Over the past 25 or more years, I have heard various people at UIW ask when things are going to stop changing. “When are we going to settle down?” Just when one new initiative is winding down, something new is on the horizon.

Everyone who has been associated with UIW over these years will know we have experienced a long line of new programs, new campuses, new buildings, and many, many new people. Sometimes our alumni say that they hardly recognize the campus where they once spent so much time.

I noted at the Mass of the Holy Spirit - our prayerful beginning in late August to the new academic year – that now is the time to consider the deeper, unchanging hallmarks of UIW. These include our Mission, our relationship to the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word, the character and commitment of our faculty and staff, and the great, young people we teach and direct towards their future opportunities.

Sitting in the President’s Office, I have the perfect vantage point to observe our students passing from one side of the campus to the other. Their backpacks, their earbuds, their baseball caps and UIW insignia have changed over the years. But their enthusiasm and energy are still as inspiring to me as the first students I met on this campus almost 30 years ago. They, more than any other single aspect of UIW, remain constant. They, after all, are the primary reason all of the rest of us are here. Their education is our Mission and our ministry. Their wellbeing is our concern. Their future success is our present responsibility.

As we settle into another semester at UIW, I know that we won’t ever be totally settled. Change will continue to unfold as we introduce new programs, anticipate a new School of Osteopathic Medicine, anticipate the completion of the long awaited Student Engagement Center, and welcome the freshmen Class of 2016.

And under the leadership of the board of trustees, we will begin the exciting and enormous responsibility of seeking a new president for our cherished institution.

The more things change, and they will as we begin the visioning process of imagining the future, the more we should welcome the familiar tug of our roots and our unchanging foundations.

campus news UIW announces new sibling tuition discount program

School of Professional Studies announces expansion of daytime classes UIW School of Professional Studies (SPS), formerly the School of Extended Academic Programs (EAP), announced the expansion of the daytime blended learning program to its Northeast campus. The change is for its non-traditional students attending the SPS. Beginning with the first 8-week fall term, SPS began offering five blended courses on Tuesday mornings at the Northwest Center.

Both undergraduate and graduate business administration degrees will be available at this location. At the Northeast Center, located inside Rolling Oaks Mall, four undergraduate classes are now offered on Thursday mornings. Students meet in class with their professor one day a week. Additional assignments and discussions are completed online. This format will cut the classroom time in half, while increasing the student/professor interaction through the online tools.

The blended education model that SPS incorporates into its degree programs is designed to meet the growing demand from working professionals who prefer not to miss out on the traditional face-to-face classroom experience, but require the flexibility inherent with working irregular hours or shifts.

“We offer classes in the daytime to meet the needs of students who cannot attend our evening classes,” said Vincent Porter, dean of the SPS. “We chose a blended format to accommodate an adult student’s busy schedule. Blended formats give students a flexible delivery model that combines the traditional face-to-face classroom setting with the convenience of online learning tools.”

UIW has announced a new tuition discount program to support families that have multiple dependent children at Incarnate Word from the same household.

Eligible families will receive a $5,000 discount for their second student enrolled and a $10,000 discount for a third or more sibling. In the case of twins or triplets, eligible amounts will be divided evenly. To be eligible for the program, all siblings must be enrolled at the same time as full-time, undergraduate, main campus students and reside in the same household. Although the discounts are not need-based, students must be verified as dependents on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) application each year.

Funds will be applied to tuition only. Students that receive other UIW scholarships, grants or discounts may combine the awards as long as the total does not exceed their full-time tuition.

Students with UIW athletic scholarships or dependent waivers do not qualify.

Siblings must apply to receive the discount and must submit a new application annually. The discount is only for the fall and spring semesters.

campus news UIW Pastoral Institute hires new director UIW is proud to welcome Dr. Jakob Karl Rinderknecht as director of the Pastoral Institute. Rinderknecht comes to UIW via St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn., where he was a visiting professor. He also served in the Department of Theology at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis. Rinderknecht earned a bachelor’s degree in liturgical studies from Valparaiso University, a Master of Arts in Theology from St. John’s University and a Doctor of Philosophy in Religious Studies from Marquette University.

He follows Sr. Eilish Ryan, CCVI, who recently retired as director of the institute. During her 35-year tenure, Ryan was instrumental for the program’s growth and development.

In addition to the Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry, Ryan oversaw the addition of an undergraduate major and minor in Pastoral Ministry. These degrees are offered in cooperation with the Mexican American Catholic College (MACC).

Rinderknecht is looking forward to developing current programs hosted by the institute and continuing UIW’s long-

standing commitment to making education available to the local church.

During this coming year, the university will be looking for ways to strengthen the M.A. program. “We are looking at a variety of options now,” Rinderknecht says, “which will likely include expanded blended and online offerings, along with some revisions to the program to suit the needs of today’s lay ministers. We would be grateful for input from alumni and from others as to what needs there are, and how best to serve the local Church.”

