Dear Friends: Welcome to the 2015 donor’s issue of The Word. This is our way of thanking the many people from around the world that contribute to the continued betterment of the University of the Incarnate Word.

Our plans for the new School of Osteopathic Medicine got a big boost in September when it received pre-accreditation status from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA). The school’s team is now preparing to submit documents to COCA next spring for provisional accreditation, which is required in order to recruit students.

We’re grateful to all who worked very hard to reach this important milestone, including School of Osteopathic Medicine Founding Dean Dr. Robyn Madson and her team. Their efforts are keeping us on track to open the school at Brooks City Base in 2017.

Our new campus in Irapuato, Mexico - Universidad de Incarnate Word Bajio Campus - opened in grand style with a gala attended by 400 guests. The attendees included a who’s who from education, government, industry and religious life throughout the Guanajuato region. One of the more unforgettable images of the evening was the arrival by helicopter of Guanajuato Governor Miguel Márquez Márquez, who was swarmed upon landing by the dozens of media members covering the event.

For the first time in our long history, our global enrollment has surpassed the 10,000-mark, as UIW now has 10,984 students at all of our campuses. The students represent 69 countries, with the top five in terms of numbers being Saudi Arabia, Mexico, China, South Korea and Canada.

Let me take this opportunity to thank Betty and Bob Kelso for their generosity in making the Kelso Art Center a reality.

The Kelsos have long supported Incarnate Word through their service on the board of trustees and their generous gifts to the university. The family’s connection to our community goes back to 1926, when Betty’s mother, Elizabeth Huth Coates Maddux, graduated from Incarnate Word High School. She subsequently made several significant gifts to Incarnate Word College, including funding for the Coates Theater and the restoration of the Brackenridge Villa.

The Kelsos have followed in her footsteps by also making a number of important gifts to UIW over the course of many years, the latest being the Kelso Art Center, which is located in the Fine Arts Complex.

Adorning the front of the Fine Arts Complex is a beautiful and unique mural - the “Source of Life” – which was designed and created by local artist Cakky Brawley. It explores various aspects of light and water and their connection to our physical and spiritual lives. Let me also express my appreciation to the Russell Hill Rogers Fund for the Arts for donating and making the mural possible.

I encourage you to read the rest of The Word for additional details on the many exciting things that are happening at UIW, including the new home for our Professional Golf Management program at the Republic Golf Course.

As you do, please remember the momentum generated by your generous support is what allows us to continue fulfilling our goal of offering students top-notch educational opportunities within a context of faith. UIW selected to receive funding for TRiO

HEBSBA students assist with this year’s Big Give San Antonio.

UIW business students lend a hand to The Big Give San Antonio For the second consecutive year, students from the H-E-B School of Business & Administration (HEBSBA) played a major role in helping The Big Give reach its fundraising goal. The Big Give San Antonio, an annual 24-hour citywide philanthropic marathon, raised $4.3 million for local nonprofit organizations this year. The Big Give attracted 882 nonprofits in its second year.

In partnership with the San Antonio Nonprofit Council, the HEBSBA’s pioneering Capstone course took on the responsibility of The Big Give’s social media presence. To prepare for the event, students conducted market research producing analyses of online donor demographics, determining best practices for each platform, and creating viable implementation strategies. Students spent the semester creating digital buzz for the upcoming event by putting together online contests and stirring synergy by reaching out to brand ambassadors in the community. In 2014, the inaugural year for The Big Give San Antonio, Capstone students assisted more than 467 nonprofits raise over $2 million in donations, double the initial goal set by the fundraiser.

“This is more than just a group project, you’re working directly with clients,” said management information systems major Michelle Hershel.

“Through partnerships with area organizations, Capstone allows students to take knowledge gained in the classroom and apply it to solve real-world problems.”

The University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) is proud to announce that the TRiO Student Support Services Program was recently awarded $235,059 by the Department of Education. The grant will be for a total of $1,175,295 over a five year-period and will allow the program to implement new initiatives to assist UIW’s first generation, low-income students as well as students with disabilities in achieving their graduation goals.

“TRiO Student Support Services is a wonderful program and an excellent fit for UIW. We are so excited for the opportunities this new grant will create for our students,” said Sandy McMakin, dean of student success.

The TRiO Student Success Program (SSP) is a federally funded program providing intensive academic preparation and support services such as tutoring, peer mentoring, tuition scholarships, study sessions, university success seminars, personal counseling and cultural activities; graduation and retention are the outcomes of such services.

Committed to the full development of UIW students, the Division of Student Success welcomes new students and guides them through their educational experience to graduation. Programs are free and help incoming students make a successful transition to the university.

UIW’s Meet the Mission celebrates 10 years of service Organized and sponsored by the Office of Mission and Ministry, under the leadership of Sr. Walter Maher, CCVI, Meet the Mission was held on Sept. 18. This year marked the 10th anniversary of UIW’s first Meet the Mission Day, founded by former Professor Harold Rodinsky.

On the day of the event, UIW students and employees engaged the greater San Antonio community with service to nearly 30 organizations, such as the Salvation Army, Animal Defense League, The Village at Incarnate Word, the Headwaters at Incarnate Word, and the Boys and Girls Club, among others.

Since its origin, the event has grown in participation to over 200 members of the UIW community deployed to over 20 community partner sites to perform service projects on a single day. This year, the 10th annual Meet the Mission commemorated Rodinsky’s establishment of the annual day of service.

HEBSBA celebrates grand opening of Golf Management Facility The H-E-B School of Business & Administration (HEBSBA) celebrated a grand opening of the Professional Golf Management (PGM) facility on Oct. 19, located adjacent to the Republic Golf Club. The event was attended by the local golf community, including high school golf team coaches, San Antonio golf club owners, and prominent recreational golfers in the area.

