Spring eases us gently out of our homes and into the heat of summer as we emerge out of winter’s icy grip that kept us captive indoors. The best part about spring is the sense of renewal it brings. One feels inspired to make changes. To start anew. Watching nature change around us inspires change within ourselves. Whether you want to spring-clean your home, change your diet or get back into a fitness routine, it’s a time for transformation. What better time to update and inject energy into your wardrobe? In our Spring issue, we look at all the latest fashion trends straight off the runways. Playful fringes, sexy sheers and a twist of lime bring new life into spring outfits. Look out for this season’s hottest colour, Love Bird, which we already see popping up in stores. Adding a dash of this lively green to your wardrobe will give it an instant on-trend update.

As we slowly move into summer and head outdoors we have to make changes to our skincare routine but before we can do so we have to spring clean our products and become more aware of how the change in season affects our skin. In our beauty section, you’ll find all the tips you need to keep you’re skin looking and feeling good throughout the warmer days ahead. Media personality Success Lekabe steps into spring with the launch of her first perfume and chat’s with us about her refreshing career shift.

Known for his modern take on African prints, designer Mzukisi Mbane once again gave us an unforgettable print party – bold graphic prints that ranged from stark black and white to vibrant hues like emerald greens, bubblegum pink, oranges and bold yellow.

SAMW Fashion Week Spring/summer 22 highlights GERRY CUPIDO FASHIONISTAS, designers, photographers, influencers and models gathered at the Wonderland Film studios in Cape Town for the South African Menswear Fashion Spring/Summer 2023 shows (SAMW).

SAMW returned for the final 2022 instalment and featured more than 36 designers and 20 emerging and young designers across

a wide range of menswear and womenswear collections.

During the three days of backto-back shows, we saw spring/ summer collections from some of South Africa’s most established fashion brands, such as Ruff Tung, Stefania Morland, Leigh Schubert, Ruald Rheeder, Habits and Imprint, as well as collections from emerging young and newly discovered talent.

Fashion enthusiasts who were happy to be able to attend physical fashion shows once again filled the seats at every show to feast their eyes on a variety of styles from streetwear to couture as designers sent their summer collections down the runway.

Here are a few of our highlights from the three-day fashion extravaganza.

STEFANIA MORLAND

RUFF TUNG

Known for her signature bows and feminine florals, this well-known South African designer gave us a bright, airy and undoubtedly summer collection. With acid limes, bright pinks and citrus lemon, the colour palette alone set the tone. On par with international summer 2023 trends, her large floral appliqué was a prominent feature in the collection which was seen in both ready-to-wear and evening wear.

Ruff Tung’s Spring/Summer 2023 collection truly embodies the playfulness that summer brings. Bold floral prints in orange and cerise combined with her sexy signature sequins. Bridget Pickering’s all-inclusive collection of easygoing jumpsuits and flirty dresses was a sight to behold. Happy, smiling models of all shapes and sizes showed off pieces that ranged from all day any day wear to sexy all-sequins shimmering dresses to dance the night away.

HABITS Habits is an established fashion brand loved by all looking to add classic pieces to their wardrobe.

Staying true to the black and white looks, polka dots were front and centre in this collection. While dots were strongly featured, there we are few geometric prints seen on a pants suit and a classic wrap dress.

A few of the looks were accessorised with hats and fascinators by milliner Bettina Thomas.

RUALD RHEEDER The Ruald Rheeder show was all about monochromatic colour. The bright hues shown head-to-toe in various tones and fabrics were a perfect play with summery purples, blues, oranges and yellows. The colour palette was undeniably summer. While the collection was a mixture of men’s and womenswear, the standout piece was the orange feather tassled full-length evening dress.

After winning the AFI Fastrack Designer of the Year in 2021, sustainable-fashion designer Shamyra Moodley has been on the rise with her colourful pieces as she recycles items such as saris, sack cloths and upholstery fabrics. At the show, we saw exquisite hand embroidery, layering, patchwork and innovative use of hoops.

From subtle pale blues to uber-bright acid greens, the Ele Apparel featured a combination of men’s and womenswear. The collection included sheer netting in bright yellow, flowing tie-dye dresses and exquisitely tailored pants and shirts in delicate fabrics.

Top 3 fashion trends

GERRY CUPIDO OVER the past few months, fashion designers have been showing off their spring/summer 2023 collections at fashion weeks across the world, giving us a glimpse of the hottest trends. We’ve picked out three to look out for this summer.

