PUBLISHER'S LETTER Welcome Book Enthusiasts, This month, in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month, Printed Word Reviews is proud to celebrate the power of bilingual storytelling. You will find the articles as well as the book reviews all bilingual. We’ve highlighted some exceptional bilingual authors, vibrant translations from four distinct translators, and cross-cultural, cross-genre narratives that showcase the incredible richness of literature spoken across two languages. Additionally, this month’s GAB TALKS features an exclusive interview with Mireya Saldúa—an inspiring children's author and publisher best known for Misa. As she announces her highly anticipated next project this month, with a featured front cover. Saldúa shares insights into her ambitious vision with her plan to release eight more titles in the coming year. Saldúa’s children's book series is so much more. In the words of Gabby Olczak, “At its heart, Fun with Misa and the Come Along with Misa series is about more than learning two languages. It is about embracing adventure, leading with kindness, celebrating diversity, and discovering that our differences can bring us closer together.” Often I speak about leadership and community. Without great leadership, our full potential is never reached. That said, it’s impossible to accomplish great things without a great team. I want to take a moment to thank all those involved in making this realization possible, and with the speed it happened: Andres Jorquera Sandoval, Kirk Whisler, Maria Francesca Calipari, Rebeca Ferrer, and most importantly, Fernando Cordero. You’ll be seeing Fernando a lot more in the coming months. He, along with Jack Olczak, will be walking the Spanish Hall in Frankfurt, Germany at the Frankfurt Book Fair, October 7-11th. They will be taking your stories, your initiatives, your news to bring our all Spanish edition of Printed Word Reviews En Español, www.printedwordreviewsenespanol.com, officially launching December 2026. “The future so bright, I’ve got to wear shades.” It’s remarkable what our team has accomplished in such a short period of time, upending old models, and giving decades (and century old) organizations a serious case of envy. So goodbye to all of those laggards and ‘green-eyed monsters,’ welcome to the new era of Printed Word Reviews. Until next month, keep on reading!

FUN DAY WITH MISA / UN DÍA DIVERTIDO CON MISA by Mireya Saldúa This bilingual English-Spanish tale follows Misa, a worried Aussie pup who expects a boring day while her parents are at work, but instead finds unexpected adventures with her grandma.
Mireya Saldúa’s Fun Day with Misa / Un Día Divertido con Misa delivers a gentle, emotionally resonant narrative that serves as an effective dual-language tool without losing its heartbeat.
Fun Day with Misa / Un día divertido con Misa, de Mireya Saldúa, ofrece una narrativa tierna y emotiva que funciona a la perfección como herramienta bilingüe sin perder su sensibilidad.
At its core, the plot is simple and highly relatable to its target audience (ages 3–8). Misa, a miniature Australian Shepherd puppy, faces a common childhood milestone: a grandparent's coming over to watch while her parents go to work. Saldúa captures the initial, dramatic dread of a toddler or young child (in this case a puppy) who assumes that a day without mom and dad will be "totally boring."
The strength of the narrative lies in its pacing. The transition from Misa’s initial reluctance to her eventual joy under Granny Maria’s care is earned.
Critically, the book takes a brave turn midway through by addressing separation anxiety head-on. When Misa wakes up from a nap and cannot immediately find Granny Maria, she panics. This moment is handled with empathy. Instead of dismissing the puppy's fear, the story validates it.
As a bilingual text, the book functions remarkably well. Rather than using a rigid, literal wordfor-word translation that can ruin the rhythm of a read-aloud, the English and Spanish texts flow naturally alongside one another. The English text relies on active verbs and conversational pacing that mirrors how young children actually speak. The Spanish text is rich and grammatically fluid, serving as an excellent vehicle for heritage speakers looking to maintain vocabulary, or for language learners picking up contextual clues.
By keeping the text blocks relatively short and cleanly separated on the page, the book prevents young readers from feeling visually overwhelmed by having two languages on the screen or paper at once.
Cleofe A. Pacaña’s illustrations are bright, warm, and highly expressive. Misa’s character design relies heavily on large, emotive eyes, which effectively communicate her shifting moods from skeptical and pouty to joyful and panicked. The backdrops of the house and garden feel cozy and inviting, reinforcing the underlying theme of safety and familial love.
A clever addition to the book's structural layout is the inclusion of an interactive search challenge. By asking children to spot specific objects (like a blue bone and Misa's name in Japanese characters) throughout the pages, Saldúa and Pacaña successfully turn a passive reading experience into an active, engaging game. This is particularly useful for younger readers (ages 3–5) whose attention spans might drift during longer text passages.
Fun Day with Misa is a heartwarming, culturally rich, and highly practical addition to early childhood libraries. It beautifully celebrates intergenerational relationships and provides a comforting mirror for children navigating the anxieties of parental separation. Highly recommended for bilingual households, dual-language classrooms, and grandparents looking for the perfect read-aloud story.