Guest speakers included Dr. Forrest Aven, dean of HEBSBA; Brian Graybeal, director of UIW’s Professional Golf Management Program (PGM); John Williams, UIW athletic director; Michael Weiland, vice president of operations for Foresight Golf; and Dr. Louis J. Agnese, Jr., UIW president.

The 13,000 square foot facility is home to the PGM program and the men’s and women’s NCAA Division I golf teams. The facility features state-of-the-art training facilities for UIW’s golf teams, a specially designed putting green, four contemporary classrooms and offices.

The PGM program is designed to prepare graduates to integrate their education and training into the golf management industry.

Bowden elevated to Holy Woman in Episcopal Church Artemisia Bowden, the namesake of the University of the Incarnate Word’s (UIW) Bowden Eye Care and Health Center serving San Antonio’s Eastside, has been elevated to the standing of a Holy Woman in the Episcopal Church.

Bowden, a local civic leader and pioneer for education who served as president of St. Phillip’s College for 52 years, is the first individual from the Diocese of West Texas to earn this distinction. Bowden’s feast Artemisia Bowden day is Aug. 18.

During the summer, the 78th General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Salt Lake City, Utah, authorized adding Bowden’s name to the liturgical calendar in “Holy Women, Holy Men: Celebrating the Saints.” In the Episcopal Church, individuals selected are called Holy Women or Holy Men, similar to saints in the Catholic Church. In recognition of Bowden’s new status in the Episcopal Church, a celebration is planned for Nov. 20 at St. Philip’s College.

During the Great Depression, Bowden campaigned to have St. Phillip’s College incorporated into San Antonio Independent School District’s (SAISD) junior college system, virtually saving the school in the midst of tremendous hardship. She served as president of the San Antonio Metropolitan Council of Negro Women and was the founder and president of the city’s Negro Business and Professional Women’s Club. Bowden was named to the Texas Commission on Interracial Relations in 1947. The National Council of Negro Women cited her as one of the 10 most outstanding women educators in the U.S.

The UIW community gathered together on Aug. 3 in Our Lady’s Chapel for a special Mass honoring Dr. Louis Agnese’s 30th anniversary as president of the university.

Agnese arrived on the Incarnate Word campus in August 1985. At that time, what was then Incarnate Word College offered 56 majors with an enrollment under 1,300.

Today, UIW offers 80 academic programs including doctoral and professional programs serving nearly 11,000 students.

UIW’s European Study Center recognized by College Magazine and Abroad101 College Magazine recently ranked the European Study Center (ESC), UIW’s campus located in Heidelberg, Germany, No. 2 for 10 Best Places to Study Abroad in 2014. The list was based on interviews with students and program leaders to determine the ten best places worldwide according to safety, cost, prestige, social scene and cultural barriers. This recognition follows Abroad101.com’s ranking of the ESC as one of The Top 10+ Programs and Top 10 Program Providers in 2013. Since opening in Fall 2012, 376 students have attended the study center. ESC students can choose between a four month semester or a two month summer program. All courses are taught in English and are offered in a range of subjects, including European business, international relations, law and European studies. Internships as well as intensive German language courses are also available.

UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine receives pre-accreditation from COCA The University of the Incarnate Word’s (UIW) School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) has attained an important milestone, pre-accreditation from the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA).

Pre-accreditation is the initial recognition status awarded by COCA; it is an integral step towards UIW’s goal of establishing a School of Osteopathic Medicine (SOM) by providing physicians to serve the growing communities of San Antonio and South Texas.

The SOM team is now preparing for the next step in this process. Provisional accreditation is required in order to recruit students. The anticipated start date for the inaugural class is the summer of 2017.

“Building a new medical school requires sustained commitment and dedication on the part of so many, and we’re very grateful for our partners in this endeavor. We’re confident that the development of this osteopathic medical school will result in many positive outcomes, and will constructively impact the health of the communities we serve for generations to come,” said SOM Founding Dean Dr. Robyn Madson.

In addition, city and business leaders gathered on July 30 to celebrate a new $9.1 million road construction project at Brooks City

Base, future home of the UIW School of Osteopathic Medicine.

The project will widen and upgrade Dale Erwin Drive, helping to accommodate those attending UIW’s medical school. Rebecca Viagran, District 3 city councilwoman, led the groundbreaking for the roadway, which will be renamed Kennedy Hill in honor of President John F. Kennedy. In his last official act as president, Kennedy dedicated the buildings at Brooks City Base that will now be used by UIW. UIW was cited for excellence in eight of 12 possible categories, including Job Satisfaction, Collaborative Governance, and, for the first time, Work/Life Balance.

“A

rt is an extremely important part of one’s life. It’s food for the soul,” said Betty Stieren Kelso at her home in midtown San Antonio which resembles a museum with a vibrant, historical collection of artwork from all over the world.

Betty and her husband Lt. Col. Robert (Bob) E. Kelso (Ret.) have traveled the globe gathering artwork purely for the love, passion and appreciation of art; through their generosity, they hope to share this adoration with students of the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW).

The Kelsos made the single, largest donation toward the Fine Arts Complex in renovation of the art building, now the Kelso Art Center. The couple’s gift also established a permanent gallery, the Kelso Gallery, one of three in the center.

“The Kelsos have been long time friends and supporters,” said Sr. Kathleen Coughlin, CCVI, vice president for institutional advancement. “Dr. (Louis) Agnese and I approached Betty to support the endeavor since she has a great love for art. Betty and Bob love the Mission of UIW and what we are doing here.”

“To me it was the perfect place,” said Betty. “And being that

it’s our interest, we want others to enjoy our collection.”

For the Kelsos, their deep affinity for the arts is rooted in family legacy.

“Betty’s mother was an artist,” said Bob. “Her children, at least two of them are artists and at least two of her grandchildren are studying art at the university level.”

The Kelso family holds a rich, generational history with UIW as well as the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word. Elizabeth Huth Coates, Betty’s mother, graduated from Incarnate Word High School in 1926 and studied music at what was then Incarnate Word College. Coates made possible the theater building on campus that bears her name. She also assisted the Sisters by providing funding for restorations to the Chapel of the Incarnate Word.