ROYAL MOOSH

A TWIST OF LIME

Lime is this season’s must-have colour and it’s starting to pop up in fashion stores. The Pantone Color Institute predicted that Love Bird, “an exotic green with a lively character”, was the colour to take note of. Whether in subtle tones or uber-neon brights, it certainly cannot be missed. We saw the refreshing tone at the Versace show, worn head to toe in silk and lace, while Fendi used the shade on their gowns. Other designers who featured the hottest colour were Micheal Kors and Brandon Maxwell.

FRINGES ARE HERE TO STAY

You’re probably wondering: “Fringes? Again?” Yes, fringes are a thing and won’t be going away any time soon.

This season, it’s more in your face than ever before. Designers have gone all-out with the trend, with super-size woven or knitted fringes, longer-length skirts and dresses with long fringes and evening gowns with layers of ’20s-inspired fringes.

Proenza Schouler, Jason Wu, Jil Sander, Ulla Johnson, Micheal Kors, Khaite and Bronx and Bunco are among the designers showing us how to wear fringes this summer.

BARELY THERE SHEER

Another trend that might not be groundbreaking but constantly makes an appearance on the runway is barely there sheer. And who doesn’t want to wear light, dresses and tops during the hot summer days?

Throw on a sheer slipdress over your shorts or a see-through tank top over a bikini-bra for a laid-back casual and comfy style.

EVERY season, there’s that one colour that pops up on every runway during fashion week.

Prior to London Fashion Week, The Pantone Color Institute had named its top 10 fashion colours for spring/summer 23.

The collection for next season focuses on a range of contrasting colours which Pantone said: “Encourage experimentation and individualistic expression”.

The top 10 colours are Fiery Red, Beetroot Purple, Tangelo, Peach Pink, Empire Yellow, Crystal Rose, Classic Green, Love Bird, Blue Perennial and Summer Song.

Leatrice Eiseman, the executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, said: “Colours for spring/summer 2023 are recalibrated for the new era we are entering. Blending escapism with reality, wholesomeness and joy, we embrace the exploration of extreme contrast in mood and colour.

“There is utility and basic-ness to this season’s colour story, and at the same time, there is an uplifting vital sense of play that comes through.”

Bold vibrant colours were undoubtedly one of the biggest trends to come out of fashion week. This summer is going to be awash with zesty citrus tones and pink seems to be here to stay.

However, there was one colour that stood out, simply because we haven’t seen it dominate the runway as it did this year.

The Pantone shade, Love Bird – an exotic green with a lively character – is the colour to watch. We saw the colour pop up at the Fendi, Versace and Michael Kors show as well as at SAMW fashion week in the Stefania Morland show. To get in on this hot colour trend, here’s how you can incorporate the lively tone into your wardrobe.

Be bold and wear the colour head-to-toe.

This look is not for the faint-hearted but it’s striking. Keep it simple by opting to wear this bright colour either at the top or bottom of your outfit.

If you don’t want to invest too heavily in a colour that could be a fleeting trend, then accessories are a great way to incorporate this. Whether it’s a fun bucket hat or a pair of sexy heels, just a splash of green will elevate your look.

Pops of colour

Whether it’s tiny buds for your ears or a bold flower statement ring, you simply cannot go wrong.

Add pops of colour with beaded flowers hair-clips or a floral headband.

Whether it’s a pair of multicoloured tassels or beaded earrings or a pastel perspex ring, a gold necklace with a colour gem pendant or a bracelet with pretty charms, look out for pieces that will brighten up your look.

GERRY CUPIDO EARLIER sunrises and shorter nights indicate that it’s steadily on its way. Many are eagerly awaiting the warmer days so that we can once again show a bit of flesh. All the summer wear you packed away to make space for the bulky pullovers and puffy jackets will soon find its way back into your wardrobe. While we are all excited about ditching drab winter gear, it’s a great time to phase in different accessories as the woollen scarves, gloves and beanies start to move to the back of the closet.

Remember that cute pearl choker you wore all of last summer? And what about those colourful earrings? Of course, you do! The time has come for you to bring them out as we slowly transition from winter to spring.

Be bold Piercing different parts of your earlobe and wearing a variety of small studs or rings makes as big a statement as wearing one large earring. The combination of the position of the piercing and the type of earrings make for endless possibilities to get creative.

Show off your neck Layering is still one of the hottest accessory trends. Wear different lengths and types of links. Mix it up with beads and chains. Even add in some funky pendants. If you’re looking for inspiration on layering necklaces, all you have to do is check out all Rihanna’s looks.

