The IUL 2018 in Goa between the 6-9th of February seeked to advance debates on emerging questions around sustainable tourism on one hand and water resilience, growth and development on the other through the lens of commons. Commons are perhaps the first casualty of the rapidly urbanizing geographies, the state of Goa being no exception. While they continue to exist in their physical dimensions, often exhibiting a downward spiral, their ties with communities are severed. Yet, their potential to service communities and the spaces these communities inhabit remain. The functional capacities of the commons emerge as the only constant. In theory, to say the least, urban commons encompass a huge potential much of which remains unleveraged as is evident from the disarray experienced everyday in the modern day urban.