Betty, a trustee emerita, served two terms as a member of the board of trustees and on the Institutional Advancement and Education Committees at UIW. The Kelso family has a legacy of philanthropy, especially in terms of the arts. Her mother’s Elizabeth Huth Coates Charitable Foundation, brother’s Arthur T. and Jane J. Stieren Foundation, and her own Betty Stieren Kelso Foundation hold a long history of supporting the San Antonio and South Texas communities. These foundations have benefited countless organizations, such as the McNay Art Museum, the Humane Society of San Antonio, the San Antonio Symphony, and the Texas Biomedical Research Institute, among others.

In fact, Betty serves on the board of the San Antonio Museum of Art (SAMA) and gifted the museum’s endowment of the Kelso Director of the San Antonio Museum of Art chair.

The couple, who received honorary doctorates from UIW in 2012, is also graciously donating and lending works of art to be exhibited in the gallery.

“The Kelsos are donating religious art, namely icons, paintings and Santos,” said Coughlin. “Some of the donated items are Mexican religious art pieces.”

“It’s a permanent gallery but we will have changing exhibits,” said Betty. “There will be some Texas art, American art, Spanish Colonial, and Russian icons.”

For the Kelsos, religious art is fitting for UIW’s faith-based environment.

“We are both Catholics and we appreciate the Church and all the art that reflects 2,000 years of history,” explained Bob. “Religion is such an important part of art and shows the spiritual side of life,” added Betty.

Bob said some of the items will be on loan to the gallery and others given as a gift, which is traditional in museums.

“It’s very important that all students have access to this art,” stressed Betty. “You can read about it, but when you see it, it makes a difference.”

The couple’s dedication to the arts translates into providing the resources and facilities needed for students to receive a superlative arts education, including new academic offerings.

Miguel Cortinas, associate professor and chair of the art department, said the additional space acquired during renovation has allowed for a print making studio now large enough for students to begin working with the techniques and processes associated with serigraphy or screen printing. The gallery space will afford students in art history classes to view works relevant to course topics and bring the local and regional community to UIW to experience works from the Kelso collection. allow for the presentation of larger exhibitions and regular showcasing of student artwork.

The addition of a digital photo lab helps to add complimentary sections to digital photography courses and a photo lighting studio affords the program to bolster the addition of courses in lighting and portrait photography.

“We will be adding a photo design course as a regular offering and we are working on a BFA in photography,” said Kathy Vargas, associate professor and former chair of art.

As part of the Kelso Art Center, a mural, donated by the Russell Hill Rogers Fund for the Arts, was installed on the front of the building in September to accentuate its aesthetics and reflect the Mission of the university.

“The idea for the mural was to enhance our location at the corner of Broadway and Hildebrand related to the arts,” said Coughlin. “It also serves as a public art piece for the City of San Antonio.”

An internal committee was formed and a Request for Proposal (RFP) was mailed to 25 local artists plus UIW alumni. “We wanted to showcase and support local artists and thus only invited San Antonio artists to submit,” explained Coughlin.

Coughlin said ten artists submitted proposals and three were chosen to interpret the designated theme, which was to reflect UIW’s values, spirituality, and location at the headwaters of the San Antonio River.

“The mural explores variations on the literal, spiritual and symbolic aspects of light and water,” said Cakky

Brawley, the artist chosen to create the mural, who serves as faculty at Palo Alto College. “Just as Jesus is the light of the world and source of living water, light and water are essential for all facets of life, physical and spiritual.”

Brawley said, using the natural landscape of UIW’s campus as a foundation, the mural’s scene offers a moment for reflection.

The mural, “Source of Life,” is a 40 x 20 foot aluminum sculpture designed to articulate with the wind. In daytime, it reflects the natural sunlight. Throughout the evening, the mural will be LED lit depicting the sunrise and ending with sunset.

On Oct. 14, UIW’s Fine Arts Complex, including the Kelso Art Center, was officially dedicated with a grand opening ceremony. Marking the occasion, the mural’s LED lighting was displayed for the first time.

The Kelso Art Center is designed to be the quintessence of living, flowing art in the heart of San Antonio, helping to establish UIW as a viable, integral part of the city’s arts culture.

“Sr. Kathleen said they want to be part of the cultural corridor that’s starting at Tobin all the way to the McNay,” said Betty.

“And now, with the new art school, they’ll have the facilities to attract students for art, for photography and to be part of that.”

A Legacy of Success

A

s another graduating class received their diplomas this May, the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) bid a fond farewell to two retiring administrators who have led thousands of students to success.

Dr. Denise Doyle, most recently the university’s chancellor, held many leadership positions during her 27 years at UIW. She served as provost, vice president for Academic and Student Affairs and professor of religious studies. In addition, she played a vital role in the creation of the UIW Adult Degree Completion Program, known as ADCaP. She served as its first director and as the dean of the School of Extended Studies (EAP).

When she began developing the ADCaP program in 1994, Doyle realized the need to help working adults go back to school. These adults may have taken some classes, but then got involved with their career, family or other responsibilities that

prevented them from finishing college. To help them get their diploma, ADCaP offered evening and weekend classes to provide convenient class hours for these students.

“There’s a surprising number of people in San Antonio with some college credits but no degree,” Doyle said. “Having some college is the same as having no college. Employers want to know what your degree is.”

The ADCaP program accepted its first class in January 1995, enrolling about 25 students.

The program took off quickly, and by September, 100 students were attending classes. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the program, with the past 12 years Dr. Denise Doyle under the leadership of Dean Vincent Porter. Over those 20 years, ADCaP has graduated several thousand students and has grown to offer eight locations around San Antonio, Corpus Christi and Killeen, Texas. In August, ADCaP opened a new location in the heart of Corpus Christi’s Southside.

