The year was 1983, a pivotal moment when the seeds of empathy and justice were sown, birthing In Defense of Animals — a beacon of hope in the relentless fight against cruelty and injustice toward our fellow beings.

Imagine, if you will, the myriad lives that have crossed our path, their stories etched in the tapestry of time. Animals who have known suffering beyond measure, trapped in the clutches of human greed and ignorance. It is for them, the forgotten and forsaken, that we rise and roar, a collective force against the tide of apathy.

Through the pages of our history, our journey unfolds — a mosaic of battles waged in courtrooms, in streets, and even within the chambers of the heart. Our victories, as bright as the sun breaking through storm clouds, remind us that our efforts do make a difference. The rescued souls, once shadows in cages, now dance with joy in sanctuaries, testament to the change that compassion can enact.

Thank you for your continued support. Without you, none of this would have been possible.

Yet, do not be beguiled by our many victories; our mission remains a challenge fraught with thorns. The agonizing cries of animals still echo in factory farms, laboratories, and zoos. The Earth trembles beneath their burden, a weight they should never have to bear. We are their shield, their armor against the onslaught of human indifference.

Friends, activists, kindred spirits, I beseech you to heed the call that resonates from the depths of these hearts and souls in need. The march toward animal liberation is far from over. We must band together, stronger and more united than ever, a symphony of compassion that reverberates across mountains and valleys.

Only through compassionate donations are we able to promptly rescue animals from abusive circumstances, deliver vital medical care, and secure them nurturing forever homes.

Our cover star is Ranger. Abandoned in a school playground, he is one of 600 dogs and cats we rescue and rehome every year at our Hope Animal Sanctuary in Mississippi.

Honoring Dr. Elliot Katz: A Lifelong Defender of Animals Dr. Elliot Katz, the visionary force behind In Defense of Animals, dedicated his life to protecting and advocating for animals. Freedom Farms is our brand new animal sanctuary in central California. Set on 44 acres of fields, forest, and a river, it was formerly a celebrity compound for Hollywood royalty; Debbie Reynolds and Star Wars actress, Carrie Fisher. It will become the home headquarters for In Defense of Animals, dedicated to our ideals of defending animals, their advocates, and the planet.

It is already home to dozens of animals, some saved from slaughter. Cows, cats, dogs, equines, ducks, and peacocks live happily and peacefully at Freedom Farms, receiving love, care, and veterinary attention. They are free to roam, graze, play, and socialize with their friends… including the native wild deer, ducks, and rabbits!

President Dr. Marilyn Kroplick negotiated a generous offer for the San Rafael office, then purchased Freedom Farms from movie director Todd Fisher in December 2022. The sanctuary and refuge spans lush pastures and woods, and features a variety of housing and habitat for animals, including humans!

Our dream is for Freedom Farms to serve as a center for humane education, advocacy, and outreach. It is an ideal place to come for workshops, retreats, and special events focused on positive personal actions to create a compassionate world. We aim to offer tours, events, and volunteer opportunities for people who want to make the world a better place for all animals.

Freedom Farms has its own solar farm, and we plan to manage the sanctuary sustainably. Not only are we focusing on low-impact living, we want to regenerate tired soils and become self-sufficient to feed the animals, staff, and guests.

Our mission at Freedom Farms is to rescue and care for animals in need, while promoting animal rights, veganism, and coexistence. We believe that all beings deserve the freedom to live, and to have a safe place to heal from past trauma. Many of our animals were rescued, chose to make the sanctuary their home, or have lived here for generations.

We are actively improving our sanctuary and looking for ways to help more needy animals. We are currently fixing up the existing structures on the property such as the barns, sheds, and houses.

Our dearest wish right now is to build a shelter for the cows to protect them from the harsh elements.

Our mission to heal our broken relationships with other animals, ourselves, and each other couldn’t be more urgent or necessary.

In Defense of Animals has a remarkable 40-year history, filled with accomplishments and groundbreaking victories for animals. For four decades, our mission has been to defend the rights, welfare, and habitats of animals, elevating their status beyond mere property.

Our work spans the globe, from the streets of India and South Korea to rural Mississippi here in the United States.

We address cruelty in various forms, from dog and cat markets in Asia to factory farms in the U.S., and so much more.

Californians for Responsible Research forms and holds its first meeting following the August 1983 Mobilization for Animals event at UC Davis and other sites.

In Defense of Animals is officially designated as a 501(c)3 nonprofit, making all donations tax-deductible.