Initiated in 1968 as an undergraduate certificate program and expanded in 1972 to the graduate level, the Pastoral Institute has consistently responded to the educational needs of individuals in or preparing for professional or volunteer ministries and service in the Church. While Roman Catholic in its orientation, the program is open to applicants from all denominational backgrounds. Graduates of the Pastoral Institute serve in a wide variety of settings including Catholic and religious education as wells as diocesan program administration.

ABB Optical Group and Paragon Vision Sciences award grant to RSO In July, UIW’s Rosenberg School of Optometry (RSO) was awarded an unrestricted educational grant of $5,000. Hosted

by ABB Optical Group, a wholesale optical distributor, and Paragon Vision Sciences, a manufacturer of oxygen permeable and ultra-specialty soft lenses, RSO won the first University Education Challenge, a program supporting aspiring optometrists. Eight optometry schools from across the country participated in the challenge.

The award was based on attendance and survey results of a webinar created by Amy Belloli-Conner, a third-year student and president of RSO’s Contact Lens Society. BelloliConner’s webinar focused on the importance of contact lens cleaning and compliance after physical activities such as color runs and waterslide adventures. Dr. Farshid Amir, RSO assistant professor, and Dr. William Miller, RSO professor and associate dean of academic affairs, oversaw Belloli-Conner’s efforts in participating in the challenge.

campus news UIW celebrates SEC with beam raising UIW celebrated reaching the highest point of construction of the Student Engagement Center (SEC) on Aug. 23 in the circle in front of Dubuis Hall. UIW students, faculty, staff and administrators were invited to sign the beam before it was raised in honor of the construction milestone.

The event included a blessing from Fr. Tom Dymowski, O.SS.T., UIW chaplain, as well as comments from Sr. Kathleen Coughlin, CCVI, vice president for institutional advancement, and Paul Ayala, director of campus engagement.

“The students were really the focus of this building from the beginning,” said Ayala during the event. “And their input was essential to the amenities that were included in the building.”

The SEC is slated for completion next summer.

UIW dedicates fencing center in memory of former faculty member On Sept. 16, UIW dedicated the Henrich Center for Fencing and International Sports located on the campus of St. Anthony Catholic High School. The center, which opened in 2013, was officially named in honor of Dr. Timothy Henrich, former professor of sports management and kinesiology who served as a UIW faculty member for 22 years. Henrich was instrumental in the vision and creation of the sports center. He passed away in October 2014.

The dedication ceremony included speakers Dr. Kathy Light, provost; Dr. William Carleton, professor and chair of kinesiology; and John Moreau, UIW head fencing coach; as well as a blessing from Sr. Kathleen Coughlin, CCVI, vice president for institutional advancement. The event concluded with a reception and a fencing demonstration by members of UIW’s fencing team.

UIW’s medical school begins student interviews Seventy-two candidates interviewed for UIW’s School of Osteopathic Medicine’s (SOM) inaugural class during the first weekend of interviews on Sept. 9-10. This included students from Texas and out-of-state applicants from as far as California, Maine, Maryland, Florida, Utah, and Georgia, among others. SOM faculty and administrators, main campus faculty, physicians, and community colleagues assisted with the interview process. An interview weekend was also held in October, with more dates scheduled in November, December, and the spring. A total of 700 candidates are anticipated to visit campus and interview

Baptist Health Foundation provides $97,000 for UIW scholarships

Join UIW on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 7:30 p.m. in Benson Stadium. Light the Way officially kicks off the holiday season in San Antonio. Enjoy an evening filled with heart-warming performances, all leading up to the flip of the switch, illuminating UIW’s campus with nearly a million twinkling lights.

In August, Cody Knowlton, president and CEO of Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio, presented UIW with a $97,000 check for scholarships. The Baptist Health Foundation provides scholarships for students enrolled in approved health professional programs, including Doctor of Physical Therapy, Doctor of Pharmacy, Traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN), Master of Science in Nursing, Doctor of Nursing Practice, Master of Nutrition, Doctor of Optometry, and Nuclear Medicine Science/ Technology (NMED), and who are permanent residents within the Baptist Health Foundation’s service area, including the counties of Atascosa, Bexar, Bandera, Comal, Guadalupe, Kendall, Medina, and Wilson.

UIW to open center in Strasbourg, France UIW and its European partner, CEPA Europe, are teaming up on an additional study abroad center in Europe. The European Study Center (ESC) in Strasbourg, France, is currently scheduled to open its doors for UIW students in Fall 2017. The center will be housed at the Château de Pourtalès, a 250-year-old castle nestled in a beautiful park near the Strasbourg city center. The ESC will offer students the opportunity to take a variety of courses that will count towards their selected degree plan. It will also offer students the unique opportunity of living in a city that is culturally rich and politically important, as the European Parliament and the Council of Europe are located in Strasbourg. At present, the International Affairs Department, in collaboration with UIW’s Provost Dr. Kathi Light and several academic deans, are finalizing which courses will be offered at the center that will capitalize European Study Center in Strasbourg, France. on the inherent resources of Strasbourg.

Small gifts make a big difference.

