QUICKTAKE: How do librarians think about independently published ebooks, and how do they acquire such ebooks?

What about print books?

Based on actual feedback from a librarian based in upstate New York, we offer the following insight.

BookCAMP : How do you learn about independently published ebooks?

Librarian: My area of purchasing is ebooks, so I’m limited to what is available for sale on the Overdrive platform. I have purchased some ebooks there based on patron requests when they turn out to be published in print only through Amazon.

We also subscribe to the Hoopla ebook platform, but libraries don’t have any say as to what is in Hoopla. As far as the rest of our book purchasers, they check the standard book review publications: such as Booklist, occasionally Library Journal.

We also pay attention to reader requests, and when a local author comes to us with a published book.

BookCAMP: Do you buy independently published books?

Librarian: Not much. Our major provider is Baker & Taylor. We have a lot of trouble ordering through Amazon! We have to make sure we are tax exempt for all purchases, and it isn’t easy to get that through Amazon. I have done it for myself, but as far as I know none of our other collection librarians have been purchasing through Amazon if any other way is possible.

BookCAMP : Through what outlets do you buy independently published books from?

Librarian: When we do, it is often by going to a bookstore such as Barnes & Noble, or purchasing from a local author directly.

If the book is available through Baker & Taylor we would order it through them.

BookCAMP :Any thoughts you’d like to share on independently published books?

Librarian: We do not buy independently published books unless A) we are approached by a local author, or B) we learn about it from the standard book review sources.

We do NOT want salesmen approaching us with independently published books. And as mentioned, I have had bureaucratic trouble buying through Amazon. Local authors or patrons who come to us with a book suggestion are welcome. We recently purchased an obscure children’s book because a local author came in with a friend of mine who talked to me first, and I took them to talk to the Children’s Librarian, who did then order the book.

Any additional book categories for that same book is $79 per category. 2. Run an ebook price promotion If you’re looking to hook new readers, consider putting your ebook on sale for $0.99. There are several affordable promotion sites that can share this sale with their database of genre-specific readers. This tactic gets your book in front of fresh eyes, and the sale price makes it easier for these readers to buy in to a book from a new-to-them author.

3. Add it to your social media rotation Oftentimes, authors stop talking about their past books on social media because they might feel like it is old news.

Instead, think of your book as evergreen content, and add it to your regular content rotation. Use it to record REELS or create relevant carousel graphics. Or, host a giveaway on social media that includes the book.

If you’re like the majority of indie authors, you’re probably looking at a fairly flat line when it comes to sales for your book (or books!) that is more than one year old—you might also call this your backlist.

4. Connect with other authors for collaboration and crosspromotion

It makes sense. In the excitement of a new book release, many authors pack all of their marketing ideas and promotions in the first few months. This typically leads to a nice sales spike at release, but the buzz tends to die down in the months that follow, leading to stagnant sales.

Remember you aren’t alone! There are other authors out there who likely want to bring life to their backlist books.

Reach out to other authors in your genre and arrange fun collaboration and cross-promotion opportunities. This could be a joint social media giveaway, a newsletter swap, or Instagram/Facebook Live chat.

So, what can you do if you’re an indie author looking to reinvigorate sales after one year’s release? Here are 5 things to give you a boost:

1. Refresh your metadata and Amazon page

If you are willing to invest some marketing budget, consider running targeted ads to your backlist book(s). These could be ads on Amazon, Facebook, Instagram, or Bookbub [or even with the Independent Press Award]. Advertising can help new readers discover your book, and while it may feel like an old book to you, it is a new book to these readers!

What is metadata? Metadata is the often overlooked piece of marketing—it’s the keywords, categories, and BISACs you assign to your book in KDP or IngramSpark. It’s your book’s description on Amazon (and other retail pages). Metadata tells Amazon what it needs to know about your book, and having fresh and optimized metadata helps Amazon display your book to the right audience. Additionally, if you published your book via KDP, make sure you are taking advantage of features like Amazon A+ content!

Ways Authors SELL BOOKS

By Brian Feinblum 1. Update or set-up your email signature to include your new book’s title and website.

2. Join Facebook or LinkedIn groups of like-minded genre authors or of fans of your type of books.

3. Inform online influencers, bloggers, and podcasters of your book – not just that it exists or what it’s about, but why they should care.

4. Build or revise your web site to feature your newest book.

5. Create a calendar to plan out your marketing activities and PR needs.

6. Build up a bank of content that you will need for your blog, podcast, and social media platforms.

7. Send emails no more often than once a month to people you have on your list. Keep building the list by giving away free content in exchange for one’s email address.

8. Create an elevator speech that includes what your book is about, why you are best qualified to write it, who it is for, and why people need/want it. Keep to about 200 words or a 30-40 second speech.

9. Define your reader’s targeted demographics and start to make note of where they exist – online and in the real world.

10. Explore sites that market books, such as BookGorilla, GoodReads, KindleBoards, BookBub, etc.

11. Get close friends and family to: -Buy your book on amazon and leave book reviews.

-Ask their friends and family to do the same.

-Post on social media about your book.

-Buy multiple copies to give as gifts.

12. Identify your keywords for Search Engine Optimization.

13. Post your information on Amazon Author Central.

14. Consider running Facebook, Amazon, or Google ads for your book ONLY if you have published three or more books, OR, your book is on a hot, must-have topic, such as: How to Get Rich, How to Get A Job, or something that has a bigger payoff other than just selling a book. Maybe you have a pricey webinar or you sell other products and services. Advertise those – or the book, if it leads to higher-cost items being sold.

15. Set up Google Alerts to monitor your name, your book’s title, and your book’s genre/industry.

16. Research appropriate book awards and apply if your book qualifies.

17. Give away free books – e-books and or print books – to promote yourself.

18. Create these marketing materials: --Press kit --Postcard --Flier --Bookmark --Business cards

19. Consult www.brownielocks.com to see what holidays, anniversaries, or honorary days tie into your book’s subject matter.

20. Create a QR code that people can scan to buy your book.

21. Inform your college alumni association/ magazine about your book.

22. Contact bookstores, libraries, and other places to speak about your book.

23. Create a list of news media you plan to reach out to – and draft pitches that you want to send. Find magazines, blogs, and websites that you can explore for book reviews, interviews, feature stories, or honorable mentions.

24. Seek out paid book reviews from legit reviewers and book publishing journals.

25. Create a two-minute author video or book trailer and share it on YouTube.

26. Host live events on FacebookLive, YouTubeLive, InstagramLive, Meetup, etc.

27. Solicit testimonials or endorsements from people with an expertise or respected title, like a best-selling author, professor, professional, or executive/manager at a company, non-profit, school, or government agency.

Spotlight on Poetry: How it Relates to Many Genres Poet Lee Woodman presents a few poems from her “Scapes” collections, leads participants in an intriguing exercise that applies to all genres of writing, and introduces ways of “stringing the pearls,” to attract publishers. Attendees are invited to bring a favorite photo or small object to the session. The focus will be on intense observation. Prompts will spark memories, characters, and places, providing ideas for future poems, scenes, dialogues, and stories.

Branding and Outreach: The Secret Life of A Writer Woodman presents a second session, “Branding and Outreach” at BookCAMP, to share her experience of “How Not to be A Hermit.”
