Since then, we have been privileged to receive thousands of submissions—from seasoned journalists and celebrated authors to first-time novelists and daring debut voices. We’ve honored works from storied imprints and bold independent presses alike, including Simon & Schuster, Blackstone Publishing, Berrett-Koehler, She Writes Press, Loyola Press, and many more who elevate the literary tradition in fresh and fearless ways. Tonight, we welcome a truly global gathering. Our honorees hail from every corner of the literary world, each carrying a story, a vision, and a voice that demands to be heard. Angela Kyparissis, The Dancing Darlings Distinguished Favorite Picture Books-All Ages Dr. Angela Kyparissis, a clinical and forensic psychologist specializing in social behavior, has been recognized at the 2025 Independent Press Awards for her children’s book, “The Dancing Darlings.” This delightful picture book, honored in the Picture Books-All Ages category, represents a unique transition for Dr. Kyparissis, who has translated her understanding of human behavior into heartwarming stories for young readers. Dr. Kyparissis’s journey to children’s literature stems from her professional experiences. Witnessing firsthand the impact of childhood experiences on adult lives, she recognized the crucial role of positive early narratives. The birth of her own children further solidified this understanding, inspiring her to create bedtime stories filled with vibrant imagery and meaningful messages. “My children...changed my perspective on what is important in life,” she explains, “and they inspired me to write my book.” These stories, initially created for her own children, evolved into “The Dancing Darlings,” a book aimed at fostering healthy mental and emotional development in young minds. Dr. Kyparissis finds inspiration in diverse figures. George R.R. Martin’s world-building prowess and Giannis Antetokounmpo’s humility resonate with her. She also expresses deep gratitude to her children, parents, and husband for their unwavering support. Fun and colorful stories for children aimed at helping their mental and emotional development,” encapsulates her writing’s purpose. In addition to her writing, Dr. Kyparissis founded Livres Agapé Books in 2023. Initially a platform for her own work, the independent publishing house has expanded to support other authors, offering a space for passionate storytellers to share their voices. With a promising lineup for 2025, Livres Agapé Books is poised to make a significant contribution to the literary landscape. “The Dancing Darlings” is a testament to the power of storytelling to nurture and inspire, a message that resonates deeply with Dr. Kyparissis’s work.

Penny Lane Redeemed: A Memoir of a Stolen Childhood Winner Memoir Penny Lane’s memoir, “Redeemed: A Memoir of a Stolen Childhood,” has been honored with the 2025 Independent Press Award in the Memoir category, recognizing its narrative of survival and healing. Lane, a lifelong reader and survivor of child and church abuse, transformed her harrowing experiences into a testament of resilience and hope. For years, Lane’s story, a stark contrast to her confident demeanor, prompted those around her to encourage her to write. “Penny, you need to write a book,” they urged. Thirty years after escaping her traumatic past, she finally did, driven by a desire to help others heal and find the courage to speak out. “Since books saved me during my ordeals,” Lane explains, “writing my story is the greatest way I know to honor my life and story, and give back to others.” Lane credits her journey to the unwavering support of friends who validated her experiences and the courageous voices of authors who dared to share their own stories of trauma. Writers like Dorothy Allison, Tara Westover, Jeannette Walls, Augustin Burroughs, Stephanie Foo, Maggie Smith, and Mary Karr provided inspiration and validation. Dorothy Allison’s “Bastard out of Carolina,” a semi-autobiographical novel about childhood abuse, particularly resonated with Lane, opening a path to her own healing. She expresses profound gratitude to Brooke Warner and her writing community at She Writes Press, as well as to her husband, son, and the many individuals who supported her throughout the writing process. Lane describes her writing style as “clear, crisp, direct and honest,” a reflection of her commitment to authenticity. “Redeemed” is a testament to this honesty, offering an unflinching portrayal of her past while illuminating the path to redemption. Lane extends her heartfelt thanks to the Independent Press Award for recognizing her work, a powerful story of survival and the transformative power of storytelling.