White-framed sunglasses

are a must-have this spring GERRY CUPIDO When it comes to fashion nothing says spring is here quite like floral prints, bold colours and crisp whites.

While the days are not quite hot enough for those flowing frilly floral dresses or bottom-hugging cheeky shorts, it sure is time to pull out those funky sunnies.

It’s not to say that we haven't been rocking cool shades during winter when the sun

came out to play, but it’s just not the same as sporting fab sunglasses in summer.

While the classic black frames and aviators will never date and are must-haves in any sunglasses collection, white-frame sunglasses have become essential.

And the great thing about these trendy frames is that they come in all shapes.

Whether you prefer

something smaller to start with or bold enough to go big or go home, if you haven’t gone white before, now is the time.

A white frame is about as bright as any neon colour so they are not for the person who prefers to blend into the background.

Here are five pairs of white-framed sunglasses we are loving right now. One for every mood. One for any occasion.

THE CAT-EYE If you don’t own a pair of cat-eye shaped sunglasses yet, then you’re not serious about sunglasses. Whether you have a pair or not, you have to add a white pair. White cat-eyes will give your look an instant ’50s Hollywood glam update.

BLING BLING DARLING Who doesn’t love a bit of bling? The gold Versace Madusa surrounded by glittering diamantes on the thick white frame is the perfect touch of bling.

ALL ROUNDER Round shaped frames will always give us Jackie O vibes – a playful yet classy look that can take you from lunch to the beach.

ROSE-TINTED WORLD Nothing makes life look better than rosetinted shades. Pink tinted lenses set in thick white frames are the perfect combination.

SQUARED BUT NOT BOXED IN Square shaped sunnies are all the rage right now – the edgy, younger Gen Z sister to the classic round or oval shape.

Protect your skin against ageing

GERRY CUPIDO WITH summer on our doorstep, we’re excited to get outdoors and bask in the sun.

As much as we all love being outdoors in summer, our skin does take a toll during the festive season (which is coming up pretty soon) especially. “At least 80% of skin ageing is a result of extrinsic factors (sun exposure, stress, sleep, diet etc), and even more if you have a high sugar diet or smoke,” says Dr Judey Pretorius, a biomedical scientist and founder of Biomedical Emporium.

Effectively, that means you can slow skin ageing to a large degree. Dr Pretorius believes a consistent skin-care routine will impact the seasonal stressors on your skin.

Here are her tips on how you can protect your skin during summer.

BE GENTLE ON YOUR SKIN

If your skin is prone to irritation and allergies (especially fair skin types), then you should avoid using skin-care products that contain fragrances and dyes. Also, avoid skin-care products that contain preservatives (and irritants) like methyl and propyl parabens.

KEEP IT FRESH

Don’t use expired skin-care products. In general, try to be disciplined with your skin-care routine, ensuring that you finish your products in a timeous fashion.

GET YOUR GLOW ON

If you have a big date up ahead, and you would like your skin to have a revitalised and naturally illuminating appearance, up the ante by booking a 25% glycolic acid peel four days prior to your event. This milder peel aids in dead skin cell removal and collagen contraction.

BANISH BREAKOUTS

If you struggle with intermittent breakouts, try using your cleanser (left on overnight) as a spot treatment. Opt for a cleanser that contains salicylic acid or lactic acid as these have anti-inflammatory properties. They are also naturally anti-microbial which makes them breakout busters.

MAINTENANCE IS KEY

Follow a basic, three-step skin-care routine for both mornings and evenings. I propose the following: Morning 1. Cleanse 2. Apply a serum rich in hyaluronic acid 3. Apply a moisturiser with an SPF Evening 1. Cleanse 2. Apply a serum rich in niacinamide and retinol 3. Apply a moisturiser that contains peptides. The latter contains amino acids which are excellent for revitalising fatigued skin.

THE SWEET SMELL OF SUMMER VENECIA VALENTINE Media personality Success Lekabe launched ‘Sun Goddess’ fragrance and spoke about refreshing career shift IF THERE’S anything delicious about summer for me, it’s the refreshing fragrance of fruits, and so I always invest in those fruity body spritzers just to awaken the summer senses.

Success Lekabe understood the assignment and recently launched her first-ever fragrance which bursts with the aromas of coconut, vanilla and citrus.

Lekabe told IOL Lifestyle: “The aroma in this fragrance is definitely my favourite. It’s an alluring fragrance with notes of creamy coconut, fresh bursts of citrus and radiant warmth of vanilla, a fresh and amazing combination.”

Lekabe collaborated with Watkins, who also manufactured Breyton Paulse’s fragrance, Pulse with Watkins.

