission. Education, not persuasion, became my focus. Authors deserve clarity around rights, royalties, and control before they commit to any publishing path. At Gatekeeper Press, those concerns are addressed directly and transparently through our Author Bill of Rights. Authors retain 100 percent of their rights and royalties, supported by global distribution through the industry’s largest networks. This is not vanity publishing. It is independent publishing done with the same level of quality as traditional houses, without sacrificing sovereignty. The name Gatekeeper Press was chosen deliberately, not to control entry, but to stand in direct opposition to the gatekeeping that once defined the industry. When Gatekeeper Press was founded, this model did not exist. It was created as an alternative to systems that limited voices, restricted rights, and prioritized control over creativity. That mission has remained unchanged. What authors receive is not just a service, but a partnership. A dedicated publishing team. A personal author manager. Direct access to designers, illustrators, formatters, and marketing professionals based on the services they choose. Every project is tailored to the author’s vision, ensuring both creative fulfillment and market readiness. As I listened to our community, it became clear that publishing alone was not enough. Marketing is deeply personal for indie authors and often overwhelming. We built marketing services with

intention, offering tangible assets that support authors throughout the lifespan of their journey. Promotional book trailers, bestseller campaigns, and custom author websites that allow direct book sales with automated print on demand fulfillment were created to empower authors further. These are not fleeting promises. They are lasting tools. Gatekeeper Press does not take a percentage of author royalties. The goal has always been sustainability, not dependency. After witnessing Gatekeeper Press’ structure and commitment from the inside, one belief has become unwavering. Indie authors deserve protection, empowerment, and respect for their sovereignty and voice. They do not need gatekeepers. They need partners. While do it yourself platforms exist, Gatekeeper Press serves authors who seek white glove, concierge level support without compromising quality or control. Many indie authors still dream of being “signed” by a traditional publisher. Increasingly, the narrative is changing. Authors are choosing themselves first. With the right partner, they can publish independently, retain full ownership, and still attract traditional opportunities later if they choose. Ownership keeps every door open. I am not here to change Gatekeeper Press. I am here to amplify a culture that has always existed. One rooted in integrity, trust, and respect for authorship. I am proud to be part of this publishing family, and deeply grateful to wake each day energized by purpose rather than obligation. The future of publishing belongs to authors who choose sovereignty over surrender. Independent by design is not a trend. It is a declaration.

Luis Javier Reyna Mijangos is the Director of Marketing & Business Development at Gatekeeper Press and founder of The 852hz Effect. He helps people and businesses align with their authentic selves, projecting truth outward to attract growth, resonance, and opportunities. Alignment and truth are everything.

We welcome back old and new speakers and experts for BookCAMP 2026. This year, we are providing three separate tracks: Writing/Craft; Marketing & Publicity; and Business. Attendees will have options to attend sessions from all three or just the ones they find most interesting. All sessions will remain under an hour, with additional time set aside for attendees to meet those experts. Optional time on Sunday is provided for those wanting a more in depth consultation. Here are number of the speakers and experts that plan on attending BookCAMP 2026:

Eddie Gamarra Film Producer - The Maze Runner

Garmarra’s background is vast. Early in his teens, his love with Hitchcock and Freud led to his being a Psych major and a Film minor at Vassar College. While getting his MA in Cinema Studies from NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts at night, Garmarra worked at Nickelodeon Home Video and then Viacom’s Legal team by day. Early on, Garmarra learned the value not just of scholarly analysis and critical thinking, but also of the business sides of show business. His passion for film and psychoanalysis took him to Emory University’s Graduate Institute of the Liberal Arts where he co-founded the Psychoanalytic Studies Program. Garmarra then went to work at the book packager Alloy Entertainment (GOSSIP GIRL) as they were launching their West Coast office. With the goal of staying within the intersections of film, TV and publishing, Garmarra moved to The Gotham Group, a literary management and production company, where he worked with some of the world’s best storytellers. Garmarra represented screenwriters, directors, and animators working across live action and animated film & TV. He was blessed to rep a list of Oscar, Emmy, Caldecott, and Newbery winners. As the Co-Head of the Book Dept, Garmarra represented publishers ranging from Big 5 to boutique houses. Garmarra also repped numerous book agencies, authors and illustrators selling projects to publishing and to film/TV studios. Although his main focus was in the Kids & Family space, Garmarra had success with more “grown up” fare as well with shows like SLOW HORSES on Apple+, cult movies like COHERENCE, and animated hits like Peter Brown’s THE WILD ROBOT at DreamWorks Animation. As the Executive Producer for The Maze Runner trilogy at 20th Century Fox, Garmarra helped transform a best-selling series into a global blockbuster franchise earning almost $1B worldwide box office. He also served as an EP on Jerry Spinelli’s iconic YA love story STARGIRL for Disney + as well as Netflix’s WENDELL & WILD, the stop motion horror comedy produced by Jordan Peele & directed by Henry Selick. Garmarra is thrilled to have his “own shingle” dedicated to helping storytellers create and sell the stories they want to tell.