J.J. March, His Majesty’s Legacy-The Outcast Queen Distinguished Favorite New Fiction For this debut novelist, the path to authorship was a serendipitous journey, sparked by a vivid dream that transcended the initial trajectory of a dystopian project. What began as a different story entirely transformed into the foundation for a compelling medieval historical fantasy, imbued with religious mystery. Upon awakening from the dream, J.J. March immediately embarked on outlining and researching the narrative, driven by an undeniable urge to tell this particular tale. March attributes much of his inspiration to the positive role models in his life, most notably his late father. A retired Suffolk County Police officer, Dad exemplified bravery and integrity. Beyond his heroic acts, which earned him a bravery medal, it was his everyday kindness and dedication to family that left an indelible mark. His ability to bring laughter, instill the importance of familial bonds, and offer unwavering support during challenging times inspired March to emulate his character. The absence of new memories with March’s father is a poignant reminder of his lasting influence. Rather than a single literary figure, March draws inspiration from a broad spectrum of historical figures who courageously faced adversity or made significant contributions to humanity. This appreciation for historical resilience and impact informs the depth and complexity of their narrative. Gratitude is extended to family and friends for their encouragement, particularly to the March’s wife Patty. Initially intended as a personal project, meant only for a small circle of loved ones, Patty’s encouragement as an avid reader propelled the author to seek wider publication. This pivotal support transformed a private endeavor into a published work. The author describes his writing as “thrilling medieval historical fantasy blended with a touch of religious mystery.” This concise description captures the essence of a narrative that seamlessly weaves historical settings with fantastical elements and thought-provoking religious themes. The journey from a vivid dream to a published novel is a testament to the power of inspiration and the importance of unwavering support.

Norman Jetmundsen, Jr. and Karin Dupree Fecteau, Unrivaled: Sewanee 1899 Winner Coffee-table Book Norman Jetmundsen, Jr. and Karin Dupree Fecteau’s “Unrivaled: Sewanee 1899” has been honored with the 2025 Independent Press Award in the Coffee-table Book category, celebrating an extraordinary chapter in American sports history. The book, a visually stunning tribute, stemmed from the pair’s award-winning documentary of the same name. Jetmundsen, alongside David Crews, produced and directed the film, which chronicled the incredible 1899 Sewanee Tigers football season. This small college team achieved the impossible, winning five games in six days while traversing 2,500 miles by train, a feat that stands as one of the greatest in sports history. The documentary, aired nationwide and nominated for a Regional Emmy, captured the imagination of audiences across the country. Realizing the wealth of original paintings, historical data, and research amassed during the film’s production, Jetmundsen sought to immortalize the story in book form. Collaborating with graphic artist Karin Fecteau, they created “Unrivaled: Sewanee 1899,” a beautifully crafted coffee-table book published under their own Shakerag Hollow Press imprint. Jetmundsen credits numerous individuals for their influence, including his parents Ruth and Norman, a professor Douglas Paschall, Episcopal priests, his wife Kelli, and literary giants like Shakespeare and C.S. Lewis. He expresses particular gratitude to Fecteau, his wife, and the many who contributed to both the film and the book. “Don’t write so that someone might possibly understand what you mean. Write so that no one can possibly misunderstand what you mean,” a lesson from his professor Douglas Paschall, guided his writing. Jetmundsen acknowledges the challenges of self-publishing and expresses immense gratitude for the book’s recognition, a testament to the team’s dedication and passion.