“Denise’s work in spearheading ADCaP during its early days in the 1990s, especially in gaining faculty support, provided the solid foundation for it to grow into one of UIW’s signature academic programs,” said Dr. Louis Agnese, UIW president. “It’s not a stretch to say that ADCaP has improved the lives of thousands of people in San Antonio.”

“Looking back, establishing ADCaP was the most satisfying initiative to me,” Doyle said. “I really got to know a lot of students, and I realized how much it meant to them to get a college degree.”

Students like Kate Crosby, who in 1996 was the first undergraduate to earn a degree from the ADCaP program. Crosby’s younger sister recently joined the ADCaP family, now working toward her degree through the online program. She began her studies at UIW more than 30 years ago, but family life and other obligations prevented her from finishing. Now that she’s back in the workforce, she wanted to complete her degree, just like her older sister did 20 years ago.

“I am thrilled that UIW was the best fit for her,” Crosby said.

When Doyle left her position as dean of Extended Studies to become the vice president for Academic and Student Affairs, she missed being directly involved with students. But even as vice president and later as provost and chancellor, Doyle continued to support UIW Doyle in 1997. students. During Doyle’s tenure the Feik School of Pharmacy, the Rosenberg School of Optometry and the School of Physical Therapy were all established. She was instrumental in helping the optometry school earn accreditation.

“As a leader, Dr. Doyle created an environment primarily focused on the best possible outcomes for our students,” said Itza Casanova, current administrative assistant to the provost who also served in the position when Doyle was provost. “Her contribution to university initiatives created opportunities for faculty and student development and achievement while also establishing her leadership nationwide as a collaborative university administrator.” Casanova has been with Incarnate Word nearly 23 years, first as Incarnate Word High School office staff and subsequently as Doyle’s administrative assistant in 1999.

“Denise has also been superb in her various administrative positions,” said Agnese. “She did a terrific job filling in for me when I was on sabbatical last year, something for which I’ll always be grateful.”

As she retires, Doyle plans to maintain a ministry she enjoyed the entire time she worked at UIW—promoting the Mission of the university.

She now serves as the director of education and formation as the Sisters of Charity Doyle speaks during Sr. Helena Monahan’s, CCVI, of the Incarnate farewell party in 2012.

Word develop the Heritage Center. The center will offer a variety of programs, workshops and retreats, and houses the Sisters’ archives.

In 2015, the Denise J. Doyle Excellence in Teaching and Service Award was established, awarded to CHASS part-time faculty.

Doyle credits several colleagues in her success at UIW, including another retiring administrator, Dr. Bob Connelly, professor emeritus of philosophy, who began working at the university in 1972. Along the way, he served in many capacities, including as assistant to the associate provost, the dean of the College of Math, Science and Engineering, the assistant director and director of assessment, and the dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and

Social Sciences.

“I turned 76 in August and that’s a lot of time to spend in one career,” Connelly said. “It’s been a wonderful career, and I plan to continue with other worthwhile volunteer projects and anything else I can do in the wider community.”

In addition to his titled positions, Connelly took on several important projects, such as assistance in the founding of the Ettling Center for Civic Leadership, establishing the university’s strategic Dr. Bob Connelly goal for sustainability, maintaining the Faculty Handbook, and developing the Headwaters at Incarnate Word. For the past nine years, Connelly served on the board of the Headwaters, a nonprofit sanctuary of protected land adjacent to the university that provides many volunteer and learning opportunities for students and faculty. Because of his involvement in various and numerous initiatives, the university created the The Robert J. Connelly Faculty Leadership Award in 2009 to honor a professor who has served as a model leader of the UIW faculty.

“Bob has been a strong advocate of the faculty, a caring professor, and a leader in our sustainability efforts,” said Agnese.

“Equally as important was his steady leadership during UIW’s SACSCOC re-accreditations. It was critical to the continued well-being of UIW because it allowed us to keep functioning as an accredited university.”

Not only was Connelly continuously dedicated to the faculty, but also to supporting student successes, both in and out of the classroom. Connelly credits his involvement with the university’s sustainability goals to one curious and persistent student. At the time, UIW provided recycling bins, but they were inconveniently

located and rarely used. One senior, Maria Duran ’08 BA, approached Connelly about increasing the emphasis on recycling and stewardship. That led to a recycling committee and then to a group with a broader objective—the Sustainability Committee.

“What was so exciting about this, was that one student who was really persistent about making things better, she started making things happen,” Connelly said. “It’s a message we’re sharing with students and faculty: One person can make a difference.”

Along with others at the university, Connelly wanted to get students, like Duran, more engaged in service learning all around San Antonio, spurring the idea of the Ettling Center for Civic Leadership. He and the late Sr. Dorothy “Dot” Ettling, CCVI, the center’s namesake, approached Agnese and the administration at CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System in 2012 to gain support, and the center was born the next year. Since then, the center has provided internships and community involvement opportunities. Even after retirement, Connelly continues to be involved, coteaching a pilot course called Social Justice Leadership through the Ettling Center—an opportunity he’s thrilled to have.

“In my heart the thing that’s always been the most rewarding is the classroom experience,” Connelly said. “I’ve been teaching for 40 years, and there’s Connelly in 1984. nothing like it. Administration is important because it supports that, but to be in the classroom and engaged with students has got to be one of the best jobs ever. Getting back into a classroom now after 13 years is icing on the cake.”

Lending a Helping Hand

armelita Green ’63 BA is reticent to talk about herself.

Ask about her Alumna life today and she en re Carmelita G will confidently talk about her husband, Dr. David P. Green, the nonprofit he started and her role in supporting the causes they both believe in.

Ask about her past and she’s matter-of-fact about growing up in Laredo, remaining a devout Catholic and attending the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), then Incarnate Word College, from 1959 until she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in math in 1963.

That innate modesty is just part of her charm.

Carmelita, now 73, says she chose UIW because it was a school that shared her values.

I liked the idea of going to a Catholic school,” she said. “And I was lucky they accepted me.”