Employee Campaign helps ensure success of students.

hen it comes to giving, a shining example is set by the employees of the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW). For over 30 years, UIW employees have contributed to the Employee Campaign, helping to provide students a superlative education.

On average, more than 80 percent of employees participate in giving to the campaign each year, a unique testament to their devotion and pride in fulfilling the Mission of Incarnate Word.

“UIW’s Employee Campaign is very successful,” said Ana Bribiesca ’12 BA, development associate for the Development Office.

“Nationally our participation rate is above average.”

Based on a 2015 sample survey shared with the Development Office through CASE Fundraising Digest, UIW’s employee participation rate is well above the 50 percent average among universities Bribiesca speaks during the nationally.

Last year, the campaign raised more than $175,000, exceeding Development’s goal of $165,000, with an employee participation rate of 84 percent.

Bribiesca, who has coordinated the campaign for the last three years, said the goal this year was $165,000 with at least 85 percent participation.

Though the numbers are impressive, the initiative holds deeper meaning. “The campaign is a symbolic event that brings together our UIW family because faculty, staff and administrators unite to ensure a brighter future for the university,” explained Bribiesca.

“It’s important to give every year because the students need to be supported every year—especially since enrollment has increased almost every year for the past 30 years,” said Mary Jinks, library services, who has contributed to the campaign for over 25 consecutive years.

Bribiesca said employees’ gifts also help the university leverage support from corporations, foundations and other philanthropists.

Jon Gillespie, director of foundation, corporate, and government Gillespie attends the relations, agreed, stressing that kickoff. donors always want to know how much of a “buy-in” employees have for UIW programs, and the campaign is direct evidence of this commitment.

“As a fundraiser, I know it’s important to show outside donors that UIW employees provide direct support to the university,” said Gillespie, who has contributed for over 20 consecutive years himself.

Employees can designate gifts to the campaign for the area of their choice. Development suggests on each donation form designated areas including the annual fund, scholarship fund,

Cardinal athletics and campus beautification. However, every year there’s a focus, usually directed toward a sizeable university project or initiative.

In 2014, the focus was the Fine Arts Campaign. The Student Engagement Center has been the focus for 2015 and 2016, according to Bribiesca.

“I generally give to the capital campaigns to improve the infrastructure at UIW: the new Fine Arts Complex, the Student Engagement Center opening in 2017, the (Ila Faye) Miller School of Nursing, all the way back to the Mabee Library in the 1990s,” said Gillespie.

“I usually designate my gift to go to the area that is recommended by Development. If I don’t choose the recommended area, then I designate my gift for the library because we can always use new resources,” Jinks said.

Each year the campaign has a theme. Bribiesca said this year’s theme, “We Are UIW,” reflected how all employees are part of one family, working for the UIW Mission.

The campaign is indeed a collaborative effort as employees are divided into teams, mostly by department, with each team led by one to two captains who serve as liaisons between the Development Office and the teams.

Captains assist with handing out request letters, giveaways, collecting donation forms, and answering questions from team members.

Personalized request letters are created for each employee reminding them of the amount they donated in previous years. Employees are encouraged each year to participate in the next giving level. In addition, events are held to generate support, at which all raffle items are donated and local restaurants provide food at discounted rates to keep expenses to a minimum.

“We host a kickoff party to announce our goal, share any important details about the campaign and get everyone excited,” said Bribiesca. “We also host a finale where we announce the teams that achieved 100 percent participation, give out door prizes and do a raffle for the grand prize.”

“I like going to the campaign opening and closing because it’s a chance to visit with other coworkers I may not see in my usual workday,” said Gillespie. “Plus it’s always great to see the long list of contributors that circulates during the month-long campaign and see how many coworkers support the university’s Mission.”

The impact of these gifts, no matter the amount, are evident in the resources and facilities available to students.

Jinks said donating to the campaign helps employees to feel that besides doing their regular jobs that promote and facilitate the education of students, they are able to support UIW students even more by helping to fund a building or contributing to a scholarship.

“In the mid-90s, employees were encouraged to designate their campaign gifts to support the renovation and expansion of the library,” said Jinks. “I see students using technology, studying, and doing research every day in a facility that the Employee Campaign helped to become a reality.”

“New buildings and equipment help to recruit students to our university, and faculty appreciate having up-to-date teaching resources,” said Gillespie.

“Just taking a tour through the new music building, hearing students in the numerous practice rooms, shows how our campaign dollars make a difference.”

UIW has been recognized as a “Great College to Work For” by the Chronicle of Higher Education for eight consecutive years and a “Top 10 Workplace in San Antonio” by the San Antonio Express-News for five consecutive years. For Bribiesca, these distinctions exemplify how UIW is truly a special place.

“The work we do, the time we give, the students we inspire, and our commitment to the UIW Mission continue to produce outstanding results,” said Bribiesca.

If These Walls Could Talk Alumna works to restore the past

hile restoring some of San Antonio’s historical homes, San Juanita Preciado ’95 BA has found that the skeletons of the centuries-old structures offer momentary glimpses of yesteryear.