The Five

Major Forces Reshaping the Modern Publishing World

The publishing world today stands at a dynamic crossroads, constantly being reshaped by a complex interplay of technological advancements, evolving consumer behaviors, and persistent economic shifts. These forces are not just changing how books are produced, but also how they are discovered, consumed, and valued. 1. The Digital Transformation and Format Diversification The traditional dominance of print has been permanently challenged by the digital revolution, which has created diverse new avenues for consumption: E-books and Audiobooks: Digital formats continue their sustained growth, with audiobooks being a particularly significant revenue driver. They appeal to the modern consumer’s busy lifestyle, turning commutes and chores into reading opportunities. The flexibility and convenience of listening have established audio as an essential format, not just an auxiliary one. Mobile Reading: The widespread adoption of smartphones and tablets means that readers are consuming content wherever they are. This necessitates that publishers optimize content for smaller screens and cater to shorter, more digestible formats, acknowledging the shift to a mobile-first consumption experience.

content and new market opportunities: Lower Barriers to Entry: Platforms like Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) have made it easier than ever for aspiring authors to bypass traditional gatekeepers and publish their work, contributing to an overall increase in market competition and diversity of choice. Increased Author Control: Authors who self-publish gain greater creative control over their content, cover art, and pricing, often earning significantly higher royalty rates and benefiting from a much faster timeto-market. Independent Publishers’ Gains: Beyond selfpublishing, smaller, independent presses are proving agile and resilient. They are gaining market share by focusing on niche markets, taking bold risks with unique titles, and actively championing diverse voices and marginalized narratives that may be overlooked by larger, consolidated publishing houses. 3. The Influence of Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Direct-to-Digital Models: Publishers and authors are increasingly leveraging direct-to-digital strategies to publish works quickly. This model is valuable for testing new genres, reviving older backlist titles, or releasing supplementary content like short stories exclusively in a digital format. 2. The Rise of Self-Publishing and Independent Voices Digital platforms have fundamentally democratized the publishing process, leading to an explosion of

12

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming internal publishing operations, creating both efficiency gains and significant ethical debates: Content Creation and Editing: AI tools are being integrated into workflows to act as powerful collaborators. They can assist with automating tasks like structural analysis, advanced grammar checking, and even draft generation, promising to increase efficiency and speed up the editorial process. www.PrintedWordReviews.com

Marketing and Discoverability: Publishers are using machine learning for market analysis, predicting best-sellers, personalizing content recommendations to readers, and creating highly targeted advertising campaigns, allowing for data-driven acquisition and sales strategies.

turning a previously quiet title—often an older backlist bestseller—into a massive commercial success, demonstrating the power of peer-topeer recommendations. 5. Economic and Supply Chain Challenges

Intellectual Property (IP) Concerns: The use of generative AI in creating or assisting content has opened up massive Intellectual Property (IP) concerns. Questions around copyright infringement, the true authorship of AI-assisted works, and the ethical use of large language models are at the forefront of legal and industry discussions. 4. Shifting Business and Consumption Models

Despite digital growth, the physical side of the business faces persistent economic and logistical headwinds: Rising Production Costs: Publishers are struggling with escalating expenses for raw materials, most notably paper, which has seen significant price hikes. Increased printing costs due to labor and fuel are also putting intense pressure on operational budgets.