She describes her experience as wonderful and wholesome.

“So many people from Laredo all came,” she said. “I met so many people who became lifelong friends.”

Some of those friends are the very people she turns to now in her current work fundraising for the Helping Hands Fund. She is vice president of the board for the fund, which is the nonprofit her husband established in 2009. He serves as the board’s president.

The Helping Hands Fund grew out of David’s board service with San Antonio Metropolitan Ministries (SAMM).

His inspiration was a young woman named Annie. Annie was getting help through the ministries, she was a single mother, homeless but motivated to become a lawyer.

But SAMM had no endowment for education. And, at the time, there was no financial support to help someone like Annie. No one covered milk, or diapers, or paid for gas to get to class, or paid for testing fees.

“All those little incidental fees derail people who have nothing,” David said. “These are mostly single people, single mothers with two or three kids who are looking to keep their families together and get back into the mainstream.”

“There’ve got to be more Annies out there,” David said he thought after hearing her story.

The Greens saw a need and knew they could help. They each contributed financially to establishing The Helping Hands Fund, so named because they literally are a helping hand for some people but also a playful poke at David’s profession as an orthopedic and hand surgeon in San Antonio. The nonprofit applied for and attained its 501c3 status in 2013. There is a three-person board and a team of community advisors but no paid staff and all work is done on a volunteer basis.

The fund’s purpose is to provide financial assistance to support the educational endeavors of people who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless. It covers either incidentals that might prohibit someone from meeting their goals or it’s a scholarship specific to education. All of the money raised by the fund is dispersed to people nominated by SAMM and Haven for Hope.

“The point of the whole thing was to get people off welfare and into the ranks of the working,” Carmelita said. “It’s a winwin for everyone.”

Carmelita gives all the credit for the nonprofit to her husband, but in truth, she stands beside him in both the belief that they can make a difference for San Antonio’s homeless and in the practice of raising money and awareness for those endeavors.

“She’s really been a major fundraiser for us,” David said.

Over 200 individuals have been helped by the Helping Hands Fund to-date and more than $230,000 disbursed since 2011.

In addition to the Greens putting in their own money and asking friends to contribute to the fund, the couple also hosted their first large event last fall. “An Acoustic Evening with Kris Kristofferson” was a sold-out success with some 350 people in attendance for the intimate concert that began with cocktails and hors d’ouvres at the Whitley Theological Center.

David said Kristofferson is an old friend from his days at Pomona College in California and he gave the concert for free, which helped raise some $47,000 for the fund.

“It was just the perfect setting and intimate enough for everyone to feel like they were getting a personal performance,” David said.

iffany Skelton, a freshman in the athletic training program at the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW), was presented with the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award for Volunteer Service at the White House in April. Skelton, a Wounded Warrior Athlete who retired from the U.S. Army after 13 years, was recognized for her service in the military, dedication to helping wounded veterans, and her participation in the Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride that took her cycling across three states to raise money for veterans.

“Visiting the White House and being presented with this award was part of a fiveday cycle ride that took us across Virginia, Washington D.C., and Maryland,” Skelton said. “The cycle ride gives us wounded veterans the opportunity to use cycling to overcome physical, mental, or emotional wounds, and gain confidence again.”

Skelton shared that she was not only presented with the service award by President Barack Obama, but she also met Vice President Joe Biden, and Robert McDonald, the Department of Veterans Affairs secretary, and she received coins from each of them.

“The feeling of reaching such a level of recognition for something I had done truly showed me that I am on the right track and accomplishing something that is

deep in my heart,” she said. “Working with wounded veterans is my passion and something I have always wanted to do. Receiving this award let me know that my passion is in the right place.”

While at the White House, Skelton had the opportunity to high-five Obama while she cycled through the White House lawn, and she played basketball on the president’s court with his basketball.

“President Obama was so personable and humble, you would almost forget who you were talking to,” she shared. “When he high-fived me I said ‘thank you, Mr. President,’ and he said ‘no, thank you!’ He really made me feel like we are all his soldiers.”

Skelton’s passion for working with wounded veterans brought her to UIW in January when she felt prepared to begin working toward her college degree. “I had three schools in mind, but UIW seemed to be the most intimate and welcoming when I first came on campus,” Skelton said. “Being a veteran makes attending college a more unique process, but my UIW advisers were very open with me and supportive of my future plans to pursue athletic training to work with adaptive athletes.”

Michelle Beasley, coordinator of UIW Student Disability Services, said when she met Skelton, she saw her as a role model for all UIW’s Cardinals to follow on their own path to graduation. “Tiffany’s relentless drive and determination in obtaining her degree seem to only be matched by her kind spirit,” Beasley said. “This special combination of attributes will not only see her through to graduation day, but through her entire life.”

Beasley said the UIW Center for Veterans Affairs are second to none when it comes to actively supporting veteran students.

“They make the process of utilizing veterans’ military educational benefits very simple so students can spend more time focusing on their studies,” Beasley explained. “They assist from the first step in the door to presenting them with a graduation stole to honor their service to our country as they proudly walk the stage.” UIW is consistently recognized for its work with veteran students.

Skelton’s strong belief in the mission of the Wounded Warrior Project, to help veterans see that no matter what type of wound they have they are still functional people, helped her to clearly see

her goals being accomplished through the assistance and guidance UIW provided as well as the university’s Mission.

“Understanding the UIW Mission, and how it coincides with what I want to do, encourages me so much,” Skelton said. “It makes me feel like I am right where I belong.”

Beasley said she feels the UIW Mission makes such an impact on students because they are drawn towards UIW’s spirit of excellence and vision for the future. “Our Mission incorporates the university’s core values of education, truth, faith, service, and innovation,” Beasley explained. “Students at UIW develop an understanding that, as they embrace these core values, they can have a tremendous and positive impact on the world around them for the rest of their lives.”