“The walls start to talk to you,” she said.

Recollecting the work on a home in the Dignowity Hill Historic District on the city’s East Side, the interior designer was demolishing a 13-foot by 11-foot wall and found the markings of the lumber company that provided the materials to construct the home, as well as its phone number.

“It was 3132. Phone numbers were only four digits back then,” Preciado said. “Then at 511 Lamar, we went up into the attic and found vintage wallpaper, old publications (Wide World Magazine 1904 and Pearson’s Magazine 1902) and vehicle license plates.”

As owner of A Total Domain, Preciado provides her more than 20 years of experience in the remodeling and design of residential and commercial projects, overseeing them from concept to completion.

Now, with the success of her interior design company, the San Antonio native is paying it forward. Since 2000, Preciado has offered internships for UIW students majoring in the field and has hired them on occasion as subcontractors for remodeling projects.

“I have them shadow me,” she said. “They do research, accompany me to appointments and to job sites. Internships allow you to gain hands-on experience to prepare you for a career in this industry. You’re able to apply what you learned in the classroom to working as an interior designer outside of college although you never stop learning. There is always something new to learn with each project.”

Nataly Gutierrez ’14 BA, who is a UIW campus engagement coordinator and is working on her M.B.A. at UIW, interned with Preciado for about a year in 2014. “It’s definitely never boring,” she said. “I learned a lot from my textbooks, but when you’re in the field with a mentor, you learn so much more.”

Preciado credits her two mentors, retired UIW professors emeriti of interior design, Judy Broughton and John Lodek, for helping her find her footing as she was developing her business. “I had so many questions,” she said. “For instance, how do I structure my contracts? What is the hourly rate for interior designers? Their guidance was instrumental because they both have been in the field as independent interior designers as well.”

Initially, Preciado planned to pursue a degree in computer science, but the thought of sitting behind a desk all day, as she did for 10 years as a clerk in the Environmental Department for CPS Energy, made her think twice. As a 32-year-old, single mother, she left the utility company to become a full-time student at UIW, where she was a work study in the ceramics studio. Later, while still taking classes, she worked for Ray Ellison Homes, helping clients choose interior and exterior materials and finishing for their new homes.

After graduation, she launched Interiors by San Juanita, and then in 2005 she incorporated her business as A Total Domain.

Eight years ago, she was hired to work on her first historical home at 106 Gramercy in Monte Vista Historical District. The second

Preciado restored it to a single-family home. The project proved to be both a pleasure and a challenge.

“I had to go to the Review Board. There were two front doors.

Which one do I close off? Does it become a wall or a window?”

Preciado said. “I had to modify the exterior porch, sit with the planners to draw up the plans and submit those to the board.

There are a lot of regulations you have to follow working in a historical district.”

She is struck by the remarkable craftsmanship of the historical homes she restores. “The construction back then was phenomenal,” the interior designer said. “The construction workers and laborers prided themselves on what they did, and you can see that. They were artisans. You can see this in the details in the crown moldings, for instance.”

And there’s no greater satisfaction than restoring dilapidated homes to their former glory and bringing them back to life in such a way that leaves owners speechless.

“It’s rewarding to know that these houses will stand for another 100 years. I’m humbled,” Preciado said.

Master of Biomedical Science offering students new opportunities at UIW

E

milee Bell recalls a patient experience at Boston Children’s Hospital that solidified her goal to become a doctor one day.

“A young girl with an eating disorder came in.

She was slumped next to her mother, while her dad sat across from the physician and me. The dad recounted how her symptoms and emotional state had severely worsened after leaving an inpatient facility,” she said.

Bell recalled how their desperation made a lasting impact.

“I saw how valuable physicians are as a source of relief and knowledge for families in pain. That memory motivates me to become a physician, to be the dependable hope that comforts and provides healing for people in their most vulnerable moments,” she added.

After receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Neuroscience at Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, N.Y., she moved to Boston for a job as a research assistant in the Psychiatry Department at Boston Children’s Hospital. She was not accepted to any of the medical schools she had applied to, so she had to rethink her plan. Today, Bell is a member of the inaugural class of the Master of Biomedical Science (M.B.S.) program at UIW. “I’m able to work towards a master’s degree in one year, while I re-apply to medical school.

We’re getting firsthand clinical experience, since we’re training to become EMTs. We have a full anatomy lab where we can learn from the real human body, rather than pictures alone,” she said.

A full-time one-year program, the M.B.S. curriculum integrates graduate-level biomedical science coursework, research exposure and early clinical experiences. Its multidisciplinary course of study is designed to bolster student’s competitiveness for medical school and other related pursuits in health care.

Program Director Dr. Pangela Dawson noted that historically, programs like this were created as post-baccalaureate certification programs solely for students who had previously applied to medical school. However, the M.B.S. is also excellent for students pursuing a variety of health care degrees, including those awaiting the opening of the university’s School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) next fall.

“It also prepares students for their degrees in physical therapy, optometry and other careers in the health care profession and medical sciences,” Dawson said.