The first organized, nonviolent civil disobedience for animals is held at the entrance of the UC Davis Primate Center. Sixteen activists and IDA President Dr. Elliot Katz are arrested and jailed.

IDA campaigns to prevent state funding of a proposed animal research facility at UC Berkeley in California. The precedentsetting campaign results in a cease and desist order, a fine, and the legislature holding back millions of dollars until major changes in the system and animal care are put in place.

In the U.S., IDA plays a major role in popularizing World Week for Animals in Laboratories, an annual week of civil actions, marches and educational events to expose the terrible suffering occurring in laboratories around the world.

IDA coordinates the largest demonstration to date at the main campus of the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Md. Hundreds of activists assemble to protest the cruelties of maternal deprivation and psychological animal experimentation.

IDA blocks a new animal laboratory in San Francisco and secures the release of 30 of UC Berkeley’s primate victims to a sanctuary.

Six activists scale a 175 ft. crane on a UC Berkeley construction site and occupy it for a week, gaining international press coverage and public awareness about the university’s underground animal research facility.

IDA brings national attention to chimpanzee addiction experiments at Emory University’s Yerkes Primate Center in Atlanta. Three activists scale a building on the campus and unfurl a giant banner that reads “Save the Yerkes Chimps.”

IDA prevents the U.S. Army from breaking the legs of 120 retired racing greyhounds and secures their release. Collaborations with IDA end head crash experiments on cats and block the U.S. Navy’s plans to use dolphin soldiers.

IDA saves 150,000 baby seals from being slaughtered in South Africa and wins the freedom of 42 additional retired racing greyhounds.

IDA begins a high-profile campaign to end Procter & Gamble’s hideous animal testing.

Twenty-five thousand people attend the 1990 March for the Animals in Washington, D.C., initiated and cosponsored by IDA.

IDA’s Project Hope files 167 counts of animal cruelty against a puppy mill in Paris, Miss., and rescues 153 starving hens from an abandoned egg farm.

IDA files a formal complaint with the National Institutes of Health and the USDA about the notorious Coulston Foundation’s terrible history of animal cruelty and abuse. The USDA responds by filing formal charges against the Coulston Foundation in New Mexico. The decade-long campaign will eventually save the lives of the chimpanzees and close down the foundation.

IDA starts coordinating Fur Free Friday, an annual day of protest against the fur industry, rescues 86 large exotic animals, and prevents a buffalo hunt in New Mexico.

IDA and partners block the Walt Disney Company’s plans to capture and import elephants, hippos and rhinos from South Africa.

IDA cancels an Arizona hunting competition that would have killed up to 1,000 bobcats, coyotes, cougars and foxes in a single weekend.

IDA’s Director of Research testifies before Congress, calling for chimpanzee experiments to end.

IDA helps pass Taiwan’s first law protecting homeless dogs from cruelty and abuse.

IDA Africa’s Sanaga-Yong Sanctuary is developed deep in the forests of Cameroon as a sanctuary for chimpanzee victims of the bushmeat trade.

Activists barricade themselves inside the UC Berkeley clock tower, and IDA hangs a banner that reads, “End Vivisection, Animal Liberation.”

IDA wins another landmark victory when the Coulston Foundation is forced to surrender 300 of its 650 chimpanzees.

Boulder, Colo., becomes the first city to introduce the term “guardian” into all its animal-related ordinances. It’s the first brick in the road of IDA’s Guardian Campaign to legally establish animals as more than mere property.

With several partners, IDA rescues 118 beagles and 55 monkeys from a toxicology laboratory in Oxford, N.J., and saves 11 horses from neglect and starvation.

IDA rescues 12 dogs and one cat from South Korea and rehomes them in the U.S. In Brazil, IDA partners with Kinship Circle to aid animal victims of flash flooding and giant landslides.

Dr. Elliot Katz appoints Dr. Marilyn Kroplick to head IDA. She continues to lead the organization according to Dr. Katz’s founding principles while developing forward-thinking programs that are essential to support and grow the animal rights movement.

Over 2,000 dogs and cats are spayed and neutered, and another 2,000 receive veterinary care for their wounds and injuries by IDA India. To educate young people, IDA India creates the “Compassionate Children’s Club.”

Richmond City Council in California ends the sale of live birds at its farmer’s market after an IDA co-organized campaign.

In Mississippi, IDA rescues four neglected horses in dire need of medical attention and posts a reward offer to catch a man who poisoned six family dogs, which leads to his capture and trial.