Nicholas D’Souza, Death of a Blue Jay Distinguished Favorite Religion: Fiction Nicholas D’Souza’s “Death of a Blue Jay” has been named a 2025 Distinguished Favorite in the Religion: Fiction category by the Independent Press Award, marking a significant milestone in a writing journey born from personal revelation and unwavering faith. D’Souza’s path to authorship was not a traditional one, but rather a calling discovered amidst the challenges of post-collegiate life. After years of competitive swimming, D’Souza found himself searching for purpose. A friend’s suggestion to write for personal therapy sparked a creative exploration, leading to articles aimed at supporting those navigating mental illness. Though initial submissions were met with rejection, the act of writing itself became a transformative experience. A period of unemployment, coupled with a renewed engagement with reading and a deepening of his Catholic faith, proved pivotal. A cryptic text, containing a quote from his own past writing, affirmed his calling. This moment, along with a series of other “signs,” convinced him that his path was divinely ordained. D’Souza’s writing is deeply influenced by his faith and the example set by his devout friends. He also draws inspiration from J.K. Rowling, whose ability to craft the intricate world of Harry Potter, despite personal hardship, resonates with him. He expresses profound gratitude to God for guiding his journey and to his friends for their unwavering support. “Instead of bringing light to the darkness, bring the darkness to the light,” D’Souza summarizes his writing philosophy, reflecting his commitment to exploring difficult themes with honesty and compassion. “Death of a Blue Jay” stands as a testament to D’Souza’s unique journey, a narrative born from personal exploration and guided by unwavering faith. He is thrilled to be recognized as a 2025 Distinguished Favorite, a validation of his dedication to sharing stories that resonate with truth and authenticity

Christin Collins, be. love. Distinguished Favorite Mind, Body, Spirit One fateful evening Collins sat with her husband and stepdaughter on their back lanai, unpacking the difficult day. As Meghan graciously listened to the challenging events that had occurred, she nodded her head acknowledging active listening. When she finished sharing, she allowed the silence to penetrate, then softly shared the inspiration that changed everything. “Christin, you have been through so much in your life. It is with incredible bravery and courage that you have not only survived some major horrors, but from the outside your life appears to be carefree and simple. People have no idea what you have been through. You should write a book. If you shared your journey, it would inspire others to face their experiences. It would support healing for so many. It would really be such a blessing.” And so the journey began. Collins’ husband David has been my steadfast supporter, encourager and cheerleader since she met him 25 years ago. He also blessed her with two beautiful children, Brendan and Meghan, who taught her how to open her heart and experience unconditional love. Walking life with her little brother Jeffrey continues to fuel her soul. Cousin Colleen, Scott Kashman, Sarah Owen and her soul sister / editor / publisher Julie Colvin have been pivotal in life as well as in the distillation of be. love., whose influence cannot be expressed in mere words. While there have been many, witnessing the growth of Rich Roll has played a vital role in Collins’ personal and professional journey. As he connected with and expressed the evolution of his truth, it deeply inspired Collins to do the same. His writings and podcast, especially when aligned with his wife Srimati, continue to be fuel for courage and surrender. Other influences include: David Collins; Brendan, Landen and Tatum Collins; Scott, Meghan and Evelyn Tangen, Colleen Fitzgerald, Scott Kashman, Sarah Owen, Julie Colvin. Collins expresses her gratitude for the NYC Big Book Award honor and opportunity. She summarizes her writings with the sentiment: “Knowing and loving who you are is the key to all things, especially happiness.