“Our program is unique because we focus on giving the students a broader look at health care, with a stronger background in graduate level courses in health and research. The most unique aspect is the foundational patient care exposure.

Most programs today are looking for students with exposure to hands-on patient care,” she added.

Ste’Von Voice grew up in Terrell, Texas, imagining he would someday become a musical entertainer. But now he sees his true calling to become a forensic pathologist. UIW’s M.B.S. program will help him achieve his goal.

Before coming to UIW, Voice worked in forensic pathology, doing autopsies for the medical examiner’s office at Southwestern Institute for Forensic Sciences in Dallas.

“The experience of completing over 2,000 autopsies led me to my pursuit of becoming a physician. I believe individuals could be more self aware in regards to progressive or damaging lifestyle

choices. Choices such as the company you keep, nutrition, and honesty with yourself and others. These few things can be a start to preventing a premature death that’s within your own control,” he noted.

Voice added the M.B.S. has been a perfect fit for him.

“I enjoy the unity between classmates within the program and how that is encouraged by our academic faculty,” he said.

Though enrollment is set at 50, a small percentage is accepted over that amount. Dawson said the program currently has 53 students enrolled and there is already much interest in the next admissions cycle.

“It’s a master’s program in one year, which is intense, but the students are grateful for supportive faculty and staff. Students understand this program will prep them for the next level, perhaps dental school, medical school or becoming a physician’s assistant,” she added.

“I think this program really spotlights what the university is all about. I’m proud of the fact we are preparing our future workforce for much needed professional jobs in San Antonio and and beyond,” she said.

Both Bell and Voice have applied to UIW’s osteopathic medical school and are determined to become physicians someday.

“Getting into medical school is not meant to be easy,” acknowledged Bell. “We don’t want just anyone performing open heart surgery on us or our loved ones. It takes hard work and determination, so when I had to sit for the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test) a second time, I understood it was simply what I had to do to achieve my goal. I studied more and did it.

The first time a patient says ‘Thank you Dr. Bell, what you did has really helped me,’ will be the day that makes it all worth it.”

The Healing Touch

UIW SoPT Community Clinic offers opportunity to students and community alike

efore the UIW School of Physical Therapy (SoPT) had even been built, the school’s Founding Dean Dr. Caroline Goulet had a vision. She sought out to host a clinic through the SoPT, where students would provide care for free or at a low cost to citizens in the community who might not otherwise be able to receive necessary physical therapy.

“It may have been my vision, but it took a village to make it a reality,” Goulet shared. “I am extremely proud of what my faculty have accomplished in a relatively short period of time. I take immense pride and joy at observing the students interact with their clients at the clinic.”

The SoPT Community Clinic, operated in a shared location with Texas Physical Therapy Specialists, opened its doors in January and Dr. Amy Crocker in the SoPT has provided care to Community Clinic.

more than 170 patients. Overseen by Dr. Amy Crocker, assistant professor and director of social accountability and experiential learning, students in the Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program provide physical therapy care under the direction of licensed PT faculty.

“From my experience, I strongly believe that students learn by doing, and having a community clinic to practice in allows our students not only to apply their skills and knowledge but to act and feel like health care professionals,” Goulet said.

The SoPT Community Clinic works with individuals age 13 and older who are not eligible for Medicare benefits. “We serve the uninsured, as well as those who do not have physical therapy benefits as part of their health insurance coverage, have exhausted their yearly benefit, or are underinsured,” Crocker explained.

Crocker shared that the patients of the Community Clinic have thoroughly enjoyed working with SoPT students and are grateful for the services they are able to experience.

In addition to offering the community the opportunity for high-quality care at little to no cost, the clinic also provides students with hands-on clinical experience and the ability to truly apply what they have learned in the classroom.

for faculty to observe students’ hands-on skills, as well as their interactions with patients and they are able to provide meaningful feedback,” Crocker said.

Katherine Crocker, a student in the UIW DPT program who shares no relation to Dr. Amy Crocker, explains that while faculty allow students to rely on their own knowledge, they step in when students need assistance in clinical reasoning, or to help guide when considering a treatment plan for their patients. She said working alongside faculty has been a privilege.

“It is one thing being taught by our professors in a classroom, but learning is amplified while in clinic alongside the faculty,” she shared. “The professors know our capabilities and push us to our fullest potential every moment during our shift.”

DPT student James Patrick Cerutti said working in the clinic is what he enjoys most about the program as it is directly applicable to his future goals of working in an outpatient facility.

“Giving us early time with patients is so important to building our confidence when interacting with them,” Cerutti shared.

“Every time we treat patients we must earn their trust, and an early start is good for a skill that requires life-long learning.”

While working alongside the UIW faculty is vital to the success of the clinic, students find working with their peers is beneficial as well.

“It helps us practice our collaborative skills,” Katherine said.

“It is exciting and encouraging observing your fellow classmates, and yourself, improve over the course of time in the clinic – it is a gratifying and humbling experience.”