IDA Gives Chained Animals a New Lease on Life Across the world, millions of dogs and other animals endure almost their entire lives restricted outdoors on chains or ropes. These dangerous restraints lead to a host of welfare issues, and can end in death. In Defense of Animals helps end the nightmare for chained animals.

We have rescued hundreds of chained and tethered dogs, horses and even cats in the Deep South. In Defense of Animals organizes seizures and placements of individuals in imminent danger. We work directly with guardians to help educate them about the cruelty and dangers of chaining and provide assistance. We raise public awareness about tethering at every opportunity. Our Break the Chains campaign also cooperates with a network of advocates to pass animal tethering restrictions.

GOALS: ⊙ It costs around $650 to unchain a dog, including an investigation, engaging law enforcement, working with the justice system, plus veterinary and foster care. ⊙ Our annual cost to fund this program is $46,800.

★ Every year, we unchain scores of dogs in Mississippi and find them loving forever homes. ★ We regularly organize rescues of tethered and neglected horses with law enforcement and partner organizations. ★ In Defense of Animals encourages the enforcement of tethering laws and seeks justice for animals killed by chaining.

IDA Protects Community Cats Perfectly healthy cats across the country are being trapped and killed in misguided attempts to manage community cat populations. Free-roaming cats are widely misunderstood, and often fall victim to deadly human ignorance and intolerance.

In Defense of Animals is challenging the outdated “feral cat” paradigm, and encouraging communities away from trapand-kill in favor of trap-neuter-return. We support humane and effective community cat management programs that undertake life-saving trap-neuter-return, and strive to protect community cats and their outdoor homes.

IMPACT: ★ We have fought cat killing plans in Australia, Mongolia, Hawaii and in the mainland U.S. ★ Every year, we provide critical medical care and spay/neuter surgeries to hundreds of homeless cats in Mississippi and India. ★ Our collaboration with Torre Argentina in Italy gives shelter and veterinary care to around 200 homeless cats and spay/neuter services to 5,000 cats annually.

IDA Fights for Captive Animal Freedom We work towards a world where animals are free from capture, breeding, sale, performance, and other exploitation. Our mission is to evolve beyond using animals for entertainment. We focus on advocacy for individuals as well as systemic change, taking on zoos, circuses, marine parks, and the pet trade.

GOAL: ⊙ $250 funds the cost of an entire demonstration which advances public and political will to free an imprisoned animal.

We aim to reduce the degree and quantity of captive animal suffering, with our ultimate goal to end their exploitation. Our public education about the plight of captive animals raises awareness and shifts public perception of exploitative zoos, marine parks and petting farms. We work to end animal captivity in zoos, marine parks, circuses and the pet trade and champion their release to sanctuaries.

IMPACT: In the past year alone, we have achieved a great deal for captive animals: ★ Memphis Zoo sent abused panda YaYa back to her homeland in China. ★ Won support from celebrities such as Ricky Gervais, Billie Eilish and Richa Moorjani, and generated hundreds of thousands of emails to decision makers. ★ Held eye-catching demonstrations for suffering animals like Rocky the coyote and Spur the tortoise in the Chicago area. ★ Secured sanctuary homes for many animals from a New Jersey petting zoo. ★ Partnered with Los Angeles Alliance for Animals to shut down neglectful Griffith Park Pony Rides & Petting Zoo.

IDA Fights for a World Where Dolphins & Whales Are Protected & Respected In Defense of Animals is bringing about a world where dolphins, whales and their natural ecosystems are protected and respected, instead of exploited. Dolphins and whales, collectively called cetaceans, are some of Earth’s most remarkably sentient beings.

Yet they are being slaughtered for food and taken from the wild for lifetimes of confinement.

We defend cetaceans by campaigning to keep them in the wild where they belong, and work to close existing captive display facilities and replace them with sea sanctuaries where animals can live out their lives in peace.

IDA Has a Proven Commitment to Ending Elephant Captivity Elephants are highly complex, social animals. In the wild, they live in extended family groups and form lifelong bonds. In Defense of Animals’ goal is to end elephant exploitation through eliminating demand for elephant captivity in zoos, as well as their capture or killing in the wild.

We work to heighten public awareness and inspire action to save elephants from lifetimes in captivity. Our annual 10 Worst Zoos for Elephants list exposes zoo failings and raises the profile of captive elephant suffering. Our efforts have aided in the decision by 34 zoos to permanently close their elephant exhibits and helped to release a number of elephants to sanctuary.