Mireya Saldúa With

By Gabby Olczak
hat if a simple day of puppysitting could lead to an award-winning children’s book series? For Mireya Saldúa, that ordinary moment became the beginning of an extraordinary new chapter. Her debut book, Fun with Misa, published in June 2025, launched a planned nine-book series. Readers can follow Misa as she explores new adventures, meets new characters, and learns valuable lessons alongside her human parents, granny, and friends she loves. Through interactive activities in the books and on the accompanying website, children can engage with English and Spanish in an enjoyable, accessible way. Originally from Chicago’s South Side, Mireya has built a life in the Midwest alongside her husband of 41 years, Matthew. She worked in HR for more than 30 years earning a Bachelor’s Degree and an MBA. Mireya shared her journey in a recent episode of TheGabTalks.
Gabby: Your debut book in the series, Fun Day With Misa (Un díaa divertido con Misa) was released in 2025. Share your journey with us from HR Professional to a successful children’s author. Mireya: I wrote the book at lunchtime when I was puppysitting Misa who has so much energy and so much love. I

Gabby: Mireya, if you could sit down with one child and one grandparent anywhere in the world and hand them a copy of Fun Day With Misa, what would you want them to feel when they turn the final page? Mireya: Joy. Misa just spreads joy, and she is joy. Mireya’s journey is a reminder that inspiration can come from the most unexpected places. What began with Misa has grown into a much bigger mission: bringing families together through stories while opening doors to language and cultural discovery.
had written the story about four or five years ago, and it was sitting on my shelf. Then last year I worked with a couple of wonderful people, my editor, Natalia Sepúlveda. and illustrator Cleofe Pacaña. Gabby: Misa is the star of the show. How much of her personality is actually Misa versus your imagination? If she were a human child, what would she be like? Mireya: Misa would be very inquisitive as a human child, and she is as a puppy. The book is based upon her personality. She’s a ball of energy, and she means business when she wants to play. She will not let you out of her sight. Misa is just wonderful, inquisitive, and loving.
At its heart, Fun with Misa and the Come Along with Misa series is about more than learning two languages. It is about embracing adventure, leading with kindness, celebrating diversity, and discovering that our differences can bring us closer together. For Mireya, one very special grandpup has shown just how powerful love can be.
Gabby: You are a first-generation Mexican American and grew up in the Southside of Chicago. Spanish was your first language. Your family was bilingual. You have said that you intentionally created a bilingual format. What is your hope with the Misa series for bilingual families? Mireya: It is important for me to not only share my language, Spanish, but also to help those who don’t know the English language so well. Last week I attended nine reads-alongs for kids at one school, and they all loved Misa. I had them engaged and introduced Spanish by having them repeat some of the words in Spanish. I want to introduce the Spanish language and culture to children.
To listen to and watch th full interview visit www.theGabTalks.com. To learn more about Mireya and Misa visit ComeAlongWithMisa.com
Gabby: Misa is your grandpuppy. There's something really beautiful about the relationship between Misa and her Granny. Why did you want grandparents to have such an important place in this series? Mireya: Grandparents spoil their children, and I do spoil Misa. A lot of the stuff that you see in the book is what we’ve experienced. The sharing of these experiences is a wonderful way to continue having that relationship with your grandchild because that builds on memories. Children remember the wonderful things that their grandparents did with them. Reading the book helps with that relationship. It makes the bond stronger. Gabby: With nine books planned for the series, your books and Misa are becoming a movement! You inspired a song, Misa Misa Life is Beautiful, sung by artist Leddy Marie. Your website is totally interactive. You have a PLUSHIE, T-shirts, and magnets. What do we have to look forward to for the Come Along With Misa series?. Mireya: Another book is going to be coming out soon. I have already written the first four books. Misa is going to have some cat cousins coming along. That’s going to be some sort of interaction, but Misa is the boss! In the fifth book, Misa has a play date. She’s going to have friends from both the dog side and the cat side to come over and play with the pinata. Once the first nine books are written, Misa will meet Santa or Misa will have a fun day with a leprechaun because my husband and my sons have Irish in their background. We plan to do a whole year of Misa and then end it with her first birthday. I’m from the south side of Chicago and grew up in the historic Pullman neighborhood where there is the beautiful Hotel Florence that George Pullman built for his daughter. The ninth book will be Misa Has Tea at the Hotel Florence. www.PrintedWordReviews.com