Crocker explained having students provide such a needed service to the City of San Antonio does more than simply help promote community engagement and social accountability. “We hope that working with underserved populations while in school will increase the likelihood that students will choose to work with

similar populations following graduation,” she said.

From a student perspective, Katherine feels working at the SoPT Community Clinic is unquestionably unique and allows for progressive student learning in a safe space with familiar faces.

“The clinic is open to the public and the patients who utilize its services come from every walk of life with challenging and interesting pathologies for us to confront,” she explained. “Not only does this diversity of patient care help me and other Goulet with a PT graduate in 2015. student physical therapists utilize present learning, but it opens our eyes to different types of patient populations we might want to engage with and treat once graduated and licensed to practice physical therapy.”

Katherine shared that, as students, they serve the public – their patients – to the best of their abilities because it is their mission, not just as UIW students but as future health care professionals.

“We pledge to provide the best health care we possibly can for others by building upon the educational foundation and professional development encouraged and cultivated at UIW,” she explained. “I can say without reservation that the clinic is an amazing way for UIW to reach out to the community based upon UIW’s Mission of serving others as Christ served us.”

The Honors Program Goes

INTERNATIONAL

I

t has long been a goal of the UIW’s Honors Program to hold honors classes overseas at the European Study Center (ESC) in Heidelberg, Germany. This summer, that goal came to be as professors and five honors students traveled to this beautiful site for intense study and to engage in service at nonprofit organizations.

“Students who signed up for this class were committed to it as part of a living experience,” said Dr. Hector Perez, associate professor of English. “There was no need for formal office hours.

Class discussions flowed more easily because of this enhanced rapport.”

Dr. Glenn Ambrose, associate professor of religious studies, said the environment “truly created a learning community”: “My course simply would not have been the same had it been taught

on the UIW main campus.”

The students echoed this sentiment, reporting how they connected the region’s historical sites with classroom study, bringing deeper meaning to their learning. Sophomore Clarisa Salinas said she became more sensitized after visiting the Natzweiler-Struthoff concentration camp. “I have a new appreciation for what happened,” Salinas said.

Both Ambrose and Perez developed customized approaches to take advantage of the particular resources in the Heidelberg region. Perez chose to incorporate into class a work based on historical fact, Art Spiegelman’s graphic novel “Maus,” reflecting on the Holocaust. Ambrose developed a new course, “Christianity and Global Justice,” for the ESC. Beyond the courses, students endeavored to get involved in

the new culture as citizens and not just tourists. Senior Cassidy Fritts researched the Heidelberg area prior to the trip to develop service opportunities for students while studying abroad.

The result of Fritts’ efforts was two-fold. First, she and other students volunteered at two local organizations, Deutsch-Amerikanisches Institut (DAI) and AEGEE. DAI promotes English language learning and education and is involved with helping refugees learn German and English. There, Fritts found herself working with teenagers, preparing them for a public workshop for a local farmers’ market. AEGEE is a European student union with chapters at universities throughout Europe to promote a democratic, diverse and borderless Europe. The group had just started brainstorming how to reach out to the refugee community, so Fritts was able to connect AEGEE students to DAI Heidelberg to help them coordinate future events with refugees.

Second, Fritts built a bridge for future ESC students to add community service to their study abroad experiences. The ESC program director, Marketa Lepicovsky, followed up on these connections and met with each group individually, inviting AEGEE to hold their meetings at the ESC and offering DAI the possibility of an intern from among students studying at the center. These relationships are anticipated to continue long into the future.

The Honors Program was able to attract students for the summer semester, partly because of the program’s new study abroad scholarship, initiated by students. Three of the five attendees were recipients of the inaugural offer.

Two years ago, then junior Erica Cioti ’16 BS was inspired by a fundraiser she watched grow in her hometown and thought Honors could duplicate it to raise money for a study abroad scholarship. Thus, the Pumpkin Patch was born in Fall 2014 as an addition to the popular Trunk or Treat event that the Alumni and Parent Relations Office sponsors at Halloween each year. The team of student volunteers offered a variety of activities for attending families at a nominal fee, including a ball toss, soccer goals, and pumpkin painting. Students are determined to keep the event evolving in its activities and growing in revenues each year. The Honors Program will also add the proceeds of their annual Arts & Music Festival to the scholarship fund. The festival is an official homecoming event that celebrates UIW’s artistic community.

“We are very pleased that we now have this study abroad scholarship to offer our students,” said Jean Loden, Honors Program di-

rector. “Study abroad has been one of those experiences that we would like all our students to have, but it is often out of reach financially. It is indicative of the caliber and curiosity of our students that they are the ones who found a way to make this scholarship happen.”

Certainly, the honors students enjoyed their experience at the ESC and have been encouraging peers to have their own international experiences. In addition to intellectual growth, the students identified (L-R) Students Davis, Salinas and Fritts growth in their sense at Heidelberg University’s administration of independence and building. self-confidence by navigating the many aspects of everyday life in a foreign country.

“I learned a lot about myself and how to manage the myriad of emotions that come up when I am unsure of my situation,” said Salinas. “I’ve learned to trust my instincts.” An important lesson for our future community leaders and citizens of the world.