IMPACT: ★ 2019: After years of persuasion, the Oregon Zoo ceases using bullhooks and stops forcing the elephants to perform tricks after being shamed on the 10 Worst Zoos list. ★ 2021: IDA’s 10 Worst Zoos list highlights the cruelty of transfer abuse, and a pending transfer of two elephants between the top two worst zoos is canceled. ★ 2022: Moby and Ricky Gervais help launch the 10 Worst Zoos list, which reveals how zoos cause brain damage to elephants. IDA Is Fighting for Tule Elk Survival There are only around 5,700 rare, native Tule elk left on Earth.

Yet hundreds of elk are dying, by design, at Point Reyes National Seashore due to private ranching. A fence built to prevent them from competing with cows for vegetation and water is killing elk by thirst and hunger.

Leading surges of action with like-minded citizen activists and organizations, In Defense of Animals has turned the tide of public opinion and gotten the National Park Service to reverse a 45year policy of confining the Tule elk. We organize high-profile demonstrations, we speak for the Tule elk at key meetings, and during droughts, we organize, lead and support daring, caring activists to bring water to sustain them.

Fish are one of the most abused groups of animals on the planet.

Despite irrefutable scientific evidence that fish feel pain, many animal cruelty laws don’t apply to fish. As a result, they are killed by the trillions in the food sector, the pet trade, laboratories, and blood sports.

★ 2020: IDA launches the first-ever Respect for Fish Day with over 120 partners.

We advocate against fish abuse in all sectors, and to spread awareness that they are sentient beings who experience pain and joy.

IDA Works To End The Cruel Fur Trade Each year, fur farms around the world kill more than 100 million animals — including over two million dogs and cats. Millions more animals are victims of trapping, caught in the wild using spring traps that crush bone and tear muscle.

Consumers need to know the incredible amount of suffering in each piece of fur. The fur trade will end only when consumers refuse to buy or wear animal fur of any kind. In the U.S., there are no federal protections for the millions of rabbits, foxes, mink, chinchillas, and other animals confined in fur farms. The fur industry remains completely self-regulated.

IMPACT: ★ 2020: IDA’s fur coalition teams up with Ricky Gervais, making strides with legislators, and winning fur-free pledges from major retailers including Nordstrom and Sephora. ★ 2021: IDA’s fur campaign continues to clock up wins, with an unprecedented number of leading fashion brands going fur-free! ★ 2022: Dolce & Gabbana becomes the latest major fashion label to ban fur. IDA Protects Geese From Cullings, Roundups & Cruelty Whenever anyone complains about goose poop in their community, the property owner’s answer is usually a death sentence for these beautiful, sensitive birds. When geese are removed or rounded up, parents are separated from their babies, and they desperately call out for each other. Every year, many thousands of geese are brutally killed in gas chambers even though more effective alternatives can be used that help geese and humans.

In Defense of Animals established the National Goose Protection Coalition in 2019 to protect geese by raising awareness of how humans and geese can coexist peacefully. We provide nonlethal goose conflict solutions via our expert mentors and virtual presentations, raise awareness about goose sentience and debunk myths about goose behavior and biology, actively prevent and stop goose roundups, and expose corruption and waste of funds from goose roundups.

IDA Gets Justice for Abused Animals Animal cruelty has no boundaries, whether through neglect or intentional acts of violence against animals. Our Justice for Animals campaign — led by IDA founding member, Doll Stanley — rises to the challenge to promote an environment in which just laws for animals are enacted and enforced.

For over 30 years, we have forged strong coalitions in the Deep South that incorporate law enforcement, judges, prosecuting attorneys, humane representatives and citizens.

Together, we pass stronger laws, work with law enforcement to leverage existing animal laws, provide guidance in investigating cruelty complaints, establish resources to address cruelty cases, organize hundreds of rescues and empower future generations of caring individuals. We’ve filed hundreds of animal cruelty cases in Mississippi, and had more successfully prosecuted than any other organization. Our cases have directly led to improved animal protection laws to deter crimes against animals.

IMPACT: ★ 2021: Abusers get maximum sentences and animal survivors get the happilyever-after they deserve — including an intentionally-burned puppy. Justice is upheld in a horrifying dogfighting case thanks to a law Doll helped form. ★ 2022: Buddy’s Law finally passes in Mississippi, ensuring children who torture animals will receive counseling and treatment. Doll gets justice for many abused animals, including bestiality victims. ★ 2023: Doll coordinates a rescue of 73 abandoned dogs. She fights in court to see justice for the victims, including 70 others who perished.