Skelton said her future goals include setting up a program for wounded veterans at UIW, and one day working for the Paralympics. “Sports medicine is such a positive outlet for wounded veterans to be encouraged and move forward with what we are dealing with on a daily basis,” she said. “There are more than 1,100 veterans that attend UIW and I want to establish an adaptive sports club to motivate wounded veterans and keep them active.”

Skelton said, more than anything, she wants to share with wounded veterans and all those pursuing their dreams to go for it. “If there is something out there that you know you are destined to do, put your heart into it and go all out,” she said. “Once you start to reach your goals, you will look back at all the ups and downs and realize you were building and growing the entire time.”

Most recently, Skelton was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal by the United States Armed Forces.

Transcending Borders of Higher Education

I

n late August, more than 400 guests, including business leaders, politicians, education officials, members of UIW’s founding congregation, and other dignitaries, attended a gala in Irapuato, Mexico, to hear University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) President Louis Agnese, Jr., map out his plans for Campus Bajio, a new site there.

True to form, Agnese articulated an ambitious vision: to make the new campus the best in the country and create a talent pipeline for a local economy that is booming as foreign investment from automotive companies grows and other sectors, including agriculture, continue to flourish.

The campus is located in the Guanajuato State, heartland of the Bajío region. Guanajuato is an important hub of the automotive industry, including companies such as General Motors, Mazda, Honda, Toyota, Pirelli, Volkswagen and Ford. Other important industrial sectors are food, textile and footwear manufacturing, featuring companies such as ConAgra, Procter & Gamble, Nestlé, Nike and Florsheim.

By the fall of 2016, the new site will offer six degree programs that will be recognized in Mexico and the United States in fields such as international business, engineering and nutrition. Construction on dormitories is slated to begin next year and should be complete by 2017.

As part of a broader effort to increase its international presence, the university also has reciprocal education agreements with 141 sister schools in 44 countries and operates the European Study Center in Heidelberg, Germany.

UIW began operating the Irapuato campus on June 1 in the facilities of the Universidad Liceo Cervantino, which was founded in the late 1970s. The 20-mile radius around Universidad Liceo Cervantino is home to 1.2 million people, and the greater Bajio region has a population of 15.4 million. The region includes the States of Guanajuato, Querétaro, Michoacán, Aguascalientes and San Luis Potosí.

best practices. The university will closely mirror UIW’s campus in Mexico City, Centro Universitario Incarnate Word (CIW), and school officials have noted that the Irapuato site would make the Catholic university the only American institution of higher education to have two colleges in Mexico, according to the Border Education Research Team at the State University of New York at Albany.

“We are committed to the lower (economic) class and the lower middle class,” Agnese told the crowd at the gala event. “We want to educate the masses.”

His statements, communicated in Spanish by a translator, were punctuated by applause.

Agnese said UIW had positioned itself as one of the most powerful Hispanic-serving institutions in the U.S. and promised to make the Irapuato campus just as successful.

“This will be the number one university in all of Mexico,” he said.

Guanajuato Governor Miguel Márquez Márquez called it a historic moment as he posed with Agnese and other school officials outside the building, which will be called Universidad de Incarnate Word Campus Bajío, as media captured it on video and in photos.

“We have to base our [economic] growth on education,” Márquez said in Spanish after the photo, noting the new university will give students an opportunity to become bilingual and start thinking globally.

Márquez, who arrived at the gala by helicopter because he had a prior event but was determined not to miss the occasion, also said he expected the school to provide workers for growing local industries. He noted that Irapuato was experiencing faster economic growth than the state.

Ernesto Ancira, Jr., owner of Ancira Enterprises, Inc., and a UIW board member, outlined the way the school has grown under Agnese’s leadership.

He said UIW was just like any other small college with a smattering of degree offerings until Agnese took over in 1985. Today, UIW is the fourth largest private university in Texas and preparing to add an osteopathic medical school to its list of degree plans, he told the group.

“This is the start of a new chapter between San Antonio and Irapuato,” Ancira told the room proudly.

UIW purchased two tracts of land for the Irapuato expansion — close to 45 acres at the site of the former Cervantino school, located off the Pan American Highway and just a few miles from

The combined capacity for both facilities will be about 3,760 students.

Cervantino has 200 students in middle school; 150 students in high school; and 1,100 students pursuing associate, bachelor and master’s degrees. Today, it offers 10 bachelor and two master degree programs that will continue at the school. More degree plans recognized in the U.S. and Mexico will be added in the future.

Juan Carlos Romero Hicks, a Mexican senator from Guanajuato, called the school opening a momentous occasion.

“It’s going to change things for this city,” he said, adding that it would bring an “international perspective” to the area.

Although San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor and Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce President Richard Perez had planned to attend the event, weather delays to Houston prevented them from completing the trip.

Jill Metcalfe, director of Casa Mexico City, who serves as the international business representation for the City of San Antonio in Central and Southeast Mexico, including Mexico City, said Taylor hopes to develop direct flights to Irapuato to make the university more accessible.

Francisco Armando Velasco Padilla, an admissions director for the new Irapuato campus, said he left a lucrative career in finance to join the team and help the college reach its enrollment goals.

“To hear everything that was happening with this project — I’m someone who likes challenges and the challenges for this project are great,” he said. “It’s a project that’s going to demand a lot but we’re ready.”

Finding a Home

obby Limon has found a home, and that says a lot for the redshirt freshman lineman on the University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) football team.

Just a little more than two years ago Limon wasn’t quite sure where he was going to live and had to endure an emotional roller coaster that included the displacement of his family, medical issues for his mother and father, and a knee injury that kept him from playing last season.

Able to overcome those challenges, Limon is now working toward earning a starting spot for the Cardinals, a task UIW head coach Larry Kennan has no doubt his budding lineman will achieve.

“He’s a tremendously strong guy,” Kennan said. “We’re expecting good things. He’s got charisma and he’s a great student (3.4 GPA).”

Limon said his ultimate dream is to play in the NFL, but he also knows the value of teaching others.