The next phase for the Honors Program internationally is a 12-day faculty-led trip aligned with the honors course, Seminar on Social and Political Thought, beginning in 2017 and continuing in odd-numbered years. A shorter option like this can provide busy honors students, often squeezing internships and research fellowships into the summer months, a viable opportunity to enjoy a life-enhancing experience in a different culture.

Wick and Tavarres UIW’s first to sign with NFL In April, UIW’s budding football program celebrated the first players in its history to be drafted into the National Football League (NFL). Former Cardinal tight end Cole Wick ’16 BS and linebacker Myke Tavarres ’16 BA each signed free agent contracts with NFL teams. Wick signed with the Detroit Lions while Tavarres signed with the Philadelphia Eagles.

Wick played as a four-year member of the Cardinals and a three-year starter. He was an honorable mention all-conference pick as a junior and earned first team honors in 2015.

Tavarres was with UIW’s program for two years and set school records for single season tackles, tackles for loss and sacks in 2015.

Gerdin named Synchronized Swimming interim head coach Elizabeth Gerdin ’12 BA, after serving as UIW’s Synchronized Swimming assistant coach for the past two years, has been named the interim head coach for the 2016-17 season. She played a key role in the program achieving a pair of top four national finishes and two regional titles as the assistant coach under former head coach Megan Deatherage. Gerdin is a former UIW synchro student-athlete who last competed in 2011. She graduated in 2012 from UIW with a Bachelor of Science double major in athletic training and rehabilitative sciences.

A Minnesota native, Gerdin competed at the FINA World Trophy Cup in 2009. As a Cardinal, she helped the team achieve a national third place finish and numerous regional championships. She was named Rookie of the Year, earned the Dwyer award for encompassing team values, and was the squad’s team captain for two seasons.

Tavarres was included on the College Football Player Awards (CFPA) FCS Linebacker of the Year Award watch list and the STATS FCS Defensive Player of the Year watch list. He was awarded the Southland Conference Newcomer of the Year award and earned First Team All-Conference honors as well as a three-time All-American honors by STATS, the Associated Press and the American Football Coaches Association.

In 2015, Wick and Tavarres helped lead the Cardinals to a fourth place finish in the Southland Conference.

Jordan

Jordan competes in U.S. Open Austin Jordan ’15 BBA, former UIW men’s golfer, qualified for and competed in the 2016 U.S. Open by firing a 7-under par score over 36 holes in the Houston Sectional at Lakeside Country Club in June. Jordan qualified for the Houston Sectional thanks to his play at the local qualifying tournament played at Hurricane Creek Golf Course just north of Dallas.

The sectional included 51 players and only the top three advanced to the U.S. Open played at Oakmont Country Club in Oakmont, Pa., on June 16.

Jordan finished with a score of 84 at the competition.

Jordan holds the school records for lowest career scoring average (74.36) and single season scoring average (72.54) during his senior year. He won three tournaments in his college career. He earned second team All-Lone Star Conference and first team CoSIDA Academic All-District VI honors as a sophomore when he was also the Lone Star Academic Player of the Year while leading the team to the NCAA Division II Regional Tournament.

He took home honorable mention All-Southland Conference honors as a junior and second team honors as a senior. During his senior year, he finished as the runner-up or one shot out of first place in each of his first six tournaments.

1970s Joe Pickard ’77 BBA has been a practicing lawyer in Littleton, Colo., since 1982. He is now one of the partners in a four lawyer trial law firm. Their newest associate attorney is his son, Jay. Three years ago they converted an abandoned Applebee’s restaurant and repurposed it as a law building. The new law building also serves as a meeting place for the board of a local community church, and is the physical home of a nonprofit organization, The Turelli Foundation, which Pickard co-founded to assist divorcing couples on a pro bono basis.

1980s Donald Ewers ’80 BA ’85 MA received the 2016 San Antonio River Authority Watershed Wise Award for volunteer service as a master naturalist at the Inaugural SARA Watershed Wise Awards presentation on June 9, 2016. Ewers is an active member of the Alamo Area Master Naturalist chapter and is vice president of the San Antonio chapter of the Native Plant Society of Texas.

She was a member of the Steering Committee to revise the Code of Ethics (2015) and a member of the American Nurses Association (ANA) Ethics Advisory Board and editorial advisory board of the Online Journal of Issues in Nursing. Robichaux is editor of a book to be published by Springer, “Ethical Competence in Nursing Practice” (2017).

Dr. Robert Connelly, professor emeritus of philosophy and a beloved member of the UIW community for over 45 years, passed away on Sept. 27. Connelly, in addition to teaching philosophy for over 30 years, served in many capacities at Incarnate Word, including as assistant to the associate provost, the dean of the College of Math, Science and Engineering (MSE), the assistant director and director of assessment, and the dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences (CHASS). In addition to his titled positions, Connelly assisted in the founding of the Ettling Center for Civic Leadership, established the university’s strategic goal for sustainability, maintained the Faculty Handbook, and helped develop the Headwaters at Incarnate Word. Because of his commitment to numerous initiatives at UIW, the university created in 2009 The Robert J. Connelly Faculty Leadership Award to honor a professor who serves as a model leader of the faculty.