Doreen Chaky and Adrienne Stepanek
Lynched: Mob Murders on the Northern Great Plains, 1882-1931 Winner History: United States Winner and Winner in Western Fiction Doreen Chaky and Adrienne Stepanek’s “Lynched: Mob Murders on the Northern Great Plains, 18821931” has garnered acclaim, winning both the History: United States and Western Fiction categories at the 2025 Independent Press Awards. This work documents a disturbing period in the Northern Great Plains, where mob violence and vigilante justice reigned, revealing a history often overlooked. Jon Stepanek, Adrienne’s son, shared the remarkable story behind the book’s creation. Both Chaky and his mother, in their 80s, dedicated seven years to researching and writing “Lynched.” Chaky, an established author with “Terrible Justice” to her name, brought her experience as a freelance writer and newspaper professional to the project. For Adrienne Stepanek, a seasoned historical and genealogical researcher and former city librarian and cemetery researcher, this marked her debut as an author. “Lynched” delves into the grim reality of mob murders that plagued the Northern Dakota Territory between 1882 and 1931. It exposes how citizens bypassed the legal system, taking justice into their own hands, and the rarity of subsequent prosecutions. The book’s strength lies in its meticulous detail, drawn from extensive research in courthouse records across the region. The authors express deep gratitude to the clerks and officials who aided their research, and to their families for their unwavering support. Jon Stepanek, along with his sister and daughter, are honored to accept these awards on behalf of Chaky and Jon’s mother, acknowledging the authors’ dedication to uncovering and sharing this vital, albeit harrowing, piece of American history. “Lynched” serves as a stark reminder of the complexities of justice and the importance of remembering the darker chapters of our past.

Jeremy Clift Born in Space: Unlocking Destiny Distinguished Favorite Science Fiction and Distinguished Favorite in Audiobooks Jeremy Clift’s “Born in Space: Unlocking Destiny” has been honored with the 2025 Independent Press Award in the Science Fiction category, alongside recognition for its audiobook edition. A former journalist and magazine editor, Clift’s transition to fiction marks a compelling exploration of humanity’s potential in the cosmos. Clift’s path to science fiction was unconventional. Inspired by asteroid mining’s economic possibilities and the resurgence of lunar exploration through the Artemis program, he sought to blend his journalistic rigor with imaginative storytelling. This fusion led to “Born in Space,” a narrative that delves into the societal implications of humanity’s expansion into space. He credits his teenage English teacher for instilling a love for language and literature, laying the groundwork for his writing journey. Clift draws inspiration from diverse science fiction authors, including Adrian Tchaikovsky, Mary Robinette Kowal, Cixin Liu, and Andy Weir, whose works masterfully intertwine human experience with scientific exploration. The 1969 moon landing also profoundly influenced his fascination with space and its transformative power. Clift expresses deep gratitude to his family, especially his wife, for their unwavering support throughout his publishing endeavors. “Born in Space,” the first installment in his Sci-Fi Galaxy series, explores the development of orbital habitats, asteroid exploitation, and the unique identity of those born in space. “My first work of fiction, “Born in Space”, explores the growth of orbiting space habitats, the exploitation of asteroids, and the profound question of identity for the first children born off Earth—humanoids shaped by the vastness of space rather than the familiarity of Earth,” Clift summarizes. He marvels at the dynamism of independent publishing, acknowledging the technological advancements that have empowered countless authors. “Born in Space” stands as a testament to this creative freedom, offering a thought-provoking glimpse into a future shaped by both scientific innovation and the enduring human spirit.

C. Fulster, Martha’s Notebook: A Zombie Apocalypse Trilogy Distinguished Favorite Horror C. Fulster’s path to the literary world began in an unlikely setting: a “Learn-to-Play” roller hockey class. While instructing young athletes, a conversation with a concerned father sparked an unexpected creative endeavor. The father’s lament about his son’s aversion to reading ignited a desire to craft stories that could captivate even the most reluctant readers. A trip to Barnes & Noble and a “How To Write Children’s Books” guide marked the beginning of this transformative journey. A significant influence in Fulster’s life has been his grandfather-in-law, Bob, a seasoned businessman whose passion for his work extended to his final days. Their most memorable conversation revolved around the author’s burgeoning writing career. When doubts arose, Bob’s unwavering encouragement, coupled with the revelation of his late wife’s secret children’s book authorship, provided the necessary motivation. This intimate sharing, a secret even from his own children, served as a powerful validation. Fulster’s literary inspirations range from the whimsical world of Dr. Seuss, which initially fueled his desire to write, to the captivating narratives of R.L. Stine and Katherine Applegate.