Love, Sugar & Cookie by Susan Marie Chapman | Amor, Sugar & Cookie by Susan Marie Chapman This adorable story by Susan Marie Chapman follows Pomeranians Sugar and Cookie and the sisterly bond that ties them together despite their different personalities.
Love, Sugar and Cookie is a charming tale about sisterhood and what Sugar and Cookie get up to throughout their days. Sugar is reserved and poised, while Cookie is sassy and energetic. While Sugar enjoys a relaxing time, Cookie seeks adventure like trying to capture lizards. Their differences shape the way they experience everything. As different as they may seem, they balance each other out and get to be there for one another no matter the situation.
Throughout the book, the twins go to the beach, meet up with their dog friends, and get treats when they can. These may seem like everyday dog activities, but for Sugar and Cookie being with each other makes them special experiences.
Their times together are embedded with the love that can only come from a sister. They happily accept each other’s quirks and complement one another, strengthening their bond. The book highlights the importance of familial ties despite differences while maintaining a playful nature, accompanied by cute pictures of Sugar and Cookie.
The short and fun descriptions of the happenings on the pages allow for the story to be engaging and a page-turner. The language is playful with fun analogies and insight into the dogs’ personalities. The text is accompanied by an array of photos of Sugar and Cookie in the midst of their adventures which helps bring their distinct personalities to life.
Love, Sugar and Cookie is a lovely celebration of sisterhood, in which their differences make their bond stronger. Through Sugar and Cookie’s everyday adventures, the book celebrates the importance of the in-between moments surrounded by loved ones. With its playful language and adorable photos, the story will appeal to young children, especially those with siblings.

Killer Friends by Chris Karlsen | Amigos Asesinos de Chris Karlsen In 1892 London, detectives Ruddy and Archie unravel a web of deceit and betrayal as they investigate the mysterious disappearance of businessman Phillip Newell, leading them to confront a ruthless killer with a personal vendetta.
In “Killer Friends,” Chris Karlsen transports readers to the soot-stained streets of 1892 London, delivering a historical mystery that balances meticulous period detail with the grit of a modern thriller. Part of the Bloodstone series, this fourth installment proves that even in the Victorian era, some of the deadliest threats come from those we once trusted.
The novel thrives on its Victorian atmosphere. Karlsen immerses the reader in a world of gaslight, fog, and rigid social hierarchies. As a historical mystery, the book leans heavily into its setting, using the period’s investigative limitations to heighten suspense. It is a perfect match for fans of Anne Perry or C.S. Harris who appreciate a detective story where the backdrop feels like a living character.
The narrative kicks off with an unsettling discovery: the disappearance of Phillip Newell and the shooting of his loyal dog, Snowball. This immediate act of cruelty sets a dark tone for the investigation led by Detectives Ruddy and Archie.
What starts as a missing persons case quickly evolves into a calculated murder investigation. The antagonist, Eric Lawry, is driven by a toxic mix of resentment and business-related grievances. The early reveal of the culprit, Eric and his accomplice Leo, shifts the book from a “whydunnit” to a high-stakes “how-will-they-catch-him” pursuit.
The strength of “Killer Friends” lies in its procedural elements. Ruddy and Archie are methodical, navigating a web of deceit that spans from high-society business dealings to the shadowy corners of the Chameleon Club. The introduction of Honoria Underhill, a former Pinkerton agent, adds a fresh layer to the team. Her presence hints at the changing social tides of the era and provides a compelling foil to the established detectives. In addition, the investigation turns personal and perilous when a decoy operation results in the death of an officer. This tragedy serves as a turning point, stripping away the “adventure” of the chase and replacing it with a grim, urgent need for justice.
The story culminates in a visceral confrontation at a bank. In true Victorian thriller fashion, the resolution isn't found in a quiet parlor room, but through a dramatic shootout. While the detectives eventually bring the perpetrators to justice, the victory is hardearned and bittersweet. The ending provides a much-needed breath of air, as a recovering Ruddy looks toward a future with Honeysuckle, grounding the high-octane plot with human emotion.
“Killer Friends” is a standout historical mystery that excels in character development. By including a historical note on Ruddy’s military service, Karlsen adds a layer of authenticity that makes the protagonist feel anchored in real history.
If you're looking for a mystery that combines the procedural rigor of the “Pinkertons” with the atmospheric tension of “Victorian London,” “Killer Friends” is a must-read. It’s a story of perseverance that reminds us that while friends can be “killers,” justice has a very long memory.