“In my heart, the thing that’s always been the most rewarding is the classroom experience,” Connelly shared in the Fall 2015 issue of The Word. His legacy and his dedication to Incarnate Word will forever be cherished.

Kathy Vargas, associate professor of art, was among three San Antonio artists to donate to the Archives of American Art at the Smithsonian Institute research center. Founded in 1954, the archive collects and preserves papers of significant artists, dealers, collectors and other members of the art industry along with museum, gallery, school and association records. Items included in the archives consist of correspondence, photographs, sketchbooks, diaries, receipts for purchases of materials, among other treasures.

Vargas donated 10 boxes of archived material including correspondence with internationally renowned writer and art critic Lucy Lippard.

Dr. Trinidad Macias is the new sponsored projects coordinator in the Office of Research Development. Her responsibilities will include managing internal funding programs for faculty and students, developing and implementing research engagement activities, and providing assistance to faculty engaged in sponsored research. Macias earned her Doctorate of Philosophy in Education with a concentration in International Education and Entrepreneurship from UIW. She received her Bachelor of Arts in International Relations from St. Edward’s University and her Master of Arts in International Politics from the University of Texas at San Antonio. Macias is a Ronald E. McNair Scholar Alumni, a Sr. Dorothy Ettling Future Female Leader Scholarship recipient, a member of the Golden Key International Honor Society, and a member of the National Society for Leadership and Success.

Her research interests include cultural competency, triple helix theory, and international student experiences.

Dr. Dick McCracken, dean of alumni emeritus, was honored with a plaque for his contribution to education at the 50th Anniversary of the Harp and Shamrock Society of Texas Celebration held at Anne Marie’s Catering on Sept. 17. The Harp and Shamrock Society of Texas is an organization furthering the culture and traditions of the Irish in San Antonio.

In December, UIW will bid a fond farewell to Feik School of Pharmacy (FSOP) Founding Dean Dr. Arcelia Johnson-Fannin as she retires after 12 years with the university. Appointed in July 2004, she oversaw the development and implementation of the pharmacy school, which graduated its inaugural class in 2010. Under her direction, FSOP earned continued accreditation in the spring from the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education; this accreditation status will continue through the 2023-2024 academic year, the longest period accreditation can be granted. During her tenure, FSOP has received the Distinguished Service Award by the H-E-B Pharmacy and the 2016 Inaugural Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award, among others. Johnson-Fannin has been elected to the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame (Higher Education); named an Aetna African American History Calendar Honoree; named an American Pharmacists 50 Most Influential Pharmacist; listed as a Who’s Who in Black San Antonio, Executives and Professionals, and Among Professional Women, among many other distinctions.

Dr. Gerald Mulvey, assistant professor of meteorology, visited his home university and alma mater, Colorado State University (CSU), where he was able to procure an indefinite loan of a Bigg-Warner expansion chamber used for counting ice nuclei, a key particulate in the formation of ice crystals and snow.

The instrument will be used in two courses, Meteorological Instrumentation and Precipitation Physics and Weather Modification.

Dr. Richard Sharp, assistant professor of optometry, spoke to the students of the Rosenberg School of Optometry (RSO) about his private practice, Sharp Eye Consultants, in April.

Sharp Eye Consultants provide complete eye examinations with a primary focus on providing care for those who have eye diseases or systemic diseases that can affect the eye including diabetes and hypertension.

Sharp teaches diagnosing and management of glaucoma at RSO and provides an externship for students in their fourth year.

Dr. Amy Wagner, assistant professor of physical therapy, had “The Effect of Footwear on Joint Pain and Function in Older Adults with Lower Extremity Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review” published in the “Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy.”

Dr. Alberto Rubio-Sanchez, associate professor of marketing, was recognized by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics as an outstanding Latino professor.

The recognition was part of the U.S. Department of Education’s National Hispanic Serving Institutions Week.

During Sept. 19-23, the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics recognized Hispanic professors nationwide. With the #LatinosTeach online campaign, the initiative demonstrates that, while underrepresented, Hispanics are dedicating themselves to serving their community through teaching. A former Fulbright Scholar, Rubio-Sanchez has served as the Hispanic Marketing Institute director and Marketing Department coordinator. During his time at UIW, he has received three nominations for the Presidential Teaching Award, the highest honor conferred to faculty at the university.

The new Student Engagement Center (SEC) is a 124,000 sq. ft. facility that will be an expanded, studentrun community space in the center of the UIW campus with an anticipated completion date of June 2017. The SEC will host a variety of groups and activities including student organizations, meetings, events, intramural and other co-curricular activities. It will serve as a “one-stop” center for virtual access using appropriate technologies and points of contact for the Registrar, Business Office, Financial Aid, First-Year Engagement, Student Success offices, expanded and modernized dining facilities and other key student services.