“It’s been an amazing opportunity here at UIW,” Limon said.

“The biggest thing is having my own home – my own bed. I love these guys here; having the time of my life. Maybe one day I’ll become a college coach and use football as a means to teach life skills.”

During the recruiting process, Kennan said his staff was a little concerned because Limon transferred to a new school twice during his junior year. But the coach quickly learned it was because the family was going through some financial troubles.

“He’s gone through some challenges that are either going to make you or break you,” Kennan said.

The rising gridiron star was a junior and had a budding future at Lehman High School in Kyle, Texas. But one night following a football game, the Limons were informed the house they were renting had been sold.

“There was this note duct taped to the door telling us we had four days to move out,” Limon said.

The following day, his father, John Limon, suffered a mild heart attack. At the same time, his mother, Susan, was battling multiple sclerosis.

“There we were, me, my younger sister (Brianna) and mom, trying to move stuff out of the house,” Limon said. “My dad got out of the hospital a day later and he’s trying to help move the heavy stuff. We got a U-Haul trailer and went to live with some friends in Austin for a couple of months so I could finish school.”

Limon, at 6-foot-2 and 315 pounds, was set to transfer to Hays High School - Lehman’s top rival – where his father was hired by the school district. But the University Interscholastic League (UIL) barred Limon from playing at his new school, claiming the family moved for the purpose of playing football, which is in violation of their rules. Lehman’s coach stated to Limon’s father that he requested to the UIL that he not be allowed to play at Hays High School because Hays and Lehman were in the same district.

As he prepared for his senior year, Limon was attending a summer football camp at Sam Houston State in Huntsville, when he met fellow UIW Cardinal Devyn Jensen and several other players from Port Lavaca, who encouraged him to visit Calhoun High School.

In search of a new start, the Limon family traveled to the Texas coastal bend and fell in love with the location and people; and John was able to land a job as a paraprofessional teaching computer skills at an elementary school.

Limon’s ineligibility status with the UIL was lifted and he was free to play football, where he helped Calhoun reach the Class 4A, Division II state semifinals his senior year.

“Any time you see a kid that size come to your program, you get a little excited,” Port Lavaca head coach Richard Whitaker said. “But more than that, what struck me about Bobby was how he stayed positive through everything. Everyone fell in love with him and he brought great leadership to our team. He was just a kid looking to fit in.”

And he’s done that quite nicely at UIW.

UIW’s Marching Cardinals debut new uniforms at first football game On Sept. 5, the Marching Cardinals band donned their new uniforms for the first time at a home football game.

In attendance at the season opener against Texas A&M – Kingsville, were special guests San Antonio Mayor Ivy Taylor and former Congressman Henry Bonilla, longtime supporters of UIW. The Cardinals opened the season with an 18-16 win.

UIW vs. CIW Soccer On Sept. 25, UIW held its first ever international soccer match between the UIW Cardinals and the CIW Cardenales at Benson Stadium with UIW winning 8-0. The Cardenales team is organized by Centro Universitario Incarnate Word located at UIW’s campus in Mexico City. The CIW soccer team was formed five years ago due to the initiative of a group of students. Every year, more students join the team, renewing its spirit and competitive drive. The UIW men’s soccer team opened the 2015 season against Oral Roberts University on Sept. 4 at Benson Stadium. The Cardinals were 7-11-1 last season and finished third in the Western Athletic Conference.

New Horizons

T

he University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) continues to grow.

As enrollment increases steadily, the university strives to build and maintain state-of-the-art facilities in order to enhance the Cardinals’ college experience. The ever-changing UIW campus has seen a number of buildings and facilities pop up on campus in recent years.

UIW’s latest building project is the construction of the new Student Engagement Center (SEC). Demolition of the former Marian Hall began on Sept. 15 to make way for the $30 million facility. The project is slated for completion in Spring 2017 and will be open to the UIW community the following summer.

The project is intended to enhance the student experience and promote student engagement. Marian Hall was constructed in the 1960s when UIW’s enrollment was approximately 1,500 students. According to university administration, the Marian Hall Student Center has become inadequate in serving UIW’s co-curricular needs in the 21st century.

Director of University Events & Student Programs Paul Ayala sees this project as “a great initiative that will benefit the students and faculty tremendously.”

The state-of-the-art SEC will serve as a central hub for students and the extended UIW community. The Registrar’s Office, Business Office, Financial Aid, First-Year-Engagement and Student Success Offices will have a presence in the center. It will also serve as the one-stop home of services including the print shop, mailroom, health and counseling services, and offices for UIW’s food service company Sodexo Services. It will be more than twice the size of Marian Hall’s previous 50,852 square feet. A multilevel bookstore and spirit shop will also be located in the building.

Cardinals will be able to dine at a new and improved cafeteria and a coffee bar with an indoor area and an outdoor patio. The coffee bar will also double as a pub in the evenings.

Three lounges and recreation facilities including pool and ping-pong will be available to students. There will also be a number of meeting spaces and conference rooms. An 800-seat ballroom, comparable in size to the McCombs Center Rosenberg Sky Room will be used to host events.

The east wing of the Dr. Burton E. Grossman International Conference Center (ICC), formerly the reception hall, Circa 1881 Café, and a patio were developed into a new cafeteria in preparation for the demolition of Marian Hall. The location is currently the primary dining facility on campus. The summer also saw the renovation of Hortencia’s in the basement level of the Administration Building so as to accommodate a larger volume of customers.

She intended to help girls in Wilson and Guadalupe Counties but had so many dresses she was able to help girls in need at six area San Antonio schools. Gray works at River City Waste in San Antonio and is the co-owner of Bear Wash in La Vernia and Best Waste in Seguin.

Chris Alvarado ’10 PharmD, who graduated in the Feik School of Pharmacy’s (FSOP) inaugural class of 2010, was recently named the 2015 Pharmacist of the Year by the Texas Pharmacy Association. Ylianna Guerra ’14 BA was crowned Miss Texas USA 2015 in August in a competition that featured 114 contestants throughout the state.