Eternal Love by XUEMO | Amor Eterno de XUEMO Facing terminal cancer, a woman confronts a lifetime of family abuse and marital betrayal through letters to her spiritual guide, finding hard-won peace, courage, and self-redemption.
Eternal Love by Xuemo is a raw, insightful testament to human endurance. Through letter correspondence between Yatou, a woman dying of late-stage tongue cancer, and her spiritual mentor, Guru Xue, Xuemo delivers a narrative that is equal parts grueling and transcendent.
The epistolary structure serves a dual purpose: it acts as both a confession and a sanctuary. Denied a physical voice by the cauliflower-like growths consuming her tongue, Yatou finds her true voice in ink. This stylistic choice creates an intense, almost uncomfortable intimacy.
Xuemo details the physical indignities of Yatou’s decline. Descriptions of choked airways, hemostatic injections, and rotting flesh are delivered with unsparing realism. Yet, this visceral brutality is counterbalanced by a serene, meditative underlying tone. The prose oscillates between the harrowing, day-to-day logistics of pain, physical betrayal, and bodily decay to the gradual quietude that comes from detaching from ego, fear, and mortality.
What lifts Eternal Love above typical end-of-life stories is its critical examination of cyclic abuse. Yatou’s life is defined by a tragic symmetry: fleeing a violent, authoritarian father only to enter a secret, controlling, and physically abusive marriage. Her cancer is not presented merely as an isolated biological tragedy, but as part of a longer continuum of physical and emotional trauma.
When Yatou’s husband throws her into the winter cold, it triggers a quiet epiphany. Her escape to Guangzhou, living separated without the neat closure of a legal divorce, reflects her broader journey. She learns that liberation rarely looks like a pristine, Hollywood-style resolution; sometimes it is simply the courage to step out of a fire while still carrying the burns.
Her relationship with Guru Xue avoids guru-worship. While she initially seeks a cure to replace the abusive men in her life, her eventual relapse forces a deeper realization. True spiritual growth isn't a linear path to bodily immortality; it is the messy, uncomfortable unlearning of fear.
Because Yatou is increasingly confined to her room in Guangzhou, the narrative becomes intensely claustrophobic. The middle acts that revolve around repeated bleeding episodes, editing work, and reflective letters, mirror the agonizing crawl of terminal illness itself.
Readers looking for a triumphant medical miracle or an aggressive, dramatic confrontation with her abusers will not find one here. The novel’s resolution is entirely interior. Eternal Love is a rigorous, brilliant, and sobering study of suffering and freedom. Xuemo offers no easy comfort, showing that acceptance does not mean the absence of pain, but the end of resistance to reality. Supported by the steadfast presence of her caregiver, Xia Yu, Yatou’s final days showcase a profound truth: while the body may rot, the human capacity for agency, clarity, and peace can remain entirely untouched.

r. Lori Schneider is a neurologist and medical acupuncturist having completed her studies at New York University. She has built a career centered on medicine and patient care. Alongside her professional career, Schneider has found another passion where she expresses herself through writing and poetry. Poetry has become a cathartic outlet for Schneider. When the COVID-19 pandemic shocked the world in 2020, she discovered how putting her emotions into poetry gave her a new perspective during such an uncertain time in recent history. What started as an opportunity for reflection then evolved into a recognized body of work. Schneider turned her poetic voice to children’s literature through The Inspiring World of Ella Rose La Fleur. Told across a collection of poems, the book follows young Ella Rose as she faces the unknown on her journey to Paris to visit her grandmother. Along the way, she has new experiences that encourage her to embrace curiosity and discover the value of adventure, friendship, and family. Ella Rose’s trip is more than a simple adventure. Schneider builds Ella Rose’s world through fun rhymes, organizing the poem collection around the people, interests, and experiences shaping her childhood. Each poem offers a new piece of Ella’s world, from family and friends to everyday experiences. Readers get to accompany Ella in her discoveries of everything that surrounds her. Her experiences inspire her and become opportunities to connect with others, such as learning French for her journey abroad. The book’s message has resonated beyond its readers, earning Schneider multiple book awards. Furthermore, the story has evolved into a collection of YouTube videos that continue to follow Ella Rose narrated through Schneider’s poetry. The videos support the Pinky Swear Foundation, raising awareness and funds for children undergoing cancer treatment. Schneider’s work is a celebration of curiosity and adventure, inspiring children to learn new things and embrace the unknown just like Ella Rose.