Wild animals face cruel treatment and killing in wild and urban areas. Much of the precious habitat — which is vital for wild animal survival — has already been taken by humans, and the pace is accelerating. Hundreds of species including coyotes, birds, black bears, beavers, porcupines, river otters, mountain lions, and wolves face additional threats from hunting, trapping and fishing, or human conflicts in urban areas.

In Defense of Animals protects wild animals. We counter misinformation spread by those who exploit wild lands and animals. We demand that federal agencies carry out their duty to protect and preserve wild animals and their habitats. With a coalition of animal welfare groups, conservationists, and environmentalists, we propose humane, science-based solutions that allow wild animals and humans to coexist.

★ 2021: IDA supporters successfully lobby legislators to restore endangered species protections and pass a law to save Arctic animals. ★ 2021: IDA invests in two major projects to support cougar coexistence in Los Angeles and blocks a destructive disc golf course in California. ★ 2022: With help from IDA supporters, California passes key laws to protect great white sharks and other wild animals.

IDA Works to End the Dog & Cat Meat Trade Although it’s a minority practice, millions of dogs are brutally slaughtered for their meat every year across Asia. Dogs are stolen, raised in dire conditions in farms and backyards, or “adopted” from kill shelters. Cats are also killed and eaten, in smaller numbers. In Defense of Animals works with Asian activists to save lives and end the killing.

We campaign for dog meat bans wherever the dog meat trade still exists, through independent initiatives as well as our new Global Anti-Dog Meat Coalition. We educate, advocate and eliminate the market for dog meat through political, celebrity and community pressure campaigns. Our vision is to ensure dogs and cats all over the world are seen as loving and protected friends, not food.

IMPACT: ★ We’ve shut down illegal dog meat farms and rescued over 1,200 of dogs from the meat trade since 2017 with our Korean partner, Jindo Love Rescue. ★ In Defense of Animals is supporting the rescue and care of dogs and cats from meat markets in Yulin. ★ Dog meat demand is declining, and being banned in many cities, regions and provinces in Asia.

In Defense of Animals / Jindo Love Rescue

We Give Hope to Abused Animals in the Deep South In 1993, In Defense of Animals established Hope Animal Sanctuary in rural Mississippi to provide a means of rescue and refuge for animal victims of abuse and neglect. In a region devoid of animal shelters and other vital animal control services, our sanctuary is critical in providing hope for animals suffering in the Deep South. Our main focus is to rescue, rehabilitate and rehome dogs and cats suffering from starvation, disease, violent abuse and extreme neglect.

Our animals live in a “neighborhood” of 20 tiny houses with climate control and secure outdoor access to play and relax. Dogs and cats live in small groups with each other instead of being kept alone. All our rescued animals receive outstanding veterinary care and are spayed or neutered. Our dedicated caregivers give them love and get them ready for adoption.

IMPACT: ★ Every year, we work with partners to rescue and place more than 600 dogs and cats in loving homes in Connecticut, Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. ★ As well as rehoming animals, we also provide a lifelong home at the sanctuary for animals who need special care, including three horses and 10 dogs.

GOALS: Animal rescues are currently under extreme pressure and brimming full. Nonetheless, we aim to continue rescuing and rehoming hundreds of animals. We cannot give up on them. ⊙ Our dearest wish is to establish a spay and neuter program to prevent animals being born into suffering which will cost $15,600 annually. ⊙ Our horse residents currently need a new shelter and fencing which will cost $55,000 to replace.

We’re Saving Thousands of Lives in India What we’ve accomplished together with IDA India since partnering in 2005 is simply incredible. Every year, we aid over 25,000 animals! Many are homeless, while others have caretakers who want to ensure that they get the help they need. Countless individuals we treat are suffering from injuries, illnesses or cruelty and wouldn’t survive without our intervention.

Despite the challenges we’ve faced, from needing to replace ambulances and upgrade equipment, to annual monsoons that can be devastating, we’re dedicated to continuing our work to rescue and help as many animals as we can, and seek to inspire compassion toward them.

GOAL: ⊙ We urgently need to raise $12,000 to buy our own X-ray machine. We want to be able to provide care immediately on-site to everyone who needs our assistance with an injured animal. Our own X-ray will save time and money, enabling us to help many more animals.

Horses are terrified of the helicopters that indiscriminately force young, old, and pregnant horses to run for their lives. Many die in the process, including young foals. Cattle and sheep ranchers are causing wild horses to be driven off public lands, and many will be shipped to horse slaughterhouses in Mexico or Canada. I stand with In Defense of Animals against this brutality and call for an end to wild horse roundups.