How readers pay for and discover content has undergone a fundamental shift, moving toward direct engagement and access models:

Supply Chain Disruption: Ongoing global supply chain issues, exacerbated by recent events, continue to plague the industry. These challenges include printing capacity constraints, a shortage of skilled labor, and high international freight costs, all of which lead to publication delays and impact inventory levels.

Subscription Services: The industry is moving toward a recurring revenue model. Subscription and membership services (such as those offered for e-books and audiobooks) provide readers with access to vast libraries for a monthly fee, fundamentally changing how content is valued and consumed.

Inconsistent Revenues: Fierce competition in the digital and retail spaces, coupled with the pressure to offer deep discounts to capture audience attention, can lead to reduced profit margins and unpredictable revenue streams, particularly for smaller publishers.

Direct-to-Consumer (D2C): Authors and publishers are increasingly bypassing traditional distribution channels to sell directly to their audiences through their own websites or exclusive channels. This D2C model allows for greater revenue control and the ability to build closer, more personal relationships with loyal readers. Social Media’s Role: Platforms like “BookTok” (on TikTok) have become unexpectedly powerful forces in book discovery and sales. These grassroots, organic communities can instantly drive demand,

How Do You Sell More Books? Authors and publishers should come to see their book’s readers as clients and market efficiently to them. A book, though special, is a product, just like a pair of shoes, television set, pizza, or a hammer. Once you set a book that way, you will have a clearer mind when selling it. Start to answer these questions:

How will you communicate with your potential client?

• Who are your targeted clients (readers)?

• Email newsletter

• Where can they be found – online, in-person, elsewhere?

• Blog

• How will they perceive what you are offering?

• Podcast

• When are they likely to want or need such a book?

• Social media posts

• Why is your book better than the other options available?

• Postcard mailed

• How will you engage with them?

• Flier handout • Speak at an event

Begin thinking about developing these multiple strategies

• Referrals or repeat customers

simultaneously: • Advertising strategy

Will you offer deals and incentives, such as:

• Social media strategy

Goals are the foundation of a solid marketing plan. They provide a target at which to aim, the standard against which you can gauge your company’s progress. Lancelot Schaubert Poet, Writer, Author, Performative Reading

As the author of the novel “Bell Hammers,” praised as “a hoot” by PW, Schaubert has published dozens of stories, hundreds of poems and essays. A full voting member of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers Association, Schaubert edits “The Showbear Family Circus” and the anthology series “Of Gods and Globes.” Schaubert believes art should change us for the better, motivating us to be true and good. My goal is to create work that fosters virtue in both myself and others. Lancelot Schaubert has sold work to markets such as MacMillan (TOR.com), The New Haven Review (Yale’s Institute Library), The Anglican Theological Review, McSweeney’s, Writer’s Digest, The World Series Edition of Poker Pro, Standard Publishing, the Poet’s Market, and many, many similar markets. Spark + Echo selected him as their 2019 artist in residence, commissioning him to craft more than a dozen short fiction pieces. He has ghostwritten and edited for NYT Bestsellers, written copy for large international nonprofit orgs and companies, and has served as an editor for bestselling fantasy authors Juliet Marillier, Kaaron Warren, and Howard Andrew Jones (for Of Gods and Globes). He also worked as a senior editor / producer for The Joplin Toad and Showbear Family Circus — the circus in its heyday published works from over 400 academics, authors, and artists. Links available. As a producer and director-writer, he started out at fifteen in high school as a radio DJ and a regional thespian and never quite slowed down: he reinvented the photonovel through Cold Brewed with Mark Neuenschwander. That work caught the attention of the Missouri Tourism Board (as well as the Chicago Museum of Photography), who commissioned them to create a second photonovel, The Joplin Undercurrent. He also worked on films with Flying Treasure, WRKR, etc.. He helped judge the Brooklyn Film Festival and NYC Film Festival. And he wrote and produced the albums All Who Wander and H.A.L.T.S., both of which he performed in NYC venues like Rockwood Music Hall. He lives and serves to help others make what they feel called to make: towards that end he has raised over $800,000 in the last seven years for small film, literary, audio, and visual arts projects. The second documentary film he’s working on this week focuses on those beneficiaries.