Originally from McAllen, Texas, she represented the Tropics of Texas in the pageant. Guerra then went on to represent Texas in the 2015 Miss USA pageant, where she finished first runner-up. The pageant was held in Baton Rouge, La., in July and broadcast on the Reelz Channel. Recently, she was employed as assistant director for media at EnviroMedia in Houston. UIW welcomes new board members University of the Incarnate Word (UIW) welcomes Suzanne Cheever Goudge to the UIW board of trustees.

In Goudge’s professional career at Broadway Bank, she has held numerous positions in finance, bank investments and trusts; she currently serves on its board of directors as well as other committees. Her service to the community includes involvement with United Way, Alamo Heights School District board of trustees, Sunshine Cottage School for the Deaf, and the San Antonio Zoo, among many others. Her work within each organization not only spans years of service, but includes various leadership positions. Currently, she is vice chair of the new DoSeum, formerly the San Antonio Children’s Museum, which opened on Broadway in June. Goudge and her husband, Jimmy, have four children and four grandchildren. Goudge is the daughter of Charlie and the late Sally Cheever and granddaughter of Charles and Betty Cheever, all longtime supporters of UIW. “UIW has been important to my family,” said Goudge, “and I would like to give back by serving on the board.”

UIW welcomes Paula Gold-Williams to the board of trustees. She serves as group executive vice president – financial and administrative services, chief financial officer and treasurer for City Public Service (CPS) of San Antonio. Gold-Williams was named interim president and chief executive officer for CPS in November 2015. She has held other positions in San Antonio, including regional controller for Time Warner and vice president of finance for Luby’s, Inc. Joining CPS in late 2004, Gold-Williams has served as controller and assistant treasurer; vice president and chief administrative officer, organizational excellence and shared services; and executive vice president, chief financial officer and treasurer. She is the chair of CPS’ Energy Portfolio Strategic Committee and a member of the Oversight Committee. Gold-Williams serves as chair of the Advisory Committee of Executives for St. Mary’s University School of Business; on the board of KLRN, including holding a post on its Executive Committee and serving as board treasurer; and an advisory trustee to Southwest Research Institute and FM Global. In 2014, she was appointed as an honorary joint base San Antonio commander. She has received Best CFO and Finance awards from the San Antonio Business Journal and La Prensa. Gold-Williams mentors numerous people inside and outside CPS, including college students, vice presidents, directors, and various other professionals. She is married and has two adult daughters. “UIW’s future continues to be wonderfully bright and I am honored to serve with other dedicated board members to support the university’s Mission,” said Gold-Williams.

The concept of wellness is based on the premise of obtaining a level of wholeness through several Dimensions of Wellness.

Wellness is not solely based on our physical or emotional status, nor is it based on our condition of health. It is based on our individual ability to find wholeness in all the dimensions while striving towards wellness. There are many models that define the Dimensions of Wellness, but for this topic, the focus will be on Spiritual Wellness.

One way to understand the dimensions is to consider each of them as spokes on a wheel.

Each spoke has to be of equal strength and length for the wheel to roll smoothly. The hub (center of the wheel) represents the individual while the outer tire represents wellness. With that understanding, it is easier to comprehend that we all have to strive for balance in all of our dimensions, while at the same time, working to increase the strength of each dimension. A strong and balanced wheel will roll down the path of life with greater ease.

While most of society focuses on the tangible dimensions such as Physical Wellness, Spiritual Wellness is often one of the dimensions that is overlooked. Spiritual Wellness deserves, if not demands, the same amount of dedication and effort as working out in the gym. Spiritual Wellness gives purpose to our lives. It defines our inner core, our soul, for a meaning greater than ourselves. Without a foundation of spirituality, how can anyone find wholeness/wellness? It is important to dedicate time and energy to the purpose of our individuality, to ask for reconciliation of our past and search for guidance in our future. It is only through such acts of faith, that Spiritual Wellness will become the flame that hardens the steel in our spokes.

One can move toward Spiritual Wellness by seeking purpose and meaning in every act performed; finding time to pray each day; sharing talents and blessings by serving others; and loving, cherishing, and embracing life as a gift.

In August, Dr. Keith Tucker, director of counseling, and Marveen Mahon, director of health services, retired from UIW. A celebration was held on Aug. 14 in Mabee Library’s Special Collections Suite to honor their more than 60 collective years of service. Tucker joined what was then Incarnate Word College in 1975 and, in addition to counseling services, had served as a faculty member as well as chaired the Faculty Association and the search committee instrumental in hiring UIW President Dr. Louis Agnese in 1985. Mahon came to UIW in 1992 as assistant director of health services, but was quickly promoted to director after one week. Tucker and Mahon met as colleagues at the university and eventually married, celebrating their 20th anniversary this year.

Dr. Sally Said, professor of modern languages, spent six weeks on the Navajo Nation at Diné College in Tsaile, Ariz. There she assisted the head of the Navajo Language Program with two projects. She compiled a list of useful Navajo phrases related to health care for use at a local hospital and helped to design new materials to train elementary school Navajo teachers. She also attended sessions of the annual Navajo Language Academy’s Summer Linguistics Workshop July 6-24 at the college.

In June, Dr. Sara Tallarovic, associate professor of biology, Dr. Bonnie McCormick, professor of biology, and Dr. Brian McBurnett, professor of chemistry, presented the paper “Lessons for Success: Active and Cooperative Learning in Science Classrooms” at the 2015 Science Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics (STEAM) and

Education Conference in Honolulu, Hawaii. The paper was accepted for publication in the conference proceedings.

Dr. Suleyman Tek, associate professor of mathematics, gave a presentation, “Surfaces from Deformation of Parameters,” at the XVII-th International Conference on Geometry, Integrability and Quantization, June 5-10, Varna, Bulgaria.