The radio presenter explained: “I was a judge at a school pageant, Breyton Paulse was there and we all know how he recently launched his perfume. I got introduced to Heste White from Watkins and that's where it all began.

“She called and asked if we could go for coffee because there is something she would like to run by me and that’s when she told me about being the face of their beautiful fragrance. I couldn’t resist.

“Sun Goddess launched on September 24.”

Lekabe added: “Sun Goddess is inspired by the beautiful African Sun. “We wanted to create a fragrance that reflects our continent’s sun-drenched summers.

“Embodying a solar deity, representing the sensuous and strong African women. Wearing the Sun Goddess Eau de Parfum we want to capture warmth and radiance. We want you to let your inner goddess shine.”

Lekabe said the fragrance is available for purchase at watkinsonline.co.za and via Watkins distributors in South Africa, Namibia and Botswana.

Other celebs who also launched their own perfume include Connie Ferguson, who

launched True Self in 2008 and a lotion in 2014.

She was also the face of Garnier.

Boity Thulo owns Pink Sapphire, a hair perfume consisting of a light, nourishing mist infused with argan oil, giving sugar and jasmine notes with wild marigold, French lavender, and tangerine.

Aside from the latest achievement, Lekabe also had to shift to a different career since the kykNET talk show she presented weekly, ended this year.

Originally from Potchefstroom, Lekabe said: “I had the privilege to be part of five seasons of Tussen Ons with formidable women.

“My biggest passion in life has got to be people. Trying to make a difference in any way I can in every corner of the world I move in.

“Well it’s been an interesting couple of months, I started work in the corporate world.

I’m currently working for a media, marketing, communication and brand group called &More Group, as their brand manager.

“We specialise in brand development and brand rescue, pioneering podcasts as a multimedia marketing and branding tool. Talk about being outside your comfort zone! I’m loving every second of it.

“I’m still in the radio world, weekdays between 3 and 6pm with Martin van der Merwe on Bok Radio.

“I’ve been doing some talks and corporate functions and enjoying working with the Durbanville Children’s Home.”

“With a name like Success, I tend to be a bit of an overachiever, all in all, trying to change the world.

“I live by the mantra ‘Dream big, work hard and stay humble’.

“I’m so excited to be where I am in my life and being as present as possible in every moment and life experience. There are definitely going to be surprises in the future, some of them might surprise me, too.”

Spring clean your skincare items

GERRY CUPIDO RIGHT now everybody is on a “get ready for summer” mission.

People are getting excited about the warmer days ahead, whether it’s changing your diet, heading back to the gym or swapping out your wardrobe by packing away winter clothes to make space for summer items. Our homes are freshened as folk frantically do deep cleaning and a few decor changes to usher in the new season. But have you considered freshening and changing your skincare?

While it’s vital to alter your skincare routine to brighten up your dull skin for summer, you have to stop and check your products. When was the last time you spring-cleaned your dressing table and bathroom cabinet?

Out with the old

It is essential to check the expiry dates on your skincare and cosmetic products.

Using old products can cause more damage than good.

Breakouts are one of the most common side effects. Many beauty products now have a “use by” date on their labels.

If lipstick is dry and smells funny, throw it out. Don’t use mascara for longer than three months. If your foundation has started separating, then it’s trash.

Get organised

Mornings can be a crazy rush so it’s easy for your products to end up all over the counter or hastily thrown back in the drawer. When products are in order or neatly packed it

makes it difficult to find what you’re looking for you’re in a hurry and you can’t keep track of what’s in use, expired or simply not working for you.

Arranging your products neatly will not only help you get organised but will bring you great satisfaction. It’s the same feeling you get when you’ve tidied up your grocery cupboards!

Try something new

As mentioned before, it’s time to change your skincare routine. You might already have a range that works well for you during summer but those products might be old by now. And did they really work for you? Now is the time to try something new. Your skincare needs might have changed from the previous season as well.

We can finally start to peel off the many layers of clothes we’ve had to pack on during the icy winter days, the scent of our favourite perfumes tucked away under woollen scarves and thick puffer jackets. With blossoms coming up everywhere, one is inspired to swop all the greys and blacks for pops of colour.

In much the same way, we can exchange those heavy woody perfumes for lighter floral and fruity scents. Here are new fragrances to look out for to set the mood for the warmer days ahead.

SÌ PASSIONE ÉCLAT DE PARFUM

Pop Edition is a delightfully playful fragrance that spreads joy and positivity. Top notes of bergamot, mandarin, peach and kiwi.