Set in Mexico City, the narrative takes the reader from Montezuma’s Aztec city of 1519, and Hernán Cortés’ conquest of the Aztec Empire, to Mexico City of 2032. Journalist Francisco Montoya opens the tale searching for facts about the strange events that occurred in Mexico City’s Zocalo on Día de los Muertos in 2026. His search leads him to an odd man in a local bar who reveals to Montoya the dramatic story.

Lola Perez, a police detective, and Daniel Zavala work side-by-side to solve the mystery.
In the realm of domestic suspense, the ultimate nightmare is the fragility of a hard-won peace. Kay Louise Bowen taps into this primal fear in "Secrets II: Vengeance & Revenge," a multi-layered psychological thriller that proves some secrets refuse to stay buried. Picking up eight years after the chaotic events of her debut novel Secrets, Bowen delivers a tense narrative of obsession, family loyalty, and the devastating ripple effects of unhinged vengeance.
The novel follows Gina and Neil Adams, a couple who have spent nearly a decade rebuilding their lives and fostering a safe, stable environment for their autistic son, Teddy. But a milestone anniversary trip to Dubai quickly shifts from a celebration to a harbinger of doom. A chilling, anonymous phone call warning that "some things do not stay buried forever" coincides with a terrifying news report: Annabel Hayes, Neil’s violent,
delusional ex-partner, is up for parole. As the threat of Annabel looms from prison, a second, more immediate danger quietly embeds itself in their hometown of Weymouth. Diane, a volatile woman with a history of mental illness, takes a job at the Haven Hotel, managed by Neil’s sister, Abby. Diane quickly develops a toxic fixation on Neil and a bitter resentment of Gina’s life.
When Annabel breaks her parole conditions and aligns with the equally unstable Diane, the family’s worst fears are realized. In a moment of brief distraction at the hotel, young Teddy disappears. What follows is a race against time that spans police investigations, public appeals, courtroom dramas, and a shocking act of violence that proves the danger isn't over even after the handcuffs are slapped on.
Bowen builds a claustrophobic atmosphere by squeezing her protagonists from two entirely different directions. The dual threat of Annabel’s calculated delusion and Diane’s proximity and erratic jealousy puts the reader in a state of unease.
The coastal town of Weymouth and the Haven Hotel serve as the backdrop for this domestic drama. By anchoring much of the plot around a family business, Bowen highlights how crime disrupts not just the target, but an entire community of friends, coworkers, and relatives (such as the sharp-eared Abby, who plays a pivotal role in the book's climax). Gina and Neil are sympathetic, grounded protagonists whose desperation to protect their vulnerable son grounds the book’s more melodramatic twists in genuine human emotion.
"Secrets II: Vengeance & Revenge," is an emotionally charged domestic thriller that will appeal directly to fans of Harlan Coben and B.A. Paris. While it functions as a standalone, readers who enjoyed the first book will find immense satisfaction in seeing the final, definitive reckoning between Neil, Gina, and the ghosts of their past.
Bowen delivers a compelling reminder that while revenge is a dish best served cold, the

Set against 2017 Puerto Rico, the narrative follows Saint John, a U.S. serviceman’s son, and Mateo, a local teen trapped by familial trauma and gang ties, as they navigate a forbidden romance.
In 2017, military brat Saint John relocates from Brooklyn to San Juan, long accustomed to frequent moves and keeping his attraction to boys a secret. Meanwhile, fifteen-year-old Mateo lives in Río Piedras, skipping school to avoid relentless bullying while hiding both his sexuality and his terror of local gang violence. Compounding Mateo's struggles is his family's deep-seated resentment of Americans; a generational grudge passed down through the women in his household following a past assault by a U.S. soldier.
The strength of the novel lies in its atmospheric rich setting and the poignant symbolic resonance of its titular ritual. Karl uses the backdrop of San Juan, from Piñones to secret riverside hideaways, to ground Saint and Mateo’s romance in authentic geography and shared vulnerability. The central romance offers a delicate counterweight to the external chaos, using the Night of San Juan tradition as an emotional anchor that symbolizes hope and endurance. With multiple events and happenings such as conversion camp threats, intergenerational anti-American trauma, gang murders, and a pair of catastrophic hurricanes into a single narrative, the plot feels overburdened at times. The post-Hurricane Maria separation, stretching across communication blackouts and an abusive relocation to Connecticut, threatens to displace the delicate intimacy built in the first half. Ultimately, Night of San Juan succeeds as a powerful testament to resilience and young love. While its sprawling plot points occasionally risk overshadowing its emotional core, the story’s authentic atmosphere and triumphant reunion offer LGBTQ+ readers a deeply cathartic and memorable coming-of-age journey.
